Help me out here guys. I'm starting to really get into EDM, and so far I've really enjoyed all the old house music I've heard. I'm looking for suggestions of some older house, techno, trance, DnB and Jungle artists/albums that i should check out

The title may create confusion for people who think it's about the show. I like the show as well, but I don't need advice on delving further into that.

House is the EDM equivalent of "Rock". It's so diverse that you'd never make headway on it as a whole, but finding out will forever be fun.

vinyl's right. Chicago is pretty much the world capital for old school house. You'd probably love Derrick Carter (but probably missed his set at coachella '06). I personally don't care for the old school, but can appreciate it's qualities. After experiencing the breaks scene in SF for several years I've learned to respect house's unpretentiousness.

The EDM scene is actually about to experience a house revival. in recent years europe had been diverging, with UK leading the way with big beat , later spawning breakbeat and Germany going minimal. At this point I think both scenes are starting to get over it. popular breaks tracks are starting to meld into a more 4X4 type thing and the minimal scene in germany is perhaps starting to realize they'd rather have fun again. The result of both are techier version of house (althought the current use of the term "tech house" refers to mostly crap). my last lloacheca mix was mostly house. I'll see if I can dig up the tracklist.

With the proliferation of production software like ableton and reason, shit is exploding quick. That means a bunch of complete shit out there, but it also means cool shit from people we may have never gotten a chance to see.
Sifting through DJ websites is almost the new crate digging. It's exciting times.

For old house you might want to check out this recent compilation cd The Sound Of Chicago House 1985 - 2006 (http://www.discogs.com/release/866209)

Older techno I can only recommend not so recent compilations: Retro Techno - Detroit Definitive (http://www.discogs.com/release/44984) and Relics - A Transmat Compilation (http://www.discogs.com/release/4729)

Enjoy

Thanks. Ironic. Those are the compilations that I got that got me into those respective sounds. I'm actually looking for advice on Acid House, DnB, Jungle. Post-house stuff, basically. I don't know where to go.

the problem with genres like that is that there is rarely standout artists that define them. EDM is not really album based. It's mainly 12" singles and remixes.

the best thing to do is probably mention an artist and challenge people to name similar artists. Other things you can do are find compilations that particular tracks or artists you like appear on, then rape them, or you can look at the label that your favorite artists are on and see who else is on it. EDM labels are generally pretty small and genre specific.

I would say Abe Duque for Phuture. Perhaps even Lee Coombs which last compilation The land of the smokey snake (2006) is more acid house then breakbeat.

Perhaps an idea is to check out the playlists of danceshows to get new names. (BBC radio 1 dance, Kiss100, Ministry Of Sound, Thump Funk).

I was going to make this thread, but I thought I'd search first. And considering half this thread is about the TV show, it's getting a bump. Recommend some essential classic house records, compilations, singles, artists with more than two singles worth delving into, revival tracks, crossovers, internet radio shows, post mixes & YouTube videos, whatever. Things I'm already aware of: Warp's Influences 10+1 comp, Mr. Fingers/Larry Heard, Frankie Knuckles, Cajual, Green Velvet, Felix Da Housecat, electro/blog/Ed Banger-house.

Guerrilla Records was a great UK progressive house label in the early to mid 90s. Track down this album...

Also do research on Hardkiss Records and Suburn Records. Both are essential San Fransisco Progressive house/breaks from the 90s.

I feel a full on obsession coming on, and would like to see this thread get a little love. I've been digging on Masters At Work lately (always knew them by name but could never find the compilations recommended to me online until I got a 4 disc thing recently).

i like something with more substance. not the kind of music you skip to, rather the kind of music that makes you get down.

if the music can start going in this direction, i would consider it a good start

Having a little trouble understanding why the Robert Owens and Moodymann tracks strike you as superficial. These records destroy dancefloors, and for good reason. I can think of any number of adjectives one might use to describe them - superficial is not one of them (certainly not in relation to that Miguel Migs track).

Embarrasing. It's been said before, but screw it, I'm saying it now - Goldenvoice really needs to quit booking this sort of trash. It diminishes the festival and their absence wouldn't effect the bottom line in the slightest - barring a farcical trio of headliners, a sell-out is a safe-bet. This clown, along with a number of other clowns (most of whom Goldenvoice has sought fit to invite in recent years), represent the absolute worst of EDM. Fuck em.

Here is Steve Angello defending his DJing skills and his right to be douchebag.

With recent discussions on a forum with regards to one of Steve’s DJ sets in Brazil (read more here) Steve has issued the following statement on Twitter:

I love the fact that ppl don’t think I am mixing cause I’m not wearing headphones all the time .. I play 160 gigs a year , and have dj’d for 15 years. Just cause someone is doing something different doesn’t mean that its fake .. I think all of u who think so should stop being such haters and come see for yourself .. I play the same records everyday I don’t need to listen to what I do .. Its my party trick and respect that instead of hating on it. If u doubt it come in the booth or try do it yourself before u judge !! Ok .. Nuff said .. SA

For all you ppl out there who wanna know how its done .. Lemme tell u .., dj for 5 hours a day for 10 years. When you have done that .. Start touring , playing 4-6 gigs a week for another 5 years… After that try play on the CDj’s. U see the BPM on the right side of the display , u have a pitch and easy way to count the BPM is by looking on the cd u gonna mix in , if 1 bpm is the dif just adjust the pitch to +0.8 or -0.8 depending on if its slower or faster .. After that 0.8 either way is one BPM. So 1.6 is 2 , 2.4 is 3 , 3.20 is 4 and 4 is 5. Ok .. Learn the trax u play and enjoy.

OMG I can’t believe I care about haters.. But u know what when you work your ass off and ppl accuse you for being fake. U get upset ..

I just reviewed the clip everyone is talking about . so let me explain , when i do some festivals i have a team there that does all my pyro , fx and co2´s , + most of them have a synced "fireworks show" that is synced to the music so nothing goes wrong for the fireworks show since timing everything is extremely hard for them , so i have a medley mix i close with so they can have everything synced , most big festivals have that and its nothing new , as soon as your closing under a big finale you have that going on.. does that explain it ? i know some of you will still hate cause of the fact that hating if your game but i have now explained it and take it or leave it . i don't have to prove myself that i´m able to mix i´ve done that my whole life and spend more time mixing then with my daughter so thats it . hope some of you understand , if you don't sorry about that .. Sexy synth mastermind Juan Maclean is back with a brand new, digital only, album this Fall. DFA Records will release Everybody Get Close November 6th, a compilation of previous work and remixes. Of the eleven tracks, five of them are from the previously tour only Find a Way EP, but included in the new material is the title track “Everybody Get Close.” It’s a return to some of Maclean’s earlier roots, drenched in vocoded vocals and trippy synthesizers. Cut Copy also lend a hand with their remix of Maclean’s incredible track “Happy House,” previously released on a digital version of the 12″. Maclean and now fulltime band member Nancy Whang are at work on a completely new album as well, and along with Everybody Get Close and Maclean’s side project Peach Melba, it’s been a busy year for the disco house revivalist. If you like extra deep, dark, oddball house in the Theo Parrish vein, you owe it to yourself to check out DJ Qu's Gymnastics. It's thoroughly fantastic and manages the rare trick of being a house album that doesn't quite sound like anything else out there. Here's one of those album sampler videos that gives you like 30 seconds from each track:

See Droog in the Heine tent from 5-7 on Saturday.

Sammy Bliss/Worthy/Christian Martin in the Do-Lab for some booty-house (I don't think their set times are out yet). Other than that for decent house offerings, I have no recommendations whatsoever. I don't even think I'll give Jacques Lu Cont a chance.

I do not have any recommendations that cater to that specific sound, however, I do want to come in here and reiterate what I hope I've said elsewhere:

Midland's Placement EP is the absolute shit.

Locked Groove's Rooted also remains my top favorite release of the year so far. Not totally appropriate in the house category, I suppose, but it's a pretty varied 3 track series.

To be honest I'm not very knowledgeable about what's been released in the house world lately. And as much fun as the whole deep house Soul Clap/Hot Creations/ Culprit/who else? That entire sound....I fucking love it and I loved it so much in 2011 but I'm ready to be taken elsewhere.

You guys. Chez and Cajmere free monthly event at the Smart Bar in Chicago. SOMUCHFUCKINGFUN. It was criminally underattended, but I guess that's to be expected on a Wednesday night. The flipside of that is that everyone that came out was a true devotee, no dancefloor tourists like you get on the weekend killing the vibe by standing on the dancefloor or making out with their significant other while they slow grind to techno. Just people letting totally loose and having an amazing time, creating an energy that was palpable in the air. A couple of weirdos (one guy rocking some bongos all night, playing with the beat, that only actually got annoying towards the end), a couple of old school looking cats, and generally a pretty diverse crowd for never really being more than 40 or 50 people. Chez and Cajmere did a back to back set, switching off on the deck every couple of minutes, I only caught 2 hours, but I think they did 4 total. It just seemed like it was some intimate little house party they were throwing for their friends. No bullshit, no pretense (well maybe just a little), just two veterans playing some of the best records in their bags for the hell of it. It was great seeing them whispering in each others ears and laughing and hugging people around them and doing goofy dances and shit.

And of course, the music was fantastic. Really great banging house the whole night. Non-stop party jams. They definitely know how to play to their audience. Chez especially seemed to be gauging the small crowd all night, seeing how things were going over. The sound at Smart Bar is pristine, so the music hit in all the right spots. Chez leaned more heavily to the soulful, deep, and jazzy side of things with a good helping of disco thrown in, but it was still hard hitting. Green Velvet was more prone to throwing out some weird little curveballs, playing some tracks with a serious experimental bent, although, again, never sacrificing the pounding rhythm. They were able to meld their two style pretty seamlessly too.

It kind of irks me that people think that the alternative to Swedish House Mafia arena cheese has to be super polite and boring shit, but these guys are living proof that you can put together a set of serious house and have it be as big of a party (if not more so) than an hour of Usher backing tracks. In any case, I'm super fucking excited to go back next time they play, hopefully with a friend or two. If any of you find yourself in Chicago on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, do not hesitate to catch these guys.
