PORTISHEAD confirm "I'LL BE YOUR MIRROR" Curated by PORTISHEAD & ATP
23rd & 24th July - Alexandra Palace, London
On the weekend of 23rd and 24th July 2011 at Alexandra Palace, London, All Tomorrow's Parties will present the first UK I'll Be Your Mirror event, which will be curated by Portishead and ATP.
Acting as sister event to ATP Festivals and named after the b-side to The Velvet Underground's original All Tomorrow's Parties 7" single, I'll Be Your Mirror will be a new series of artist curated music, film and art events taking place in cities worldwide.
Portishead will headline both nights, with a different supporting line-up joining them each day. Tickets will cost £59 per day with weekend tickets priced at £100. At this point these are the only UK shows Portishead plan to play in 2011, and you can get early bird tickets at reduced prices here

RE: airfares...don't count on the prices dropping, unless OPEC increases production-which they are saying they won't. Fuel may be back up to $100 a barrel in January/February, which means higher air tickets, especially for summer Euro destinations. I just checked our site; about $1025 without fees to both LHR and LGW. Flying into DUB was a couple hundy more.
I'd seriously suggest to the PHX peeps to keep an eye on British Airways. They fly a daily non-stop flight from PHX to LHR and right now, the price is comparable. The PHL-LHR or CLT-LGW flight is brutal because it's just barely enough time in the air overnight to go to sleep. A co-worker of mine in London regularly flies on BA instead of us when she has to come to PHX because she can actually get some sleep.
Plus, BA is a pretty damn good airline.

Noted thanks for the continued advice Jen! I just took a stab at the old fashioned name your own price priceline. I bid fairly low at $800 then again at $850.
They offered me a ticket for $1188. Not much of a difference at all from any published fairs in fact they even state it's only $13 cheaper than any published fairs that they can find. So it appears for now the magic number with taxes and fees is around $1200. I've also been searching with date flexibility.

Well, yeah. But the sleep thing is a big bonus. It leaves here around 630PM and then arrives in London around 1 in the afternoon (so you're in the air like 9.5 hours).
When you have to stop on the east coast, you leave around 10 at night and then arrive in london at around 10am, so you're only in the air for 6-7 hours. by the time they serve you your meal and you get settled in, you only have a few hours to sleep.

I'm waiting to hear back from my boss if I can have the time off for this. Her sister from Israel will be here in July, but she's not sure when. I will be a very unhappy camper if she won't let me off.
A shitty hotel is still better than a hostel.
How much better? If I do this, I'm going to have to do it as cheaply as possible so I was thinking hostel (except for the nights of the festival, when I'll stay with Ivy in her hotel). I've never traveled internationally, though I stayed in a hostel in San Diego once and had no problems. It seems like hostel quality differs widely, so I'm doing as much research as I can, but I don't want to end up getting gang-raped by cockroaches or something.

Just read reviews at hostelworld or some similar sights. I have stayed at hostels in Dublin, London, Amsterdam, Prague and Rome. Some things you want to consider when booking a hostel.
*Number of beds per room
*private rooms are sometimes just as much as a cheap hotel room.
*private or shared bathroom/shower
*kitchen or not (if you are staying a bit, grocery shopping will save you cash
*location
*luggage room or lockers
*it's going to be full of college kids backpacking and partying
Each hostel was different than the next. I stayed in Dublin for about $15 a night at a couple of different hostels that were decent and clean but I was sharing a room with about 8 bunk beds and 15 other people.
In amsterdam we had a private room. It was super tiny but in a fantastic location and only came out to be about $38/per night. Just look over everything really clear and if you are not wanting to share a room with a bunch of strangers you might be better off in a cheap hotel. I'm going the hotel route this time because it's not a huge difference in price.
Here is the one I stayed at in London. It was just one night and a younger crowd. It's attached to a club but it's walking distance to things like the London Bridge and Big Ben...

I always stay at hostels. Your mileage will vary wildly. I will do full writeups of my london hostel experiences when I have all mod cons.
Never had to deal with roachy rapetasticness, though.

Thanks for the tips.
I will pretty much just be sleeping there, so it's not like I need a nice room to hang out in, and I think I'd be okay sharing a room with strangers (as long as I feel safe about securing my things there). I figure that with some earplugs, I'll be fine.
And about the roach fear - one of my old teachers told me about a hostel she stayed in in Hungary or something that was crawling with them at night (like, to the extent that she was afraid to sleep, but also afraid to even get off of the bed to leave the room because they were all over the floor), so the roach/hostel association has kind of stuck.

Right. All that's really necessary are a bed, locker, and decent showers. Showers can be surprisingly dodgy (group showers, showers with only scorching hot water, showers with no seats, shelves, hooks to put your stuff on, etc.).

For reference, every hostel I've ever booked in London:
St Christopher’s Shepherds Bush
Pros:
cheap (£10.90 a night for a bed in an 8-person dorm is a bargain)
convenience and grocery stores within a block
across the street from the underground
bar downstairs
Cons:
Showers! Each stall had a puddle of scummy water that never drained, floor blackened with mold and dead skin, no control over water temperature (button releases scalding hot only, which makes the whole place a sauna if it's summer), nowhere to place your clothes or toiletries inside or outside the stalls unless you have a waterproof bag and put it on the floor).
Got kicked out of the room with wi-fi, games, couches, tv, etc so the hostel could have some kind of meetings there a couple times while trying to work or get directions.
no kitchen, because they want you to eat at the expensive restaurant
This was not a con for me at all, but it might be for others: not central to popular tourist attractions.
Smart Russell Square
Pros:
CHEAP! £8.94 for a bed in a 24 person dorm. Yes, 24.
Close to Underground, Tesco, and a tasty Dutch Pankake house.
The beds are pod-like and include privacy curtains, which make being in a room with 24 people easier. There are smaller rooms available, but I liked the novelty of it.
Cons:
dirty dorms (someone's rancid, expired juice and yogurt was in my locker waiting for me upon arrival)
Massive. Expect to get lost when going to the shower, bathroom, doing laundry, finding your room, etc. Not a significant issue to me personally, but I thought I'd list it.
Dorms get claustrophobic and hot as hell.
Lockers cost money (they use electronic locks).
Piccadilly Backpackers
Pros:
As centrally located to London's biggest tourist traps as you can get.
Tesco nearby, along with a decent pub and a Hummus Bros.
Hot breakfast available. Quality ranges from pretty good to pretty bad, prices a little high but reasonably so. A cromulent option if you're tired of the usual cereal and wonderbread and too tired/hung over to cook.
Near the Underground.
Cons:
Rates vary significantly. £12-22 a night.
dirty
Some really awful restaurants nearby as well.
Some really rude staff.
One of the only hostels to have an elevator. It's old, tiny, and the hostel is huge. Also, expect to get stuck at least once on it.
No sink in the dorm. Pretty much every other hostel had this.
Smallest hostel lockers I've ever seen.
Astor Victoria
Pros:
Quiet
It's a 15 minute walk to Victoria station, so it's a good place to stay if you're just in London for the night before going elsewhere and have to be awake early in the morning.
Cons:
Quiet
Area is pretty residential, so forget about drinking or even grabbing some dinner.
£16.00 for a bed in an 8-person dorm isn't bad and comparable to rates in the US, but it's not the cheapest option out there.
Easy to miss. I walked right past it without noticing and ended up at Hyde Park circle. That was not a good day.
Wi-fi ain't free.
And some not in London:
St Christopher's at The Palace Hotel - Brighton
Pros:
fun bar downstairs
across the street from the rock beach
Cons:
Ensuite bathrooms, but bad design. Shower water sprays all over the place and the floor is perpetually soaked. So if you have to shit in the middle of the night, wear shoes.
Cheapest rate I got was £18.00 a night.
Kipps Hostel - Brighton
Pros:
Friendly, helpful staff
My rate in a 10 person dorm (ensuite) was $19.51
Clean
Ensuite shower was everything a shower should be.
Within walking distance of everything.
Bar downstairs (ended up going to the one at the other hostel, though)
Cons:
None. Pretty much perfect. I think they charged 2 quid for continental breakfast, but there are a lot of places between the hostel and train station for a cheap hot meal, so fuck it.
Central Backpackers - Oxford
Pros:
Cheap beer was available for the World Cup. Don't know if this is an everyday thing.
Close to the train station
Close to everything, actually.
Clean
Cons:
Comparatively expensive at £20 a night.
A couple things to keep in mind. First, nobody gives you a towel like they do at American hostels. So bring a towel and always do your showering the night before going to your next destination because if you do it in the morning, you'll be stuck hauling a wet towel, which will smell awful by the time you liberate it from it's bag in your luggage. Also, most hostels seem to not have ensuite bathrooms, but nearly all of them have a sink, so you can still brush your teeth, wash hands, deal with contacts.

Not saying hostels are better of course, but one thing that hostels do have over hotels is a laundry room. Many hotels don't have laundry facilities but almost all hostels do. This is a huge plus, especially if you're travelling for a while and going to a festival where you get your clothes full of dirt and mud (aka Glastonbury).

Also, I guess I need to look into PJ Harvey. I don't think I have ever listened to anything by her.
And Liars are fantastic live. I have seen them 4 times. 3 times in an outdoor setting, 1 time at a small club. The 3 times Outdoors were pretty good, but when I saw them at tiny venue earlier this year, it was incredible. It was eerie, frantic, high energy, and, at times, quite sexy. Liars are one of the big draws for me here.

So now with these additions, I'm kinda excited for what Portishead has in mind for ATP NJ.......I mean with Liars, Swans, Godspeed, Grinderman, PJ Harvery and etc, it's already better than what Coachella has this year. I hate not being overseas sometimes during summer....
Today ATP are very pleased to announce the addition of two stunning new performances to the Sunday 24th line-up: the legendary Godspeed You! Black Emperor who only recently reformed for a string of rapturously received sold out shows, and also a special collaboration between graphic novelist Alan Moore (Watchmen, From Hell) and musician Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))), KTL) who will respectively provide text and guitar for an expanded soundtracking of Harry Smith's 1962 animated alchemical film "Heaven & Earth Magic".
We are also pleased to confirm the first of the films that will be screened in the cinema at the event. Heading the list we are excited to present the acclaimed Submarine which will be introduced by writer/director Richard Ayoade (Saturday 23rd) and we are also thrilled to invite Mark Cousins who will introduce his documentary feature The First Movie (Sunday 24th). Other films confirmed include The Treasures of Long Gone John and three films by John Minton - Field, Jock Scott and September, with a full schedule and more films to be confirmed shortly.

Yesterday was pretty good, musicwise - but the organisation was fucking terrible. Random one way systems, huge queues for toilets and food (for the stalls that hadn't closed early because they had none left). Luckily you could leave the venue, as it was your only real choice for grabbing a snack without losing an hour of your day.
Thought Forms, a late addition, were my set of the day - closely followed by Company Flow and Factory Floor. Portishead were pretty damn excellent too. Nice to see Beth chill out a bit - running around the pit and high fiving everyone at the rail.

I'm going to go see the first 15 minutes of Moore & O'Malley, then gonna head over to get a good spot for Grinderman. I'll let you know how it is.
Also, Portishead were amazing last night. Far and beyond the best act of the day. Lots of good acts though. It has a cool vibe as well... but yesterday wasn't organized very well. There was kind of a one way flow you had to follow and it takes and unnecessarily long time to get from room to room. Hopefully they fix that up today.
All in all though, yesterday was a fun day and I enjoyed myself quite a bit. Today was the day I was looking forward to the most, so I am pretty stoked.
