I did the same thing!

I bought my pass to coachella all stoked to see rage but now that I look into more of the other bands there I'm even more excited! There seems to be alot of good electronic acts. Does that kind of music sound good live? I ask becuase a lot of rap/hip-hop sounds good on the album but just not as good live.

oh man.. please do not refer it to it as "techno" music.. please. Techno is it's genre in electronic music.. Daft Punk would most likely fit the "house" category, but I think they deserve their own genre. LoL, yes "techno" sounds great live.. it sounds EXACTLY the same, because most of the time it's not really live, but a deejay playing exactly what you heard.

it sounds much better live, though it's not really live.

i say it sounds better for 2 reasons. first, the atmosphere at a club adds to the experience. second, the sound system at the club or venue is almost always going to be much better than what you have at home or in the car.

I am amused by how electronica fans feel a need to categorize and subcategorize and sub-subcategorize music. what is it about E that makes people want to put things in boxes?

people do the same thing with rock music. It's all rock n' roll but people tend to categorize it in sub genres.

lol, yet you probably know the difference between indie, hard and alternative rock...

electronica is just the medium, there are many different sounds of electronica that can easily be described using major genres (techno, drum and bass, trance, house) just like there are many different sounds of rock that are described with different genres (like the ones listed above).

exactly.

Next time Tom's at a social function I hope someone comes up to him and asks what his favorite band is and he replies something like The Clash. Then then the person would say "no way, mine is Twisted Sister! What a coincidence. We both like rock bands. Let me introduce you to that Fall Out Boy fan over there. We've got loads to talk about".

electronic music was all called "techno" until someone from the LA times or other publication in 1996 decided to re-christen it "electronica" to make it sound more exotic.
daft punk is absolutely techno.

"techno" was ONCE a catch-all term, but no more. It's a pretentious sub-genre, but "techno" is now actually something different. Daft Punk is not in it.

Techno is not a synonymn for electronica. It's not an LA thing. We take our queues from Europe.

TomAz

amyzzz

well I'm sure not interested in a "daft punk isn't _____! everyone knows it's really _______ and if you don't know it's ______ you're ignorant" contest because those types of arguements always end with people bringing out their resumes of how long they've been in the scene, et cetera et cetera, and in the end the only people left interested are the 2 people flaming eachother over semantics.

I love techno.

No. This isn't a dick measuring contest. It has nothing to do with how long anyone has "been in the scene". I'm not flaming you. It's just that in today's context you're just not quite correct.

It's not a contest (for your sake).
If it was I'd present evidence such as....
Here are 4 of the most popular DJ download sites for electronica in the world
www.beatport.com
www.djdownload.com
www.trackitdown.net
www.junodownload.com

(actually I'll throw in too http://www.addictech.com/ because it's my favorite)

Go look at how they categorize their music. All of them have a "techno" section, which is explicitly different from the other genres you mention.
These are just the first 4 sites pulled up.

Even Ishkur, subcategorizes techno. He's generally regarded as someone who knows a bit about what he's talking about (far more than you or I) even though he takes himself with a grain of salt.

I could go on, but I don't think I have to.

I can't believe they didn't mention Kansas!

when I was in high school these band (meaning marching band) nerds were all into Kansas and would tell me, "they change time signatures! they do stuff like 13/8 time" which sounds just like that wiki article. Kansas fucking sucked, too.

HAHAHAAHAHAAA. My brother and his friends used to be big into pointing out when a band would play in a different time signature. Rush played in all KINDS of different time signatures...it was soooo cool. I was a subscriber to that school of thought too, mainly because my brother's friends were the only friends I had. Time signature changes and polysyllabic scientific lyrics = greatness.

Also, guitar players who could finger tap! That was the shits.
