I have around 8 hours on the Monday after Coachella before I have to hop a plane to San Fran. So what is there to do in Palm Springs for 8 hours?

Stay at hotel with a pool. They usually let you check out and spend the afternoon at the pool.

Gay bars not so much really...the gays are more of a nocturnal creature and tend to scurry during the evening hours.

on a more serious note...the sky tram up to the top of the moment is VERY scenic and I recommend that, you can also take a trip to Joshua Tree park...or go visit the dinosaurs from the Pee Wee Herman movie.

Sky tram seems like the winner so far.

Is there anything really close to the airport? Just to save us catching multiple taxis.

Really close to airport? City Hall, Police station, Boxing Club, Dog park. While the tram is nice, to get there by taxi would be quite expensive. Will you have a car? They also have windmill tours. Oh yeah, and gay bars.

Tram ride is cool.

in 8 hours you could easily get out to Joshua Tree, hike around for a while, and come back, but that's def. more of a car rental thing.

There's also a Living Desert zoo / arboretum thing with desert animals and plants and stuff; If I remember correctly it's one town over in Palm Desert.

there are 4 restaurants within walking distance of the airport that have much better food/value than the airport does... palermos pizza, nicolinos (italian), jetstream deli, and taco asada... just in case you end up at the airport early, hungry, and with some time to kill :2c

How long does the tram ride take? It was recommended to us by a local last year but we never did it.

Theres a good outlet mall if you like shopping. The Nachos at the Blue Coyote are pretty delicious.

Try a nice morning hike, just don't get lost like most out of towners do. I recommend either of the Lykken trails which are right behind the city with some excellent views.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is fun, there isn't much to do once you are at the top other than hiking, they have a gift shop and a restaurant up there. It is usually 30 degrees cooler at the top then at the bottom. The hiking is great though, with some spectacular views of the area. There are other hiking trails in the desert as well.

If you want to hang out by a pool have a few drinks and relax for the day you can go to Rancho Las Palmas - Splashtopia or the Tranquility & Spa Pools (adult only).

You could go to the casinos, there are at least 5 in the area.

You could walk around down town palm springs or palm desert.

There will probably be lots of snow at the top of the tram, so don't plan any long hikes.

Snow?! Awesome, I think we will be jumping on the tram. Anybody know how long it takes to get to the top, chill up there for a bit and come back down?

I snowshoed to the summit of San Jacinto last year on the Wednesday before the festival. There was *lots* of snow.

I think we managed to take the tram up, walk around for 30 minutes, and get back to the airport in about 4 hours a couple years ago.

I have hiked to the summit dozens of times... Live right in front of the mountain... Am looking at the mountain NOW and most of the snow has already melted but who knows -shrugs- I'll keep hope alive because i would prefer mild temps at that time of year rather than the 100's

Was it a heavy snow year then? The temperatures for the festival were cooler, now that you mention it...

check this thread out if you are intersted in hiking around the desert... post #23 is a picture i took at the summit with a nice tall can-o-beer... this year we had some snow earlier but it has been pretty warm out here already (last week it hit the 80's)... looking up at the mountain a lot of the snow has melted... will we get more snow? will it stay that late into the year?

Unfortunately this year I'm not going to get out early, so it is nothing but festival for me.

Ever tried Cactus to Clouds? I'd like to try it one year, but there's a small matter of fitness level getting in the way...
