Everyone who went to the Hollywood Bowl will get their second dose... While I will be getting my cherry popped to a live set with visuals to melt my faceoff. I hope they play "get yourself high" or "chicos groove". Every youtube live set I've seen from them always gets my endorphins elevated. Long live the bros.

Usually if an act is playing a DJ set, it will say "DJ Set" next to their name. GV has always been pretty good about that (Chems and Groove Armada in 09, Mylo in 2006, etc). Chems is live, Sphongle is live.

C'mon guys. You're killing me.

I also cannot believe some of you want this on the Main stage. Blasphemy.

I don't think prior stage selection is a prerequisite for current stage selection.

The only reason I think they would play the main stage is if the screen won't fit in the tent. Otherwise it will be in the tent.

And I hope it is in the tent and that they let Coachella use their screen for the whole weekend. That would be probably be the best stage production yet.

I don't hate the idea of main stage for chems in general (I like the dancing space, and cool air), you'd lose the effect of the lasers, not to mention being surrounded by 50,00 douchebags who didn't bother to move on after KoL.

I'd assume that they already know 1) what stage they are playing; 2) what length of set they are being given, since there is a rumor of having a new live set including different visuals. They will need to know what the environment/space is like as well as their set run time, well in advance, in order to give us something special. :)

Playing for 90 minutes almost certainly puts them in the Sahara (let's face it guys, Kings of Leon are closing the main stage), and there is usually a ~10:00-11:30 slot before the Sahara closing act. Let's stop worrying about whether those times are exactly right and start speculating who will follow them. :)

I remember last year everyone was freaking out if Orbital would conflict with Gorillaz, Jonsi, or Thom Yorke.

Now that they're against KOL no one is freaking out but there are some acts that could split the group. One being I can see The Black Keys being 10-11. Also Cee-Lo and Ms. Hill may get late night sets.

Other than that I don't see many non-Sahara acts that can split the GLOruption group up.

Their DJ set in Torino this year was basically like the Coachella set elongated to three hours. They threw in a few more tracks from Further along with some more gems here and there. They ended with "Hey boy, Hey girl" so that 2manydjs could start with it. Long story short...I came.

Ahhh, those videos reminded me of the Oakland show I caught. they brought it so hard. That venue is so small, and their setup was just MASSIVE and filled the whole place with the craziest sound. And yes, I was rolling pretty hard, as I will be at their Coachella set.

EDIT: and I'm really excited to see a new setlist. The thought of closing with Private Psychedelic Reel is just... too mindblowing.

although the Leave Home / Block Rockin' Beats / The Sunshine Underground encore they did was pretty epic.

Sander Kleinenberg

Bands that have/could play the Sahara on Friday:

Just because there are a handful of acts that *could* feasibly play in the Sahara does not mean that they will. It's evident that the straight up electronic acts will play in the Sahara over acts like !!! and the Klaxons and Moving Units. Last year people thought Passion Pit would be in the Sahara and they were wrong. Of course these bands could play in the Sahara if there weren't enough electronic/dancey acts booked to fill the Sahara, but guess what? There are. And we have it on good authority from Menik that the Chemical Brother's were booked to play against KoL in The Sahara.

I will argue this to the death, and if anyone would like to make monetary bets with me about this manner, please speak up. I never lose bets.

If the set times are set in stone, it is the Sahara. They'd only play main if they were closing I reckon, and them ending at 11:30 isn't enough time for KoL to go on after them so.....yeah.

Sahara - Friday:

Eric Morillo > Sasha > The Chemical Bros. (Live) > Boys Noize (Live?)

or

Eric Morillo > Boys Noize (Live?) > The Chemical Bros. (Live) > Sasha

The Chemical Brothers won't play the main stage, but I will say this. Their set on the main stage at Coachella in 2002 was the best set I have seen them play EVER. Better than when they were the Dust Brothers and toured with Orbital and Underworld, better than their gig at Astoria, better than at the Brixton Academy w/ Prodigy, better than any of their other Coachella performances, better than any of the other dozen or so times I have seen them. The same can be said for the sound on the main stage as well.

Would definitely prefer them on the main or outdoor even. So much better to be getting down under the stars than in the tent. I guess you just haven't experienced it if you believe otherwise.

Chemicals in the Sahara would be better.

They know how to utilize the surround sound and have such epic moments like that bass drop transition at the beginning of escape velocity, or during under the influence. Even outdoors, it sounded like an airplane was landing on the crowd, the bass would build from the back then sweep up to the front, I can only imagine how incredible this would be in a tent with surround sound. Also the screen is not insanely over the top huge. With the amount of people that will most likely be at KoL, the Sahara would be the pristine perfect spot for a chemical indulgence. Almost makes me want to go 3000 miles for this performance alone.

They will definitely close with TPPR, which so so fucking cool.

No, probably not. It would be bad business to book a headliner and giving them a gauranteed set time/length. Chances are the festival would run into issues and have to renegotiate the contract which would lead to either the act dropping out, or paying them more money.

Basically, what this would do would close options for Paul T really early on in the process. Paul T has also said in interviews how long and where they play rarely, if ever, enter the negotiations. Madonna was a notable exception.

this is a really good point. they put tons of work into the physical/visual sensation of their live show. giving them the sahara would allow for all sorts of crazy, indescribable rotating/swooping sound effects. mainstage would be more of a spectacle, but you know their visuals are gonna be off the hook anyway. i think letting them take full advantage of the Sahara's surround sound & lighting systems is the right move.

Old story but still good.

Chemical Brothers stop clowning around

The Chemical Brothers have been forced to tone down the disturbing clown images used during their live shows after complaints from fans.

The creepy clowns with bad teeth and smeared make-up - displayed extensively on giant screens during The Chems' sold out 2008 Auckland show - will only be used sparingly when the British dance duo begin their new world tour in New Zealand in March.

Ed Simons said he and Tom Rowlands had decided to "tone down" the clowns after hearing from fans who didn't like the characters, who sing along to songs like Get Yourself High and Do It Again throughout their live performances.

"The clowns have been toned down a bit," Simons told Stuff.co.nz.

"There's a lot of coulrophobia (fear of clowns) about. People were running (away), especially at the more druggy festivals. They (were) like, 'Oh, that was too much.'

"There are still clowns. They're more friendly this time."

Simons said he and Rowlands - known for creating psychelic-tinged electronica since 1995's debut Exit Planet Dust - were looking forward to returning to New Zealand as it was the perfect place to kick off their world tour.

"New Zealand's been great to us, right back when we played the Big Day Out in 2000. We hadn't been that far from home to play before and it's always good to go back," he said.

"Our tour last time was fantastic ... it's a fantastic place."

The Chems' 2008 tour was a head-spinning mix of the band's thumping electronica and a trippy audio-visual show that included strobes, lasers and giant video backdrops.

Simons said their new tour would have a more "integrated" feel to it.

"The new album was made alongside the visuals (and) it's nice how this works with the older stuff," he said.

"We still rely on volume and bright lights and the crowd. The memorable thing is to experience our music at really high volume and with people losing it, that sense of transcendence, being taken to another place, and the hedonism of it."

Further, their seventh album, has marked a change for the duo, who opted not to include guest vocalists - who infused previous hits like rapper Fatlip on The Salmon Dance and Noel Gallagher on Let Forever Be - in favour of crafting a full length album experience.

Simons said Further had been a freeing album to make.

"Some of our bigger hits haven't had guest vocalists, like Hey Boy, Hey Girl and Star Guitar. I think people who've been with us for a long time have enjoyed an album that's looser.

"I'm really glad you can hear a lot of the synth work in our new music."

Simons said current dance music trends - like the blossoming dubstep scene - had influenced the album, but the duo were always trying to create unique music.

"We're not slaves to any trends but we're pretty up on who's producing what. We want to make music that's authentic to us. If we made music that was copying the sounds of 22-year-old kids we'd sound inauthentic."

The pair still DJ'd gigs separately, but Simons said they were looking forward to touring their new album together.

"That bass drum is still thudding away, and it doesn't show any sign of stopping."

im keeping my fingers crossed for a refreshed setlist when they come around for coachella. the show at the bowl was spectacular but i really hope that having toured their new material pretty extensively they might open up more room in the set for old material and not rehash the same live set. while i loved the stuff from 'further,' it seemed like they frontloaded their set with these tracks (except escape velocity) to get them out of the way and the set realllly picked up after that and got super heavy. hearing those tracks live was cool and all but they could have done more to change them up or integrate them better with the classics. either way this is gonna melt some bodies

I'm not the biggest CB fan in the world, but my wife LOVES them, so we went to that Fox show. I have to admit, they were really good. I wasn't expecting much after seeing their DJ set in 09 (was it 09?). But their "live" show is definitely bad ass for even people that don't much care for this type of music. I'm really hoping there isn't a Black Keys conflict.

It is taking all my willpower to not watch these videos. I want to be completely blown away when I see them, and I'm afraid these videos will ruin the surprise for me...

i agree 100%. i loved seeing their hollywood bowl show back in august without having any clue what their setlist/visuals were gonna be. stay strong though, the chem bros LOVE coachella and i can't wait to see what tricks they have up their sleeve for this one.

Grannock - I am currently watching/listening to your entire EZ recording. Thank you.

There's a recording of this? Link? I remember them suddenly stoping their set and everyone thinking curfew got them. There was literally about an eighth of the crowd left when they started their encore. We ran from the front gates back to the fields ourselves...we were far enough that we saw the lights but couldn't hear the sound. Ridiculous. Ran back like cheetahs at the zoo!

who says the chem bros dj set sucks? I remember when they dropped sunglasses at night (popof remix 1) I went fucking apeshit! Either way I'm sooo fucking stoked for the chem bros live.. Hollywood bowl was epic but ending at 10 was fucking weak. I'm hoping for them to close out the sahara, more production, and hopefully this year's tent will be larger

i too, loved their coachella dj set back in 09. even to the point that I re-created parts of it, so i could listen to their mashups at high volumes (with the bass booming).
I am also trying to stay away from their new tour videos, because I want to have O face the entire set.

i can understand how someone could let their expectations (based on hype surrounding their live show) get in the way of them liking that dj set, but if you really stood in that tent for an 90 minutes and listened to song of the siren, no need, jupiter room+waters of nazareth+staring at the sun, popof, don't stop the rock, saturate and escape velocity, and didn't have a good time... you should probably just stop listening to edm.

Good news is now The Brothers will be closing The Sahara directly against KOL

This honestly is the best time slot they could of had all weekend period. Imagine what a bummer it would have been to have them conflict with any of the other three headliners. Plus, no matter what, there will be at least 25000 people over at the main stage keeping the numbers down a bit for the most anticipated set of the weekend. Can't fucking wait!!

DONT THINK

Someone said on the ChemBros official message board that if they were ever going to record a live DVD, this tour and setlist would be the perfect time for it. I agree 100%. This is the setlist of all setlists. I kinda doubt they will make an official DVD so all the tapers will have to do their best.

I'm buying the new Zoom HD to record the Ultra show, someone hold it down out west ;)

God I hope so!
That topic usually get asked alot, but Ed said somewhere in a interview about recordings that their shows 'should only remain as memories'. Tom disagrees though!

Looks like Ed better change his mind.:)

I still scratch my head about that. I remember buying my copy of Further, only to find out that the Japanese version had that extra track.

I really, really loved them at Hollywood Bowl but I would enjoy their set more if there were more lights on them when they're doing this live. I'd like to see more of what their doing and not just the stage production (which is absolutely titties in it's own right).
