View Full Version : Top 5 New Discoveries Since Lineup Was Released

So, it's been about two weeks since the lineup was released, and I'm sure you're all deep into your research like myself. I've found over the years that there are bands that I've heard of, but never really given them an in depth listen too until they are on the Coachella lineup. My question is this... Which five bands have you gotten into the most, that you had never really listened to before, since the lineup was announced?

My top 5 (so far) are...

1) Broken Social Scene- Had always heard great things, but I never realized how strong they really are!! Love their stage presence as well. Forgiveness Rock Record is amazing.

2) The National- Have always dug The Boxer and High Violet, but I had no idea how amazing they are live. The clips I've seen of them remind me of the energy Arcade Fire puts forth on stage. They are a must see for me.

3) PJ Harvey- Yes, I admit it's embarrassing that I have never given Polly Jean a proper listen. Now that I have, I am digging her. Stories from the City is amazing. How is she live?

4) Trentemoller- Worried about conflicts on Sunday with them. Have a bad feeling they will conflict with DFA 1979 or The National.

5) Tame Impala- These guys are right up my alley. Spacey rock with an excellent rhythm section.

I could name another 10 that I'm really digging, but let's hold it to 5 or so. Curious what you guys are enjoying so far as well.

i'm having a hard time discovering anyone on this line-up that i'm really stoked about... a few new groups seem interesting at best, but nothing i'm willing to go out & purchase. still have a few more groups to look into, though...

1) Francis and the Lights - They are by far my favorite of the "newly discovered bands" they have an energy that I really dig. They rock socks.

2) Skrillex - I know he is a douche-bag but I am going to have to say I have been listening to a lot of his stuff. I am really digging his remixes and I like the collaboration's he does.

3) Trampled by Turtles - This whole folk/country/indie thing is really grabbing me! Last year I was pretty excited for Deertick, The Avett Brothers, and Old Crow Medicine Show. This year Trampled by Turtles takes one of these spots.

4) The Morning Benders - I had never heard of them before but I am more than excited to see them. They are really intriguing to me.

5) Cold Cave - I feel like I am way late on them here. I love new wave and these guys are pretty awesome. I will be checking them out.

1. Clare Maguire - holy crap she's amazing. The next Florence Welch.

2. Glasser - the next Bjork? Sounds amazing. Similar to former Coachella discoveries Fever Ray, Lykke Li.

3. Warpaint - sort of a continuation of a theme - ethereal female vocals with swirly guitars. Kind of like a combination of Ride and the Cocteau Twins.

4. Cold Cave - Yet another small font band from Friday. Love their record and looking forward to their new one releasing right before the fest.

5. Gayngs - love their record. Anything the Bon Iver guys do is solid gold.

Joy Orbison - Always heard his name being tossed around but never gave him a listen - definitely one of my must-sees for the weekend.
SBTRKT
Brandt Brauer Frick - Very interesting group. Should be a good set
TOKiMONSTA - Some of her stuff I'm not so into, but all in all I think she's worth checking out
Alf Alpha/Beardyman- Yeah, that's six but I'm only 1/2 excited about these guys - should be fun though.

Milky

1. Titus Andronicus - I'd listened to them before, but never has intensely as I do now. Really fantastic band and I have a feeling they'll destroy Coachella.

2. Phantogram - I love their sound and her voice melts me.

3. Ratatat - so glad I finally took the time to really invest in these guys. I have become big in the last 2 years on intrumental music (Holy Fuck is an extreme obsession), so this is right up my alley.

4. Twin Shadow - not one I expected to like, but I really dig the 80's vibe this guy gives off. Looking forward to seeing him at Coach and in Seattle.

5. Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77 - not a discovery, just new found excitement when I found out they tour with Dennis Lyxzén. Refused are the greatest band I've never seen, so to see 1 part of them belting out their biggest song will be some sort of religious moment for me. I am also seeing them this weekend, so twice in 2 months is awesome.

1. Sleigh Bells (no, I'm not 14 or female, but I dig their sound, and the singer kinda sounds like Julee Cruise in a few songs, see "Rachel")
2. The Joy Formidable (tons of promise for this fairly new band from Wales)
3. Klaxons (fan of first album and just bought second, which is also good)
4. The National (late to the parade on this one, I know, but they're so good, and the singer's voice does something to me only Dave Gahan had managed before)
5. Suede (rediscovered how much I liked their music, especially "Animal Nitrate")

You won't be disappointed. They're one of my favorite bands to see live and are an absolute dance party.

I went through the entire lineup and checked out, at least, 2 songs by everyone. Of those I liked, I researched more in depth. Here's what I came up with, in no particular order:

The Chemical Brothers (I already knew some of their songs. I just had no idea it was them)
Boys Noize
Joachim Garraud
Magnetic Man
OFF!

Glasser, New Pants, Beardyman, Scala & Kolacny Bros, Lightning Bolt.... honorable mention to Magnetic Man and Phantogram (now i know who does those songs) and OFWGKTA, who i had first heard of through this board but would def have heard by now either way.

Wha?

To be fair, I never voluntarily listened to a single song of his until the lineup was released. I'm generally not a hip hop fan but I told myself I would give his music a chance and I really dig him now.

Glasser. Saw them at SXSW this year, best thing I saw there.
fK51BAkbkP4

Nosaj Thing. I had heard of him but finally was compelled to check out his stuff, awesome! A must see for me.

Twin Shadow. Also saw them at SXSW, still need to give their album a good few listens though. Slow is a great tune though, sounded amazing live.

Leftfield. Dope shit but I have this feeling I will end up missing them due to Sunday's ridiculous lineup.

Trentemoller. Ever since that video they posted on the website I was curious. Saw them at Ultra and wow, just wow. A great mix of electronica and an industrial feel, another great act on Sunday.

I love that Big Audio Dynamite is being reintroduced to people. I think its cool that a band that formed 27 years ago can come to something like coachella and find new life.
