They still do to me. I kick it old school - which is ridiculous when you think about it. Release days lost their coolness when Napster came about. But I am officially not downoading shit anymore, I'm getting back to actually LOVING music, holding the LP/CD in my hand studying the artwork, reading the lyrics, etc...

Yeah - thanks for your part in killing the record industry.

Please don't respond to that as it was sort of a joke, well, sort of.

Warning - "old man" rant ahead.

Wonder what you would do without downloading? I remember what we did, we actually cherished music a bit more I think, more than the five mintues you prolly give it. Fact, when things in life come easy - it becomes harder to appreciate them.

Without downloading (illegal I'd say seeing what you listed) music would be less disposable to you. Back in the day (not that long ago) it meant something to track an indie or import down, you did your research and paid for the record and then treasured it, read the lyrics, gazed at the art, etc... Unlike a quick few strokes on the keyboard and you get some empty, hollow compressed file. Shameful really, even the tone of your post is saying, "look at me and look at all this music that I won't give 2 shits about 6 months from now". That's fucking bullshit, kiddo.

I've been looking at my Factory Records book thinking, we won't ever have this again, and that's a real shame. Lord knows they aren't going to do a Limewire or itunes, artwork retrospective 20 years from now.

Try investing a bit more in things, and you'll get more back.

Yeah - thanks for your part in killing the record industry, blah blah blah.

At first, I was going to take that first comment as a compliment, but then I thought I'd much rather help change the record industry rather than kill it, even though it has become quite the little bastard over the past few years.

What would I do without downloading? Not being such a huge music connoisseur that I am today, plus not knowing half the bands playing this year. I used to be way gungho about buying shit tons of cds, being an excited little shit about each newly found love I'd find. At that age, it was a slow progress. Then at some point, the internet came in play, where this progress then exploded. Downloading has opened up my tastes in music in a much bigger and faster way than buying cds ever did, with people giving recommendations or finding new artists on blogs that have a similiar taste.

You're right, music would be less disposable to me. But is that good for the artist? What would Wolf & Cub rather have? Me downloading there debut album (for free, of course) and seeing them live every chance I get, buying their merchandise and such.... or simply just not know who the fuck they are? I am sorry to say that I don't share the same memories of tracking down indie music like you did, that's just wasn't something I went through, or at least rarely went through. However, IMO, the art, liner notes and such are nice touches, but that's not the reason people buy cds.

My biggest reason for downloading music is I honestly don't see the point in funding a dying industry, at least not anymore. I don't want to help record labels continue outdated methods of distributed music and I especially don't want to help them sue their artist's fanbase for downloading music. I believe that with myself downloading music, along with millions of others, we are forcing record labels to change their ways. Do you think the iTunes Music Store would be as prevalent or even exist if it weren't for the likes of Napster or its other clones? There'd be no reason for them to change if the internet hadn't surfaced, business was too good for them. Now music is much easier to "legally" download thanks to those who dared to steal from the record labels. I personally do purchase a lot of music off of the iTunes Music Store whenever I'm on, even though the artist still does get screwed, making little profit from those sales.

I mostly still download music for free though. Why not keep the record labels on their feet?

btw, give my music plenty of listening time, thank you very much!

IMO, neither of them were mind blowing for me, each where pretty average. I think I like Air's new ablum better though...

And what the freck. Why doesnt any store have the new Amon Tobin album. pisses me off!

Don't buy the new Stooges album. It's so bad.

THE STOOGES
“The Weirdness”
(Virgin)

The old Stooges stomp from the late 1960s — a pounding, wah-wah-ing, cymbal-socking, garage-psychedelic blare — is back in force on “The Weirdness.” Nearly everything else has changed.

“The Weirdness” is the first full album that Iggy Pop has made with Ron Asheton on guitar, his brother, Scott, on drums and Steve Mackay on tenor saxophone since the Stooges’ 1970 “Fun House.”

The world now remembers the Stooges as a proto-punk band, and they reinforce that impression on “The Weirdness.” There’s only a hint of the deliberate, droning vamps that linked the group back to psychedelia, and the longest song runs just over four minutes.

Despite his reckless, self-immolating stage act with the Stooges, Iggy Pop, 59, survived the decades as a working rock star. Always a blunt songwriter, he has left behind the cocky nihilism of the original Stooges for a grown-up assortment of experience, irritation, leering, humor, calculated defiance and glimpses of burnout.

He’s not a street kid anymore; more than one song on the album revolves around money. Yet every so often he tries, a little desperately, to tweak taboos: “My idea of fun is killing everyone,” he rhymes.

After three decades of punk it’s harder to get a rise out of people with a bad attitude. But that Stooges stomp, primal and insolent, still sounds like trouble. JON PARELES

Well today I managed to download
1. Arcade Fire
2. Albert Hammond Jr
3. The Stooges

I thought The Stooges was going to suck because I still don't know if Iggy is still alive or it is just a clone. It sounds like how punk rock is supposed to sound. Not like the stuff that MTV.

After a second listen through Neon Bible is just amazing. Not life changing but amazing. ( ON second thought The Stooges is just average)

I got !!!, Arcade Fire, Air, and idlewild today.

All good, except ...

I put on Air's album, started doing some work, and the next thing I knew I was halfway through the disc without remembering anything I'd heard. That's never a good sign.

Yeah, the Air is kind of background music. Anyone know if Air is on sale cheap somewhere? I d/l'ed it months ago.

(I'm back posting by the way, the goal is to be more helpful from now on, less critical)

So, I made it through the new Air, its not as bad as people have made it out to be. Very Japanese influence on it, its a wee bit sleepy.

The Stooges however is pretty bad, and that is pretty sad.

AF gets better each time I hear it, I must admit though, I still prefer Funeral at this early stage. The Deluxe edition of Neon Bible is very nice, opt for that one if you can (11.99 at BB)

The best thing I bought yesterday though might be the ALBERT HAMMOND JR. - I'm super impressed with it, nice group of tunes, fuss-free production and the guy really can sing. He is also touring this month.

I forgot to get Air and I couldn't find Amon Tobin anywhere...

I think I might check out my local vinyl shop to see if they have any new stuff on vinyl...i like vinyl...it's perty

I hope I didn't imply that I think the new Air album is bad. I just think it's one of those things that, like you said, is a little sleepy, and, for me at least, requires concentrated listening. It's not as immediate as other artists (Arcade Fire, for instance), so if I get busy doing something else I lose track of it.

Does anyone know what the difference is? The deluxe has a larger box and I think the front was all funny and there were two little flip-book type things that weren't flip-books inside. Is that it?

I liked it from the start, actually. I'm not sure it's grown on me much.

It's not Funeral but that's not a bad thing.

i like the gloomy bent that AF has incorporated into their sound.

yeah. i didnt catch any of the "magic" associated with funeral. i interpreted it as hype. quite possibly the most overhyped album of all time. in the end, i think only three or so songs are special.

i like many more already with neon bible.

i find both albums to be "special" in their own way. let's all agree that both albums are good and that Arcade Fire is one of the best, if not THE best, bands around.

Yeah pretty much - I really like the linticular (magic motion) cover of the deluxe box though, if anyone saw the recent live shows, its like having the animated neon bible sign (that hung over the stage) on your cd - cool indeed.

It was only 2.00 more at Best Buy, over the regular version.

Its the exact opposite for me. Neon Bible sounds very Bright Eyesish (IMO), and Bright Eyes can be very hit or miss. Therefore, Neon Bible gets the "average" rating for me.

____________

Did a little searching around this morning and finally was able to find Amon Tobin's new album The Foley Room. I think Pitchfork nailed it on the head, 8.1/10. Something I wouldnt recommend for people without a open taste in music. And for what its worth, Its my favorite release this year, thus far. Im curious to see the DVD that comes along with it, I heard he makes fun of Paul Oakenfold in it.:D
