I like a lot of what I've heard except the tracks with the guy MCing. Leftfield incorporates the things I love about dub reggae and merge them beautifully with a foot stomping dirty techno sound but, they've also taken the things I dislike about reggae and MCing that offsets the awesomeness. For me, if they didn't have that guy out there going "Pop! Pop! Wha! Pop! Wha! Wha! Wha! Can you hear me?" this would be all sorts of win.

According to their myspace page, they are playing the dance tent (Sahara) at 7pm. This rules out a Kanye and Strokes/Leftfield conflict, as well as any Sahara conflict, and I'm going to guess Trentemoller/DFA conflicts as well, especially if they play Sahara, or perhaps close another stage. This is good news! Although isn't the sun still out at 7pm? If so, would that be such a bad thing for those familiar with their live show?

Anyways, here's the link

sun sets around 7:30, which means it will just be starting to get a little darker around 7. In the tent it should pretty much feel like night, especially by the middle of the set.

That time would also make sense if the Sahara sunday looks something like this:

Sven Vath 11:00-12:00
Axwell 10:00-11:00
Bloody Beetroots 9:00-10:00
Duck Sauce 8:00-9:00
Leftfield 7:00-8:00

Now hopefully there's no PJ conflict...

Donaldj

I'm not saying I think Caspa deserves to close out the Sahara but I wouldn't be surprised if he did as a wildcard seeing as dubstep is pretty popular right now and Caspa is one of the more well known names. I think The Bloody Beetroots and either The Presets or Chromeo will definitely play late at night based on Coachella's past history of booking buzz live EDM bands at night. We know Axwell is headlining Sunday and I will be shocked if Ducksauce doesn't take one of the prime slots.

The same logic can be applied to Orbital, who went on around 8 (about them being a novelty act). It also depends on production-level; the one with the biggest will play last. Where was Etienne De Crecy billed in 09, and how many acts played before him that were billed higher?

Leftfield may not close, but I highly doubt they'll play any earlier than 8.

It will also depend on if GV decides to close the Sahara early on Sunday again. Which, holy shit. They better not.

betao
01-26-2011, 01:51 PM

Leftfield or Trentemoller could end up in the Gobi or Majave. I could see that. I knew you were going to bring up Orbital last year as an argument but this year's Sunday lineup is very different than last year's. Guys like Axwell and the Bloody Beetroots are seriously going to fill the Sahara. Leftfield will not.

betao
01-26-2011, 02:27 PM
I know they'll fill the Sahara, but I still like to think that GV has some will on putting the older/reunion acts on towards the end of the night. It will be interesting to see how they put this night together indeed.

On another note... If only this happened LAST year. So that Lydon could have joined them to do Open Up. That would have been amazing.

It's not out of the realm of possibility considering that Johnny lives in LA these days. Although that being said, he's pretty much an old cantankerous geezer now and probably wouldn't be paid much for 1 song.

I'd love for this to happen tho! He still likes to play that tune for sure, even during last years tour with PiL.

It wouldn't surprise me, although PiL did it as their final song to close the Outdoor on Friday last year, so maybe he'd feel like he was repeating himself. I would think Neil would've asked him, at least.

I've listened to Live at Homelands 2000 a couple of times over the past few days (it's perfect road-trip music) and I'm sold. I'm a little worried about conflicts that day (DFA 1979, PJ Harvey, and The National), but if Leftfield closes the Sahara then I think I should be ok.

Does anyone know if they still regularly drop Afrika Shox in their sets. It's not necessary, I suppose, but I really liked the Inspection (Check One)/Afrika Shox back to back. And Black Flute. I'm sure whatever they play will be good, though.

Didn't even know who Leftfield was until I stumbled upon this thread. I watched a live performance on you tube and they quickly sky rocketed to my can't miss for anything list. Whatever set time Leftfield has I know there won't be a conflict because I am going to be at that set.

Africa Shox has always been a staple of their live performances and I'd be shocked if they didn't play it at coachella, even with what's likely to be a shortened set.

So before Jonsi last year my boyfriend and I met a group of 4 (3 guys, 1 girl), who kindly shared their joint. They told me that they had all been to every single Coachella, and I tried to convince them to see Plastikman instead of Thom Yorke. Then one of the guys and I talked emphatically about how awesome it would be if Leftfield came and shocked the Sahara. I don't know if anyone in that group uses or reads the boards....but if so.....LEFTFIELD!!!

leftfields billing is wack, coming all the way from UK, pioneers of vocal electronica, peers like crystal method calling them one of the best electronic bands, recently headlining Rockness and playing mainstage at electric picknic and billed under neon trees and blood beetroots? where is the justification :) the justification is simple. we are only getting half of Leftfield. the dj quit the duo after the euro fests last summer to focus on his own material. they are still doing the same full production though, and itll still be AMAZING! for the record, beetroots have played & headlined bigger shows, neon trees have one of the biggest songs in the US right now (ugh), and leftfield isnt half as known in america as orb or orbital.

It has nothing to do with Daley moving on, and everything to do with the name recognition in the states at this point.

Hell, Underworld barely has draw in the states anymore and they're still releasing monster tunes. (I'm still disappointed in the way the crowd dissipated before their performance at Hard Haunted Mansion)

i left after 5min too, dont remember why, just that it was awful. that being said, i caught the last 15min of the set and it was one of the best things i heard all wknd..

The Orb in 2009 was one of the best Coachella sets I've ever seen. The vibe in the tent was perfect; it wasn't too packed or anything. People were leaving because it wasn't "omg face melting", which was totally fine with me. Ending the weekend with some of the grooviest ambient house/techno I've ever heard was bliss.

It's no surprise now that Coachella's (and other US festivals for that matter) billing priorities take popularity over historical relevance. It's been this way for years, and every year we bitch about it. It sucks, but what can you do. All of us would design the poster in all sorts of different ways if we could. But band agencies would bitch and moan and we may not sell tickets. Boo.

The fact of the matter at the end of the day though is that we still have Leftfield. (and had Orbital, The Orb, Plastikman, Aphex Twin, and many other rare electronic acts.)

(That being said, the fact that Orbital got less time than any other Sahara act on their day last year was downright ridiculous.)

The area went from full to half full with big open pockets in the midst of it between the performance before (Can't remember for sure, but I want to say it was A-Trak? Maybe Calvin Harris) and theirs. Huge line of people running inside... (the competing act in the other room was a DJ set from Miike Snow, which I love Miike Snow's album... and I love a lot of the pop production that two of them have done as Bloodshy & Avant... they produced Toxic, for crying out loud, easily the best pop single of the 00's... all the same, nowhere near powerful enough to merit such a draw away from Underworld)...

All the same, it allowed me plenty of room to jump around and dance like a fool.

I suspect Daley leaving will only be a notable impact if Barnes decides to release new material under the Leftfield moniker. And it'd be difficult to gauge how much of an impact that would be since the last new material was released like 12 years ago.

My eyes must of deceived me since I was closer. Still had fun.

I had to run to the restroom twice during their show (too much beer during DJ Dan's set prior, I guess)... We were like 3 people back from the stage just slightly right of absolute center... Managed to get in and get back to the same spot both times in like ten seconds... And both times also got a good look at the size of the crowd...

Either way, fuck it... that was the loss of everyone else... they were a fucking blast.

I was so happy to see Original performed live. Although the singer they had is not quite as amazing as Toni Halliday.. but all the same... had so much fun. Couldn't have asked for a better way to end such an epic weekend than Leftfield into The Presets!

All of my friends showed up based on what I had heard about them on here...not a single person I was with including myself had ever listened to more than 2 songs of theirs...HOLYYYY FUUUUUU WE ARE BELIEVERS NOW! Seriously thank you guys for this. Easily a top 5 set of the weekend. Afro-Left live was possibly my highlight of the weekend...fuuuuu take me back!

Oh thank God someone got that. I started recording myself, but said fuck it right after the drop and continued dancing my ass off. Like Rains said, nothing like dancing with such a large group of friends; possibly the biggest boardie meetup of the weekend beside Chems.

went to coachella to see leftfield and chem bros. great friday, great saturday, great sunday until ratatat started and we had to bail because of an emergency. now i have to see travel to another fest to see them before they stop touring (mega bucks since it won't be in US). for those of you who were in the mojave on sunday night, consider yourselves blessed.

All I can say is "wow".
One of the best sets all weekend, hands down.

The mini-glowruption was awesome, as was meeting a lot of you boardies there.

I must say, as much as I wish they could have been in the Sahara purely for the sound system in there, I think them being in the Mojave was a great idea, as the crowd size was perfect and you had room to get to the front without being overwhelmed by asshats trying to save a place for the generic electo-dj coming up next.

Had an amazing time, and I really hope to see them again at some point in my life.

I was going to check out BBDC77 after The Strokes but as I was heading over I remembered the boards endorsement of these guys and I decided to poke my head in to check it out. Holy jesus I was absolutely blown away. It was so fucking good I could not believe it. Easily the best set I saw Sunday if not at the entire festival.

While I don't post on these boards very often at all (as made obvious by my post count), I nevertheless wanted to mention that I had such an awesome time meeting some of you (who I assume do post on here fairly often). I've forgotten your names but perhaps you'll be able to recognize yourself in these videos. Being around such amazing people made Leftfield even more incredible. I'd been wanting to see Leftfield for a number of years now but since they hadn't been playing, I figured they would end up with the Future Sound of London as dance acts I'd never get to see in my lifetime. I wasn't even sure what to expect out of their set but I was diggin everything they threw out from the moment go. Good vibrant sounds, well mixed, a couple of live vocalists ("Afro Left" is my favorite song of theirs so to see the MC come out was a huge treat). Definitely glad I stuck to the plan and caught them, they were INCREDIBLE!

I have some bad news guys: I caught up with Paul D (producer) shortly after their set, and asked about anymore US gigs, and he said not in the foreseeable future. Maybe in December at something, but he didn't sound very confident about it.

So good though. I was worried that they wouldn't have a big crowd but more people started showing up as it started. Plenty of space to dance and whatnot.

It wasn't Plastikman mind-blowing, but it was still a fantastic way to end the weekend for me.

Afro-Left
Africa Shox

It might have been, I'm not sure. It was the guy centerstage behind the keyboards, who I assumed was one of the guys. I asked another boardie who it was and he said Paul D. I wanted to meet up with him to tell him how cool the berimbau instrument was.

Either way, I guess Coachella was a one off.

Yeah, it was most certainly Neil Barnes. Paul Daley has been un-involved in the latest Leftfield tour, he used to be on the drum-kit during their live-shows.
