Nevada or Vegas? Vegas is arguably the biggest most intriguing international city in the world. There are just as many different languages spoken here than New York City & L.A. Its sad that Vegas has a stereotype of hookers n blow & crime. Its a beautiful city. When I moved here I thought I would never last because of those same stereotypes I bought into. The city is a part of me now no matter where I live in the future. Its taught me so much about the world & the peoplethat inhabit it. I see it in a different light than most people. I'm blessed to have been able to survive in this city & know it for what it truly is. Its an awesome city. And John Fogerty lives here too making it even more awesome.

Here's what others are saying

Strip visitors should know that they are obviously tourists and avoid places where they can be taken advantage of. They become a target automatically when they step out of populated areas.

Strip visitors should not explore the city alone. You are a visitor and, therefore, an obvious and easy target for criminals who see you as prey.

Visitors who plan to get drunk should do so in their own hotel. It may save your life or the life of another and will prevent you from being taken advantage of.

I've lived in Vegas for a year now and feel I can share a little bit of what I've learned. No matter where you are in the city you really need to be vigilant, as crime can happen anywhere.

Don't go down the alleys or side streets as a lot of drug deals etc happen there. Also be alert in the parking garages. Once you get past the Encore casino heading north, you should be extra cautious.. between there and the Stratosphere is more dangerous. If you're planning on visiting Fremont Street and downtown, be very cautious and stick to the boulevard. Stay where there are lots of people. Downtown is a very scary place, especially at night.

As far as other areas besides the strip and downtown, I know the area around the air force base is dangerous and the area of Martin Luther King Blvd between Cheyenne and the I-15 has a lot of shady neighborhoods. North Las Vegas definitely has it's share of run-down neighborhoods but they're mostly as you get closer to downtown going south.

I generally follow this as a rule of thumb, no matter what city I happen to be in. For sure in Vegas, stay away from any streets that are numbered or lettered. (i.e. 1st street, 2nd street, A street, B street, etc....) Numbered and lettered streets marks, obviously, the oldest part of town and is usually, therefore, the bad part. I've had to drive through these areas before and might as well have has a neon sign asking to be the victim of a drive-by... I wasn't, but driving through that area was one of the most nervous, scary experiences of my life. JUST STAY ON THE STRIP.
As fun and exciting Las Vegas may be to many. There are many areas you need to always be aware of. Vegas has tried to make this area as safe as they can, but you need to be responsible for your own safety too. Fremont Street is exciting and fun, but I would recommend you stay within the confines of the main strip. When myself and my hubby ventured along Fremont street enjoying the Neon Displays they had along in the middle of the street, it was sort of outside the confines of the main area and we were a little uncomfortable. Although, we did not encure any trouble, but just something to think about. You should always keep that in mind even when in the parking garages on Fremont Street and the Las Vegas Strip.

Stay in lighted areas and do not wonder off in areas you are not familiar with

Be careful about getting ripped of for drinks in caisno bars and clubs.
Most of these places will let you in for free but when you get to the bar they'll fleece you and take the shirt off your back.
One example is the House of Blues bar in Mandalay bay casino. Now I'm not talking about the HOB club/venue itself but the bar right next to it where they have a little stage at the front, some seating/stools and a bar at the back.Beer not so bad ($7/8) but we ordered a Red Bull & Vodka and got hit for 16 dollars! Also the bar girl was a real misery, spilled our beer all over bar wehn she slammed it down and could have turned the milk sour with her face when we refused to budge until she gave us another. Silly girl!

At night avoid the side where the Flamingo is I was approached by a very disrespectful young man and it took a lot for me not to slap the spit out of him. For some reason that side of the street has a lot of hustlers. Even in the daytime some of the salesman over on that side of the street were very rude. They call people names and make fun of them if they don't buy what they are selling.
Every Casino club I have been to has closed early to push people into the casino. Personally I want to stay till the party is dead. Also there is no love at those places; all they want is to drive people in the cattle.
The stratosphere is a tall resort that many are too scared to check out the observatory up top. If that's not enough, they have a gang named gurson park kings(G.P.K) that dwell up here . The tourists that come from anywhere but the west don't usually deal with gangs like talking about so this is for you. They throw ,on average, 2 to 3 people off,per day this 1100 ft. structure to their deaths.Right before they do it ,witnesses hear a lion roar which is their gang calling and then they say,"that was a lion ,not a cough, just take this guy and throw him off". Sounds weird but if you hear this while up there.Look around if their looking at you,,,,if they are...you might as well jump off yourself but be sure to sing Van Halen's"jump" while you go down. I did!!!!It goes "aw cant ya see me standin here i got my back against the rackin machine ,i eat the worst things you've seen , aw cant ya see what i meannnnn.Aw, might as well jump,JUMP
Pittman. If you like living ,don't sightsee here

North Las Vegas- North of downtown- is probably the worst place in Vegas. Or al least it was when I lived there. There's NOTHING to see there so just don't go! That's where most of the gang activity occurs in the city and the most violence.
Keep clear of Simba's den in the Casino area of MGM
Unless you have a car...I wouldn't venture on the side streets of the Strip in the middle of the night. There are some seedy gang members, prostitutes and beggars all over the place...

Be careful not to go into the 'dark' areas around and behind the hotels.

PICKPOCKETS in crowded casinos. Don't wander around Downtown Vegas after dark, some of it is quite seedy & there are a few 'iffy' characters hanging about.

It depends. If your view of Las Vegas is the Strip and major hotels and casinos then it could be considered correct.

However, if you actually get your ass out of a casino you might find something culturally or spiritually rewarding. Go to First Friday and you might see a growing artistic community. Hang out at The Beat. Go to Las Vegas Academy, see some of the local theater groups. If you seek natural wonders go see Red Rock, Mount Charleston or Valley of Fire.
Trouble is 99% of people who visit here have no inclination to do anything but seek out a buffet, a cheap show etc.

But that aside, I see the same gaudiness and culturally bereft whenever I visit Hollywood, Venice Beach or LA theme parks. Would you say that is all LA offers? Yet that is the LA most tourists experience.

Since everyone has decided to just troll this thread (myself included) here is a list of reasons why I believe Las Vegas sucks
-The restaurant scene is populated mostly by celebrity-chef bullshit and even the most progressive of dining options in Vegas are years behind SF or NYC
- The nightlife is truly awful, the music is usually top 40 bullshit mixed with a little bit of mainstream Hed Kandi house, and few clubs are places to listen to good music but rather buy bottle service and hit on corny white chicks
- The shopping there is garbage, it's the most redundant bland gucci bullshit possible.
- Outside of the strip; a lot of the neighborhoods are really gross and have that horrible never ending suburban hell look to them. I haven't really been to another neighborhood outside of Downtown vegas or the strip that has any character or charm besides "shanty truck-driver meth town"
-Some of the cities biggest yearly events are the Adult video Awards and now Electric Daisy Carnival...yeah...

I know there are a few other venues in Vegas that aren't entirely horrible but they don't bring through enough talent to put themselves on the level of any other cities, probably even lacking behind Phoenix & Salt Lake City, def. behind Denver.

No offense, but some people even consider LA culturally bereft on the global stage. So I believe you'll have even harder time arguing points that make Vegas seem like a cultural hub.

But hey, they filmed one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of all time in your city;

Vegas has some of the most diverse and best food options in the world, and most of them are off the strip.

Can't speak on the nightlife since I am 20 years old, but I can imagine it is full of douchebags LIKE THE ENTIRE STRIP (all tourists).

Outside of the strip, Vegas is one of the best urban planned communities in the entire world. The strip and downtown are the oldest scummiest places in Las Vegas, following North Las Vegas (ie. our ghetto, add horses/cowboy people). The entire west side of Las Vegas is gorgeous and nearly brand new. Great food, great infrastructure, beautiful open sky and weather 24/7.

I agree that Vegas is culturally lacking compared to other cities like SF and NYC but the reason for that is so painfully obvious. In the 1950s and 60s (and onwards), when SF and NYC were destinations for young intellectuals to create a life/cultural movement, Vegas was a "scuzzy tourist trap", sure. It was a city built on greed/sex/crime etc. We're a long way from then. If you haven't "really been to another neighborhood outside of Downtown vegas or the strip that has any character or charm" then I'm sorry, you "haven't really been" to Vegas at all. You've visited 1 fucking road.

It's true Vegas lacks quality traditional culture, but it's not completely devoid. It does have quite a history and is obviously up there with the most recognized cities in the world. And if you really want culture it's just a 4 hour drive to LA. Lovely place to visit but I would loathe to regularly deal with such a ridiculous notion as "last call".

How could you know? You hate most of The Strip, which is understandable. But Las Vegas isn't just the Strip, in fact the Strip isn't Las Vegas it is Paradise-unincorporated town within Las Vegas.

Las Vegas is many things, it lacks a culture because the city grew so fast in the 1980's it didn't develop like a regular city. But when you see the music and art scene that is developing it is absurd to say there is no culture.

Vegas is what it is. It ain't pretty, but I love it because you can get into anything you want to at any time of the day. If you have some self control, don't mind having very few true friends or a bunch of superficial friends and have the drive to succeed, it is really easy to make a living here.

The culture here never develops because it is a transient city. People come and go all the time. Work (either the lack of it or the service industry in general), addiction or general frustration with the Vegas scene tends to drive people away after about 5 years. The people that are from here (me) or the ones that make a career here find it hard to develop true friendships. The social impact of Vegas being a transient city mixed with tourists coming and going all the time fuel the shallow culture that we have. Since the service industry is pretty much the only industry we have here, I don't see changing any time soon.

If you are 21+ come visit though! You can have anything you want!
