View Full Version : Most disappointing live acts at Coachella

Which acts on the 2011 lineup should be avoided because they consistently fail to impress when they play concerts? (Even though they may sound good in the studio.)

Best Coast... Saw them at FYF. Or maybe it was just the festival that sucked.

Haha I passed out under a tree after during Best Coast at FYF due to a mix of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and disappointment. I will definitely not waste my time on them this year. And overall, I thought FYF was a great value. You can't expect anything better than what it was for only $25. (Although I do wish there was more than one water fountain at the entire festival.)

The water issue and lack of food trucks (they claimed to have 12, there were only two) was my only big issue. I can deal with the heat. At least I wasn't one of the unlucky ones who purchased a VIP ticket for FYF. $25 isn't bad, but $75 is not something I'd want to pay on top of how much I spent on water.

I saw something awesome at FYF...
While everyone was waiting in line for water, a golf cart pulled up with a bunch of palates of water to resuply the booth. Then some kid steals a palate of water... And wile being chased disappears into the crowd. The all of a sudden I can see an eruption of water bottles flying through the air sharing bottles with everyone. I kinda look at him as the Robbin hood of FYF.

I missed that, sadly. Wish I was there to enjoy free water. FYF was a downer for me, I was looking forward to seeing Delorean but something happened to the speakers and they stopped working. Luckily they'll be at Coachella this year! :)

Gorillaz from last year. Speaking of free water, my girl and I found a large trashbag full of cold water behind a trash can last year at Coachella. We found it on Saturday and there was still plenty left on Sunday. So whoever's treat it was, thank you!

Speaking of free water
I just walked into the fest on Saturday last year when some guy to my left just started yelling, "ICE COLD WATER, FREE!" before anyone could even look I ran up and yelled "Here!" The guy tossed me a freezing bottle of water in midday, he was Jesus incarnate.

LoL because they were soo off time and there instrument were out of tune. The way they left the stage was gangster. BTW I wouldn't be drinking out of trashbags of water, probably was melted ice water they use for cooling off water bottles they sell. Think of all the dirty hands that your gf was drinking.

The Radio Dept. was really, really bad when I saw them last week. I just don't think their live sound translates at all. They had a drum machine that was louder than any of the actual instruments...it was not good.

This is rather discouraging; I was looking forward to their set a lot. Could the drum machine problem have been because of poor mixing at the venue?

I don't think so. That venue has some of the best sound in the entire city and I've never had a problem there before. Also it was their second night there. Apparently they don't tour very often. My advice is that you should still check them out if there are no other conflicts or anything since you like their music, but if there is a conflict opt out of seeing them.

Thanks for the info; much appreciated. I have a feeling that Coachella 2011 will be The Year of the Half Set, so if they aren't very good I won't feel too bad about leaving early ;)

As much as it pains me to say thins, I think Interpol is not a good fit for Coachella. They really need to be in a smaller, intimate venue. Just saw them a couple weeks ago in san Diego, and was underwhelmed.
Cold War Kids struggle live as well.

I kinda liked Black Keys till I saw them live; I've seen them twice since AND barring conflicts will see them again.
Animal Collective let me down. I saw them on tour for strawberry jam (which i loved) in 2007 and their songs seemed like a mess. I appreciate when a band can remake their songs for their live performances but I didn't feel they did a good enough job. At coachella the following year I skipped most of their set to see kraftwerk but a buddy who watched had similar feelings.
I do wanna give them a chance again this year but they're not a top priority.

The only thing that I can say is that i watched about five songs of the Kings of Leon set at last year's Outside Lands and felt absolutely no connection to the music. The egos onstage were no competitiion for the music. It was a band on stage that was pumping out hype and nothing else.

Woh. What is up with all this Black Keys talk? The Black Keys are one of the most badass bands I have ever seen live. I saw them at Bumbershoot 08 playing before STP, and I didn't know much about them. The tore shit up like I couldn't believe.
Then I saw them again in a seated theatre in Vancouver. People kept getting out of their seats trying to stand by the stage before the band started, and security kept telling people to sit. The second the lights went out, the crowd rushed security and from that point on it was just a crazy party. Dan said after they finished the first song "I saw what you guys did when the lights turned off... and I like it!" The band rocked so hard and crowd was just going crazy the whole time. So. Fucking. Bad. Ass.
They are an amazing live band and anyone who says otherwise cannot be trusted. However, I must say their 09 set left a lot to be desired... it was really hot and the crowd was lame. I also heard their ACL 2010 set sucked.... but that was mostly because there was basically no conflict with them and as a result, everyone attending that day was trying to watch them and the stage was way too overcrowded, thus effecting everyones experience.

It was pretty amazing how they managed to fuck up so much that the problems with 2009's fest were easily doubled in 2010, including horrible sound issues, staying on schedule, crowd control, lack of lights, ridiculous ID checking by people who didn't know what they were doing, lack of communication between everyone working there, not enough food and water or places to buy them, a REPEAT of the previous year's willcall problem?
Amazing lineup for an amazing price, but a total clusterfuck in every other way possible!

Best Coast were sooooo boring at FYF!
I've seen Cold War Kids over 30 times and can only recall two sets that were just plain flat. Shit happens. They usually kill it though as long as you're a fan. Have yet to see them since the release of Mine Is Yours though. The only album that I just don't enjoy at all from them. I hope they continue to incorporate a good amount of their older stuff still.
