View Full Version : Who was the best band before 3 p.m.?

psycobetabuckdown
04-24-2011, 05:04 AM
I was gonna make this a poll but this actually includes lots of bands so that wouldn't be fair since I didn't see even close to all of them.

My favorite was Joy Formidable, who became one of my top 5 of the whole festival.

Hurts.

Pissed off at Goldenvoice for missing Hurts. I had to stand in the long ass line to get my wristband checked on Friday after getting a red light...

When I got to the front of the line, they said I was good after scanning it...waste of an hour...

They should have tested that crap before mailing them out...

Truth Be Told...almost all of them...to be honest I often felt the before 3 lineup's were better than the 3-6 lineup...for sure Sunday...Friday probably as well.

For my money, here's how I'd rank the Pre 3 sets I caught.

1. Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears.
2. The Love Language
3. DeLorean
4. Twin Shadow
5. Phosphorescent
6. Freelance Whales
7. Menomena
8. New Pants
9. Jack's Mannequin
10. Rural Alberta Advantage
11. Thao With The Get Down, Stay Down
12. Mariachi El Bronx
13. Good Old War
14. Tramped By Turtles
15. EE
16. The Joy Formidable (Not getting the love fest for this guys, they are very much still a work in progress...They rock hard, but they don't know what they are artistically...a lot of promise, charisma, and instrumental talent, but obviously I thought a good chunk of the early acts had a much clearer sense of identity).
17. !!! - Disappointing...not nearly as impressive as I thought I would see my first time catching these guys.
18. Hurts - Another don't get the love, though I only caught first two songs...set felt very low key and 80s derivative.
19. The Henry Clay People
20. Elize Doolittle
21. Cults
22. Fun
23. Ryan Leslie
25. Francis And The Lights
26. Men
27. Miguel

MusicIsMyBoyfriend
04-25-2011, 12:20 PM
Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears.
Menomena
Rural Alberta Advantage
Good Old War
Hurts
The Henry Clay People
Eliza Doolittle

And can I say, we really enjoyed GoldRush in the Do Lab first thing on Friday. He was pumped (and looked hysterically like Seth Meyers) and the crowd was digging it... it was a fun way to start the fest.

This, listen I'm a Delorean fan but I thought they were terrible at Coachella. We left after three songs because we couldn't take it anymore. Vocals were bad, sound issues were terrible, just a mess, my biggest disappointment of the entire festival next to Odd Future.

Thanks whoever posted that Hurts video. I think I would've loved seeing them early in the day.

Someone said they were "nonplussed" by Twin Shadow, that is a great word to describe the Twin Shadow set. I was so uninterested I wasn't sure if it was actually bad.

Delorean weren't bad, but the vocals were terrible. I saw them in SF in the fall and the vocals still weren't perfect but the show was much better. Maybe it's just a curse of having seen them before. I bet if I hadn't seen The National four or five times already their Coachella set would've been one of my favorites this year.

I'm pretty sure people have named 98% of the bands before 3 p.m., which is awesome. Maybe a more appropriate thread would've been who was the worst band before 3?
