As far as upscale hotel parties, that passport to the world at the Westin St Francis is the best I believe, though I gather that is hardly anyone's scene on here.

Icee Hot's doing Ramadanman and Bok Bok based on an e-mail I just got.

I'm going to a house party, none of this stuff seems too exciting to me honestly. In a twisted alternate reality I'd like to go to the Steve Aoki thing but, alas, I have no access to such a place.

dude, the setup for BOC starts the night before. The whole block is being sectioned off and gated, entry line gates need to be set up, art, art cars, bars, etc.

Especially when Mighty said on Tuesday of this week that they're still working on it.

jackstraw94086
12-02-2010, 02:21 PM
When did Mighty say this? Is this straight from Derek or someone else? The only thing they've said in the past is they might do another little roller disco thing but they don't have the time to do a huge NYE blast, with a headliner, and stay open significantly past midnight. The place will be set up for BOC. This aint rocket surgery.

fikus222
12-02-2010, 02:26 PM
I asked on Face Book and either Carey or Sean responded on Tuesday and said that they were still working on it.

jackstraw94086
12-02-2010, 02:37 PM
OK but Sean's own staff, the BOC staff, and just about everyone else is in the dark about it so it's likely not going be something huge. Probably something just enough to make a few bucks and then close no later than 2AM.

Facebook message from mighty:

Subject: Just Announced - NYE 2011 @ Mighty - FREE PARTY!!!!!

Alright everyone, a lot of you have been asking what we're going to do on NYE. Well spread the word - we are doing something unprecedented. For this special date, the infamous 1984 80's party which occurs every Thursday at the Cat Club is taking over the decks! In appreciation for the 12 years of your support enjoyed by 1984, we're throwing a free NYE party complete with 2 rooms of 80's music all night long! New Wave City's Skip will also be rockin' the Mighty sound system along with Dangerous Dan, Raphael Fierro, and Mark Andrus.

Complimentary champagne at midnight, and state of the art visuals and video mixing all night! Don't miss this epic event!

nothing special esp. with 80s music, but free champagne (which is sooo true, i snagged a whole bottle nye 09) and a free party isn't bad.

flying early NYD? damn. I flew late NYD once and really, really regretted it.

from talking to BoC peeps here and there I get the sense it is more people who want to skip the crowds and madness of NYE, sleep instead, and get up early the next day to party after the crowds have gone home and passed out. not so much an afterparty from actual NYE celebrations. though I suppose it could work that way.

Good to know. Also, Julius Papp is spinning from 9 to 2 am in something called the ufunk lounge at the Farina show. "An exclusive set, traveling through the funk, jazz, disco, downtempo continuum" - sounds like a good place to begin the evening and an occasional breather.

Are you guys expecting a big line to get into this place? Do I need to get there early or would 10:30 be cool? I haven't done a NYE in SF, so I don't know what kind of potential clusterfuck I'm getting involved in.

Long line at this? Methinks not. However, I am perfectly fine with 10ish (earlier or later) as a guideline. You? And what are Salah's thoughts on the matter?

No idea, we haven't talked about it. I think 10:30 would be fine, but let's see what we think once they post the set times. It would be nice to look around before things get too crazy. (There is a bunch of art and stuff to see).

Hunting hunting....

You're kidding, right? Furthur is playing the 30th and 31st, which means the park (sketchy, I know) is already full of psychedelic drugs. Just wander in and doses will find you. Or show up to the venue before doors on the 30th and score as much as you can afford.

Was thinking more like 9:30 so we can all get to our respective locations on time. Zeitgeist - 21st Amendment - Tres Agave?

chiapet
12-28-2010, 09:07 AM
Where's everyone going location wise? I think the Farina show is Howard & 5th, SOD is Brannan & 8th. Cara is going to Public Works, by zg. I'd suggest NOT zg, as much as I love the place, since it's too dependent on weather.

I don't mind traveling a bit though, since everyone elses location seem a bit more centrally located.

The Mark Farina party is at Factory, which is on Harrison between 2nd and 1st St.

Erika and I are riding BART into SF, so a meet-up place that is walkable from a station would be nice.

12-28-2010, 09:43 AM
Oh yea, I was way off. Something near BART would be good. I don't have any suggestions though. The places I know of, I think will be either too packed or too awful on NYE.

if you don't mind my two cents, avoid Tres Agaves unless you like crowded corporate scenes with overpriced, pedestrian fare (food and drink). Bloodhound is pretty great. Really good choice of liquor/beer (great bourbon choices), a pool table and decent jukebox. 21st Amendment would normally be a viable option, but it's likely going to be really hard to find a spot unless you end up eating there.

chiapet
12-28-2010, 07:35 PM
Yea we're having a side discussion about that. I am certain that 21st will not have bar space and will not allow people to sit at tables unless they order entrees. Plus any place like that is normally fine, but on 'event' nights (whether NYE, Giants game nights, etc), both places tend to become filled with really douchey yuppie types.

I think we're leaning towards Bloodhound.

Will you be joining us for a pre-game drink, Drew?

really wish I didn't need to sleep. does anyone know what time BoC usually wraps up?

No idea. But you also probably just got the email that an-ten-nae is doing something at 103 Harriet later that night. No lineup to be announced until Saturday though. I might end up doing something Saturday night if I'm not in any shape to go out during the day.

It was good to see you and your lady, also, Eric.

I agree about the Factory, it was just ok. The set up was strange, the crowd was a little weird, and the music was decent but not amazing. I actually liked Julius Papp in the other room better since he played some old school jams.

I think that since that place isn't a full time club, there was no identity or vibe with the crowd.

The sound was good though.

Dos Equis as the only beer options was slightly disappointing, but it could have been worse, it could have been Corona only.

And Thanks again Sublime for posting the half off tickets to the show. If I had paid, $50, or $100 - which is what they were charging at the door, I would have been pissed.

Dresden Dolls on NYE was really incredible!
Right before midnight they stopped to do the countdown. Where they did a balloon drop. FUCKING TONS OF BALLOONS, which tons of people started popping during/after Auld Lang Syne.
07WpxVmEHwg
Then, they covered U2's "New Year's Day" with so much confetti, which was one of my favorite parts. It was magical. Way better than my east coast tradition of watching the ball drop live.
UVvpuarJEtQ
After that. They had Pomplamoose come out and Jason Webley and random people with bottles of booze and they covered Beastie Boys "Fight For Your Right".
c4vdf1zElsw

Another really fantastic cover was a obscure song "I Am The Condor" by Double Dong (which is really quite horrible... here is the original http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNFJ1ODQUGo). It was pretty erotic.

But for those of us who really enjoy a really good sounding system... :'(

The OT sound really was pretty bad, but it's a lobby and what can ya do. You won't see a scene like that in most clubs.

And to be fair to SoD, Modeselektor is notorious for sound issues. They have one of the most complicated setups in the business (perhaps less so than say, Coldcut, but probably far less professional too).

I've heard them cut out at three different shows, it's getting harder to believe that it's always the venue.

chiapet
01-04-2011, 02:42 PM
Right, I was not expecting great sound at the Opulent Temple based on what/where it was. (I thought it was better than last year, but then I didn't spend much time in that area last year - was the Do Lab, right?) But I was being genuine in asking whether everything across the venue had poor sound or if it was a specific stage. I didn't really see anything at the stage on the end (east?) and I wasn't at west long enough / paying enough attention to get a good feel for it.

Edited to be clear: I'm not challenging anyone on this, I am just interested in your opinions. I was completely out of it, and also have slight hearing problems so when I don't have a pristine environment for listening, some sound problems can be lost on me. I guess I'm wondering how bad it could have been that I didn't notice it. I don't think I was that fucked up.
