I was introduced to this band a couple of years ago and on the first listen they drew me right in, but it took a couple of listens to fully understand the greatness behind them. They really have it all great lyrics, great musicians, and what I've heard insanely great live performances. The last three albums have been flawless .

Heres some of their catchy tunes to get anyone interested

Anyway, the National: great band, definitely looking forwad to this set. faxman ripped their Bonnarooset from last year, it's up on demonoid.me. also, I suggest checking out Mr. November from Lollapalooza '10. Classic moment.

This (Terrible Love) is one of my favorite songs from The National, and this alternate version is even way better than the one they did on record.

I love The National. It will be my first time to see them live in Coachella '11, and I can't wait.

Also, I think Boxer is a good first record for those who want to get into The National.

Sunset Mainstage. It'll be perfect.

I took my girlfriend to see them last year; she likes concerts, but that was the first time she "got it" -- the, for lack of better phrasing, almost religious experience of seeing a band just transcend live. Their albums are really good, but god damn if they're not one of the best live bands I've ever seen.

Is that something that a couple drinks before the set doesn't cool down?

Before the show until the show's over, I probably drink a bottle of wine, if not a little more. Truthfully that's the way I write the songs, the lyrics, and everything, too.
I'm usually drinking wine and loosening my grip on whatever and letting some of the more primal good stuff come out. I will admit that drinking is a crutch in a way. But it's a very, very useful crutch.

Awesome show. Wish they would have played one of their new singles, but it was still fantastic. I regret not asking at the time, but there was a rather tall man with a facemask standing in front of me very close to the stage and it looked like he took some really good pictures. If you happen to read the boards, would you mind posting a few of those?

facemask? I had a bandanna strapped around my forehead.. and there were some really tall dudes behind me but I don't recall them wearing any masks...

No... this guy was wearing a surgical type mask, I'm assuming for the dust. I didn't catch a name, I only heard that he traveled a lot for work and his life was like "Up in the Air". I know you're out there!

The National's set was one of the weekend's highlights for me. it was almost exactly the same set I heard at ACL last fall. I didn't care. It just sounded so damned good. I just stood there and sang along and played air drums.

This. If I have any complaint at all it would be the setlist but everything was just so perfect it was just beautiful to hear it all and be in that atmosphere. I'm just a bit bored with hearing the Boxer/High Violet set. This is my own fault for seeing them so many times since 2008 though. I know it's been about 12 or so shows.

I have never seen The National before Coachella, I was a little late to the party with them, however after that performance I am IN LOVE with them forever!

The gorgeous sunset/moonrise/breeze just made everything that much more beautiful and amazing.

BUMP once again in case mysterious tall guy who travels a lot, was about ten feet back on the right side of the stage, and was wearing a surgical-type mask wanders into these boards. Your pictures looked like they were turning out really well and I'd love to have one from more or less my point of view. All mine had the top of your head in them.

PS- You're quite tall ;)

I still get chills just thinking about their set. They are one of those bands who sound so much better live than on cd. Has anyone else noticed how great the actual webcast is as well. Whoever shot and mixed that set did a great job. I can't stop watching it. I got a couple great pictures of that glorious sunset that I'm planning on blowing up into a poster for my wall.

They really slayed us here in da Nati. Surrounded by fans, friends and family the band really brought their A game and produced more than one set of goosebumps per person Sunday night.

Their performance was the final act of the MusicNOW festival in Cincy, which is the brainchild of Bryce Devendorf. A bunch of special guests who were also playing at the three-day event had supporting roles throughout other artists' sets, including Sharon Van Etten, Megafaun, Little Scream, Richy Parry (from the Arcade Fire) and Owen Pallet - and the National's set was no different.

The setlist was as such:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5306/5725369984_6a0715dab6.jpg

Which was capped off by my favorite moment (even if people don't understand when they're supposed to clap along), a microphone-less "Vanderlyle". My camera couldn't do it justice but I recorded the moment anyways.

DlNFwwap4zI

I also got "Exile Vilify" earlier in the night, which was played for the first time ever for us...

Y1PfA0GYRXY

And finally, I took a heap worth of pictures that you're welcome to go through here on my flickr page (http://flic.kr/s/aHsjuN3Aud).

Probably my favorite:

First the support ... Wye Oak.
I misheard them as Wild Oak, but by the end it was Mild Joke. As a geetar and drums two piece you're automatically walking in the shadows of the fabulous 'White Stripes and The Black Keys. Presumably the female vocal is the twist on that theme that's supposed to differentiate. Or maybe it's the drummer who plays keyboard at the same time? Wrong, its the repetitive nature of the 'songs' and the bland vocal.

The trouble with playing drums with your right hand and keyboard with your left is that you're gonna sound like a one handed drummer. And I dont mean Rick Allen. In the same vein, stomping on a fuzz box does not an angry guitar make. Jack Black wont be looking over his shoulder.
Rubbish, get yourselves a band and start all over again.

The main event ... Le Nationale'. Simply fantastic.

The acoustic (no mikes) singalong version of Vanderlyle topped a great night. One of those gigs where you lose all sense of space, place and time - lost in a lemonworld. Emotive, dark groovy songs, both sad and mad, swept through an indoor starlit night. Short stabs of lean cameraderie blending the minutes into hours. They had us transfixed and no one had the drugs (or will) to sort it out.

I've seen the National twice now (inc Coachella '11) at have not heard my fave song live - Mistaken For Strangers. At the end of the show we considered going to the Glasgow gig the following night, but didn't. They played it. boo.

From the newsletter sent out today:

Our friends the Calder Quartet will also be joining us for a few songs in LA, we're very excited. Tickets are still available for all of the shows and this will be the last time we'll visit these cities until there's a new National album.

Glad I got my Hollywood Bowl ticket a while back, it could be quite a while before the next time I get to see them if this is true.

Yeah, my problem is I don't really want to go unless it's in the $50+ seats. It just gets too far from the stage after that. But now i'm grappling with the money issue...at least i wouldn't have to buy drinks there though

I hear ya. I am in the $50 seats but it's interesting. I sat in the back but towards the middle which was a more expensive seat for Rod & Gab. The second show was a cheaper ticket but way off to the side, but like MUCH closer and still great sound and view. I almost wished I had purchased the cheaper tickets for both shows. Supre and a few others were raving about the J1 section seats but for me personally Section D was much better despite the angle. I could see the stage from D without any need of looking at the screens. I guess it's personal preference but in general I would rather be close enough to see the stage and the people on it.

Erk, you can't see the stage/people on it from section J1? I'm in J2. The seat view from the hollywood bowl website makes it look like you'd be able to see.

Oh well, at least I was on the rail for their Coachella show...

You can see with great line of sight (you're right in the middle), but you're pretty far back, thus needing the assistance of the screens.

You can see it...but not very well with the naked eye, especially as the sky is growing darker but you can see the screans very clearly and the sound is good. Section D and E seem like 50 rows closer because there is a walkway in between the sections as well. I'm just going by where I sat for Rodrigo y Gabriela.

Here's the specifics. Night 1 = J1 Row 10 $66.45 dead center but watched the screen because the people on stage were very very small.
Night 2= Section D Row 13 $61.25 Saw and heard everything perfectly, no watching the screen at all.

I did have a much better view of the fireworks on night 1 but outside of that, Section D was much much better.

We parked at a self park next to Dillon's. Watching the early games and leaving the car until after the show $15. Considering walking to the bowl it's 1.3 miles and hoping to get a cab back to Hollywood and Vine post show (that's where Dillon's pub is). Might wander the Blvd in the afternoon.

It was a great show. Crowd sucked. 1 in every 3 people around me was talking through the entirety of Sharon Van Etten and Neko's sets. If you're not going to pay attention to the music for the first two hours, why don't you get dinner somewhere else? About 1 in 5 would also talk through any National song that wasn't off High Violet. People...

That said, I'm not really a fan of St. Vincent but her vocals sounded amazing on these songs. I feel this set topped Coachella, it was just great. And I was really pleased to hear a couple songs from Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers (especially Thirsty).

Show was indeed amazing. I echo the comments overall on the crowd. Especially during Sharon and Neko. Way too much talking. Neko's voice sounded amazing. Nice surprise at seeing T. Bone Burnett on stage with her.

St Vincent! Wow...she looked gorgeous, and sounded even better. The band is such a fine tuned machine at this point. I was very pleasantly surprised at Thirsty, and a few of the other set list changes. Hollywood Bowl is gorgeous setting, and the sound was amazing. Only wish I was closer, and I brought my own beer or wine!
