I know she got a bad reputation for performing late and sometimes not delivering as well for the past few years. But is anyone really excited to see her? Crazy or not, she's a legend, and I'm kind of really thrilled about this.

Will definitely watch her if she doesn't conflict with one of my few Friday favorites. But research will tell if the number of acts I'm excited about stay as low for Friday.

Annual? Winehouse didn't go to coachella because her visa was denied a few weeks before. It wasn't a shit show cause it wasn't a show at all. M.I.A took her spot

I was disappointed when she had to pull out and there was the big question mark of who would replace her. I just hope that if there's going to be another token unreliable performer this year it's not Lauryn Hill.

She will be the Sly of 2011, except if/when she does arrive it will probably be a good performance. They should book her as the last act in Gobi at like 11pm so she has plenty of time to make it to the stage. (assuming Fri and Sat end at 1am again this year)

She has voiced her disdain for white folks many times. She does provide explanations for her attitude.

While her actions and statements are certainly suspect she is an amazing lyricist and has done wonders for the industry and I think worthy of Coachella.

I don't know why people are thinking that her show is going to be another midlife crisis for her.

You do realise she has been touring since the whole MTV Unplugged thing, she's been playing great shows all around the world for the past 12 months.

She'll be fine at Coachella, actually she'll be amazing at Coachella.

Yes!

I heard from message boards on an underground/alternative hip-hop site that she re-worked most of her song, almost to the point where they aren't recognizable- so it'll be interesting to hear them like that. Reviews for her recent shows have also been good, saying that she had a strong performance. So hopefully she'll turn the party out.

Ever since the Fugees I've been a L. Boogie fan & was all about the miseducation. I was absolutely fucking pumped when I saw "Lauryn Hill" on the RTB flier that I decided to purchase my ticket based upon my excitement.

I watched & enjoyed a lot of acts, but she was my main purpose in going. When she finally started I was vibe'n that shit hard. 10 minutes into it I felt let down beyond belief. I walked away & didn't finish watching her. It fucking sucked so hard. No part of her performance that night was anything like any of the music I had ever heard. I'm probably gonna give her a 2nd chance at Coachella but if its anything like RTB I'm done with her.

I waited in line for about 3 hours in Vegas. She came for the sound-check but did not stick around for all of us that waited in line. Then in NY recently she made people wait 4 hours and told them "she is worth the wait". Her voice is not what it used to be. She is one hot mess and Coachella should avoid her at all costs. She should also be thanking white people for buying her first record and apologizing to black people for acting a fool.

Lauryn Hill's fans "stomped out" from her Atlanta concert

Source: (CNS) Reporter: Anne Lu
Location: Atlanta, GA, United States Published: January 18, 2011 07:34 am EST
Topics: Arts, Culture And Entertainment, Music

Lauryn Hill made her fans "stomped out" of her Atlanta concert Friday. When the 35-year-old ex-Fugees singer showed up three hours late to the sold-out event and "confused" and "underwhelmed" her audience, some of them had enough of her behavior and left the show early.
clearpxl

Aside from arriving late, Hill apparently declared that she was tired of "playing the same music night after night" during the concert at the Center Stage in Atlanta so she performed remixes of some of her classics while urging her fans to participate.

However, "Nobody could participate because NOBODY knew the music!" a concertgoer told entertainment blog Sandrose, via theboombox.com. "Everybody was looking around like 'WHAT SONG IS THIS????[sic]"

The fans were further infuriated when instead of hearing her sing, the music from the band actually drowned out the multiple Grammy winner's vocals.

According to theboombox.com, some of the fans had had enough with her antics. They reportedly booed her before leaving the venue early.

The source said, "They didn't walk out – they stomped out!"

Hill was also three hours late at her concert at The Pageant Concert Nightclub in St. Louis on Sunday.

Very excited to see her finally. With all the negatives said about recent performances, I am optimistic that she is going to bring her voice that day. I would lose it if it somehow became a part acoustic set where she played a lot from the live double cd. Not realistic, but I am atleast hoping she doesnt go screamo like RTB. "Oh Jerusalem", "Mystery of Iniquity", "I Find it Hard to Say(Rebel)" all done slowly, would amaze people i think.

With the negative ways her audiences are reacting toward her (booing, etc) and her comments about already being tired of playing the same stuff every night, I would be very surprised if she's still on the poster come April. She already seems ready to call this tour quits.

I say that with sadness because I'd love to see her, but I'm pretty sure she'll either drop off the poster early or possibly even worse for us, come on really late/fuck up set times of others, etc.

travelfan
01-23-2011, 12:07 PM
I am so torn on this, because on one hand a Lauryn Hill set where she is on top of her game would be just about the sickest thing all weekend. However, I've heard so much negativity about her recent performances before I even stepped on this board.

Generally what I've heard is that she's sped up and "remixed" a lot of her songs, and that the first 2/3 of her set is terrible. She apparently gives the last few songs (Ex-Factor, Doo Wop, Fugees hits) a solid rendition at the very end. So I may try to make my way over for the end of her set, but like as others said it's almost an impossibility that she will start anything close to her set time.

On paper she looks amazing for Coachella, but I'm afraid in reality it will be a shitshow (and not even one with comedic value like Sly Stone).

Not only is she a brilliant lyricist with a beautiful and powerful voice, she's often misunderstood. People like to dismiss her as a crazy bitch which is not only insensitive and misogynistic but an easy cop out for needing to put a label on someone. She's an artist and a strong rebel of a woman.

I loved reading about how in 2003 when performing at the Vatican she called them out. Why is it only strong women are able to do this and are often dismissed as crazy or in this case they say she acted in poor taste. How dare they judge her after the atrocities that were committed under their watchful eye..

I am sorry if I am about to offend some of you. I did not accept my invitation to celebrate with you the birth of Christ. Instead I ask you why you are not in mourning for him in this place? I want to ask you, what have you got to say about the lives you have broken? What about the families who were expecting God and instead were cheated by the Devil? Who feels sorry for them, the men, women and children damaged psychologically, emotionally and mentally by the sexual perversions and abuse carried out by the people they believed in? Holy God is a witness to the corruption of your leadership, of the exploitation and abuses which are the minimum that can be said for the clergy. There is no acceptable excuse to defend the church."

anyway, I hope she is focused and can pull off something special at Coachella.

I am thrilled at the opportunity to see her perform..a friend of mine saw her in Toronto recently and they did lay out expectations that she wouldn't hit the stage til Midnight.. but if any of those kind of antics keep me from seeing another act that's high on my list I may walk away simply on principle.

Tell us your story blueduck. What did she do that was racist? So far you are just calling her a racist and a bitch. How about you use your intelligence and give us your personal story of why you feel so strongly about her. It would carry a bit more weight and possibly give you some more credibility.

I was working undercover security at rock the bells a few years back. My roll was to make the artists feel more accommodated. My boss explained to me and the other white folks working that we were not allowed to look at Miss Hill in the eyes and we were not allowed to be with in 30 ft of her at all times. After the show one of my co workers emailed me a copy of Miss Hills contract with RTB and it clearly states: No White People allowed with in 30 feet of myself and my team.

I've seen Miss Badu twice now and she just doesn't do it for me and for the record she was late by 20-30 minutes both times. I'm in the minority on this one but I could care less if an artist starts on time usually. As long as they are on when they hit the stage i'm happy. I prefer Lauryn's voice and lyrics to Erykah.

I just saw her play this past Saturday here in Portland. It was awesome. She played a great set; pretty much most every song I wanted to hear her preform. Her voice is still spectacular and she can still flow like crazy.

Also, she wasn't late or anything like that. Played for a while too, about an hour and a half. It was very satisfying.

THAT IS FUCKING FANTASTIC!

I'm confident she has her shit together for this performance. I just hope she doesn't conflict with the Chemical Brothers or some other must see shit but she's pretty high on my list. Notice the press doesn't report on her great performances, they focus on the controversy of course.

Setlist:
01. (Unknown)
02. Everything Is Everything
03. Sweetest Thing
04. Lost Ones
05. When It Hurts So Bad
06. Superstar
07. To Zion
08. Ex-Factor
09. Get Up, Stand Up/Is This Love (Bob Marley)
10. How Many Mics (The Fugees)
11. I Only Have Eyes For You (The Flamingos)
12. Zealots (The Fugees)
13. Fu-Gee-La (The Fugees)
14. Ready Or Not (The Fugees)
15. Killing Me Softly (Frankie Valli)
—————————————————–
16. Turn Your Lights Down Low
17. Doo Wop (That Thing)

Known for hitting the stage late, sometimes well past midnight, Hill bucked the trend and was poised behind the mic by 11:30 p.m. Sure, she spent a few minutes sound-checking; hell, she even “complained” about the lighting a few times. But what her fans ultimately witnessed once she got started was an artist finding her footing once again.

Top 5 set for me. Loved it.

Yeah her set was amazing and I had no intentions of seeing her going into the weekend. We were watching her as we left the beer gardens and decided to stop and relax for a few minutes. A few minutes turned into the rest of her set. We couldn't leave.

Virrago
04-19-2011, 12:34 PM
Wait, were we watching the same thing? Because here's what I saw:

1-about 25 minutes late in a 50 minute slot
2-band played some random mixes without her (Aerosmith?)
3-Lauren Hill comes out and complains that her mic isn't loud enough and repeatedly asks for them to turn it up
4-Lauren Hill acts surprised that turning it up turning it up turning it up resulted in feedback, won't sing until they fix it
5-20 to 30 minutes of good singing

Despite all that, her voice sounded amazing. I'm still glad I got to see her do some of the songs I loved in high school. But one of the best acts of the weekend? Absolutely not.

Closer to 15 and it had more to do with Cee Lo running late and his clusterfuck of a set.

It's called making an entrance, it's fairly common, everyone from Prince to Erykah Badu does this.

3-Lauren Hill comes out and complains that her mic isn't loud enough and repeatedly asks for them to turn it up

An artist asking to have her mic turned up doesn't ruin a set for me.

4-Lauren Hill acts surprised that turning it up turning it up turning it up resulted in feedback, won't sing until they fix it

Which took a grand total of what? 20 seconds?

thank you. people kept saying she "sounded great" and i had to wonder which set they were watching.

i enjoyed the set, but her voice definitely wasn't up to par. but she did better than i feared, not quite as good as i'd hoped.

and i hate that remix of lost ones. the original beat is soooooooooo much better. why ruin a perfectly danceable song?

my favourite part was when she did a few bars of "i'll fly away" though; that was great :)

Singer Lauryn Hill sentenced to prison on tax charges
By Alan Duke, CNN
updated 6:40 PM EDT, Mon May 6, 2013

(CNN) -- Singer Lauryn Hill's failure to pay federal income taxes for three years has earned her a three-month prison sentence.

Hill pleaded guilty last year to three counts of failing to file tax returns on more than $1.8 million between 2005 and 2007.

The Grammy-winning artist appeared Monday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo in federal court in Newark, New Jersey, for sentencing.

Hill must also pay penalties and taxes still owed, a $60,000 fine, serve a year on probation and possibly three months of home confinement.

She must report to prison on July 8, unless her lawyer files an appeal of the sentence.

The income in question was mostly from music and film royalties paid to companies she owned between 2005 and 2008, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

"Although Hill pleaded guilty to charges specifically related to those tax years, her sentence also takes into account additional income and tax losses for 2008 and 2009 -- when she also failed to file federal returns -- along with her outstanding tax liability to the state of New Jersey, for a total income of approximately $2.3 million and total tax loss of approximately $1,006,517," the prosecutor said.

Hill's lawyer, Nathan Hochman, told CNN before the sentencing that, "Ms. Hill has not only now fully paid prior to sentencing her taxes which are part of her criminal restitution, but she has additionally fully paid her federal and state personal taxes for the entire period under examination through 2009."

Hill revealed in a message posted to her Tumblr account last month that she's been working on new music.

"It has been reported that I signed a new record deal, and that I did this to pay taxes. Yes, I have recently entered into an agreement with Sony Worldwide Entertainment, to launch a new label, on which my new music will be released," Hill wrote. "And yes, I am working on new music."

Her fans have been waiting for new music from here since her 1998 solo album, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill."
