This is tough for me.

In no order -

- The Strokes
- Sasha
- The Black Keys
- Nas & Damian
- Kanye

Honorable mention - Arcade Fire, Lauryn Hill, The Twelves (they tore the Sahara Tent up), Shpongle (His stage setup was fucking awesome), Joy Formidable, OFF!, One Day As A Lion (could have been an easy top 5 if I could hear half the shit Zach said), The Chemical Brothers, Animal Collective ( I know some here didn't like it, but for me, at that moment, it was perfect).

I have so many honorable mentions because I had a really hard time picking a true top five and considered including all of these in there. So many good performances to choose from.

Who is in your top 5?

-trentemoller
-arcade fire
-titus andronicus
-lightning bolt
-glasser/warpaint (because i'm indecisive and they wre both great)

a few honorable mentions:
-dfa1979 for being dfa1979
-rural alberta advantage/the love language/menomena for being great outdoor kickoff sets.
-one day as a lion/gogol bordello/the twelves/black joe and the honeybears for being fun as hell.
-jimmy eat world for nostalgia.
-city and colour for playing a new song that actually made me tear up a little (the lyrics, about a sister in need of help, were astonishingly touching for me)

1. Cut Copy = 99.9% of huge Mojave crowd up and dancing the entire high-energy set
2. Arcade Fire = magic
3. Sleigh Bells = rocked it hard (and have grown into a great stage presence)

Didn't see most of the bands who went on before 5 pm because of the heat, so missed a few there. But most, even Ms. Lauren Hill, did a fine job.

CANT HANDLE DA HEAT BRO?!?!?!?!?

I got out of the proverbial kitchen during the blazing day heat - followed the shade around my Jeep usually, since my tent was a death trap. And just the walk from car camping 10 to the festival grounds almost killed. My pale Irish skin couldn't take the sun (I'm so white I couldn't walk to the showers with my shirt off without some random Coachellan commenting on how pale I was or "hope he lathered on the sunscreen.") Next year (if I go again), I would love to be closer to the grounds, car camp 5 or 8.

The Aquabats!

So much great stuff. Some i can't put in there because incomplete sets or i was having issues. Example of the issues: i missed being close for Arcade Fire because of the greatness of Suede. i was mingling through the HUGE crowd and was getting bummed by the non fan chatter about little life crap. The band was great as always, but my head and body were out of it. Then i went into the Untitled project, got serenity and was ready to go for a few more hours.

Caveat -- (not on the Main Stage)

1. Two Door Cinema Club -- for those that were there, the Mohave was overflowed, and it was packed outside the tent...so much so that people were cramped outside of the tent.

1. SUEDE - these guys were seriously amazing. Best reunion show I've ever seen at Coachella.
2. PJ Harvey - incredible set. Stripped down, quet and powerful.
3. Arcade Fire - even tho I missed the first few songs by being at Suede they were phenomenal.
4. Cut/Copy - crowd was full of energy, super fun, and their set was fantastic.
5. Cage the Elephant - even though this is the third time I've seen them, they were rad and played a lot of tracks from their second album which I love and hadn't seen them perform.

Cut Copy/CSS (I can't decide)

Obviously, Sunday was a highlight for me. It topped by Saturday 2007 as favorite Coachella day.

Surprise set of weekend: Monarchy. Seriously, based on reviews I have read, I totally ignored them. Trying to escape the harpy screeching of Crystal Castles, we walked by this and they sounded good. By the end, I was trying to get everyone else in my posse to join.

Caveat: had to fly home on Sunday

1. Cut Copy - most enthusiastic crowd I saw all weekend; pure fun
2. Empire of the Sun - maybe the most unique set I saw all weekend; thought they could have sounded a little bit better, but the visuals made up for a lot; and the hits sounded really good and got the crowd going
3. Robyn - again, a very energetic set; she's a great performer
4. Sleigh Bells - LOUD and awesome; Friday had gotten off to a little bit of a slow start for me, but this was like BOOM
5. Foals - I think this band has the potential to get really big, like headliner big, at some point. They looked really young, and they're already really good performers/songwriters/musicians. If this set wasn't at 3:15 PM right at the hottest part of the day, I think even more people would be talking about it. Next time around they deserve a later slot on the outdoor stage.

Arcade Fire get an honorable mention for me. I think if I were closer up, they might squeeze into the Top 5. I wasn't SO far back, but I stayed through all of EOTS, so I wasn't SO far up either. It was a great show, but nothing's going to beat that first time I saw them back in 2005. "Wake Up" was probably the #1 Coachella moment of 2011 for me, though.

-Arcade Fire - One of my favorite bands. First time for me seeing them in a festival setting.
-Cut Copy - I was front left and absorbed into a jumping/dancing group of sexy college bros.
-Broken Social Scene - Wasn't digging Lisa's solo stuff so much, but they are a great band and a major highlight from the weekend.
-Presets - Another favorite band of mine. The mojave wasn't packed so I had tons of room to dance and go crazy :)

Didn't see most of the bands who went on before 5 pm because of the heat, so missed a few there. But most, even Ms. Lauren Hill, did a fine job.

I am such a Sleighbells fan. I only caught the last three songs of their set:-( I was up front for them last year. For some reason, I felt I had to see Interpol. They just didn't do it for me after 3 songs. I literally ran to catch my Sleighbells and was really surprised by the crowd.

I am happy that they rock the stage even better than last year. Wish I could have been closer.

No legendary, will-talk-about-for-years acts, which kinda puts it in perspective compared to the years past (there were no Prince/Daft Punk/Portishead blow your mind apart performances).

^
This.

Top 5 is really difficult. I had the best time seeing acts who were not necessarily the best musicians and I saw some (what I think) are great musicians in which I felt tired. Based on this, here are my five.

Trentemoller- Just...pure, really talented musicians. Loved the variety. Being able to dance my ass off and cool down with more ambient stuff.

Fedde la Grand- Had way too much fun here. Just loved the energy all around me. Loved his style.

The Kills- Love the chemistry between those two. Been wanting to see this band for a while.

OFF!- Because they woke me the fuck up after Delorean.

Phantagram- I can see them moving up. The singer's voice is beautiful. She is too, nice stage presence.

Honorable mentions: I'm not a huge Arcade Fire fan, but their show was solid and they are humble (not like some other performers that were playing this weekend), the last half of Sleighbells (I fell in love with them last year. Whatever lured me into seeing Interpol??), and accidentally watching Lightning Bolt (thought I was somewhere different or they were some band different), however I was jolted.

No legendary, will-talk-about-for-years acts, which kinda puts it in perspective compared to the years past (there were no Prince/Daft Punk/Portishead blow your mind apart performances). And just a few complete disasters (Cee lo and Ariel Pink...). A very middle of the road-chella.

Since I was there for Portishead and Daft Punk and (bits of) Prince, I can categorically say that you mistaken about this years Coachella.

Chemical bros and Animal Co played legendary performances -- greater experiences than anything you reference. The legends are those who rather than leave a spectacle (Kanye) or perform well on the day (Strokes) actually take the crowd on a voyage -- create a world and experience that is more than a live musical performance. Chemical Bros current tour set is that -- it is a perfectly crafted production and is more of an experience than the Daft Punk 2006 show/2007 tour set. What Animal Co turned out on Saturday was incredible beyond words and defied every expectation I had -- sure I'm a fan but I've seen them before at Coachella where they didn't play what I thought was a great set. This year, they created something amazing, had me grinning throughout and I feel very fortunate to have been there.

And frankly, I know this will make the purists cringe but from a dancing/having fun perspective I thought Chromeo was ridiculously great. If we're talking pure enjoyment I don't know if I've had that much fun at a set before.

But really this weekend was fantastic, there were only two sets I didn't enjoy during the entire event.

I've now seen them 9, 5, and 4 times respectively and all were by far the best shows I've seen from them.

4. Trentemoller

Went to this having only heard one album a few times and hearing good things about their live show... but fuck this blew me away. Sounded so fantastic, it was beautiful to turn around and look at the sunset during one of the more ambient moments. Figured it would be good, but nowhere near as good as it was.

5. Leftfield

I didn't catch the whole thing, saw the beginning until 10:15, so about 30 minutes, but I was mesmerized. The crowd was awesome, the music even better. I had never heard anything from them, just knew it was a big deal they were playing. Really struggled to leave, but I had to meet friends for Kanye. Like to be in a big group to end the festival. Really wish I could have seen more, but I am so glad/thankful I saw what I did.

Trentemoeller.
Ratatat.
Mumford&Sons.

1. Arcade Fire - this was my 6th time seeing them and it was basically the same set that I saw a few nights prior, but it was far and away the best performance of theirs I've ever seen. I get into this habit of ranking their shows about halfway through and this time, there was no hesitation that this was the very best within 3 songs. The Creators Project collaboration was only the cherry on top. Their energy & song selection made it seem like they felt they had something to prove and dispel any question that they're a headliner-worthy act. This will give the Portishead shows a tough contest for best of the year.

2. Trentemoller - I didn't even totally familiarize myself with Into the Great Wide Yonder but I had grand expectations based off the video for "Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider Go!" The band was fantastic and had the crowd in the palm of their hands, with everybody dancing. Seriously impressive and just one of the many acts setting Coachella apart from every other festival.

3. Robyn - I saw her in November and was thrilled to not only have a total dance party with all my friends, but to see the set evolve from what she was doing (which was already terrific) a few months ago. She was good enough that I didn't regret missing Sasha, who I've been looking forward to for a long time and who I knew was going to be amazing (and reportedly was). My only wish is that she had traded out "We Dance to the Beat"/"Don't Fucking Tell Me What to Do" with either "Dancehall Queen" or "None of Dem."

4. Foals - I left the Tallest Man on Earth after 20 minutes because I knew I was going to have more fun at Foals, and boy was I right. Their set just seemed like a star-maker, like this is going to propel them to greater popularity like Arcade Fire's set in '05 did. I'm not always the biggest fan of slow songs at festivals (which is weird because the slow songs are the ones I like most when I'm listening to an album at home/in the car) but the build on "Spanish Sahara" was almost masterful. I cannot wait to see them again and wouldn't be surprised if they were one of the repeat acts next year with a prime slot on either the main stage or Outdoor Theatre.

5. PJ Harvey - she sounded terrific, she busted out a lot of her older material, and at the end, she demonstrated she can still rock with the best of them. "All and Everyone" and/or "The Whores Hustle and Hustlers Whore" could have elevated this to a higher slot but Ms. Harvey was the perfect act to end my weekend.

The line was always too long. No one I talked to experienced it, what was it like?

It was an aleatoric chamber with a piece of the song Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space continually looping, with five lights beaming into the center of the space. If you stepped into a light square, you would hear an isolated part of the track, and each light square had a different isolated piece. There was no description of it whatsoever so it was completely about discovery, and finding all the different sound combinations was out of this world.

Full disclosure: Spiritualized is one of my all time favorite acts, so the room was especially moving.

Chemical Brothers- Been waiting so long to see them do a live set, just wow and some of the best visuals I have ever seen.

The Aquabats- Walking to Sahara and as I was passing Mojave they just started, walked in to here a song or two, ended up staying the whole time. That was just a party.

Arcade Fire- I am not that big into them and walked out on them in 07 due to me thinking they were boring. This time around after the set I left thinking it was just an OK set. Looking back on it now do I realize the greatness that set was and now do I understand the love they get on this board.

One Day As a Lion- I know Zack was the main reason why just about everyone was there, but Jon is a fucking beast on the drums and it was great listening to him pound on them.

Sven Vath really impressed me but yea... what aphrael said. I am still getting goosebumps thinking about sunset at Trentemoller.

I am really, really, really sad now that I didn't go in. We stopped by right before Leftfield and there was a ~20 minute line so decided to come back right after... did not realize they were closing it during the headlining set. Missed it by about 10-15 minutes.

1- Chemical Brothers - This was my first electronic set at Coachella after not catching any my first year last year. Holy shit. The visuals and beats (with some help of course) started taking me on a journey... I hit my peak during Swoon and could have wept. The only draw back was a sense of missing something after they stopped (right after Saturate and Believe), my journey never got to come to an end. Its now an obsession to see them again so i can continue what happened to me that night lol

2- Arcade Fire - Only really know Suburbs and some hits from the past, but WOW. I was so into every single song, especially the ones I didnt know. Wake up was so incredible.

3- The Strokes - Besides Julian messing up some lyrics, solid performance of one of my favorite bands.

4- Kanye - Can we get much higher?

5- Mumford and Sons - Sounded great, new songs sounded good and old songs(for lack of a better word) were even better live.

Honorable mention: Ellie Goulding, Gogol Bordello, Rural Alberta Advantage, Cut copy, Brandon Flowers, Two Door Cinema Club, and Cold War Kids.

1. Cage The Elephant- I don't know how anyone who saw this show doesn't have it as their number one. This was the best set I've ever seen from anyone, anywhere. Maybe you had to be close up to appreciate it. I'd be shocked if they aren't headlining the next time they come to coachella.

2. Kanye- I was never a huge Kanye fan,and I get that some people were disappointed that he didn't have a live band/big surprise guest.... but Kanye owned that stage and produced something simultaneously epic and intimate. Amazing.

3. Beardyman- If this guy isn't at least a sub-headliner in two years then there is no justice in the world. He is to dance music what Stephen Hawking is to physics. He is uniquely capable of breaking down the complex into the simple and imparting upon us mere mortals the magnificence of musical creation. If that sounds like needless exaggeration you didn't see the show, or at least were too high to really appreciate what was happening.

4. Big Audio Dynamite - A band I loved as a kid fronted by a rock legend. I was nervous about how they'd hold up after 25 years, but never in my wildest dreams would have believed they could sound that amazing.

5. Aquabats- Been wanting to see them for years and they didn't disappoint. Fun in a bottle.

Honorable Mentions-Brandon Flowers, Duran Duran, Kings of Leon, Interpol, Cold War Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, Angus and Julia Stone

These guys were in my top 5 as well. Love their new material. I think the only drawback to their set was it was in the middle of the afternoon on Saturday. I think they played around 2 in the Gobi in 09, so they are definitely moving up. Hopefully we'll see Joy Formidable on a bigger stage/better slot next time as well. They rocked.

Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group - Basically the new Mars Volta playing new music, likely on the upcoming record. TMV changed my life, there was no way I was missing that. The new material is sharp, groovy and intense as fuck, can't wait to see what's next

Empire of the Sun - Dear lord, this was exactly how I needed to roll the first time, at night, amongst my girl and like-minded friends. It was windy and warm, and the light show is exactly what my wide-eyes needed.

Kanye West - the only headliner I was relatively close for (15-20 people back) and Kanye killed it no doubt. Could he have had more guest spots? Of course, the opening of every hit song with a feature came with a giant 'what if?' notion in my head. Judging by the comments post-show and on these boards, I'm not alone with that sentiment, but I'm not going to diss his set just because Kanye West wanted to play Kanye West songs. We got 23 amazing songs from the biggest attraction in music today, and I got to see it in the Cali desert squished amongst other Kanye fanatics, I won't complain because I can't complain.

Monarchy - We left Crystal Castles to see this under-the-radar act, I wouldn't have known of them if it wasn't for that video posted before the lineup announcement. We had a great spot up-front, my friends were rolling, my girl and I were feeling good and needed to dance. Visually the set could use work, but the strength of the songs really made it what it was, a synthed-out sing-a-long dance party with perfect timing.

Tame Impala - After seeing them in December and Innerspeaker being my favorite of 2010 (still listen to it first thing in the morning), I knew what to expect from the Aussies and they delivered their thick, psyched-out rock just before sunset, fuckin perfect.

So tough, but here it goes:

1. Arcade Fire-Most enjoyable show of the weekend. They were so crisp sounding and extremely humble. Genuinely nice people. Light-up balloon things were awesome.
2.Nas & Damien Marley-Such high energy and amazing song selection.
3.Mumford and Sons-Sounded basically just like the album, but they poured their hearts into that, and it showed.
4.Foals-Just pure awesomeness.
5.Plan B/Black Joe Lewis-Loved these shows for the exact same reasons. Awesome crowds, great sound.

Honorable mentions(In order): DFA 1979, Bright Eyes, Kanye(even though I did take a detour for a while to the Presets), the Black Keys

3. cold war kids, they sounded great!
4. 12th planet, dude put on a great show early in the day he overshadowed excision, skrillex and who ever else played after.

I'm going top 10 because I can't narrow it down to 5.

1) Arcade Fire (Possibly the best set I've seen at Coach, and I've been to all of them.)
2) The National (Sunset on Sunday at the outdoor was breathtaking. These guys brought the house down. I feel bad for those who skipped them for Duran Duran)
3) Chems (Even though the set was shortened it was fantastic)
4) The Kills (Allison Mosshart is so goddamn sexy!! Great set)
5) Menomena ( Walked right up front for this one, they did not dissapoint. Those of you who got out there early on Sunday were rewarded.)
6) Foals (Great energy, they really started off Saturday on the right track. BTW, Saturday was by far the best run of music I have seen in a single day. Foals- Cage the Elephant- Broken Social Scene- The Kills- One Day as A lion- Mumford and Sons- Animal Collective- Arcade Fire wow!!)
7) Black Keys (Would have been top three if their sound wasn't so shitty. They tore it up!!)
8) Animal Collective (These guys are so fucking talented, great visuals too)
9) The Strokes ( Music was spot on, Julian was a bit wasted, his rambling on got a but annoying. Love the setlist though.)
10) Tame Impala (Those who were there know how great they were)

Honorable Mention- One day as a Lion, Mumford and Sons, Broken Social Scene, Kings of Leon, Cage the Elepjant, DFA 1979, Mars Volta, and the first two acts of Kanye.
