So you all can know where the inspiration for the current film came from...;)

Description :

An emperor amasses an army of hundreds of thousands, drawn from two continents, to invade a third continent and conquer a tiny, divided nation. Only a few hundred warriors stand against them. Yet the tiny nation is saved. It sounds like the plot of a preposterous fantasy novel. It is historical fact. In 481-480 B.C., King Xerxes of Persia raised forces in Asia and Africa and invaded Greece with an army so huge that it "drank rivers dry." Then they entered the mountain pass of Thermopylae and encountered 300 determined soldiers from Sparta....

Writer-artist Frank Miller and colorist Lynn Varley retell the battle of Thermopylae in the exciting and moving graphic novel 300. They focus on King Leonidas, the young foot soldier Stelios, and the storyteller Dilios to highlight the Spartans' awe-inspiring toughness and valor. Miller and Varley's art is terrific, as always; the combat scenes are especially powerful. And Miller's writing is his best in years. Read it.

I hope it's not as bad as Troy, what a horrendously done, historically inaccurate movie. The soundtrack sucked and the editing sucked too.

Yup. Those kinds of movies aren't even usually what I'm into but I think it looks pretty bad ass. They're playing it in the IMAX around here. I have a booked up weekend but I think I'm going Monday.

i went to an Imax screening earlier today at the Bridge. Every screening on Imax was sold out for the whole day. Killer movie. i have the graphic novel and the film makers did an awesome job recreating it as a film.

There is something that was disturbing me a little, but i think that may be reserved for a film theory discussion. Other than that, fuckin A!

There have been some mixed reviews but I think its just how critics are. I saw it this afternoon and my theater had is Digital Projection so it looked really clean. There are flaws of course to any film but it is visually impressive and was a solid film. I wish Xerces got in on some battle stuff but its all good. And from what I have been reading, a lot of studios want to start trying to make movies with this same kind of look to it..

Edit: And so far friday ticket sales estimates are around 27 million...

i still cant comprehend the fact that 38 million RETARDS went out to see wild hogs over Zodiac last weekend...

schoolofruckus

At least "Wild Hogs" is a family movie, and thus attracted mostly people who wouldn't be going to see "Zodiac" anyway. What about the $70 million worth of retards who will be going to see "300" this weekend instead of "Zodiac"?

I saw it this afternoon in a pretty packed house.

It looks incredible and is a terrific recreation of the Frank Miller style, BUT...

Where's the beef? It's all style over substance.
The dialogue was laughable, I mean, just terrible. Characters were stereotypical and underdeveloped.

And for the rest of the year, all Hollywood movies will be shown at normal speed since the entire year's quota of slo-mo was used up in this movie.

The producers of Gladiator should also consider suing for the uncanny rip-off of their soundtrack. Did they host open Lisa Gerrard soundalike auditions?

Hey, though, if looking at dozens of ripped guys in a leather speedo and red cloak gets you off (and knowing this board, I can think of a few that it would!), you'll love it.

All I could think of when I came out was "that looked great, aren't computers fabulous?"

I thought RuPaul was good as Xerxes, though...

“300” is about as violent as “Apocalypto” and twice as stupid. Adapted from a graphic novel by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, it offers up a bombastic spectacle of honor and betrayal, rendered in images that might have been airbrushed onto a customized van sometime in the late 1970s. The basic story is a good deal older. It’s all about the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, which unfolded at a narrow pass on the coast of Greece whose name translates as Hot Gates. Zack Snyder’s first film, a remake of George Romero’s “Dawn of the Dead,” showed wit as well as technical dexterity. While some of that filmmaking acumen is evident here, the script for “300,” which he wrote with Kurt Johnstad and Michael B. Gordon, is weighed down by the lumbering portentousness of the original book, whose arresting images are themselves undermined by the kind of pomposity that frequently mistakes itself for genius.
