Checking in.

To answer you from the other thread. Not sure how early one would need to get there to get a spot in the pit (probably depends on opener situation), but I imagine a few of us will get there early and have a good chance of holding down some spots. You'll be fine.

Ellie is going too, so I am going to see if some people would like to get dinner in Berkeley then head over very early.

GeezrRckr
07-11-2011, 01:02 PM
ThoughtForms (http://what.cd/artist.php?id=158780) is the opener. Just DLd their LP. Anyone know about them (Jared?).

Yeah, don't sweat getting there later. We'll have spots staked out. I'm going to shoot for my usual...right below the board on those stone seats.

They're on Geoff's label. Wouldn't be surprised if they're a last minute add for ATP, as well.

I like that Ellie is now my +1. Appropriate as I already stated my intention to take her to dinner and get her stinking drunk.... ;)

hey grandma, not sure how many creeps are on here that would do this, but I think it is possible to print that extremely hi-res photo you posted of your ticket and use that barcode for entry to un-suspecting ticket checkers. I'd say edit that photo or just remove it altogether. And just to be sure, get to the venue early in case someone is already planning on burning you. First code to get scanned wins. Just sayin...

It's raining Portishead tix!

Is it better to stay in S.F. or Berkeley? I have my flight and car booked but still looking for lodging.

I'm considering this hotel. Super 8 - El Cerrito/Berkeley Solid reviews, free parking and internet and about 5 miles from the venue. I'm guessing it's going to be easier to stay in Berkeley. Maybe I just answered my own question.

You might be able to find something else on the San Pablo stretch in el cerrito/albany/north berkeley closer to Solano/University that might be a bit more convenient (as far as good food/proximity to the venue is concerned).

I'd say stay in Berkeley though. That way you can chill out after the shows and not worry about BART (or parking).

faxman75
10-11-2011, 11:50 AM
Thanks Jared, i'll broaden my search a bit and see what I come up with. I was considering the Berkeley Hostel ($30/night) but heard it's a nightmare to park in that area as it's surrounded by restricted parking. It was appealing because it looked like walking distance to the venue.

wmgaretjax
10-11-2011, 11:53 AM
That location would be beyond perfect. Walking distance to venue, food, bart... You could get away without a car if you stayed there...

chiapet
10-11-2011, 12:11 PM
Yea, Mark, you really don't need a car. Public transit is pretty good (and the Portishead show will not be on THAT late). I don't think you'll find anything else even close to that price.

The only reason I can think of for staying in SF would be to go out after / hang out with people after Portishead, but I think a lot of us are going to be jetting over to Public Works (for Art Department & Damian Lazarus -- probably not your thing).

faxman75
10-11-2011, 12:13 PM
Hmm so cancel the car, stay at the hostel and use BART to get to and from Berkeley? Let me get this priceline name your own price rental car canceled then. Luckily I have a trick for that too. This will be much affordable. I'm having lunch with some friends in Berkeley the next day so this should all work out. Thanks for the tips.

chiapet
10-11-2011, 12:21 PM
Mark, BART runs until around 12:30AM, so you'd have no problem getting to/from the airport. There are also lots of bus routes (and all-night buses - though those are fairly limited in their routes). Berkeley IS a college town, so there are tons of options for getting around without a car.

I did some googling and found a blog from a former employee some months ago and this is the 2nd time i've done it successfully. Basically you tell them that when you booked you booked it as a one way rental and not round trip. They might repeat their script like the guy I just talked to did and say "i'm sorry sir, but with name your own price, you can't cancel". I then repeated that I did not make the round trip reservation, I booked a one way reservation from SFO to LAX but when I got the e-mail it stated I made a RT reservation so that's why i'm calling to straighten out the matter. Don't just call and ask for a refund. The customer care rep will then research your options and tell you he can cancel it for you with a full refund and you can go back to priceline.com to try and book your one way reservation.

Here is the link with other handy tips.

So... it seems like there are dozens of us going. Are you guys planning on going early to try for good floor/pit spots? Or hanging in the seated section?

greghead
10-12-2011, 07:52 PM
Honestly, I may just go for the lawn so I can stretch out and chill and have my own space. Probably going for seated section, though. Again, I want to be able to sit and chill when the groove gets heavy.

guedita
10-12-2011, 07:57 PM
Will there be room to stretch out on the lawn? I just realized that I'll probably need to go to this in a wheelchair otherwise.

chiapet
10-12-2011, 08:12 PM
If you get there early, with a blanket and hold down your space, yes, there's room on the lawn. It tends to fill in closer closer to the front though.

I'm not really into being in the pit section for this, but was going to try to get there early enough to get a good seat. We'll see. ;)

10-12-2011, 08:41 PM

fikus222
10-12-2011, 08:45 PM
Salah, your BF is probably talking about the thrones that ring the pit area.

Heidi, I wasn't planning on going into the first pit area either, rather the second ring with the wide steps in front of the thrones.

sbessiso
10-12-2011, 08:54 PM
Yeah the thrones! Apparently its a good spot?

Heidi, I wasn't planning on going into the first pit area either, rather the second ring with the wide steps in front of the thrones.

That sounds good to me, if there's still space when I get there. Otherwise, I don't mind being in the seated section behind the thrones. (Not immediately behind the thrones - we were right behind them for Massive Attack, and the constant traffic through the area annoyed the hell out of me).

fikus222
10-12-2011, 09:04 PM
Cara, when Erika was in her leg brace recovering from a torn ACL, we were allowed to sit in the wheelchair area ringing the pit.

Due to an unfortunate work seminar, I will be arriving late(ish) as well :(

Actually, my favorite area at the Greek is the the two steps next to the path between the thrones and seated area. These spots are great, so long as you are standing on the top step. This allows you to be head and shoulders above the crowd and still below the sight lines of those behind you.

Those are exactly the seats that I didn't like at all. IF you aren't standing on the top step, you (well, *I*) can't see shit, and there were constantly people walking by or stopping and trying to crowd in. I still couldn't see from the lower step. Sucks being short. :P

Is this place anything like the hollywood bowl as in, are you allowed to bring booze in? How much are hard liquor drinks if they even sell them?

chiapet
10-13-2011, 07:04 AM
You're not "allowed" to bring anything in but security checks are superficial (if they happen at all). I've had no problem bringing flasks. They do not sell hard liquor IIRC - wine, soju & beer.

Coming in from Fresno; probably get into the area around 7:00. Should I just park in Dublin and BART in? Only saw one other show there before, got in early and parking wasn't too bad- but it wasn't easy either.

I've only driven there when arriving late once, it was not fun. I ended up giving up and parking quite far away down Shattuck and paying for parking.

Caleb, I don't have your number anymore so if you see Mark and me, say hi :)

wmgaretjax

parking on weekends is not fun in that area. but your best bet is to patrol up and down durant et al... with the dorms and the frat houses there tends to be lots of coming and going.

the ideal situation is to arrive a little before 6 when the parking meters are still in action (especially the coin operated ones, there are always vacancies)... then grab a bite to eat and head to the venue.

Are people looking for something to do afterwards in the City? I'm contemplating going to the Four Tet show at Harriet 103. Also, there's some good DJs spinning at Shine from 10-4. A friend of a friend is the host, DJ Toma, and DJ Smoove will also be there (who is great). It's only $5 all night. More info about that here (https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=260443687324254).

chiapet
10-17-2011, 10:19 PM
Yup, it's easy to get there from BART - you'll get off at the downtown Berkeley station and basically just cut through the campus. As long as you walk more or less straight through campus, you will end up on Gayley. If you're worried about getting turned around when going through campus, you could always take a slightly longer route and take either Hearst or Bancroft (off of Center) up to Gayley. If you take Bancroft, you walk past Top Dog on the way. :D

When you get closer to the theater, it's pretty easy to follow the crowd - same with finding your way back to BART.

Edit: Oh, I see that you mean back to BART. We'll be going back to BART in order to get back to SF, yep.

fikus222
10-17-2011, 11:45 PM
I know it's probably a long shot, but I'm also looking for an Extra Ticket.

Be somewhat careful transiting through Campus. During show days, Cops patrol the route looking for peeps with open containers and what not.

I'm still debating about the PW show....

What an amazing show.
One thing that occurred to me last night about Portishead: I like all their 90s stuff, but it almost feels like a different band. It was nice and all but I didn't enjoy those songs as much as the new song and the stuff off Third, which is really the record that got me fully onboard with Portishead.
The older songs are very nice songs. They just suffer in direct comparison to the Third stuff I think.

That's neither here nor there though. It was a terrific show.

Regarding the new stuff Nylon Smile was a favorite from the first listen of Third and it remains my favorite song on that album. I disagree about the new stuff being better overall though. Over, wondering stars, mysterons, cowboys, threads and roads are all better than a good portion of Third IMO. That show seemed to fly by. They just sounded brilliant last night and I think I would follow an entire tour if I could afford the time and money.

Last night was brilliant. I kept getting goose bumps and really did feel like they were performing for ME. I totally disagree, HB, about the older tracks - those were the highlight for me. They've held up so well IMO, and kind of made me remember what I loved about the genre before it was ruined by generic garbage.

Agreed. I left the show at the Greek thinking ' Portishead likes Third a lot more than I do'. Was disappointed they didn't play more from Portishead, just a lot of stuff from the first and third records. The largely acapella Wandering Star was the highlight.
