Just checked out Empire of the Sun for the first time. I really like them but they seem like a blatant MGMT clone, in how they look and sound. Am I missing something here?

I used to prefer MGMT but since Empire have become my favourite

they were also under the alias as Sleepy Jackson worth checking out too

MGMT are probably the worst live band ever. Empire of the Sun have an amazing live show....

No.

Anyone who says they're the same probably just listened to "Walking on a dream".

Empire of the Sun is more like a clone of Fischerspooner.

They're similar, but I think calling them a clone is an overstatement.

I mean, both members Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore have had plenty of projects long before the days of MGMT (ie. early 2000's). I would call them similar but they're no 'clone' per se. Pnau is a good example of how one would think they'd both sound like MGMT...

It's a pretty impressive stage show if you ask me! The costumes, the lights, the theatrics, everything

Saw them in Dec 2009, and i'm sure it has only got better since then...

They are similar, but not a clone, I don't think they would say they are trying to sound like MGMT.

Empire is definitly better than MGMT live, although I will say I've seen MGMT twice now (the first being Coachella last year) and their second show was unquestionably farrr better than the first. But I like MGMT on record better than Empire of the Sun on record.

Fuck no. The two bands' energy levels onstage couldn't be more at odds.

Well, I guess that confirms the "Fischerspooner clone" claim. But also the "MGMT clone". Not helpful.

My 16 year old daughter lufs MGMT. (Seriously) I really enjoy FS. So, I'm hoping you FS people are right!

Empire does look like it will be a great spectacle. I'm just saying the remind me of Fisherspooner's #1 tour.

Empire are definitely more accessible musically because of the success of MGMT tho

you can't argue with that

prefer Empire tho

love both bands tho

it's funny cause when i heard that song on the video, i realized i had categorized it as mgmt a long time ago. they could team up and become mgmtofts megazord. i always hated mgmt, i felt like they were mockin the 60's in their videos. i saw them live last year, still tripping my balls out and loved the show and realized their costumes and things were more of an ode to that generation. i went back to see them 4 months ago at the paradiso and they were great. these guys do sound alright though, i'll have to give them a chance

I think they are similar but different enough. I can't wait to see them. I do think that I like EOTS's fanbase a whole lot more based on personal observation but I like both bands well enough.

I saw both EOTS and MGMT last year at Lollapalooza in August, and saw MGMT a little while after they first released Oracular Spectacular.

I liked a couple songs from OS back in the day, but was very disappointed in their live show. It was truly boring, and sounded like the band didn't care.

I was ready to give them another chance at Lollapalooza last year even though I only liked Flash Delirium from the new album. Disappointed again; they can't help but suck it seems. I left after the first song was over, ran to the other side of the park to see Wolfmother, and was much more content. Almost to the front for Soundgarden right after, just a couple people from front stage. Worth the price of admission alone.

Although I knew only one or two songs from EOTS when I went to see them the day before, I really enjoyed it. The music was good, and they obviously put a lot of thought, care and love into their set and choreography.

Sure, they're a little tacky, but EOTS is a far superior live band. No contest.

All that said, I don't profess to be a good critic; this is just what I saw.

Not a clone at all in my opinion both each have a unique way about them.

Yes...they both have a unigue boredom to each of them.

Saw MGMT a couple of times, and each time they SUCKED! I'll give Empire...a chance, and since I'm not expecting much...who knows! That said MGMT may be the most overrated band of the moment.

EOTS > Underworld & Sasha?

lol, yeah, I'm really gonna go off what Mr. Jose Duran says. I'm sure he would suggest seeing them instead of AF too.

ive seen mgmt a handful of times. the best time being the first when they were exciting to see. these days they seem to be pretty bland. empire of the sun on the other hand is beyond most live acts you will see

Assuming that's an obvious reference to Wayne and The Flaming Lips; I've seen FL a couple times and EOTS once last year, and I don't see how it's even a valid comparison.

If you're saying that both groups rely off flashy visuals for their success, I'll give you partial credit. Flaming Lips have made some legitimately great stuff, and their shows are heavily based on audience interaction/participation. EOTS is largely unproven, but are making an impressive and splashy debut here in the states. No audience interaction though, which is a little disappointing, but understandable considering the amount of choreography used.

To me you should see both bands at least once if you're a fan of live music.
