View Full Version : A Warm Welcome for PJ

She's been called one of the greatest artists of our time. Not just musicians, but artists. Anyone that listens to her or has seen her will attest to this. We've waited years for her to grace us with her vicious tenderness and the time is upon us. If all else fails, Polly Jean Harvey is going to take her 50 foot Queenie ass and level the Empire Polo Fields.

Buckle your seat belts ladies and gentlemen. This festival just got real.

She's going to take all of us down to the river, drown us, then set us up in table and chairs for tea. After which she'll play her entire discography and none of us will be breathing to enjoy it.

Easily one of my most looked forward to sets of the weekend. I've only started listening to her recently, so I don't really care what she plays. It's all good in my book.

I saw her play it at the "A Man a Woman Walked By" show at the El Ray. Killer.

"Can I tell you a story?"

Yeah basically anything she plays is going to be brilliant. I think my bucket list song though would have to be Long Snake Moan. I will kick everyone's ass if it plays...in a kind loving neighborly way.

Thank you. I just hope that helps some people. I want PJ to have a huge crowd going nuts for her because she deserves it and if she falls in love with the festival she will be back again. Can you imagine her coming around a year Radiohead headlines and Thom Yorke walking out to duet with her?

I agree that it isn't the best on the album, but it's a really gorgeous song and I'm pretty sure they have never performed it live or very minimally. You can't deny that it wouldn't be a gorgeous and unexpected moment at her set.

Agreed! Nice job, thecapsulettes.

God, I love how PJ can sometimes within the same song/video be the vulnerable waif and with a flash of her eyes or swiveling of her hips turn into a bold seductress. Such versatility. Or is it... duality? Whatever. She has "it".

Cant be, I like the song, but I never freaked out over the thing when it was originally released. You know, when you were wondering when you would get a pair of tits after all the other girls in class had already? And when you had no idea she even existed at the time? Definitely. From an actors point of view, it's incredibly important to know how to use your voice. Polly definitely plays characters in her music, and she accomplishes this beautifully by taking them on vocally. Gorgeous singer.

P.S. JamesMills is a fucking idiot. Nobody pay attention to his idiotic quips please.

Yes, definitely a fair way of looking at it. She certainly has a different persona on each album each of which requires a unique type of vocal.

P.S. JamesMills is a fucking idiot. Nobody pay attention to his idiotic quips please.

I'm certainly not qualified to call someone an idiot -- glass house and all. What I will say is, if Mr Mills' (or anyone else's for that matter) first encounter with PJ Harvey's vocals are via the guttural vocals of her earlier works or perhaps the deliberately high pitched; almost squeaky sound of "The Words That Maketh Murder" from Let England Shake, I can see how one might think she has limited range as a vocalist.

I would encourage those of you in that camp to check out my personal favorite PJ Harvey album, Stories From the City Stories From the Sea. I still think it's her unqualified masterpiece. That word gets bandied about far too easily, but I just find the entire thing entrancing. It's certainly her most seductive work, her most emotionally direct and also features her most grounded and sophisticated vocals. Well, if you can listen to vocals like that and think that she can't sing, perhaps we should revisit that question of idiocy.

Anyone else addicted to "The Words That Maketh Murder" (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YRITZ560)? I'm really digging the video version with the live "acoustic" Polly cutting into the recording. I certainly would never rip the mp3 from the video and then upload it to the internet because I enjoyed this particular version so much. That wouldn't be right.
