TomAz

also, the New Yorker had a very nice article on the AF week before last. It doesn't appear to be on their website anymore though.

Amy some day a group of us are going to kidnap you and lock you in a room and make you listen to Bob Dylan, Neil Young, the Arcade Fire, Okkervil River, and whatever other bad singers we can think of, until you crack under the pressure and foreswear your Celine Dion leanings.

Count me out. She would scratch and bite.

no no no no this is nothing like that, it's more like an intervention. "kidnap" was a poor choice of words.

I don't like Celine Dion. Who the fuck ever said that bitch can sing?

TomAz
03-05-2007, 01:02 PM
Celine Dion is the Prosecution's star witness in the case of People With Technical Talent and No Soul.

amyzzz
03-05-2007, 01:11 PM
I don't like bands that have technical talent and no soul. And I do actually like bands who don't have the best of singers, but those bands need to have some quality that overrides the lack of good singing. This is all subjective anyway.

TomAz
03-05-2007, 01:12 PM
Well by that logic it's subjective to say that Dickens was a better author than Seuss.

amyzzz
03-05-2007, 01:13 PM
I don't really think you can go by logic in deciding what bands you like best. It's music--it's emotional.

TomAz
03-05-2007, 01:15 PM
Yes but it's not purely emotional. It is possible to have standards.

amyzzz
03-05-2007, 01:18 PM
I fucking HATE Dickens. Seuss, however, I probably read once or twice a week (kids).

TomAz
03-05-2007, 01:20 PM
So are you saying Dickens was a lousy writer? An untalented novelist? or are you saying literature is also emotional and it's impossible to call one writer better than the other?

I thought you weren't baiting me this month?

TomAz
03-05-2007, 01:28 PM
I'm not baiting you. I'm having a serious philosophical discussion with you.

I've come across it because of the name being close to my favorite band's name. I haven't listened to it.

TomAz

OK C DUB YA...here's the thing. Many of us live to derail/hijack threads. It's fun...because usually talking about stupid stuff that is beside the point is more amusing. But that does not mean you can't or shouldn't continue to forge ahead with the intent of your thread. You are giving up too easily. Throwing your hands up like there's nothing you can do.

You want the thread back? You BRING IT BACK, BITCH! Tenacity is the key. Are you a tiger or a bunny?

I'd say, at least when it comes to literature, there are some authors who are just "better" than others. I feel I can objectively say that Joseph Heller is a better author than Danielle Steel, even though she's "one of the most widely read authors in history" according to Wiki. There are certain criteria this is based on, certain skills. Correct and well-integrated use of irony is one.
