Don't we already know which acts are playing on the d&b/dub step/like i care/Pure Filth stage? If so, just leave them off these predictions and keep them in the Pure Filth thread.

how can you possibly have a set times thread without placing the acts on the poster?

do you know for a fact which stage Daedelus is playing? Gobi or Mojave or Oasis Stage?

what about High Contrast? do we know for a fact it's not a Sahara opener?

Mary Anne Hobbs doesn't fit in with the dnb on saturday, is she Sahara?

i think he is referring to the fact that pure filth has said that they are having their own stage in the polo fields with more acts, than what is on the poster.

clumsy342
01-19-2011, 05:39 PM
haha.. some time needs to pass first. hopefully by Feb 1, they'll drop/replace/move around some acts a bit.

I just read about the Pure Filth stage.. I was totally unaware of this. And from how it sounds, I don't think it needs to be included in the set times. (similar to Do-Lab acts)

But last night I put all the names of the acts on the template and it's like clusterfuck city. Don't even know where to begin. especially since the "subheadliners" are a tricky situation. I really wish they would go back to the way the poster used to be.

Edit: here it is

From Sam's FB, here are the acts that will be at the Pure Filth:

So Mumford conflicting with either Animal Collective or Arcade Fire? I think there's too big of a crossover audience, and Bright Eyes just seems more suited for the outdoor. Have them conflict with AC.

Also I feel like Neon Trees will get the B.O.B. treatment. Early afternoon main stage.

that seems like too much gear to put up and take down between those three bands. Didn't the Strokes hit the festivals with a pretty elaborate backdrop? and I would expect the same from Duran Duran and Kanye. It would make sense to have some down time to have Kanye get his stage show ready so we don't have a bonnaroo type disaster.

True, but the Strokes have the biggest ego of any band out there (outside of Kayne maybe), and I can't see them finally agreeing to play, only to headline the outdoor theatre. Afterall they're listed as a co-headliner...the second line wasn't good enough for them?

If they are on the same stage, this is indeed the way it's going to happen. Kanye just had the biggest album of the year. In fact, I was surprised that the Strokes are co-headlining his day, in my opinion he is by far the biggest of the four headliners.

Well originally I was thinking the National would get the sunset slot on the main stage, but given that Duran Duran is a big name, along with the Strokes/Kayne, perhaps National are getting sunset on the Outdoor while Duran Duran on the main stage? It's fair to assume that none of the first three acts listed each day are going to conflict with each other.

there's no reason to think KOL/Black Keys/Interpol, AF/AC/Mumford, or Kanye/Strokes/Duran will conflict even if it seems like there wouldn't be much of an overlap in their fan base.

Before we think who is going to close the outdoor... who we think will play the mainstage should be established. Do we think the mainstage will go Bright Eyes->Mumford & Sons->Animal Collective->Arcade Fire?

Or, do we think Bright Eyes and/or Mumford & Sons will go on the outdoor theatre at some point?

What's your reasoning on no one opposing AF on the outdoor?

I think BAD would be sick taking PiL's slot from last year last night after the headliner is finished, but i don't see them finishing it up that early.

So then the main is Bright Eyes > Mumford > Animal Collective > AF

While Outdoor is BSS> Empire of the Sun > BAD ??

Woh I hope not. I really hope Gogol play in the mojave around 6 or 7. It is entirely possible they wind up on the outdoor around 5 though. Gogol closed the mojave against Bjork in 07... I highly doubt they will put them that late in a tent again.

I could see the mainstage going

Bright Eyes 9:30-10:40
Animal Collective 10:05-11:05
Arcade Fire 11:30-1:00

With the Outdoor being

Big Audio Dynamite 9:05-9:55
Mumford & Sons 10:20-11:30
Empire of The Sun 11:55-12:55

This way, there is no "dead space" at the same time on both stages, and, if some one really want to, they could see almost full sets from Bright Eyes, Mumford & Sons and either Arcade Fire or Empire of the Sun.

What are the chances we see Fri/Sat set-times more like Saturday from last year, where the "headliner" goes on at like 9:30 but there's a lot of close-out acts later on? With a 1AM curfew, you could avoid conflicts if acts like Caifanes, Big Audio Dynamite, or even Animal Collective didn't go on until around midnight.

Outdoor Theatre

Exactly. Aside from their short gig opening up for NIN, DFA 1979 probably never played that many gigs in huge spaces. In fact, I would wager most of their gigs were held in venues smaller than the gap between the mainstage and the audience. They would not translate well on the mainstage, and I trust Paul T is smart enough to recognize this.

the problems with this idea are:
1. The Strokes were touring with a pretty elaborate stage show, I don't know if 50 minutes is enough to take it down and put Kanye's up.
2. Seeing as the Strokes are billed as a headliner one would think they would get over an hour to play, this would not allow for Duran Duran to play after dark which I think they will.

Conflicts worthy of stomping kittens (imo):
Fri:
Titus Andronicus vs Morning Benders
Cut Copy vs Magnetic Man vs !!!

Sat:
The Tallest Man On Earth vs Broken Social Scene
Animal Collective vs Scissor Sisters or Empire of the Sun or Mumford or Shpongle

Sun:
The Strokes vs Kanye? --that's probably idiotic.

ok, i've decided to stick with the original plan... with only slight difference.

I'm not going to start the separate threads until i'm ready to post the schedules.
And I'm not going to post the schedules until they are at least halfway decent.
(just going to use previous years' times and plug in names)

here's the slight difference:
But if I can get all three days lookin' like they are at least at a good starting point (which shouldn't take too long), we can start this before the feb 1.

btw if anyone wants to pm me anything they've been working on, i'll happily take a look at it. my first attempt is probably as good as anyone elses.

Good idea. I think last year we actually overthought the predictions. I remember in 08 and 09 we didnt start the template until, like, March.

I will definately be stopping in here to give my 2 cents though.

rage has always been really helpful.

something is confusing me.. Skrillex... has got to be Pure Filth, right? Not Sahara?
because there are still too many names on Friday.

excision? skrillex?

rage patton
01-24-2011, 10:24 PM
Here are all of the acts playing the Pure Filth stage...

- Friday: Beardyman, Jakes, Breakage, 12th Planet, Mt. Kimbie, OFWTKTA, Kyle Hall + more TBA

- Saturday: Andy C & G.Q, Lil’ B, DJ Hype, Mary Anne Hobbs, DJ Marky, DJ Kentaro, SBTRKT, Ras G, Alf Alpha + more TBA

- Sunday: High Contrast, DJ Zinc, Kode 9, Ramadamman, Terror Danjah, Thunderball, Take, Roska, Lorn, Tokimonsta, Zed Bias +more TBA

Skrillex is not playing on the Pure Filth stage.

yeah, i keep going back to that list thinking "he's GOT to be there".
(after what I've seen of him, I just can't picture him playing the sahara)

well, maybe they are just planning on losing a handful of acts.
unless they are just going to cram as much as they possibly can into each day.

Skrillex will be in the Sahara and it will be packed.

seriously. if anything there MIGHT be a 5 minute overlap. bands listed that high don't typically conflict.

AC vs. The Kills on the other hand. would literally break my heart. yes, literally.

I'm going to guesstimate (idealize). I'll underline the sunset acts.

FRIDAY (This is a weird day, so I don't know)
MAIN: Caifanes > Interpol > The Black Keys > Kings of Leon
OUT: Cee Lo Green > Brandon Flowers > Lauren Hill > Robyn

SATURDAY
MAIN: Broken Social Scene > Bright Eyes > Animal Collective > Arcade Fire
OUT: Suede > Mumford & Sons > Big Audio Dynamite > Empire of the Sun

SUNDAY
MAIN: Nas & DM > The National > The Strokes > Kanye West
OUT: JEW > Death From Above 1979 > PJ Harvey > Duran Duran (Between Headliners)

A lot of this makes sense to me. On Friday, would Lauryn or Robyn end up in the Gobi (ala Sia or Corinne)? Saturday looks reasonable. On Sunday, would The Strokes conflict with PJ Harvey? I don't see Kanye playing unopposed, so I could see DFA closing the Outdoor opposite him.

People said that in 07. And then last year when it sold out in March. Not happening this year.

And Daft Fro... Titus will not be on the Outdoor. Neither will OFF! Sleigh Bells will not play the Gobi again either. And Wire wil not be on the mainstage. I am willing to bet anything all 3 of those will be in the mojave. Also, you seemed to have forgotten about Flogging Molly on Friday.

DRcube

Cold Cave definitely won't be opening the outdoor.

Re: Daft Fro's lineup

Friday: Cut Copy won't be playing the Gobi again, especially in an evening slot. I do see Caifanes playing opposite KOL, but not sure if they'd get the Outdoor or the Mojave.

Saturday: The Kills won't downgrade to the Gobi AND play opposite the headliner. Their set had some overlap with The Cure's set in 2009, and they were in the Mojave. Erykah will not be on the Main Stage that late (either earlier or another stage). Gogol will not be playing sunset.

Sunday: Best Coast will not play the Gobi that late (either earlier or another stage). She Wants Revenge won't be on the Main Stage (they played Outdoor after DM vs. DP in 2006, so probably in a tent this time). I also see Phantogram in a tent (Mojave mid/late afternoon).

^ Wow. That's pretty impressive. When your "headache throbbing headache" subsides, let's see what you come up with for Saturday and Sunday.

Clumsy, what do you think?

cutterbutter
01-26-2011, 11:38 PM
I think that's a pretty good place to start for the Friday schedule.

I just think some things will have to be tweaked. Aquabats need to be in the mojave basically. Think Matt & Kim last year. They rely on crowd interactions.

And switch Caifanes and Brandon Flowers.

rage patton
01-26-2011, 11:44 PM
Why oh why do you people keep insisting on putting The Aquabats at a stage that is not the Mojave or the Gobi. There is no way in hell they are playing the mainstage or outdoor.

Phantasma Del Mar
01-27-2011, 12:23 AM
Switch The Aquabats and Flogging Molly's spots and it looks a little more realistic.

rage patton
01-27-2011, 12:23 AM
I think the mojave will go Aquabats->Flogging->Titus on Friday. Just my opinion.

rage patton
01-27-2011, 12:32 AM
Then add Cut Copy and Crystal Castles to follow that... I wouldn't leave the mojave all day. But when would I have time to see The Black Keys and Chem Bros...

clumsy342
01-27-2011, 12:39 AM
not that i'm an authority on this, but overall, good call on getting acts on the appropriate stages. mine isn't too different from this. there's a couple things I see going down differently. but, in time, that will all be discussed. a lot.

i will say that even though it would be awesome, i think its unlikely that Cut Copy will get the outdoor sunset slot. my money is on Caifanes, Robyn, or Lauryn Hill.

and i wonder if they aren't just going to make the mojave something like:
Klaxons> YACHT> !!! > Cut Copy > Crystal Castles

rage patton
01-27-2011, 12:46 AM
and i wonder if they aren't just going to make the mojave something like:
Klaxons> YACHT> !!! > Cut Copy > Crystal Castles

I was thinking this too. Perhaps The Aquabats and Titus will go in the Gobi? But at the same time... since when has Coachella organized stages according to genre or similar artists? Aside from the mojave on Sunday in 09, usually they try to split up likes acts and spread them around stages. I could see Klaxons and YACHT in the Gobi, and !!! and Crystal Castles both on the Outdoor. Or perhaps Crystal Castles will be in the Sahara again? Maybe Cut Copy will get a Sahara slot too?

Possible Sahara?: Cut Copy->Boyz Noise->Chem Bros->Crystal Castles (to close)

clumsy342
01-27-2011, 12:56 AM
i'm glad you're on the same page as i am, josh. Sunday in 09 is exactly what I was thinking of. As far as the Sahara goes though, you're forgetting Magnetic Man and Sasha.

Agreed on Titus. I was thinking Aquabats mid-day Mojave? Like King Khan? but they could also be Gobi I suppose. It's just that the costumes alone could draw a crowd, haha.
