Who will have the most "visual" set up on Sunday? It seems to be the trend that they will most likely close out the Sahara. Leftfield? Presets? Trentemoller?

With Trentemoller so low on the poster, I have a sneaking suspicion that we will not be treated to the spectacle that we saw in that video.

However, let's wait until his performance at Ultra. That will help clarify.

The only thing that truly disappoints me about the lineup this year is The Sahara. Crystal Castles? Bullshit (worst thing I have ever seen live). Swedish House Cheese? Moar Bullshit. Afrojack? Just some artists that sounds exactly everyone else in his genre.

Seems that Pure Filth is going to be the place too be, and im not even a dub-step guy. At least they are gonna have proper DnB going there.

Dont get me wrong though, Trentmoller and Ducksauce should be fun. I hope Boyz Noise/Blood Beatroots are good too, though those are the two acts that will have the biggest influx of kandy kids

Mr. Porter
01-18-2011, 10:52 PM
I expected Dada Life and a Wolfgang Gartner return. Also a big pull like Underworld or Groove Armada live. Whatever, it's a good Sahara Tent potentially. wtf is ingrosso doing that's preventing a swedish house mafia set anyway lol

Sahara crowd is going to be good this year. I think most of the electronic acts I don't like will be at Pure Filth (i.e. Skrillex).

You pick one of the worst names on the lineup. Pure Filth is going to have some amazing music going down in there. But to address this thread - yes, Sahara lineup is great as is Pure Filth lineup. (Sam has posted most of the day by day schedule on his fb, which does not include Skrillex at this point)

Mount Kimbie's not really that dancy live (at least, not when I caught their first L.A. gig last year). I kinda actually envision them in Gobi for some (strange) reason.

Are Steve Angello (since he's billed over PVD) or Empire of the Sun really our Saturday night Sahara headliners, though? I'm still holding out hope for a big(ger) addition!

I'm pretty sure Skrillex will be in the Sahara since he's not on the PF schedule and had one of the best selling electronic tracks this year. "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" was #1 on beatport for awhile, and it's been dropped at all the big boy clubs in Hollywood.

Now comes the question: Which ones will be DJ sets and which ones will not.

I think I can shed some light on this question.

LIVE SETS:

The Chemical Brothers
Crystal Castles
Cut Copy
Monarchy
Boys Noize
Empire of the Sun
The Twelves
Daedelus
Death From Above 1979 (if the Rapture can play the Sahara then so can DFA and they'd be the perfect closer IMO)
Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77
Chromeo
The Presets
Leftfield
Trentemoller
Rye Rye

DJ SETS:

Sasha
Magnetic Man
Erick Morillo
Boys Noize
Afrojack
A-Trak
Sander Kleinenberg
Excision
Skrillex
Steve Angello
Paul Van Dyk
Fedde Le Grand
Laidback Luke
DJ Hype
DJ Marky
Joachim Garraud
Axwell
Sven Vath
Duck Sauce
Green Velvet
Jack Beats
Riva Starr
Joy Orbison

And as for Pure Filth stage artists ( http://purefilthla.com/ ) the only ones I know are 12th planet, High Contrast and DJ Zinc which will all be DJ sets.

Yes, SBTRKT is gonna be very good but not in the Sahara tent.

you must be thinking of a different SBTRKT.

I can see why there might be a slight debate based on a couple release, but live is a whole different thing. Plus most of the releases are uptempo.

I'd put big money on SBTRKT in the sahara.

You people. This is the worst Sahara lineup I have ever seen. Its almost like the whole thing was an after thought to the rest of the fest. It's completely cheesy and lacking in any originality. There are a handful of gems among the turds but those are few and far between. I wonder if anyone put any thought at all into the Sahara tent. Looks like they just grabbed as many of the mainstream/popular acts as they could regardless of sound/vibe.

Afrojack?

THANK YOU, QFT.

All this talk about this being "the best Sahara in years." is some fucking bullshit. Instead of having one David Guetta we have both Axwell and Angello. Prepare for some Euro cheese to the max.

In addition we have Crystal Castles, who are really just the worst thing to happen to "live" electronic. Chromeo can be alright in small doses, but thats some cheese none the less. The Do Labs music > Sahara this year

Edit: Well maybe comparing the Sahara to Do-lab music is over doing it a little

I also agree that while the lineup does have some gems... most of them will have to play at 5PM. There is a ton of garbage on here as well, and paired with some of the other main/outdoor stage upper tier acts, the 9-11 slot may be terrible on some nights which would really ruin the festival for me. Once again Coachella could be really good OR kinda lame based on the schedule that they will release a whole 2 fucking days before the fest starts.

I couldn't because you're right that no stage is solid from top to bottom. The artists who play the other 4 stages are for the most part interchangeable with each other. Sure there are a lot more spots that need to be filled but the pool of artists to choose from is bigger.

But, it is a bit different with the Sahara tent since we have one stage to represent the entire EDM community. ( I don't count Pure Filth because its focused to such a narrow sub genre that it might as well be the Do Lab).

The Sahara tent is 1/5th the festival. And for the other 4/5th seems like they managed to do a great job in securing some eclectic, unique, niche, and up and coming acts and overall a good pool of artists. Yet, in the Sahara tent, we get 4 different artists who sound the same, no unique acts, and nothing that won't be at Lolla/Sasquatch/SXSW.

He would do separate sets in Chicago often from what my friend who lived there told me. Sometimes billed as Cajmere (doing more Cajmere tracks/types of songs) and sometimes billed as Green Velvet and sometimes billed as GV live. The few times I have seen him have always been as Green Velvet and only once "live". It doesn't really matter which one it is to me - last time I saw him (here at Voyeur) was a fucking blast and that was a dj set. Headlining the Sahara is not the same as closing out the Sahara

What's the difference?

malcolmjamalawesome
01-20-2011, 10:31 AM
What's the difference?

The Sahara is less subject to the "rules" of "headliner" = "last act to play" OR "biggest name on the poster" = "last act to play".

In example, in 2009, my beloved MSTRKRFT played AFTER the Chem Bros DJ Set, but even I know the Chem Bros were either the "headliner" or "biggest name."

you're right. I retract. I said trance as a reflex referring to boring music because I've never liked what I've heard from him and always associate him with that cracked out euro/ibiza set which I always just blirt out trance before thinking about.

I'm judgemental.

Isn't everyone?

I love judging.

I saw a vid of him years ago trying to hold himself together at the decks while shirtless and seemingly in underwear sweating profusely, wearing a crown of thorns. At least the guy has panache. Barring candy raves, techno crowds are probalby by far highest, most blitzed out folks I've ever seen.

SHM probably costs way more to book collectively than any of them individually. GV probably saved a bunch of money by doing it the way they did.

The sahara does have its cheese as usual, but there is some really good stuff to be had by all. As Patrick said, Leftfield is a huge get.

Leftfield, The Chems, Sasha (with a new set up), Sven Vath, Trentmoller, Green Velvet, Sander K

That's enough to call it a good Sahara.

Sahara "headlining" is irrelevant.

exactly. i would actually argue there's no such thing as a sahara headliner. a "head-liner" is just that...the top line on the poster. there is only one headliner each day, and its usually (but not always) the last act on the main stage. regardles off when they play though, the headliner is the biggest name on the poster. Since the sahara acts are usually smaller and dispersed throughout the poster, theres no "sahara headliner" just a "sahara closer" which is the last dj on each day in the sahahra, which is also usually (but not always) the biggest electronic act of the day.

Also, I count 11 Sahara acts on Friday not including Crystal Castles, so I think it's actually fair to guess that they won't be dirtying up the tent with Alice's voice.

Based on the Chem Bros dj set, they deserved to be billed at the bottom of the poster, with MSTRKRFT in their poster position, as they succeeded in destroying the Sahara. I love Chem Bros but I can't say enough how badly their set sucked! so much that we upped and left. I'm sure they will redeem themselves this year though.

WORD

I'm seeing him with the Twelves next month.

The Sahara has a few great acts I wanna see, like A-Trak, Boys Noize, Duck Sauce, The Twelves and a few others. But one thing I believe it's missing this year is a good mellow summer vibe dj set that is a bit chiller than everyone else. Aeroplane last year was so good! Booking djs like Classixx or Tensnake would complete it for me. Either way, I'm still looking forward to dancing my ass off to the guys on the lineup I already mentioned. Just my two cents.

that's my guess, seems like it would have good flow.

house to bring in the sunset > dubstep as night falls > deep house to weed out the non EDM fanatics > breakbeat as the drugs take effect > electro/techno to blow everyone's heads up

Chemical Brothers will close, the visual set up is what makes that pretty much fact. Boys Noize is live but does not have a visual set up so I really really doubt he will close.

For real. Why do so many people think BN will close after Chems? The biggest stage setup warrants the closing slot.

Sander K > Afrojack > Erick Morillo > Magnetic Man > Boys Noize > Sasha > Chems

Sasha sandwiched between Morillo and MM would work as well

A-Trak will probably be on after Afrojack/before Erick Morillo. And I think Brandt Brauer Frick will play in the Sahara.

Also: it's entirely likely that that Pure Filth lineup is fake (typos/errors, no verification as of yet).
