Mumford may take it because they're kinda crappy, but for me it's Sleigh Bells - not b/c they suck but because they played last year (violating what I thought was one of the most basic Coachella/GV booking rules that was only breached for special reasons) and as far as I can tell don't have any new music coming. I have a crush on the chick though, so it's ok.

Maybe it's a make-up to all the people who got screwed in the massive clusterf!ck of Friday last year and missed their set?

This is the most half assed, piss poor, past Chella rehased/regurgitated, Lolla leftovers piece of shit lineup ever. It is truly a dark day for the fans & music lovers that made Goldenvoice's fest what it is today. You've bowed down & sucked the corporate asshole of Billboards top 40 goldenvoice. I expected this from Bonnaroo or some of the other festivals that sold out to coporations but never did I anticipate Chella's lineup to be so bad. You really had me pumped with Lightning Bolt, Tame Impala, Phantogram video confirmations & I was completley elated to hear about PJ Harvey. I was sure this was going to be one of the best years ever but.....Guess you don't need generations X's money anymore. Your target market now is what in the begining you prided yourselves on not catering to (frat boys & highschool kids). But hey the money is great & your in the mainstream more than ever so you gotta adapt right? You've either got major headliners up your sleeves to add or bestowed upon you one of the most epic disappointments in festival history.
Yeah there is like 30 acts I would like to see if I went but why do I wanna put up with the crowds, heat, expense, & every other shitty aspect when I can see most of these acts in a small club play for much longer than 45 minutes for $10-$15 & not have to deal with what I just mentioned.

I may or may not go. I'll wait for other fests to announce their lineups before I decide. There are about 2 handfuls of acts I really want to see but I'm weighing the pros & cons & its definatley not weighing out in favor of going yet. Flame me bash me whatever you want I don't give a shit. You know your all disappointed to some degree but don't want to admit it. I'm actually unable to say what surprised me most. The ordering is kind of fucking with my head. What's classic, though, is once they release the set times, none of it really matters. Remember us last year trying to peg who would play where? (or every year for that matter).

I don't know... I feel like if you just look at the names in alphabetical order the line up looks a lot better.

TomAz
01-19-2011, 01:43 PM
yeah so some of you people have very odd (& wrong) ideas of what criteria are used to determine billing. The fact that a band killed at some show in 2007 does not mean they deserve 2nd line status. The fact that some artist sucks eggs does not mean he doesn't deserve to be a headliner. Actually, on this latter point, the opposite is more likely to be true.

Simply Mumford and Sons were successful in the US in 2010. I believe they were 3rd best selling 'rock' act of 2010 in the US, they pretty much sold out a tour and shifted over 600,000 albums.
Why wouldn't GV give them a big slot?

Exactly. This is the only thing I wanted to respond to in this thread. You'd be surprised how many acts GV asks who are recording an album or hate each other or are having babies or are getting married or are touring on the other side of the world and can not make it to Coachella. As obsessed as we are with this festival, it does not run everybody's lives.

I know they attract a lot of people but WTF.

Kings of Leon headlining Friday night makes perfect sense. They needed to book a less-intense headliner to go up against their biggest Sahara tent headliner - the Chemical Brothers. IMO they booked Kings Of Leon to headline Friday night SPECIFICALLY to have them play at the same time as the Chems so that the hardcore coachella fans wouldn't be as hurtin' off of conflicts.

Jack Johnson vs. Fatboy Slim in 08 was the same deal.

Some people clearly don't understand the point of this thread. This is about poster positioning, not whether or not a band deserves to be on the line up at all.

That said, Steve and Tessa, what you've said is mostly true, but that doesn't absolve the line up of criticism. Furthermore, Goldenvoice books Coachella far enough in advance that it doesn't cancel out the possibility that they can convince bands who might not plan to play live in 2011, to do so.

So I guess for me the biggest WTF is some people I had ASSUMED were playing that aren't, such as Beastie Boys, Neil Young, A Perfect Circle, Justice, and WTF no Perry Ferrell?

I knew one of these days Kings of Leon would infiltrate one of Coachellas headliner spots. After seeing them hit EVERY OTHER FESTIVAL the last two years I knew it wasn't far behind. Looks like I'm parking on the Sahara Fri night.

I don't the Strokes sharing a line with Kanye. One is headliner one is the lead-in. Maybe they're getting equal set times.

Wire being billed that low is practically embarrassing.

Animal Collective being the 2nd highest act is kinda funny too.

These were my two biggest jaw drops, along with Mumford. Saturday is just weirdly billed all around. I think if The Strokes were on Sat instead of Sun, it wouldn't look so bizarre.

KOL is a bit odd to me as well, it was well documented in a number of pollstar articles how they were having trouble filling amphitheaters simply due to how much they tour. They have headlined every single major US festival in the past 2 years.

I am not arguing that they are not headliners, but the timing seems to be off.

Sleigh Bells are nice on albums but live they are a fucking godawful trainwreck. The only thing that makes this band even remotely un-awful is, as another poster mentioned, the fact that the chick is a fucking sexpot.

As someone else already pointed out, I really don't see why the Strokes are sharing a line with Kanye. I mean, whether or not I like the Strokes, or Lady Gaga, or whoever, from a business standpoint, Kanye doesnt need anyone on the line next to him. Period.
& Yes Robyn in that upper line WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!

Kings of Leon - Coldplay, Jack Johnson, Muse, The Killers of years past.
Arcade Fire - Way overrated
Duran Duran...I think that they should have been the Saturday headliner. And Arcade Fire would be a nice second bill.

Arcade Fire are definitely headliner material. They're relevant, talented, and had a #1 album only a few months ago. They will play "Wake Up" and have 70k people singing along, and it will be a resplendent moment, whether you like it or not.

And I'm a guy who saw Soundgarden over Arcade Fire at Lolla in August. (And didn't regret that... you have to have favorites, and SG is one of mine)

But Duran Duran has a lot of big hits and a very solid sound.... heck, I remember people complaining about D2 being on contest posters. Ha! Take that!

Hopefully Duran Duran will get 1:25 and have that giant wave from "The Reflex" video to wash over us before Arcade Fire brings it in.

I just realized that "whether you like it or not" sounds awfully snarky. Not intended that way, just saying that it will be a memorable Coachella moment.

As for Gogol Bordello hate - they're fun. That's about it. You will sing along with "Start Wearing Purple" despite being annoyed by how repetitive their act it.

I would have loved to see Balkan Beat Box on the lineup as well... or instead of GB. They're a lot of fun, and they had to cancel their last L.A. show due to an injury. BBB killed at Lollapalooza and Bumbershoot, as well.

Are you kidding? People don't even read newspapers at all anymore. I had a stack of three Sunday L.A. Times still in plastic when my wife tossed 'em all.

I edit a website and it's really for mistakes to get through, but this is more op-ed than anything else... "some folks are angry, so the fest is finished!"

The top of the lineup is definitely weaker than expected, you can't go from the Rolling Stones and Daft Punk to Kings of Leon without people noticing, and the second line acts are mostly very questionable. We just have to hope there are some late adds and that we fall in love with some other bands... and also that GV doesn't screw us with conflicts and stupidly short set times. If Mumford and Suns gets 85 minutes and the Kills gets 50 minutes, the strength of the undercard argument loses some validity.

You know, at first I always thought Mumford & Sons at the second line was a bit ridiculous until I opened up iTunes today and looked at the top selling albums right now and "Sigh No More" is STILL in the top 10, even after being released last February. That's fucking crazy. Coming from somebody who absolutely loved that album, I'm still surprised that album is still selling so damn well so now I guess their billing is a bit justified. It's the oldest album in the top 20 (beside Journey, ick) on iTunes.

Not that AC doesn't deserve to be billed higher than Mumford & Sons. I am just saying I was surprised.

Totally serious. I still haven't bothered to look into them, so still no clue.

And yeah, that Animal Collective billing is a huge headscratcher. Weren't they playing to a half-empty Mojave last time they played Coachella (maybe who was playing on other stages could have had some factor in that)? I didn't think they got that much bigger since then.

They played against Kraftwerk/Portishead. Big reason. Also, they played in 08... they exploded after Merriweather Post Pavilion came out in 09 though. I am not surprised to see them on the second line, but I am surprised to see them as the main sub.

And people have verying opinions on Mumford and Sons. I am going to sound super elitest here, but I started listening to them before they before they were all over the radio and I quite enjoy them. I discovered them through the Sasquatch line up last year. Their set at Sasquatch was pretty damn great too. I am definately going to try and see them at Coachella.

does anyone that posts on this thing ever like the current coachella lineup? maybe it takes a few years to be cool.

Oh wow. You were very, very, very x20 wrong in that thinking.

Ah I thought Merriweather was out when they played. My mistake. I still think 2nd act seems a little high with that in mind. I can agree 2nd line or first on the third line would be a proper fit.

I am stoked to see them but OFF! just seems a little out of place.

I'm all for legit hardcore bands but I have a feeling the crowd reception will be wack.
