Say what you will about the genre label ( I don't like it either) but the artists that are affiliated with "chillwave" are all amazing, (ie: Memory tapes, Neon Indian, Toro y moi, Washed out, etc.) Where are they?

I was surprised Neon Indian wasn't on the lineup. Washed Out would have been great too.

Chillwave died pretty quickly. That's not to say there aren't several artists I wouldn't have liked to see. Totally missed the witchhouse bandwagon too.

i would have liked to see Small Black, especially as i've missed their last two San Diego shows. as for witchhouse/drag/whatever White Ring is pretty goddamn great and i'd see Salem just for the trainwreck factor. fucking crackheads.

You know what I'd like to see? A moratorium on the word "amazing".

Prince is "amazing".

Elton John is "amazing".

David Byrne is "amazing".

No chillwave band with an album or two under their belt (if that!) can be "amazing". It takes year and years of experience and proven proficiency to be "amazing". Mmkay?

can we turn this into the "prince is amazing" thread

Delorean is Balearic.

I feel like Phantogram is border-line, or at least semi-similar to the bands mentioned.

Delorean is an Animal Collective cover band.

How about you just upgrade Prince and the rest to "mind blowing" or (dare I say) "epic", "legendary"...leave "amazing" to the rest of em

I'm glad. Neon Indian was terrible at The Echo in LA a couple years back. Washed Out doesn't have enough material to do a full half hour set.

However, Memory Tapes was amazing live.

In any case, Chillwave is a dying genre.

I wasn't aware it was a dying scene, but that makes me happy. It was an awful, awful trend.

are Baths and How To Dress Well considered "chillwave"? (Last time I saw Baths he said he'll probably be playing in 2012)

I think these two artists have pushed the "chillwave" sound to the next level. I mean, a part of the whole chillwave thing is the DIY bedroom sound, right? Because that is definitely represented this year on the lineup: Twin Shadow, Delorean, Phantogram, even Here We Go Magic.

THIS; Louis CK had a great bit about using language like this on his Hilarious special:

Also, there are some publications out there (cough, cough, P4K) trying to make the case that Ariel Pink is the godfather of chillwave, which I find a bit silly.

I think it is silly to say that a certain genre was created by so-and-so. But I think AP was making all that kind of music for almost a decade. If anything he could be considered the Godfather of DIY in the '00s.

I'm not so sure I would lump HTDW, Twin Shadow, or Delorean into chillwave. HTDW is on his own, unique shit, and Twin Shadow is more of an 80s pop revivalist than anything (also, I think someone already mentioned it, but Delorean is more balearic in nature, a al The Tough Alliance, etc.).

the Phantogram record sounds like a highly polished, well-produced studio album to me.

Well, Washed Out sounds highly polished to me. As does Memory Tapes.

I guess what I meant by the DIY in the bedroom sound isn't really about the "sound" as much at is about the way the music is made.

You sound DIY in the bedroom

Well, Washed Out sounds highly polished to me.

It's sort of a stroke of genius that Washed Out's Life of Leisure EP sounds as good as it does considering he recorded the whole thing with mediocre equipment in his parent's basement.

I determine what I call chillwave based on how chilled out the album makes me feel when i listen to it.

Sometimes it's just just "relaxwave" or "comfortwave." It has nothing to with being recorded in a bedroom or a kitchen

pachucasunrise
03-10-2011, 02:23 PM
"Comfortwave" sounds glorious, I think I'll start using that now. Maybe HTDW would be "creepwave"
