View Full Version : Acts you regret missing?

I figure everyone that has been to Coachella has at least one act they regret missing. I was wondering what some of your biggest regrets were?

For me there is a few (despite the fact that I've only been 1 year):

Vampire Weekend - Got to the fest late on Thursday night and wasn't able to get a wink of sleep. Went back to the campsite and slept on Friday after Them Crooked Vultures (which was at like 9PM). Tiredness was the only excuse to miss them and in hindsight, that isn't a very good excuse.

Whitest Boy Alive - Same problem as with Vampire Weekend. I was just too tired to see them that day and I really wish I hadn't been. I heard they put on a killer set, which makes me even more upset that I missed it.

2 Many DJs - A friend I was with insisted we see Tiesto because "he puts on an amazing live set". His set wasn't really that exciting and I wish I had just gone with my gut and seen what I wanted to see.

for sure Whitest Boy Alive was my highlight last year, i also saw Mayer Hawthorne, The Cure, and Public Enemy...ha ha ha but in exchange I missed Deadmau5 set. I had seen twice before but I heard his Coachella set was way better. However, the worst miss will be this year cuz I was caught off gaurd with quickness of sell out of tickets....ugh...sigh

2006--Gnarls Barkley, Daft Punk (don't ask, it still hurts to talk about it)

2009--Throbbing Gristle (why did I stay at the Cure when I've seen them a ton?--husband came back with his eyes the size of saucers and I knew I had fucked up big)

2010--Wow, nobody I guess! Well, Yeasayer but we were stuck in the gnarled ball of entry.

Fever Ray...Missed because the group who's rented house I was staying at was ready to leave shortly after Jay-Z started.

The lamest part about the whole ordeal was that it wasn't until about 1:00 a.m. when we found out they accidentally only rented the house for Saturday and Sunday...

Definitely Beirut in 2009.

I saw a few songs of Beirut's set but was unfortunately drawn away by the knowledge that Morrissey, my obsession at the time who I had seen three times prior, was playing on the main stage. I ran over to Morrissey to see him play a song he's played every time I've seen him ("Irish Blood, English Heart") and then ran back... to the Sahara to watch Girl Talk be late and then play music consisting of songs that haven't been very relevant for a number of years. Some girl with long hair was standing in front of me during Girl Talk's set. She kept jumping in the air. Each time she did this her long hair would somehow enter my mouth. This factor was what made me realize that I had made a horrible mistake.

Plump DJs is one of mine. I couldn't get away from my non-music-loving friends who just wanted to hang out in the beer gardens. Arrgh!!

2ManyDJs is my only other. Different non-music-loving friends who were giving me a ride wanted to leave early. Booo!

Lessons Learned:
- Friends are bad at Coachella.
- Camp or rent your own vehicle.

I was hanging out in the beer garden directly behind the Sahara during the Plump DJs, so I heard them but didn't want to go deep into the Sahara. Bad decision.

2010- them crooked vultures, passion pit, plastikman, spoon, deerhunter

2009- friendly fires, fleet foxes, atmosphere, ghostland observatory, public enemy

2008- animal collective, justice, black mountain, slightly stoopid

Jonsi in 2010.

Came up as he was closing his set. Everyone was dead still and silent, and some people were even brought to tears. His beautiful Icelandic voice took over that area of the fest in a good way. Really epic to see, but wish I had seen more.

I passed on Fever Ray and Deadmau5 last year in favor of Jay-Z...I'm not sure if I would have snuck off to catch their sets for a little bit; but I definitely had no choice but to solely stay at Jay-Z as my girlfriend was in attendance with me.

After Jay-Z ended I quickly tried making a B-line for the Sahara tent...I had just passed the Mojave tent when the masses from the Sahara started coming my way...too late. Jay-Z went on at 10:50 and Deadmau5 from 11:35 - 12:50.

You act like you weren't singing along to every single song.

I totally nubbed it last year, and didnt do much research ahead of time. Therefore, I missed a few acts that I would love to see now. Others that I knew about I missed for other dumb reasons

Friday 2010: Dillinger Escape Plan (I hadnt slept in nearly 2 days, so I was resting at my tent), Wolfgang Gartner

Saturday 2010: The Temper Trap, Bassnectar (caught the last song), 2ManyDJ's (in favor of Tiesto, rookie mistake. Never listening to my friend's terrible taste in music again)

Sunday 2010: Infected Mushroom

This year, Im making sure Im much better prepared. Researched the entire lineup, and Ill be planning who I see ahead of time

Ive been to the last 5 coachellas, and Ive only regretted missing a couple bands:

Dungen in 2006(Somewhere around this year if not 2006)

There was bad conflict between beach house and band of skulls. Im a more loyal fan to beach house, but I couldnt deny how much better they sounded at that hour of the day.

I missed Les Claypool last year, but Im almost 100% sure that the Dead Weather was the better choice(This had to have been one of their best shows ever, the following Palladium show wasnt half as good)

My biggest regret is missing Beirut in 2009. For no good reason other than I had just had my face fucked by Ghostland's lasers. What an idiot.

2006 - Daft Punk. I believe I was watching She Wants Revenge. I don't know what I was thinking.

Almost same shit here...that was my virgin year and I was there to see Depeche Mode (haven't missed a year since). After DM, we stopped to see She Wants Revenge before going over to Daft. What the fuck was I thinking.?? I mean, I liked daft and used to spin homework quite often at underground parties, and i was like ok...lets check em out...little did we know. We caught them for the last 25 mins or so, but it was almost life changing. Fucking Epic!! The best Coachella performance ever hands down (well, at least for me and my gf).

Well we ended up catching the pyramid again a few months later at the LA sports arena...atonement, for such ignorance.

I love depeche, but I would trade 1 daft punk alive show for 5 depeche shows.

This'll be my first Coachella, and I'm trying to do my research so that I don't miss out on anyone... I was hoping to do it based on the schedule, but I didn't realize until recently how late the schedule comes out.

Went to Bonnaroo in '08 and missed MMJ's 4 hour late night set (it was raining, I was drunk... I was on my way to MMJ but got sidetracked at the indoor karoke tent... for 3 hours. In my defence, the karoke tent at least had a live band for backup). Also missed Sigur Ros's late night set...it was after Pearl Jam and I was too exhausted to walk over to Sigur Ros's stage... will always regret it. Also missed the Raconteurs because I was at at backstage barbeque (and I'm a vegetarian!)

Agreed on the second half of Sir Paul. The first half was surprisingly low-key for a headliner, and we took advantage of getting out ahead of traffic. We heard all of the hits as we were walking to the parking lot.

I had tears of joy during this performance. The crowd participation for their show was unreal. There was an unnaturally good vibe circulating in the audience, I remember thinking "This is like the most genuinely happy audience Ive ever seen at coachella" I hope they headline in the next couple years, they definitly know how to get a crowd going.

Seen 'em once in a small venue and once at Lolla a few years ago- LOTS of energy and a helluva lotta fun, but much better in a smaller space IMO. Their stage presence is crazy- switching instruments with each other almost every song. Highly recommended.

Double agreed. i was exhausted and after the first half my body said "Get thee some rest". That year i was parked behind the Sahara and walked through every tent during my exit. When i was in my car taking care of the sorting of camera stuff, i could hear the greatness i was missing. To read it here and see the clips, it still hurts. Oh man...last year I came down with a cold the Thursday before Coachella so I took it easy the first day; also I left LA late not anticipating the traffic (rookie mistake). Between those two factors I missed She & Him, Benny Benassi, and Deadmau5.

Saturday I also arrived a bit late and missed Camera Obscura and Temper Trap.

I also missed several acts due to sheer ignorance (I "discovered" them later): Sleigh Bells, Passion Pit, Grizzly Bear, The Whitest Boy Alive, the XX, Hot Chip, Bassnectar, Yo La Tengo, the Glitch Mob, and The Big Pink.

I had a great time but in retrospect I did Coachella ALL WRONG last year. This year I am a Woman With A Plan.

2006 - all of it, especially daft punk, wish i had been there.

2007, wish i'd seen LCD & Rapture in the Sahara

2008, missed it, will always wish i'd seen animal collective (though I saw them at the wiltern that year), roger, portishead, aphex, battles, man man, teenagers, fuck...

2009, wish i'd gone to beirut, los campesinos!, presets, gang gang dance, amanda palmer

2010 - i really nailed the festival that year and i have basically no regrets. it would have been cool to see Pretty Lights, I guess, but whatever. i missed half of girls on saturday because of traffic, that was crappy. i picked Pavement and Thom Y. over Plastikman and Orbital... That sucked but there wasn't much I could do about the situation. I know this is remembered as the clusterfucked year but I fucking loved every minute of it. I really appreciate the love for Whitest Boy Alive in this thread - they played 1517 during Hova's fireworks show and life was perfect.

2011 - I regret being tired out after partying too hard on Saturday night. I made it through Sunday but got lazy and trapped on the west half of the field for Duran Duran, Strokes and Kanye. In doing so I missed trentemoller, leftfield, lightning bolt and the presets (again!) which was stupid. lil b would have been fun. and it was a shame to miss gayngs, should have stuck to the mojave after robyn.

our group got a great spot for chem bros, just infront of the sound booth main stage. had to wait it out for a little bit because they were late getting started. in the middle of the set my gf's friend wants to check out boyz noize. i laugh and say go ahead :) they actually left in the middle of the chem bros set at the main stage (front and center) to catch the last 15 min of boyz noize in the sahara, only to hear the chemical brothers still goin off on the main stage

Ouch, missing Cohen is a crusher. I can't believe how great he was and he'll never be there again. Also, I beg to differ about Arcade Fire. That show was WAY better than the OSL show. Go back and listen to the Coachella set and compare it to any other show from that tour. Their energy level was at an all time high. It was Win's birthday and he made the most of it. Those glowing balls was still one of the coolest stunts I've ever seen at a show.

OK, to correct myself, when I said "better" I didn't mean a huge difference. The two Arcade Fire performances I'd say were comparable (again with the balls being the glaring difference), so perhaps it's just a matter of perception and personal experience. Much better spot and much better crowd vibe around me at OL.

The point, however, is that Suede was killing it, and I'm a fool for leaving early.

A guy standing onstage not singing the songs we came to hear, while also complaining the audience didn't care about him ("you don't love me"). My friend left two minutes into the whole thing and I joined her on the grass shortly thereafter. It was terrible.

2010 - Grizzly Bear, Yeasayer, Sleigh Bells
2011 - Beardyman, Sleigh Bells (I fucked up TWICE)

Speaking of Beardyman, can anyone else confirm that 2011's Friday 8 PM to 9:30 PM was the biggest clusterfuck of conflicted acts in the history of the world?

I regret missing Elbow & Bright Eyes last year.

And the year before that, Beach House.

Side note: I missed Bright Eyes for Chipotle last year. Yet another example of how alcohol impairs your judgement.

You didn't miss much at Beardyman. Some guy in a Banana suite was climbing and hanging upside down from the dome. It didn't sound right, outside of the dome anyways. People were just standing around talking about how good he was at other venues they had seen him at.

Wheres the beef?

I regret missing 2004...such a fantastic line-up.

2005: Spoon, NIN, BLACK STAR (!!)
2006: Daft Punk (I could hear them from the campground and was kicking myself for not being there the entire time; my friends are emo, and I guess I am too for not sucking it up and going alone), Atmosphere, Sleater-Kinney
2007: Jose Gonzalez

It's balls to the post-hardcore-wall this year

while i have some regrets (its coachella, its inevitable) i'd say i've done pretty damn good over the years, especially looking at some of your lists. most of the bands i've missed have been out of ignorance except for a few i missed in 2011 due to some complicated situations with my party

2011 - lauryn hill, odd future (waited around 20-30 mins for them to go on, finally gave up), arcade fire, animal collective, B.A.D., CSS, walked out during the presets specifically during the epic build in "are you the one" due to a medical emergency and i'd been looking forward to that set more than anything the whole weekend

2010 - LCD soundsystem, couldnt even get in the tent for yeasayer so i only caught a song or two, john waters, mew (fucking volcano), sly stone meltdown (tho in retrospect i might have walked through this not realizing wtf it was), gary numan (fucking volcano), die antwoord (i didnt "get" them yet and i should never have listed to all the negative nancy's on this forum)

2009 - most of leonard cohen, leaving leonard to rest between mojave and sahara during ghostland and not going in to have my face melted, beirut, ariel pink, most of throbbing gristle

2008 - enter shikari, minus the bear, calvin harris, man man, missing most of kraftwerk

2007 - jesus and mary chain, peaches (for lulz), sparklehorse, cocorosie, fields

2006 - only went saturday

2005 - didnt go, should have

2004 - trail of dead, le tigre

2001-2003 - didnt go but i feel if i had to miss any years these were good ones to miss, no regrets to that

1999 - mr. scruff, cornelius, gus gus

I was hanging out in the beer garden directly behind the Sahara during the Plump DJs, so I heard them but didn't want to go deep into the Sahara. Bad decision.

Hanging out at the beer garden is cool but then you miss stuff. I HATE the fact that you can't buy beer and then leave the beer garden to go see the acts that you are missing. After all..... I'm there for the music NOT the beer. Having both together at the same time is what I call my kind of fun.

I passed on Fever Ray and Deadmau5 last year in favor of Jay-Z...I'm not sure if I would have snuck off to catch their sets for a little bit; but I definitely had no choice but to solely stay at Jay-Z as my girlfriend was in attendance with me.

Love Deadmau5. I get a kick out of those individuals that encase themselves in a really hot outfit all day long in 100 degree plus heat! Surprising they don't faint from the weight of the Deadmau5 mask ....

You didn't miss much with Fatboy Slim. He didn't play anything recognizable, at least while I was there...I did leave early in protest.

Cut Copy was awesome last year! I went and bought the album after I heard them live.

Good bump.
Wish I saw more of
Warpaint
Beardyman (even though I caught some of his set this is my biggest regret)
Bright Eyes
Daedalus
Mariachi El Bronx
Acts I completely missed
Empire of the Sun (damn you acid!)
Ratatat
Chromeo
Phantogram

Empire of the Sun was towards the end of the day....close to midnight. It was a good closing act on a VERY good day.

Slap me, please. I saw Rufus Wainright instead of Arcade Fire. Stupid decision.
