Three acts with the hottest recordings of 2010 will headline the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, it was announced Tuesday night.

Arcade Fire, Kanye West and Kings of Leon will top the bill at this year's Coachella fest, which has won more awards than any other festival in the world from the industry publication, Pollstar.

The event runs April 15-17 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio.

The festival, founded in 1999 by the Los Angeles-based Goldenvoice company, is known for its mix of cutting- edge indie rock, hip-hop and electronica music, and the appearance of music legends from the 1980s and earlier.

This year's legendary band is Duran Duran, but the lineup has a greater emphasis on more contemporary acts including Cee-Lo Green, The Black Keys, Caifanes and Freelance Whales.

All three headliners are returning after previous successes at Coachella. They now bring with them critically acclaimed CDs.

“The Suburbs” by Arcade Fire, and “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” by West landed on most critics' top 10 lists for 2010 and Kings of Leon's “Come Around Sundown” remains popular.

Some of the other top acts from past years include Animal Collective, Bright Eyes, Cold War Kids, Cut Copy, Daedelus, Flogging Molly, Gogol Bordello, Interpol, Klaxons, Damian Marley and Nas, Ozomatli, PJ Harvey, Sasha, Scissor Sisters, The Chemical Brothers, The Kills, The New Pornographers, and The Strokes.

The lineup also includes platinum- selling artists Ms. Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, and a popular DJ from the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs, Alf Alpha.

Festival promoter Paul Tollett was unavailable for comment Tuesday night, but he said late last year he wanted to include some desert acts, including Alf Alpha.

Music is traditionally the centerpiece of Coachella, but Goldenvoice officials said this year's festival will feature an expanded commitment to “art, culture and community” via a partnership with The Creators Project, a global initiative supporting leading and emerging artists.

Launched in 2010 by Intel Corporation and Vice to identify artists who are “pushing creative boundaries through technology,” The Creators Project will debut at Coachella with a collaboration of headlining acts and art installations on the grounds.

Expanded venue

Coachella will play out on a larger field this year with the lease of land from Eldorado Polo Club just west of Empire, and onsite campgrounds will include such features as a farmers market, a 24-hour general store, a roller skating rink and free shuttle service to a local grocery store.

Three-day weekend passes, along with camping passes for Coachella go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday through Ticketmaster.com, by phone at (800) 745-3000 and at www.coachella.com.

Three-day weekend passes are $269, plus surcharges, and camping passes are $75.

More details on layaway, camping options and up-to-the minute information, can be found at www.coachella.com.
