Every year there has been a headliner/subheadliner who was like, 'aw FUCK YEAH!" whether it be prince, roger waters, daft punk, thom yorke, RATM... but this year i'm sadly disappointed...

don't get me wrong, i'm excited for animal collective, PJ harvey, broken social scene, ratatat, death from above 1979 plus more and a bunch of random EDM, but there's no big BANG that i'm super excited for as far as headliners go... I guess arcade fire, but i'm pretty much over them. I really hope they add someone big like they did last time when they announced Prince..

for the record... F kings of leon

actually, lineup needs a better lineup

the lineup doesn't suck, it just doesn't WOW me like it usually does...

that won't stop me from going cuz it's never about the headliners.. i thought 2010 headliners sucked, but still had a blast... I just wish there are something epic like at the drive in reunion!

I admit K.O.L are weak, but if you guys didn't bitch about Muse last year why bitch about K.O.L....Fucking Muse bro?...

Kings of Leon are chill, but like most of you said its nothing to leave us speechless like prince, portishead, maccartney etcccccc.

Muse is pretty intense.

Granted, the headliners are weak... But how does anyone see that undercard and say it is a bad lineup!?

NO PRESSURE TO MAKE A GREAT lineup.. when you got fools paying for all three days already and selling out.

Im telling you as ive said before the line ups seemed better with two days and when you have 99 dollar one day tickets.
BUT NO MORE

KOL isn't even in Muse's ballpark

I just don't want to go home with my last vision of Coachella for an entire year being Kanye West.
The Strokes would do it for me, but they're #2.
But KOL are a great band, just their last 2.5 albums have kind of sucked.
Arcade Fire are amazing, but I've already seen them twice at Coachella.

Headliners are good, I can't complain, just nothing to write home to mom about.
But the undercard is where it's at this year.

Last year's undercard was one of the best Coachella has ever had so I don't have any clue why you would think that proves your point.

I can see the whole thing with KoL, it's pretty weak, but dat undercard, good lawd, surprises everywhere, I fuggin love it.

and Muse >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> KoL, that's not even a discussion.

This year its all about the undercard (Suede, PJ Harvey, Interpol, the Presets, etc etc). Headlines are kind of ass - Arcade Fire is meh, KOL is garbage (but really the same quality as the Killers in 09). There is no WOW headliner - Paul McCartney, Jay Z, Roger Waters, but there are more than enough bands on the undercard.

I got nothing against Kings of Leon, but I never thought they were big enough to headline this thing. I would put them in the same tier as Neon Trees.

Hope they surprise us with a real headliner later.

I'd agree. KoL, Arcade Fire, and Kanye don't stand up as well against Jay Z, Muse, Gorillaz. Luckily Sunday The Strokes also headline, so that makes it alot better.

But the subheadliners kick ass! Black Keys, Interpol, Chemical Brothers, Animal Collective, Mumford & Sons, Bright Eyes, The National, Death from Above 1979.

It's gonna be fun!

This is the second KoL/Muse comparison I've seen, and it's freaking mind-boggling.

If you're saying they're both KROQ-friendly and overexposed, sure, maybe... but Muse puts on an amazing show and has some really interesting music. KoL.... uh, doesn't.

This.

Not excited for Kings of Leon, but they've put the Chemical Brothers and Sasha the same day. So it's all good.

Shouldn't complain about headliners. i like them too but I saw Fatboy Slim during Jack Johnson. it's like he was never there.

Arcade Fire and K. West I will see for sure.

When I saw Muse on the lineup last year, I thought HOLY SHIT ITS GOING TO BE AN EPIC SHOW!

When I saw KoL on the lineup last night, I thought, eh at least their new album is better than the last.

Not much of a comparison.

On one hand its just a headliner, if you dont wanna see em then dont. On the other getting KoL is just kind of a big fuck you to everyone. They could taken one of the names below and just swapped it with KoL and it wouldnt be as bad, but its as if GV is mocking us.

are people really saying Gorillaz are better than Arcade Fire in this thread?

tigermilkboy
01-19-2011, 08:08 AM
You can only get the headliners who are available and want to play. I am sure GV didn't forget to ask Daft Punk, Radiohead, Bowie etc. Either the money was not tempting enough or the time wasn't right.

I don't think its so much a discussion of which is better as it is that Gorillaz had more of a wow factor. It was their first big show in 4 years. Was pretty left field.

This is true, but in retrospect, Gorillaz shouldn't have headlined at all, let alone close the festival.

I dunno. KoL are what they are.
Arcade Fire are one of the best live acts in the world and Kanye's music frankly always meant more to me than JayZ did.

Muse are pretty boring, Jay Z was cool but again is less interesting to me than Kanye, and Gorillaz were boring to me (and a lot of other people)

So all in all this is a net improvement on last year's headers. For me anyway.

Yeah, but I feel that if they had played the show how they did on their tour last fall, people would have been praising the show way more. You could just tell that they weren't completely ready to play to their fullest just yet.

I do think that the Gorillaz music and popularity totally warrants a headlining spot though.

In defense to Gorillaz set last year: not enough time, not all performers were there due to volcano eruption, terrible logistics by GV for transition from Atoms/Yorke and these factors made Damon a sour Brit.

I got to see them @ the Gibson in LA and they killled it, I had a blast and the crowd felt the full vibe.

At least no REM on Sunday. Imagine hearing "everybody hurts" at the End of coachella, it would be the last one for many.

MUSE boring??? WTF is wrong with ya'll?

K.O.L are the weakest link - GOODBYE!

I definitely agree they need to add some bangers to the headliner list.

And for the record, Gorillaz last year wasn't worth the headliner spot either (ducks down and runs)....

I wouldn't say that the headliners are bad, but they're definitely missing zest and rarity. Usually there is a headliner that leaves you starstruck to see: knowing that you will either probably not be able to see them again or you'll have to pay a Coachella-sized ticket to do so. GV is going after the model that sold out last year with all contemporary names within similar genre. Although all three of them have been Grammy-relevant within the last three years, I almost see this selection as a downgrade from their respective 2010 selections. From Jay-Z down to Kanye. From Muse down to KoL. I personally prefer Arcade Fire over Gorillaz, but Gorillaz has the rarity and singles factor far above that of AF.

Last year, I'd say Jay-Z was a "big get" act. You could say the same for Gorillaz, but it's arguable. The year before was Paul McCartney. The year before it was Roger Waters (and eventually Prince), then Rage/Bjork and so on. There really isn't one this year. All of these acts have played Coachella before as a non-headliner (within like five years, too). Is Kanye really gonna be the biggest name on the 2011 Coachella bill?

It's probably because they don't have 10 people in their band running around on stage acting retarded. So I guess they would be boring to people with no attention span.

I tend to agree with the analysis that among headliner-worthy rappers, Jay-Z > Kanye, and that among headliner-worthy modern rock bands, Muse > Kings of Leon. But I don't see the booking of either Kanye or the Kings as a downgrade over last year so much as I see it as an attempt to repeat a winning* formula.

* Financially speaking of course. Winning in terms of selling tickets, not in terms of what all of us would most like to see out of the headliners, or in terms of what would avoid clusterfucks.

as much as I dislike (light word) kings of leon.. the point of this thread isn't to bash them. I'd much rather have kol than say jack johnson... in all honesty, last years headliners were WEAK. But instead of jayz, I saw fever ray/deadmau5. Instead of muse I saw flying lotus, and as for gorillaz we left after a couple songs cuz thom yorke was a much better way to close out the fest

The point is that every year there's always SOMETHING outta left field. Last year we got thom yorke with flea and gorillaz' first show in forever, the year before we got paul mccartney and leonard cohen, I could go on.... but the fact of the matter is this year there's no one special like that. Sure ill be watching chem bros instead of kol or PJ harvey (hopefully) instead of kanye... but I just wish on sat they could add someone that'll blow our minds... even if it was someone old and outdated. Surely im not the ONLY one that feels this way......

You're acting like there are no mind-blowing non-headliner acts this year (since you're citing non-headliner acts from past years as examples). DFA 1979 comes to mind.

A point worth considering is that it may less be Coachella going all-in on contemporary popular acts, and more that 10+ years into the festival, the nostalgia/reunion vein is pretty well tapped at this point. Who's out there at this point waiting for Coachella to reunite them? The Smiths, Talking Heads, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc. aren't happening.

No compelling reason to send over $1,000.00 for the weekend...

For some reason I think $5-7 million dollars is missing from this years lineup than recent years.

The 2008 lineup before Prince is better than this.
