I'm currently putting togeather a mix CD for my nephew who is only 4 (almost 5) of music that is kinda of in the vein of childerens songs but by adult artists. Think simple stuff, i.e. Peaches by The Presidents of the United States of America, It's the End of the World as We Know it by R.E.M., Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robts Pt. 1 by Flaming Lips, Favorite Colour by Tokyo Police Club, ect. Things that are really simple but at the same time not really catered to kids. Any ideas?

I believe that it was written about a girl that Chris Ballew liked and he wrote it underneath a Peach tree. But even if it was the kids 5, he won't understand that.

this isn't exactly what you are after, but dimension mix may be of interest. it was a charity/tribute cd of indie bands covering kids songs. they aren't traditional kids songs (i.e. not nursery rhymes and junk), but they were songs written for kids.

this song was gold when I was in 1st/2nd grade. why exactly would this be such a terrible song for a child to hear?

Kids understand titty references. I remember giggling in Sunday School over the Song of Solomon.

Sesame Street and Pancake Mountain are masters of this noble art, and it might be worth checking out their stuff on Youtube for further inspiration. eg:
