Small fonts and listing quite low from the headliners doesn't equal a sub par performance.

I won't say anymore, as a high post count in this thread may increase the idiot factor in the tent.

I've been a fan of elbow ever since Asleep in the Back but it's been so long I had almost forgotten about them in a way. A great find in the lineup...were they moved from Sunday to Saturday or did I just imagine that? I'm glad they're on Saturday now. This song was one of my favorite epics back in the day:

Is there new material I should be checking? Last album I have is Cast of Thousands. There's been two releases since then:

Leaders of the Free World (http://www.amazon.com/Leaders-Free-World-Reis-Elbow/dp/B0007Y88M6/ref=pd_bxgy_m_img_b)

The Seldom Seen Kid (http://www.amazon.com/Seldom-Seen-Kid-Elbow/dp/B0015I2P0Y)

While both are good, SSK is spectacular, IMO.

I have tried to like Elbow. Many people whose taste I respect are really into them.

Every attempt has been a total failure though. I just find their music dull and pretentious. Somewhere between early Genesis at its most pompous and Coldplay at its most inane.

I'll try again though. Point me to the one album where their genius cannot be denied even by me.

I had been meaning to start listening to Elbow for a few years, and somehow they kept slipping through the cracks. I listened to The Seldom Seen Kid a few weeks ago. It may have been one of the better albums I've ever heard, upon first listen. After some quality listening time, I really like all of their albums and I think they are actually just getting better. This is quickly turning into one of my favorite bands. They're up there with Arcade Fire as the act I'm most looking forward to on Saturday.

I absolutely can't wait to finally see these guys. I suppose it's too much to hope for a sunset Outdoor Theater set, given their somewhat low billing?

Elbow was a band that I knew had some tracks I liked. I had a few of their songs rated highly in iTunes. Then one day I obsessed over "Fallen Angel". The chorus is just catchy as hell, at least to me. I played that song to near death. After that they went from a band that came up on shuffle to a band I intentionally put on.

I prefer the album, 'A Cast Of Thousands' but 'Seldom Seen Kid' is great too.

Elbow was on my list until they were scheduled against the New Pornographers. I've watched plenty of youtube of each and it's still a toss-up, but leaning towards TNP, partially because with the exception of a couple Glasto vids, Elbow may be a little too mellow.

Can someone please convince me otherwise?

How often does Elbow tour the states?

I'm really struggling with the Elbow/Bright Eyes conundrum. I want to see Bright Eyes a bit more, and it's their last tour, but I'll have a great spot for Elbow, who are also one of my top-5 for the weekend. I could catch the first 20 minutes and head over, but I'd probably miss Grounds For Divorce and One Day Like This.

If I knew they'd come back this year, it'd leave me much more at peace with whatever I do, haha.

I'd bet they play Grounds for Divorce late in their set. It's their biggest hit in the States. I saw them in 09 in SF and they opened with Whether to Fly. I'm going to give BSS and New Pornos each a 1/2 hour before heading over to Elbow, probably around 7:10. Hopefully it won't be TOO crowded.

I think there are a couple of Elbow threads so sorry up front if I am bumping the wrong one. Frankly, after yesterday's performance I can't believe I am first to post this.

Having never seen Elbow before I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. They KILLED it!! God, I am sure as hell a fan now! Thanks to all of you in here for recommending them. For only the second time ever at a Coachella I actually welled up to a performance of a specific song- One Day Like This (damn I just suddenly chilled over at the thought of it again). Guy Garvey's voice is a big, sweeping baritone. He is easily one of the best "singers" I have ever seen. His voice and lyrics are like a guide over a long roadmap from song to song. Taking you through each moment with precision.

Ok, so I am getting a little pretentious here. But I just can't say enough about it. The band were so tight. A great crowd. And Guy, besides being a beautiful vocalist, had said crowd engaged and in the palm of his hand throughout. I could have easily listened to them for another hour as their short set just flew by. One of the best Coachella performances I have seen! Thanks again all!

Agreed...only Foals and PJ Harvey were as compelling front to back for the duration of their set.

The thing that most blew me away, however, was how ever single song in that set played twice as great live as it does on album...and some of those songs are some pretty amazing recordings to start with.

Agree on close One Day Like This...if Arcade Fire didn't have those damn beach balls, would be the best single song performance of entire 2011 festival.

Yeah, you could sense the importance of the performance for them; it obviously meant a great deal to them.

What made me most happy was the fact that Guy embraced the audience and took on the chore of trying to get them engaged even though he probably knew most were not that familiar with the band. For them to come here and receive an audience a quarter the quantity/devotion yet STILL go out there and give it their very all... it just meant a lot to me as well, I really appreciated it.

I remember being so nervous that nobody would sing along to the end of One Day Like This, yet Guy pulled it off and got everyone at least following the pitch/dictations. I was very relieved, needless to say... and, also needless to say, the resulting moment was obviously beautiful

There were so many people at the front not giving a fuck because they were there for One Day as A Lion or god knows what else, so that kind of sucked.

But that's second to how incredibly ON the band was that night. Jesus. Guy is such an amazing front man. Even the new album stuff (which I'm really unfamiliar with) came off well live. One Day Like This was such a great closer.

Great set.

I promised myself I would post this one photo I took. Look, I'm okay with girls going up on someone's shoulders for ONE song, because they're girls, and they're often shorter than us dudes, and, well, because they're girls. But I am not okay with dudes ever going up on someone's shoulders. And it's even less OK when it's during "One Day Like This", and their bare ass is blocking my view of the stage. So, this one's for you, Tevez...ass crack, meet Guy Garvey.

Elbow was in the top 5 for me, and the number one set I was looking forward to all weekend. They did not disappoint.

Absolutely amazing!

I only wish it would have lasted two more hours. I was just mesmerized the whole time.

I'm very glad that although it took me a bit to warm up to Seldom Seen Kid, I caught this set. I really like the new album and was glad they covered so much of it, especially with "Birds" being so damn glorious, but that closer was the coup de grace. Gonna definitely travel to see them next time they're in my vicinity (I know they won't make it to Phoenix).

They were great, but these two drunk bitches in the front made it annoying as Fuck. They kept pushing their way through and falling over people when it was nowhere near that type of crowd, after three groups complained they finally threw them out, but overall great performance by the band.

I think was right behind these girls. It took security about 5 minutes or so to get them to leave. I thought there was going to be a chick fight there for a minute.

This was the best set I saw all weekend. Though it was definitely way too short. I will travel to see them at some point.

There were so many people at the front not giving a fuck because they were there for One Day as A Lion or god knows what else, so that kind of sucked.

I was right behind you, and I didn't notice that. We were surrounded by some great Elbow fans, all singing along, including a family of four whose young kids were extremely excited to see their favorite band. Great show!

So many gay bears watching this performance. Glad to see they finally discovered them.

I think I remember that family, now that I think about it. Maybe it was just literally the people right around me. BTW next time say hi, I don't bite.

Thanks to the people here on the message board for the heads up on Elbow. Became a must-see set for me this year. Loved every second of it.

They didn't play either of the two songs I know from them, but this was still an amazing set. Guy's voice is gorgeous live, and he made holding onto the crowd look effortless. Downloading everything!

This was the one band above all others that I was most looking forward to seeing. Wow...just so pure, so lush. They seized their moment and wouldn't let go. I remember during Birds just closing my eyes soaking in how incredible it sounded. Great, great set.

Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd were behind the mixing board for the entire set. This was one of my favorite sets from the weekend. Extremely good show.

This lot was pure class. The way Guy Garvey fills a space with his gorgeous voice and soft but commanding presence is phenomenal. Great front man.

Beautiful, I finally told my friend (an avid Elbow fan) about what he missed and he just gave me the greatest "fuck you" face. Should've shelled out the $ buddy.

The whole webcast of their set

This set was my favorite of the whole festival (Leftfield was a close second).
It was a moving performance indeed. Still get goosebumps from watching it.
