every other band on the lineup pales in comparison to what this band did on their first 3 records. i hope you go deaf if you think different

Too bad you'll be lucky if they play so much as one song from any of those records during their entire tour.

Wire is one of only a handfull of bands on the lineup where I am OMFG excited.

lookin at the bands you are excited to see in your sig, I think you might not be too fond of Wire. I'm not taking a slam at your taste. But it is different than wire.

both Wire & The Fall have been ripped off by many past bands that have played Coachella. Great to finally see one of them on the lineup.

I love Wire, but they were pretty average when I saw them last week.

It was the same thing when I saw them in 2008. I'd probably be a lot more excited if I didn't already know what to go in expecting.

I like Wire best from about 1985 to 1990 era, after the Pink Flag period. The "Eardrum Buzz" video features Steve Martin in a cameo.

I look forward to this set!

You are not the only one. I hope a lot of younger attendees will discover Wire. I reckon most of their fan base is over age thirty.

Anyone remember when the drummer of WIRE left the band and they changed their name (briefly) to WIR?

yes I remember that and also when Graham Lewis did his solo project "He Said"

I also enjoy those B.C. Gilbert records "DOME 1,2,3" + his The The involvement

basically Newman, Lewis & Gilbert are full of awesomeness!!

You just reminded me of how it sucks that The The has never played Coachella. As for WIRE (not Wire), can someone put on the video with WIRE and Steve Martin?

Do they really not play any songs from the first 3 albums anymore? Those are the only Wire records I know...

I would really love to see them... Pink Flag is especially *amazing* (a lot of these songs are my all-time most played in iTunes, and that's.. definitely saying something, haha. Also a lot of the songs are short so you can just listen to them over and over and over...) This will give me an excuse to delve further into their newer stuff...

They should've gotten a higher billing for sure

The Clash is the only that matters. Mick Jones from the Clash is in Big Audio Dynamite. They're playing this weekend. So I think they matter, too.

But, yeah, I'll also be at Wire.

Just started my Wire research and "A Touching Display" is an AMAZING song. Can I expect that live or nah?

SoulDischarge
03-30-2011, 11:11 PM
Nope. They've been playing the same setlist for all their shows. It's mostly newer stuff. There's only 3 songs from the first phase of their existence, aka the stuff that really matters (not that their new stuff is bad, but it's not amongst the best albums ever released like their first three).

Comet
Smash
Advantage In Height
Please Take
Silk Skin Paws
Kidney Bingos
Clay
Bad Worn Thing
Moreover
Two People in a Room
106 Beats That
Boiling Boy
Red Barked Trees

Encore:
Down to This
Drill
Underwater Experiences

Encore 2:
Adapt
Pink Flag

Also, this one has lodged itself in my subconscious once again. They were such a great pop band, amongst everything else.

What album should I start with for Wire?

154. Even if they don't play anything from that album the later stuff is more like 154 than Pink Flag. If you only heard Pink Flag you will have no idea what to expect at Coachella.

They played Fallon last night, and even did "Map Ref 41N 93W" after the show: http://pitchfork.com/news/42126-video-wire-hit-late-night-with-jimmy-fallon/

I really like the first few Wire albums but I am not a fan of the new stuff, so I will most likely be skipping their set.

They've recently added "map ref. 41n 93w" to their set list, and we'll also get "Kidney Bingos" for sure. I love the new album, and I have a feeling this will be a great set.

I thought they were pretty underwhelming tonight. The first half of the show was pretty dull and Colin Newman just seemed bored. They mostly sounded like kind of a generic jangle pop band. The four songs they played from the first three albums ("Map Ref," "Two People In A Room," "106 Beats That" and "Pink Flag") felt kind of flat, lacking a lot of the nuance and texture that made those songs great on record. There was a five song string that was really fucking good though, from "Boiling Boy" to the end of the first encore on the set list above. Everything else, though, was pretty forgettable. If you're a die hard, I can understand needing to see them, I had to, but if it comes down to a crucial conflict, I wouldn't be too upset about missing their set (or at least the first half hour).

I know we won't get it but I always loved 'Ahead'. Pretty stoked to see them again after all these years (last saw them in 1989)
