you mean waiting to see a band you not into and hanging out with a bunch of dead celebrities that hit the peak of their coolness while they were still alive and you we still swimming in your dads balls (or not even a stain in your grandfathers drawers) isn't hip?

It's really shocking how they haven't already sold out.Maybe most people only can get one day off since it's a weekday or their still at work right now.

Edit: i mean maybe everyone are just waiting to get one day passes which go on sale tomorrow.

The Flaming Lips aren't as big as they were 6-7 years ago. If they played Coachella, they wouldn't sub-headline anymore.
But for $80 and two concerts that are kinda unique, there are a lot worse ways to spend $80.

Flaming Lips to Play Bell Tower with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
Posted in World Wide Lips by PsychExFutureHeart on April 19, 2011
Last week, when The Flaming Lips “announced” (that is, tweeted a poster for) a set of shows at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on June 14-15, it was mysteriously refered to it as a “two nights, one morning” event. The two nights were self-explanatory: on one they’ll cover Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, and on the other they’ll play their own classic, The Soft Bulletin. But what was “the morning”?

Though we still don’t know exactly what will go down in the A.M. set, Wayne Coyne tweeted last night it will take place “in the belltower” (pictured left, by Curtis!)…

What’s this about a bell tower??

“The Stars of Hollywood Forever” website explains a ”Spanish-influenced structure from the early thirties, a nearby three-story tower, today houses the Eliza Otis chimes… The chimes, commissioned in her memory, are a twenty-thousand-pound set of twelve cast-bronze bells, each inscribed with one of her verses. They hung in the bell tower of the cemetery’s chapel from 1905 to 1925, when the chapel’s beams bowed.”

Apparently The Flaming Lips will play the Eliza Otis chimes…
… with the help of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros!

Does anyone have any idea about ticketing in regards to the morning belltower set? HF stated that there would be no camping, but otherwise I've seen nothing official or anything at all aside from this article. Did I miss something obvious?

Tweeted FL and HF but got no response.

I'm assuming you'll either need to have tickets to both nights, or there will be a separate ticket for the a.m. portion. Would be awesome if they let in anyone with a ticket from either show but I doubt that's the case...

Maybe they're not even requiring tickets since it's during normal cemetery visiting hours on a weekday, and only one song? Not possible or worth the trip for enough people to even bother? Seems like interest in this event is a bit too high for that to be the case.

Maladjusted to the vagaries of life, Morrissey has given deep thought to the cemetery gates that house his ultimate resting spot. Via Metro:

The 48-year-old star wants a spot at the celebrity cemetery Hollywood Forever, near his home in Los Angeles, the Daily Express reports.

And not just that, but the former Smiths frontman also wants to be laid to rest near his music idol Johnny Ramone.

“I like that cemetery. I stumbled across Johnny Ramone’s stone and thought it was very nicely placed,” he is quoted as saying.

“I sat there for a long time and I felt quite good about it. It was nice his bones were under the soil I was sitting on. So yeah, that’s my spot."

I suppose it depends on when you get there to park, but I parked on Lodi & Lexington last time quite easily and google maps says its .3 miles.

You could also park at Paramount which is on the other side of the cemetery from the entrance, I believe. That's what they recommend at least.

Details on the Morning Set - Is everyone gonna go home and come back? You think you need a ticket to enter in the morning? either way I'm there! It's like Bon Iver all over again. Plus I only live 5 min from there so it's a no brainer...

As an added bonus, teased Coyne, when the Lips were in Brazil recently, they ran into Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, mentioned the graveyard shows and invited them along. Unfortunately, they had a previous gig on Wednesday -- but fortunately, it's on the Paramount lot. Coyne pitched them an idea: "You guys just come over and do this impromptu jam, and then we sort of do this troupe -- we just walk over to the bell tower and do this thing as the sun is coming up, at about 6:20 Wednesday morning. We don't know if it's going to be raining or what -- in the Steven Spielberg version of it, it's going to be a perfect sunrise -- we don't know. But if you don't try, nothing will happen."

Did everyone chill out on their blankets or everyone stand up the whole time once the Flaming Lips went on? Want to plan it out for when I go tomorrow.

So mellow. There's really not much to plan. I just rolled in, met some friends. Had a beer or two. Rolled up close to the front. Made my way to the back at the end and played with big balloons and a family. I'd say most people stood that I could see. If you go over to stage right, there is a circular brush at the back where I saw people still sitting up against on blankets or foldout chairs. Plenty of room to move about overall.

Tonight's show completely floored me. Best start to a night ever, outside in line Wayne walked up right in front of where I was and was strumming his guitar. I noticed he had silver paint on his nails, and I asked him if he intentionally matched his nails with his outfit and he looked up, looked me right in the eyes and said "I didn't plan it, but it works, doesn't it?" Fucking awesome.

First off, well done on the pics supre; the first one with Wayne and the big hands is now my desktop wallpaper.

As for the show, wow, what an experience. I was able to work my way directly behind the sound/lighting booth, which gave me a completely unobstructed view and a perfect spot between both sets of speakers. Personal highlights included: "A Spoonful Weight a Ton" (as does the bass), "Buggin'," and "The Observer," although I really feel the song that stole the show was "Feeling Yourself Disintegrate" - that song almost made me cry.

Have fun tonight everyone, and make sure to check out the half disco ball art instillation once the lights go out!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that you knew last night's show was destined for greatness when the full moon was directly over the stage once they started playing.

I was sitting in the grass by the entrance when I saw a long haired asian guy from afar so I sarcastically said to my friend "omgggg it's the Ariel Pink dude..." because I automatically assume that any long haired asian guy is the guy from Haunted Graffiti and he came closer I saw Ariel Pink walking with him so it really was him that time. Awesome how they played on the whole DSOTM/Wizard of Oz theme. The beating heart/Dorothy spitting rainbows during the intro was one of the best parts of the night for me. Fuck, it was a highlight of my whole year, actually.
(Granted, I'm not that familiar with Flaming Lips so some of the past 2 days was lost on me - though I was still completely blown away and was present for the entirety of each of the 3 separate events)

This is what I got for the setlist:

1. Speak to Me
2. Over The Rainbow (from "The Wizard of Oz")
3. Breathe
4. We're Off To See The Wizard (from "The Wizard of Oz")
5. On The Run
6. Time
7. The Great Gig In The Sky (with Peaches)
8. Money
9. March of the Winkies (from "The Wizard of Oz")
10. Us and Them
11. If I Only Had A Brain (from "The Wizard of Oz")
12. Any Colour You Like
13. Brain Damage
14. Eclipse

Encore

1. She Don't Use Jelly
2. The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song
3. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1
4. Is David Bowie Dying?
5. Do You Realize??

I actually asked about this last night to Wayne, they are serious about making Hollywood forever shows annually.Yoshimi has a lot of slow/medium tempo songs(I can't exactly remember what he said). This is why they only do so many songs from Yoshimi. In the end, Wayne said "He sees it possible in the future to see Yoshimi played in it's entirely".I wouldn't suspect to see them do to a whole album next year though at Hollywood forever.I ask him about doing more albums in their entirely at the future annual Hollywod forever shows and he explain that it was a lot of work.

I actually got to talk to him for a while and also asked about ATP.I told him about that story of Kevin Shields hiding behind a bush to avoid fans and smoke so he could cigarette alone and he said "Yeah...Kevin is weird like that".I was kinda happy i was one of the last people to talk to him because i was a lot more sober. Also there's going to be a new released coming out called "The Lighting Lips" or "Lighting Lips" Flaming Lips+Lighting bolt.

2:29 is the beginning of the coup de grace

The Soft Bulletin night was the better night for me because of the ridiculous amount joy I get from hearing "Race for the Prize" but I noticed they skipped a song. They skipped "Slow Motion" :(

Other than that it was the best concert I've ever been to. I reaaalllly hope it does become an annual thing.

This is because there are different releases of The Soft Bulletin. They play the US release, which has The Spiderbite Song on it instead of Slow Motion.

Ohhh thanks for clearing that up. Still would've been nice to hear Slow Motion though.

Although, I watched the Flaming Lips documentary Fearless Freaks on Netflix the other day, and I have to admit that my infatuation has slightly waned due to the whole part about Steven Drozd's heroin addiction and the way the band handled it.

How did they handle it?

You guys havn't seen the Fearless Freaks?! WHAT IT NOW. The scene with Steven shooting up giving an interview to the camera is one of the most bleak real life footage I've ever seen. Great documentary about the band's entire careers and upbringing.

Does Wayne always blah blah blah so much between songs?

After watching My Morning Jacket's Storytellers a few days ago something occurred to me that seems odd...Jim James went on about how he believes there's other lives, other universes we'll live in, etc. But Wayne explicitly said he thinks this is all there is...which is surprising coming from someone who seems so high so often. You'd think he'd have a more out there take on the whole thing.

/two cents

I thought Wayne made it very clear that he doesn't take drugs anymore. . .

I agree. It does seem like somebody who would have some pretty crazy ideas about life, and it seems like a pretty stark thing for him to think. I just watched Fearless Freaks for the first time the other day, and he sort of touches upon when he's talking about the robbery at Long John Silvers. . .

Goddamn, that was a show. I was feeling like utter shit beforehand and almost (but not really) debated not going, but man was it ever worth it. The Aragon ended up being the perfect venue for them, big and weird enough to hold all their madness without them getting swallowed up. I got there kind of late, so unfortunately I missed Marnie Stern and ended up towards the back of the room, but I could see and hear everything just fine. I know there's been a lot of concerns about the band/Wayne not sounding good live, but they fucking nailed The Soft Bulletin. It was just so damned cool hearing tracks like "The Spark That Bled" and "The Gash" live, and of course the whole thing was enriched by being played in sequence. Wayne got very emotional at certain parts and it was pretty touching. I definitely wanted to cry during "Waiting For A Superman," which was kind of stripped down but devastating. The visuals and Wayne's chattiness never seemed distracting, but helped make the experience leave a stronger impact. I always recognized that there were some majorly melancholy aspects to the album, but the second half hit a lot harder live. Made me kind of glad I didn't trip in the end as I'd probably get really contemplative about morbid stuff. It already kind of did without chemical assistance. They encored with "Brain Damage" from Dark Side and "Do You Realize", of course, but both were way fun live. I'd still love to hear some earlier stuff but that's asking a lot these days. I'm just grateful I got to see this show as it surpassed all my expectations. Now if they could get to work on a Transmissions From The Satellite Heart set . . .
