View Full Version : Bands which (sadly) will most likely never play Coachella

These artists wouldn't pull many sales by being on the poster, but they would definitely bring something special to the table:

Ben Frost
Tim Hecker
Dosh
Talk Talk (performing Spirit of Eden + Laughing Stock)
Snd
Merzbow
Sunn O)))
Urinals
Emeralds
Lucky Dragons
R Kelly
Tearist

Out of all of those, Sunn might have had a chance last year after releasing Monoliths and Dimensions, and Snd might have a chance this year.

I think every year someone suggests Merzbow as a joke. I'm just saying: when the world ends during the Sunday headliner, 2012, Merzbow should be on the main stage.

The experimental or noisy/droney acts at Coachella are funny. The hype for Throbbing Gristle was a 10, but the crowd was a 2 (in terms of size). People were walking away just totally confused.
I didn't expect people to be as into My Bloody Valentine as they were, but that set drew a lot of people.

And yes: the fact that bands like this have played the fest is good enough reason for me to buy tickets before the lineup is announced.

Yeah I can't see Quik being too relevant with the Coachella crowd, but the Quik/Kurupt collab album seemed to do alright with the hipsters/pitchfork at least. Plus it would be pretty amazing. Really hoping Quik is still doing his Key Club shows by the time I get over to the US in April.

I really can't see The-Dream or Wacka Flocka playing, they seem like too much of a risk for Coachella, but who knows....

Will be extremely happy if Actress/Mount Kimbie/Shed or John Roberts play but I swear Coachella have quite terrible taste when it comes to dance/electronic acts (Boys Noize/Steve Aioki/Bloody Beetroots/Benny Bennasi/The Proxy etc.) I rarely see much cool underground dance acts on the bill.

What do you mean by relevant? Sly Stone (bad example?) is far from relevant, but he already put in his stripes and he is still welcome to play at Coachella. I dont see why the same cant be done for Quik.

Sure Dj Quik isnt cranking out tunes right now, but he still mixes albums for a lot of relevant artists (not just hip-hop artists at that). Not only that but he still does production, and Quik production is the best production in hip-hop IMO. If he did play, I have no doubt he would get a great crowd and a great vibe going. He is a perfect hip-hop artists for Coachella.

Despite his current state, Sly Stone's work is still a PILLAR of R&B music history, not to mention 60's music. He was also one of the only people who could blow Hendrix off the stage.

Dre, Quik, and Daz are pretty much the artists responsible for establishing what became westcoast hip-hop. Dre gets all the credit, but thats just because Quik and Daz were more of "behind the scenes" kind of people. Quiks has produced and still produces for tons of people in the rap scene, from 2pac too Young Joc.

If you listened to Quiks raps, he always talked about how he tries to avoid fame and being in the spotlight.

Edit: Also, being part of the original Deathrow family makes you as established as anyone else in my book.

I started a Monotonix thread once upon a time. Realized they might have trouble getting out into the audience given the barriers at Coach. I love those dude a lot, but think their music alone is just ok. They gotta crowd surf the drummer while he's playing his drum set. That's when shit gets real.

Jamiroquai. They just released a new album (although it's still import only in the U S), so I was hoping they'd play thisyear. They haven't toured here since 05. I get the feeling they never will :(

:( I would love to see jamiroquai

Of course Primus would play... Why not?! Les Claypool played a few yrs ago and his line for the meet and greet was huge.

No, a shadow of The Strokes played last year. The Strokes 2001-2006>The Strokes 2011. Damn you, nostalgia.

Old Strokes > New Strokes. Both are amazing though.

Something inside me wants to hate on you for obviously spending so much time on that sig. But...you actually got that to look pretty awesome. The rasta 420 is overkill, but the font choices make it seem like, as the elephant in the room, it deserves a big, irie san serif. No fear.

Someone here asked him, and he's nervous about playing big, outdoor gigs and fests. He only played Primavera on his last tour, and that was in their seated, indoor theater. Which was so fucking perfect.

You'd be amazed at what artists spill in regards to this stuff.

Damn, that's unfortunate... :/ I would've loved to see him at Coachella sometime. Oh well.

Indeed. That Age of Adz should would have been a blast closing out the Mojave like Fever Ray. Would have had to lose the scrim, probably, but that grand spectacle plus all the hallucinogenics in the crowd would have been incredible.

The Strokes played Coachella in 2002. My first Coachella I attended. They were just okay.

edit: Shit, it's been 10 years since my first Coachella.
