Ok, so I am going to use this thread to educate folks on Odd Future and make a post about each of the 10 or so members. Starting with the ones that people don't know much about.

I begin with Jasper The Dolphin (only because he has the best name).

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1236.snc4/156821_182741371739373_100000105343289_692736_4963 894_n.jpg

Jasper doesn't do shit except for smoke weed and have sex. He doesn't really have any talents... except for "taking bitches" and "facing blunts".

He is featured on three Odd Future songs, "Swag Me Out" and "Round and Round" off the Radical mixtape, and "Tina" off Bastard. He's also a pretty good skateboarder. The only reason he is in the group is because he was Tyler's only friend in junior high.

He is also coming out with a mixtape called Dolphin Life (that is sure to suck in the best way possible) sometime this year.

Sydney Bennett (19 years old) is the lone female of the group. She is responsible for a few beats on Mike G's (mediocre) album, Ali, as well the engineering, mastering, and mixing of each Odd Future song. She is oddly attractive. She is gay. She plays drums.

Syd's house (along with her younger brother Taco's) is where all of the recording takes place. Her parents have a guest house in which they allow the kids to be creative in. It has become like a second home to many members of the group.

My favorite Syd The Kid beat:

They don't really do it as often as you might think. That's just the shock-value shit that gets the most attention. Domo/Mike/Hodgy pretty much don't mention it. It's mostly Tyler, and sometimes Earl.

This shit cracks me up so hard. Tyler keeps freaking the fuck out over nothing and screwing up the beat on purpose.

The Super 3

http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lafxpcLEhE1qc1xlro1_500.jpg

The Super 3 are a two-man production team made up of Matt Martians and Hal (of NRK) who also go by the name The Jet Age Of Tomorrow. They make experimental, mostly instrumental, psychedelic, jazz/funk-influenced, space music. Some of it is good, some of it is not. Matt is the oldest member of Odd Future (21), and currently lives in Atlanta, along with Hal. Their first album Voyager was mostly bad with a few bright spots, but Journey To The 5th Echelon was a major improvement. It also features Om'Mas of Sa-Ra as well as Casey Veggies, Vince Staples and various members of Odd Future.

Here are a couple of their best tracks:

lTbjQRBHbOY

(fan video):

csTVk5seYns

They are also working on a live show at the moment, as they have yet to perform any of this material live. Not sure how it's going to work yet, or if they will be featured at Coachella or not. My guess would be no, considering Odd Future live shows are usually at least an hour due to all the members and material, and I don't see them getting more than a 50 minute time slot at the fest.

Matt is an excellent illustrator as well. He is responsible for all of the official hand-drawn Odd Future artwork:

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c104/smoothvilly/REGGEAxJAZZ%20FEST%2007/2009%20rolls/00A_00091.jpg

Frank Ocean is the most recent member of Odd Future and probably the least similar to any of the others. He doesn't eat red meat (the rest of the gang is obsessed with bacon), lives in New York City and is the lone R&B singer of the group. He was first featured at the end of Domo Genesis' song, "Steamroller". More noticeably he sings the hook on two songs off MellowHype's BLACKENEDWHITE album:

AbbCqsPDtjo

A while back it was mentioned that he and Hodgy Beats were working on an album that was a little more laid-back and R&B influenced (for the ladies). But I have yet to hear anything more about it.

Still waiting to hear something I like.

Well, they definitely aren't for everyone. Earl, however, is probably the best starting point if you're interested...

The mysterious Earl Sweatshirt

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs254.ash1/18159_297785067128_587802128_3432131_7182575_n.jpg

Earl (real name Thebe) is originally from Sacramento, where I believe he met Tyler for the first time, whose mom had moved him up there for a short period. Earl eventually moved to LA and started rapping.

He had an online journal for sometime and went by the name Sly Tendencies before he joined Odd Future:

http://slytendencies.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2009-04-14T14%3A36%3A00-07%3A00&max-results=7

March 9, 2009:

I'm Sly. I'm fifteen. I like to write music...
Little Basic Info: I've been writing for a bit, and i've been spitting since like the sixth grade. I sucked ass until about seven months ago, when I hit an epiphany.. I'm not quite sure exactly what it was, but it was for the better. I rap.

He later changed his name to Earl Sweatshirt and joined the Wolf Gang as a skater and a rapper. His debut album EARL came out March 31st, 2010. It is very short however, clocking in at just under 25 minutes. He is far and away the best pure rapper of the group. His rhyming skills are ridiculous. He can be funny, serious, scary, emotional, metaphorical etc. etc…

There have been many rumors as to where Earl is and why. This is a direct quote from one of OF's managers. "His mom sent him to boot camp/boarding school for 2 years." He left at the beginning of June, 2010. He turns 18 in February of 2012, at which point his mom would no longer have any legal right to keep him there. As for why he is there, I'm not quite sure. Thrasher mag said it had something to do with a skateboarding ticket. The more likely rumors have to do with the fact that he was lying to his mom about going to study, when in fact he would be at Syd's studio smoking weed and rapping about killing people, raping women, using homophobic slurs (his mom is a lesbian) and talking about various other subjects no mother would like to hear come out of her 16 year-old son's mouth. It's probably a combination of all of those.

Apparently, he has no idea of how big Odd Future has become since he left. I'm just concerned that he is going to get brainwashed or something in that camp and come back a completely different person. In any event, until he returns, whenever that may be. We have this to hold us over:

"Limbs swingin' axes at you antonyms of savages and praying that it damages, your hobby's what my passion is."

DNM1f24QBPY

"Wolf Gang, we ain't barkin', nah, try talkin' on a blog with you fuckin' arms cut off."

78_loMbmKJ8

"So I'm guessin' there's questions that need addressin' huh? Like how we fresh in our adolescence and wreckin' 'em."

"Mrs. Claus trippin' balls, I think she had enough, and by enough I mean we dope as fuck. She had a gram of us."

Domo Genesis is sort of a stereotypical weed rapper. What really sets him apart though is the left-field, tripped out production he gets from Tyler and Left Brain. Dude can definitely rap too. He's kind of similar to Jasper, just trade skateboarding ability with rapping ability. One of the mottos from his debut album Rolling Papers, is: "smoking weed, fucking bitches and eating cereal". He joined the group in late 2008 (I believe), when he and Tyler became good friends at Westchester High. Since then he has been at ASU, but plans to drop-out in order to focus more on music. His first time performing live with Odd Future was on December 1st at the Echo.

From what I have gathered, Syd and Taco's family is the most well-off, hence the home studio/guest house. They live near Crenshaw/Washington. I think Earl is middle class. Tyler was raised by a struggling single mom who moved around the city a lot. Most of them are from Ladera/Hawthorne mid city areas. Mostly middle/working class families I believe. Definitely not rich kids... but they might be soon.

Oh yeah, I'm not sure about the Super 3's ^^^ background that much, they are from Atlanta and might be more well off. The LA kids get lots of free shit from the Diamond/Supreme/Hundreds stores on Fairfax because they hang out there all the time. They also have a couple managers with lots of pull in the industry as well as friends from the Sa-Ra collective who provide them with lots of production equipment.

Their first release, the Odd Future Tape came out in 08 and was a collective album. It has it's moments, but you can tell they were still finding themselves. Also, Radical is a mixtape that features the whole group, but it's all previously used beats, no original production. It's quite good too, it's a good entry point for new listeners that gives a nice complete picture of the group as a whole.

I haven't heard anything about a collective project in the future, maybe when Earl gets back. All of the solo records for the most part have a song with each member though.

Yeah, most aren't about that, Tyler is the main offender. Some of the Earl songs I posted earlier you might like. "Kill" has crazy rhymes (and even a reference to BasedGod!), "Drop" and "Cool" are all great Earl songs, still pretty violent and misogynistic, but no direct rape references. Anything by MellowHype, (check out "Fuck The Police"), Domo, and Mike G are all devoid of that stuff.

As for Tyler, check out "Sandwitches" and "Seven".

Naw, I think that's completely normal. You should probably be worried if you hear some of that stuff and not be turned off a little bit. I think that's sort of why they do it. At that age, nothing is really offensive, but they know that to most normal people it is. Nothing you're hearing is out of the ordinary from what goes on in lots of conversations between guys that age, especially in the kind of environment many of them grew up in. They just love to push buttons. I remember when I was that age I loved to do the same thing, just say super offensive shit to see people's reactions. I grew out of it and I think they will too eventually. But for now, it's kind of nice hearing these kids say whatever is on their minds and truly not give a shit about what people think about them, no matter how deplorable it might make them seem.

Hodgy is the rapping half of MellowHype and a very solid lyricist in his own right, even though he is often overshadowed by Earl and Tyler. I honestly don't know much about Hodgy because he doesn't really answer questions online as much as the other members. I believe he and Left Brain were both up in San Francisco attending college until a few months ago, when they dropped out and moved back to LA so they could to direct their full attention towards music. Tyler often says he is the hardest working member of Odd Future. He is very short in person and has a lot of tattoos.

Ha, nice title change. At least they could have changed it to "make sweet love to Coachella", or something...

Here is Left Brain, one of my favorites:

Left Brain

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l8tegzHyOt1qdepeqo1_500.jpg

Left Brain (real name Vyron) handles all production for the two man group, MellowHype, which also includes rapper Hodgy Beats. He also provides beats for Earl, Domo and Mike G, though not nearly as much as Tyler contributes. He has a little bit of Lex Luger in the way he patterns his hi-hats and bass drums, but he definitely has his own style. He is a big fan of slowed-down chopped and screwed southern rap beats. BLACKENEDWHITE's production definitely improved over YelloWhite, but I have a feeling that is mostly due to the kind of cheap equipment and programs he was using early on. Tyler has stated that Left Brain is in his top 3 producers of all time, along with Pharrell and James Pants.

Tyler's thoughts on "Gram" : "yeah, that song is fucking amazing. If i could choose one song to describe what Odd Future sounds like, it would be that song."

Gram:
fE_S024eOHU

This next track is a BANGER - while the production here is top notch, this song also illustrates Left Brain's complete lack of skills on the mic (2nd verse), which is probably why he almost never raps. Tyler comes in afterwards though with a verse that sounds like what Slim Shady would have done if he had written Jay-Z's convo with the cops on 99 Problems:

GolfWang, you did a great job with this thread and had me very excited to check this out, but with no Earl, I will probably be elsewhere since Tyler isn't half the lyricist Earl is. Thank you though. Since you know so much can we assume you are Earl's mom and take it out on you?

Sure haha. I hate her too, like seriously how does she not see how talented this kid is?! whatever.

Tyler is the best part about Odd Future live though. That dude goes fucking nuts. On a big stage like Coachella, I would assume he is going to bring his A-game and then some. I've never seen Earl live, but I find it hard to believe he would have half the stage presence Tyler does. However, I do hope I am proved wrong once he returns.

Definitely my #1 to see act at Coachella.

Have been obsessed for the past 6-7 months and it's been great watching Odd Future blow up worldwide.

Rolling Papers is my fav OFWGKTA album, sucks about Wiz Khalifa ripping off Domo's title for his next album.

Also why the hell do people refer to the OFWGKTA albums as mixtapes when they are clearly albums (only difference is that their not phsyically available to purchase in CD/Vinyl form).

LeftBrain is my favourite of the group, dude is cool as fuck.

I'm not judging OFWGKTA as a whole, but my friend recommended French and Bastard by Tyler the Creator. First of all, I was just not impressed. Second was the overly misogynistic lyrics. "Black bitches mad cuz my main bitch vanilla?" As a black woman (and a self-respecting woman in general) I wouldn't be caught dead in a crowd while he was rapping this trash, and not because I really care that he likes white women.

Then there is the fact that dudes in this thread say that they will grow out of rapping about rape. Yeah or they'll just be encouraged to keep rapping about it once they see that their fans encourage/find it acceptable. Just my two cents!

While Bastard is my favorite OF album now, I would never recommend that to someone first. I remember hearing it in early 2010 and not really liking it all that much. It wasn't until I saw the Earl video later on and listened to the EARL album that I really got into them. BLACKENEDWHITE is probably the most accessible OF release, and the Radical mixtape offers a little bit of everything.

Swagadelic, swagadocious, swaggerrific, swaggots.

I just finished EARL and I am impressed. For a kid who's what, 16-17 years old, he's better than 3/4 of the MC's out there today. His story/background makes him all the more interesting. I hope things work out for him and he finds the right place to develop his talent, because I can already see it in this album alone.

Mike G was a big fan of Odd Future for a while before being asked by Tyler to join the group sometime in 2009. Mike is a also a big fan of the chop/screw southern sound. His first album, Ali is pretty mehhh, but there are a few standouts. However, every track I've heard him on since then has been greatly improved. He also has the least amount of stage presence of anybody in the group, but he's slowly getting better at that as well. He's got a really great voice, and he's just now coming in to his own and learning how to use it to his advantage. He reminds me of Snoop just a bit, with the smooth voice and all.

The best examples of this are his choruses and his verse (3rd verse) on MellowHype's "Loaded":

ZcZ3yFOdUdI

Here's Mike rapping over Dre's "Kush" beat:

TRJBj-qzb8w

And here he is rapping over Mos Def's "The Panties" beat:

ANhul2Dyfeg

His new album Gold is due out March 18th, supposedly being primarily produced by Syd.

That's a problem. It's also something with Hip Hop/Rap in general these days. MC's overly cussing without any meaning or reason. I tend to think after the first 1-2, it just means they lack a decent vocabulary. If you don't have Eminem's cadence and ability to bend words, a thesaurus is a cheap alternative.

Then again, maybe I've been listening to too many mixtapes lately..

Here's... Taco

http://diamondsupplyco.com/diamondlife/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Sherb_J_DMND_OFWGKTA_ECHO_DEC_1_BLOG64.jpg

Taco is the other member of Odd Future who really does nothing and has no talent. He's also not funny (unlike Jasper), a fact that everyone constantly reminds him of. He is Syd's younger brother (age 16) and became Tyler's best friend over the last year and a half or so as a result of constantly being in the studio with him. He is featured on two Odd Future songs, "Swag Me Out" and "Tina". He is also the videographer on Tyler's "VCR" video as well as others.

Tyler, The Creator AKA Ace Creator AKA Wolf Haley

http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ldgtc2rJ701qdepeqo1_500.jpg

Tyler is the mastermind and the reason OFWGKTA exists. He is a bitter, insecure, angry, eccentric, immature, hyper, emotional, hilarious, hypocritical and unique visionary. He originally started Odd Future in 2007 as an idea for a skateboarding, clothing and music magazine. Besides the musical members of the group there is also a relatively significant skate team, some of whom extremely talented (see Nakel Smith).

After a couple years of working with various local teen artists and putting out the Odd Future Tape, an early compilation released in 2008, Tyler was ready to give up on music altogether. He almost decided not to release Bastard, after sending early copies of the album to a few hip-hop blogs (2DopeBoyz, Nah Right etc.), because none of them took any notice. However, after being persuaded by friends not to give up, Tyler released his debut album on December 25th, 2009.

This was also the beginning of his beef with said blogs. The first words heard on Bastard, are: "Yo, fuck 2DopeBoyz and fuck Nah Right…" Bastard is by far the darkest, angriest OF release, and also probably the best, most cohesive. The theme of the album follows Tyler during a session with a school guidance counselor/therapist. It deals mostly with his father issues, sexual frustration and his penchant for offending people. All songs on the album are produced by Tyler.

It should be noted that Tyler hates sampling in his songs, and has disowned the one song on the album that uses any samples, "Odd Toddlers". Tyler has been very open about his desire to make it big, often stating things like, "fuck underground hip hop" and, "real hip hop is gay". He wants to sell out as soon as possible and make lots of money. Hey, at least he's upfront about it. He is also the only member who doesn't drink or take drugs.

His next album, Goblin is due out sometime in April. Apparently it sounds nothing like his first. Look out for the "Yonkers" video and first single this friday.

Does anybody know how big the Pure Filth stage is going to be?

Because by the looks of it, it's looking like Odd Future are going to have too big of a crowd for a small stage by the time April comes by.

Is the "Wolf" album he talks about in the article the same as "Goblin"?

It's not. Actually, when I first started listening I thought all of Tyler's songs were pitched down a little bit. Turns out only some of his songs pitch the vocals down and it's super obvious when he does. He just has a really deep voice.

My favorite part of that article:

"Let's be real. I'm fuckin' 19. We have fuckin' Drake. I'm not the biggest Drake fan, but let's be honest" are we in fuckin' VIP with forty fuckin' bitches and fuckin' Bentleys? No. We're broke as shit, eating Cinnamon Toast Crunch and watching fuckin' cartoons. It's forty billion other niggas my age, eating Cinnamon Toast Crunch and watching Cartoon Network just like us. I'm not trying to force and be their voice, but I just happen to be the fuckin' person standing the fuck up saying that shit, swaggin' it the fuck out."

Sandwitches was originally released as a stand-alone single in October. It is now going to be on Goblin. The new version has the intro they use for their live shows (which I agree is completely unnecessary). Nice to hear the mastered version though.

Love the 3rd verse of Yonkers. That pitchfork line is great. I also like the line about beating up Deshay "with a bunch of magazines I'm in". although at this point he should probably just let it go and stop giving him more recognition.

Yeah, it was announced today that Tyler signed a one-album deal to release Goblin on XL Recordings. I don't think there is a specific date for it yet. Also, Hodgy said that MellowHype's next album is going to come out on Halloween again.
