Stolen from brooklynvegan:

The Pitchfork Music Festival will be three days this year - July 13, 14, & 15. Friday night is in conjunction with ATP, and this is pretty cool:

In an exciting fusion of forces behind festivals from opposite sides of the Atlantic, Pitchfork will team up with the UK event All Tomorrow's Parties to present a bill dubbed DON'T LOOK BACK. The Friday night lineup will highlight legendary rock, rap and experimental acts, each performing one of their classic albums in its entirety.

"The 2007 Pitchfork Music Festival will present more than 40 acts on three stages over three days." First announced acts: CAT POWER, CLIPSE, IRON & WINE, GRIZZLY BEAR and PROFESSOR MURDER (all scheduled to appear Saturday, July 14) and OF MONTREAL, GIRL TALK, JAMIE LIDELL and KEN VANDERMARK'S POWERHOUSE SOUND (set to play Sunday, July 15). Tickets on sale Monday.

God, if Neutral Milk Hotel plays on Friday, I'd die, but I don't see that ever happening.

You forgot to mention that they're going to have a stage opening night where influential acts play their "classic albums" in their entirety.

"Opening night will be devoted to "legendary" rock, rap and experimental music performers, each doing a "classic album" in its entirety, a festival spokesman says."

Sorry, didn't see it.....guess I'm just too freakin' excited!

Who do you think the "legendary" acts will be?

Last year I had VIP passes, and it was the most fun I've ever had in my entire life. I ate a ton of free ice cream from the ice cream dude, free whiskey at the aftershow party and got to stalk devendra banhart. The lineup is so good for the price. They do a really good job of booking a diverse lineup, as for bigger band. I could see Arcade Fire, or maybe Sufjan headlining.

Lame.

I mean don't get me wrong I'd love to see the SY and though I don't know Slint very well I can understand why that'd fit like shit but it becomes less special if the artists do the same thing over and over. And there are a ton of deserving artists/albums.

That was my guess. But that would also be copying their previous shows. I'm thinking that they coup have a total coup and have a popular Chicago area band perform..."Gish" or something like that.

Then again, Flaming Lips could do Soft Bulletin, MBV could pull a not-gonna-happen and do Loveless, D-Play could do Emergency & I, Breeders could do Last Splash...or Slanted & Enchanted (yeah, I know...never)?

FakePlasticMe
03-09-2007, 01:43 PM
It a) would not be Smashing Pumpkins....this is a small, primarily underground festival that is dirt cheap and, as I said small. Union Park is nowhere near Grant Park, and having a band as big as SP in Chicago would sell out in seconds and b)it would not be Gish, it would be Mellon Collie (either CD 1 or 2). It was much more definitive than Gish.

I would think that Siamese Dream was the most definitive SP album

Pitchfork just posted all this on their page.

My favorite quote is this:

"...For the unfamiliar, ATP and Don't Look Back invite music legends to perform their seminal albums live -- in their entireties. We aren't quite ready to reveal Friday's performers, but trust us: You will not be disappointed."

My guess: Jeff Mangum performing In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

There is no way that is happening. Loveless is more likely.

I think MBV is due for a comeback by default, seriously. Isn't Kevin Shields out of cash yet? Is he seriously making enough money off doing Bow wow wow remixes to live on?

dorkfish
03-09-2007, 03:02 PM
seminal and definitive are completely different concepts. the atp don't look back shows are usually the classic seminal albums, not definitive albums. for example, belle & sebastian did if you're feeling sinister instead of boy with the arab strap

Who cares if they do the same show? I don't have to buy a plane ticket to the U.K. now! I just saved thousands of dollars to see the same show if it is the same lineup. Whats to complain about? I just wonder if SY are going to be doing a meaty poriton of Daydream at Coachella as a warm up.

Kiefer
04-20-2007, 09:09 PM
last year we just stayed close to o'hare area, just cuz it was cheaper, and its not too bad a drive into town for this. i don't know how people can complain that 'they're so broke' since this festival's tickets cost 20% of what coachella's cost. then again, i had to fly in from WI so coachella makes me broke, but pitchfork is a no-brainer. you can get a hotel around ohare for like 50 a night if you look thoroughly. i cant believe fucking liquid swords. word.

mountmccabe
04-21-2007, 09:32 AM
Pitchy would be lovely (still would be far more excited about SY than Slint or GZA) but you're right, Kiefer; it's the flight for me.

And Pitchy is barely comparable to Coachella. Minor leagues versus the Majors, you know. Throughout most of the day there'll be more people at the Coachella stage than the total at Pitchy.

If I lived within a 10 hour drive I would totes go and plan on going forever, tho.

Courtney
04-21-2007, 12:13 PM
Airfare is $279 from Los Angeles. It's the most expensive part of the trip by far.

I don't mind that it's smaller. In fact, it's sort of nice not to be totally overwhelmed with checking out a million smaller acts and just have a very selectively curated selection of bands. Not that I'm dissing Coachella at all -- but I think one Coachella per year is enough.

I still haven't decided whether or not I can do this feasibly.

bmack, there's a Gogol Bordello show at the Vic theater Sunday night. But it starts early; you have to leave the fest early to catch it. I'm still undecided on it.
Also, I have two extra Friday tix, face value, or less if I find you amusing. Discounts also available for short people, and people who are nice to animals. PM me.

Bryan, I can't remember the name of the jazz shop I went into when I was there last summer, but it was awesome. I can't even remember the street. But it was tons of jazz vinyl. I kind of went crazy.

Also, I happened upon a free Amadou & Mariam/Seu Jorge show in the park with the amphitheater (Logan? I can't remember what it is called. But it is new). Maybe you will get that lucky as well.

Just got back from night one. It was great. Slint, GZA and Sonic Youth playing their classics. Slint opened the night, and were fantastic. Spot on brilliant, and they closed with a new song. It started off strange, but by the end it turned into something fantastic. I got video of the whole song (9 minutes) and, if the sound is alright, i'll post it when i get back to LA. GZA started off a bit spotty, but by the end he was pretty great. he closed with an ODB track, and it was really impressive. Sonic Youth did Daydream Nation and it sounded as awesome as I expected it to. I've seen them a number of times, and this was definitely the best of them. They played the whole album and encored with Incinerate, Reena and Jams Run Free. More updates tomorrow.

It's been sitting in the 80s the past two days, which has been really nice. Looks like another nice day out today. Get to see Mastodon, Twilight Sad, Grizzly Bear, Califone, Voxtrot, BATTLES, Girl Talk, Cat Power and Iron and Wine today. Sounds pretty damn good to me.

Andrew, I found an amazing jazz shop when I was wandering around the city. I stayed there for over an hour, and it was great. That park is called Millenium, and I saw Toumani Diabate with Vieux Farka Toure there, so I'd dare say I got that lucky. I was in tears at the end because their performance was so amazing. They were doing things on guitar that I've never imagined before.

Well, here's how the day went. I showed up at 11, and the gates didn't end up opening until 12:45, which was 45 minutes late. Still, the Twilight Sad went on as scheduled. I enjoy their album alright, but live they are fantastic. Much louder and more shimmery, in a fantastic sort of way. Check them out if at all possible. After that, I went to the other stage to see Califone. They were 10 minutes late, but it was well worth it. They had a horn section and played from a wide variety of their albums, despite the 30 minute set length. Many of the songs started slowly, and even awkwardly, but built to powerful endings. Another one well worth seeing. After that, it was back to the C stage to see Voxtrot. I was kinda far back for them, as I had a good spot for Califone, but they were really good. Ramesh is a damn entertaining frontman, and the band exudes spunk. I'd like to see them in a club rather than festival setting. Grizzly Bear next, and I stayed sort of far back, for reasons I will soon describe. This was the last song on their tour, but it didnt' show. These guys are one of my absolute favorite live acts, and they didn't disappoint at all. I left slightly early to stake out my spot for Battles. The stage was packed, but I got a fairly good spot. By the time they came on, probably 90% of the crowd was there to see them. They were definitely good, but sometimes too technical for me without any emotion to back it up. I'd like to see them again, and they said they'll be in LA on Halloween at the Fonda. I only saw Iron and Wine from afar, as I wanted a good spot for Mastodon (and I got it; on the rail, front row center) but what I heard was cool. The new material was much more upbeat, and they mostly stuck to that. Sam played one song on his own as an encore. Mastodon were, as I expected, the set of the day. They absolutely destroyed the stage. My ribs are killing me from the moshing, and they drew a huge crowd of fans, press and fellow artists; the whole area was overflowing. Mastodon are performers of the first order; they had the crowd in the palm of their hands, and they made us their slaves. I got some great pics that I'll post when I get back to LA. About halfway thru the set, i looked to the back of the stage and saw Chris and Chris from Grizzly Bear. I'd booked a show for them before, and apparently they remembered me,
because they came over and took some pictures and shot the shit after Mastodon were done. After that, I went to see Clipse, and they were on fire. They put on a much better show than at the El Rey earlier this year. They had tons of energy and were flowing like the kings of the crowd. Cat Power followed them. Her vocals were off the whole set, but I enjoyed the sound of her voice, and the band was spot-on. I'd like to see her again. The night closed with Yoko Ono. I caught three songs, and decided that was more than enough.

More updates when I get back to LA on monday.

supposedly the dan deacon gig got shut down by the fire marshall cuz there were just too many people and it was overcrowded. so they shut down the power to that stage until people cooled off. but in the end i hear he cut his gig short (thank god...)

yoko ono was fabulous! shes fuckin crazy. didnt get a pass to the show but i did get to sneak my camera in ;)

i saw twilight sad, and i was sad they only played for like 30 mins.
then voxtrot (which i thought was kinda boring, i saw them a few months ago and thought they were good then)
then beach house (i love them as usual. we bumped into them last night. i didnt dare say hi to them. the dude in the band is too gorgeous)
fujiya and miyagi bored me to death. and i was kinda front row for that. shouldve gone to see battles instead. i dunno why people liked f&m so much.

then clipse. i dont like rap/ hip hop, but they were good and i respect that. im surprised by how many white kids there memorized the lyrics.
then waited around the front for yoko ono. like i said before, shes fuckin nuts. then she did a song with thurston moore (malberry (sp?)) i dunno some song. he also played with yoko's band on a few other songs.

for her gig, she gave out shit load of little flashlights to flash to the stage during her act. flash once means I. twice Love three times You. it's kinda retarded. shes so old like 70 ish but shes still pretty active on stage.

goddamn i wish i had one of those vip passes. note to self: dont decide to go two weeks prior to event...

So here goes

Yesterday, knowing that Deerhunter started off the day, I showed up around 11 and was one of the first people into the festival grounds. They were setting up when we got there, and Bradford was showing Dan from Grizzly Bear how to play one of the songs. They came on about 10-15 minutes late to rapturous applause, and Bradford was wearing a crazy looking dress. They proceeded to absolutely astound the audience. They were louder and more experimental than the last time I saw them, and the set was great. Also, during "Strange Lights," Chris Bear and Dan from Grizzly Bear came out to play with them. After them, people headed over to catch the Ponys, but I stayed behind to keep my spot for Menomena. The Ponys sounded really good, but I'm glad I stayed behind. Menomena started about half an hour late and shortened their set, but they were so good. Those three guys can make one helluva racket, busting out Glockenspiels and Saxophones. See them if you can. I went over to see the Junior Boys/get some lunch after that. What I heard of the Junior boys was entertaining, even if they aren't overly exciting live. I saw the Sea and Cake from somewhat far back. They were fun, but far from the best set of the weekend. I walked over early to catch Jamie Lidell's set on the main stage. He came out in a ridiculous suit and absolutely threw down. He was one of the highlights of the weekend for me. His performance has gained so much more energy, and he really streamlined his experiments. I left that stage a little early to get a good spot for Malkmus, and I don't regret it. His voice was somewhat strained and it was just him with an acoustic/electric guitar (he was joined by "Bob" on drums for renditions of Trigger Cut and In the Mouth a Desert) but it was so much fun. He played some new songs and a good mix of Jicks and Pavement material, closing with We Dance. He had the largest call for an Encore, but didn't respond. People flocked over to see Of Montreal, and I tried to get a good spot for the New Pornos. I regret this, as Of Montreal pulled out all the stops on their show this time, bringing an inflatable suit out, having ninja football battles, ladling goo onto the crowd and generally causing mayhem. They encored with a cover of All Day and All of the Night, and seemed to be really pushing themselves. The New Pornos came on right as scheduled, without Neko Case or Dan Bejar. They kicked into their first song, and I was attacked by a barrage of bass. It was so high that I could feel it in every part of my body, and it erased the rest of the instruments. The worst sound mix of the weekend, and I couldn't take it, so I went to see if Klaxons were on. The Field was still playing when I got over there, and he was good, if also a bit bass heavy. I waited for Klaxons until 9, but they hadn't showed, so I went over to see De La Soul. When I'd seen them before, they seemed disinterested and bored, but here they had tons of energy and it really communicated to the crowd. At one point their DJ said that he had to go to the bathroom, and asked if it was okay for him to bring out a friend, which he did, and Prince Paul came out for a few tracks, which was stellar. All in all, they far exceeded my expectations, and I would see them again in a hot minute. I left the venue, went to a bar in Wicker Park and waited around for my flight, which left Chicago at 6 this morning. I'll be back in Chicago again next summer, and for the foreseeable future, because Pitchfork fest is extremely well run, and the music was great.

Man I want to see Malkmus so baaaad. Someday.

Thoroughly awesome reviews, Bmack, way to be the coachella board correspondent.

I think I'm having an attack of reverse racism. All of these geeky white dudes look exactly the same to me, except for Mastodon and Malkmus. And maybe that freaky Deerhunter kid.

Good reviews though bro. Thank you.

My Slint video turned out okay. The video quality isn't very good, but the sound is better than I expected it to be, with the bass only occassionally over-riding everything else. I'm posting it to youtube right now.

Edit: It's too big for Youtube, so I'll megaupload it for anyone interested

I'll bet you Gabe is interested. You should put it in his thread, as a present.

I was thinkin' that. I'm definitely gonna get it to him somehow. The ending is awesome.

Oh man. I had just assumed it would be Malkmus + Jicks but the site doesn't say the Jicks so I was being dumb but I am still shocked. I've seen Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks three times now and there hasn't been a touch of Pavement ever.

Anyway it does sound like an awesome weekend. I would have loved to've been able to go.

Yeah, about half the stuff was Pavement. It was really cool. Lots of Crooked Rain material.

Also the festival was good. Really good. I might say more later when I am less sleepy. Most of my photos look like above, featuring some mighty fine backs of heads. I won't subject you all to the full mass of them. But here are a few:
