View Full Version : Who will be the surprise name of 2011?

TickleMeElmo
01-13-2011, 12:57 AM
Every year seems to have one or two artists nobody was thinking of on the lineup, one notably absent from predictions and fake posters. You know, the ones where we go, "Holy shit!" when we see the name since nobody saw it coming. For example (IMO)...

2010: Plastikman
2009: Leonard Cohen, Throbbing Gristle, Beirut
2008: Kraftwerk
2007: Happy Mondays?
2006: Daft Punk, Massive Attack

Who will be the surprise artist(s) of 2011?

Ummm... I think what you meant to write here was Rage Against The Machine. Also, The Jesus and Mary Chain.

2003 also had The Stooges. I have heard that was a pretty big surprise.

For 2011, Im hoping for Tom Waits.

You're right, JAMC was a surprise, forgot about that one. RATM sorta counts but I'm pretty sure rumors started surfacing a day or two before the lineup was released.

I thought it was weird they didn't play here during their reunion tour. I had to go up to San Francisco to see them. It's either Amanda hates LA or they will be at Coachella. Those are the only plausible options in my opinion. Either way, tons of fun and I support it.

I drove to the San Diego show, and she said that they weren't in LA just because of there not being enough time between the San Diego and San Francisco (she said, "I guess we could have played a show at nine in the morning") and she also said that they'd be back around. I think there's a good chance they'll play coachella

How was it? Worth the trip? IIRC, the setlist was baller.

Still holding out hope of seeing them do "truce" someday.

I caught their last LA show at the wiltern. Margaret cho was a surprise opener and she talked about anal bleaching. And the dolls covered two headed boy and fight for your right. As a huge fan of randomness, this was a good evening.

It was a lot of fun. They hadn't quite planned out the set list properly to end at midnight so they were winging it at parts. It was just a lot of random and improved fun. Pomplamoose opened and then Jason Webley came out and did The Drinking Song.

My only complaint was that it was a very cover heavy set.

I'm hoping for Sufjan. Of course lots of people ask for him, but to see his name on the poster would be really exciting. I also wonder how high/low his name would appear.

Front part of 4th line?

I am beyond jealous. They do a great "War Pigs" and "Cosmic Dancer?" Geez. I didn't even know they did a reunion tour. :( :( :(

Well according to a few posts above me... they will be around again. It was a really great show and a great way to bring in the New Year. Though if I wanted to complain about something... I wish the set list looked more like the one in New York for Halloween.

Suede and Big Audio Dynamite would be pretty great (on Monk's final list). I guess BAD wouldn't be a complete surprise based on that first article but all talk died down after that.

I was hoping for BAD this year but I think it will be next year since Mick has been busy touring Gorillaz.
