View Full Version : Couldn't the presale have waited?

PassiveTheory

The timing just seems incredibly inconvenient for those of us who not only just went to Coachella but who saved up for that particular Coachella with the assumption that, should everything not be a shitshow like 2010, one might be able to save up to try and go again in 2012 and start paying in January.

That, and only offering layaway now (when scalpers are most apt to take advantage of the sale) is particularly damaging in that case.

yeah if they were asking for the full price I would say this is way to early for a presale BUT you just need a downpayment and then a payment every mth for 8 mths. If anything it forces you to save for coachella instead of waiting until the last second to get the funds.

The question is which weekend (or do you go to both)?

For those that work knowing 11 mths in advance helps (ie get vaca time squared away).

Really I would guess the only people getting screwed would be college students. They have no way of knowing which weekend will be better for them. Granted college students do make up a decent percentage of the crowd. But still they can just find a way to turn thier assigments in early or take the test earlier or go to lab on a different day or go to clinical on a different day or whatever to make it work.

Current job expires after labor day, at $8.25/hr and no more than 35 hours a week, so I'm going to be busy trying to land something beyond August all summer and not able to really throw anything into this.

I mean, if it boils down to whether or not I have 350$ lying around come January, then that's just how it's going to be.

it would have been nice if they gave us a couple weeks instead of a few days from the announcement. Kind of abrupt and I along with others depending on financial situations will be broke but whatever, better to have the peace of mind.

This year my last day of classes was May 2. I don't know if going to Coachella 1 will fair better in terms of me getting stuff out of the way and being prepared for finals. I feel like Coachella 2 will be easier for me but I want to go to 1 :(

What if I don't like the lineup in January and want to return my ticket.

Glastonbury charges only $50 for this.

If you've have to forfeit the ticket at 50% GV could run afoul of better business laws. Or fans could skip several payments and still be legally entitled to the ticket if they pay up within a certain time period and not be dinged.

AFAIK, there are no "better business laws" that would prevent a purchaser from losing his/her money should he/she decide to back out of a contract. There is a Better Business Bureau, however that's a privately run enterprise and "running afoul" only means they won't be BBB accredited, which means absolutely dick for a company like GV/AEG.

Also, if fans miss payments, they could be dinged depending on the agreement/contract you sign for layaway. You could theoretically miss one payment and forfeit your ticket. The amount they are entitled to keep however may be subject to state laws.

In March we double checked this when GV charged the card on March 1st rather than March 4th they wrote in the layaway fine print for those that bought first day. After pointed out "fraud" on their end they waived our UPS shipping - we also found that for installment on credit cards GV has the legally try for a month or two to allow financing with the buyer. The US has very strict credit card laws protecting consumers.

My point is that I don't like having to be on the hook for most of the weekend pass without seeing a lineup. And there's no assurance either weekend will sell out meaning resale value would be compromised.

Why is GV not offering an escape clause?

This country is based on a capitalist free enterprise system. Get over it people. Scalping is probably as old a profession as prostitution. I bet fools were paying out the ass to see gladiators fight in the Colosseum back in the day. I've bought from scalpers before & have gotten tickets cheaper and have gotten gouged. If you wanna go toa show bad enough you will pay the maximum that you feel you need to pay if you need to be at the show. I have been many times thankful for scalpers having a spare to come off.

I know the good old USA is a free enterprise system, but Michael Moore had some amazing critiques in his film Capitalism: a Love Story, featuring my favorite US Senator Bernard Sanders of Vermont, a self proclaimed "democratic socialist."

My big question regards resale of the tickets with the camping pass.

My current plan is to buy both weekends, since my wife and I are both starting new jobs and have literally no idea what our work schedule will be those weekends, but we'll want to camp whichever weekend we use.

It may be an "overprepared" plan, but after 2011, you can't be too prepared. If the camping is just tied to the ticket, no big deal, someone around here will probably want one after planning poorly. If it can't be used at all without me being there (ID and all), that's a tough call... one camping spot gone unused is one too many at Coachella.

I'm glad the presale is super-early, I just wish we knew the precise details so we knew how much money we'd throw away by covering all our bases.

Do you really think that the lineup will suck so hard that you won't want to go?
Realistically, after paying a petty $30 a month for 8 months, do you think the lineup will be so garbage that you would rather get your slowly paid off money back?
I Just don't see the festival sucking that hard and i'm almost insulted that you would say something like that about Coachella. Just buy a ticket. If you don't like the lineup, go anyway, and have a blast.

Not going to buy presale, my friends and I are choosing to wait and hope to still get tickets for either weekend closer to the date. I need to plan for my travel appropriately and make the right decision about which weekend to attend. With my work and other commitments it's too soon for me to get tickets I may not be able to use. I hate the thought of missing due to sellout but it's the chance I have to take.

This is the first time I did the layaway-it will probably be less painless than putting all the money out in January. the bummer is all of the hotels know the dates way in advance for 2012 and I have always been able to get a really good rate by reserving the most obvious weekends ahead of the annoncements. So now I will keep checking for a lower rate but I doubt they will come down this year!

Good luck. May I suggest picking a weekend now. If you need another weekend and both sell out, you can sell yours, but some on ebay for the other show and take a small loss. Small price to pay for certainty that you will have a ticket.
