He posted a sampler from his upcoming album. It's really unfair to judge an album from an 11 minute sampler, but that's not stopping me. Gotta say, everything (seems to) pale in comparison to his stunning cover of "Limit to Your Love" (man I love that cover). Getting the feeling he's going to be a strong producer but mediocre songwriter. I hope I'm wrong; I'll happily eat crow on this one if I am.

Oh and I'm not trying to flame any "rumors", I just didn't think this was worth starting a new James Blake thread for.

That crunching noise you hear is the sound of me eating my hat. Glad I was wrong. Man, this "new" song is just gorgeous. This kid is so talented. Don't know how GV scewed up this one; was clearly a no brainer for this year. Can't think of another British artist that has more buzz this year (not to mention talent to back that buzz up).

I adore this album.

edit: (especially the progression of "I never learnt to share") that drop is so great.

Blake signs to Universal Republic

URB MAGAZINE:
Few artists are generating hype right now as much as James Blake, the post-dubstep producer whose dreamy fusion of sincere songcraft and minimal electronics makes girls swoon as much as it makes boys blog. Today, it was announced that Blake has signed to major label Universal Republic in the U.S., and his self-titled debut album will drop in America NEXT WEEK! This of course sets-up Blake to get exposed to an audience well beyond the niche fans who spent 2010 playing Blake’s releases on Belgium techno imprint R&S on repeat. It also means there’s a good chance that by the end of 2011, those same underground fans will be distancing themselves from their early praise should Blake become as popular as, say, James Blunt—another artist who briefly gained the adoration of the arbiters of cool before blowing up in the mainstream. You be the judge…

Didn't this leak like a month and a half ago? Or is this a different version?

nosurprises12
02-04-2011, 12:02 PM
I believe so, but having never heard the leaked version I cannot say whether this one is any different than the first.

In any case, this album is really quite something, one that is bound to be on many year-end lists for 2011. I am not so sure I'd want to see at Coachella, though - his music seems better suited for an indoor venue where there isn't the possibility of it being drowned out by something louder nearby.

A record like this doesn't come without some controversy. There are those who are wary of Blake seemingly repackaging dubstep for the dinner-party circuit. If it's true that Blake's angelic looks haven't exactly hindered his passage overground, this is an album more likely to curdle cream than sit nicely on the coffee table. Blake grew up playing piano; his return to that instrument after a few years blowing holes in his eardrums is an inspired lateral shimmy.

i dunno if anyones already stated this but he's touring england and europe straight through coachellas dates, so he isnt gonna be there

he really is the buzz artist at the moment, he played a show in my town the other night, and the tickets for face value were 8, and people were paying 70+ each for them (and that was for an afternoon matinee show!)

He's in Hamburg the 15th, Berlin the 16th, and Munich the 18th.

He's playing Pitchfork Music Festival this year... Us Chicago hipsters got lucky this year.

He definitely is the buzz artist of the quarter... I wonder if that buzz will wear down by July. 3 day tickets sold out in a day, prompting me to believe this will be an even bigger clusterfuck than last year.

This year has been insane for festivals. First Coachella, then Bonnaroo's pre/early sales, now Pitch. I'm gonna bet Lolla and ACL will be the same way.

Apparently people have started to discover festivals are fun.

bobchella

Edit: Probably not gonna go to Pitchfork now, I was lucky enough to get tickets for his show at Schuba's

The venue he is playing at in SF still has tickets available - and they are doing the "2-per-will-call-only" option.

So seriously, these LA shows were definitely bought out by scalpers. That fucking sucks. Sorry to all of you that weren't able to get a ticket.

GoodGirlGalaxy

Mount Kimbie's latest album Crooks & Lovers has very similar elements to the JB EPs. Also, JB did a remix of Kimbie's track "Maybes". I think they know each other. Just saying.

It was ridiculous; I luckily got a ticket to the Masonic Hall show, but they were literally gone by 12:02. I tried to get one for the Troubadour as well, but they were gone within a few minutes too.

Oh, and then there is this, which showed up literally 10 minutes after the on-sale: http://www.stubhub.com/james-blake-tickets/james-blake-los-angeles-5-24-2011-1060827/

When did scalping tickets to "big" indie events become the new thing to do?

I don't know but this is a sure-fire method to cope with its growing popularity:

The venue he is playing at in SF still has tickets available - and they are doing the "2-per-will-call-only" option.

The GY!BE show was not super crowded with this method.

I would be 100% behind a system like that; is the reason that it's not done more often because of logistical problems implementing this type of ticketing system?

bobchella
03-12-2011, 03:43 PM
I was able to secure 2 tickets for his Chicago show within the two minutes it took to sell out

Well it's not implemented in NY state because they are banning (or have already banned) paperless tickets. I think most venues just don't care unless the artist requests it like AC and GY!BE did.

Just because a show sells out, it doesn't mean scalpers have bought every ticket. You people need to vent elsewhere. Consider the size of the venue, the popularity of the act, the price of the tickets, etc. etc. There was a 2 ticket limit for Heaven's sake. Let's acknowledge some of the success to the artists, promoters, and venues.

BTW - I think ticketless, will-call, or otherwise, are terrific ideas. Those will sell out just as fast for artists in high demand.

03-12-2011, 04:05 PM
FYI, Chicago's show was a 2 Ticket Limit, and Will call only. Venue's Capacity is 167.

So the almost instantaneous listings on StubHub are just people who all of a sudden realized they couldn't make it?

I completely agree that tickets for a popular artist's show will sell out fast regardless of the way in which they are sold, but it would be foolish to deny that a fair amount were purchased by those with absolutely no intention of going to the show and with the sole purpose of selling them for obscene amounts of money.

Happy belated Birthday, by the way :)

Reread. I said they are banning paperless tickets, as in no ONLY Will Call shows which are popular at GAMH to prevent scalping. I.e., only paper tickets issued for NY shows. So you having a ticket is my point.
