I know some of the too cool for school people will flame away here, and I'm devastated by Frusciante's departure, but it's pretty easy to imagine them as a Friday headliner, making their return with new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer. New record as early as March.

This probably means Bonnaroo and Lolla. Coachella is in the spring.

They've never played ACL before and it seems to be getting more and more mainstream, not to mention it's in the middle of September now and it's ACL's 10th anniversary. I could definitely see this happening.

Good point about Austin. Sasquach makes sense, too.

That would be perfect. Almost no interest in attending either fest and even less enthusiastic about rhcp. Here's hoping.

I've seen the Chili Peppers twice and both times were enjoyable. I don't feel the need to ever see them again though. Especially without Frusciante. If they played Coachella again... it would just be one less conflict to worry about. I really don't think we will see them on the poster though.

not to mention itz too soon... give it a few more yearz, new abum bring john back. then it would be something to talk about.

fixed.

flea and chad would be more interesting (and relevant) if they just stick to their current projects and put RHCP into retirement. and this is coming from someone who loved them/seen them in their most early (and amazing) days.

I don't believe Coachella has every had an artist headline 3 times and RHCP should not be the first to do so.
If I would have been at Coachella 07 I would have been watching LCD and The Rapture doing RHCP's set

Boourns
10-17-2010, 10:55 PM
I heard "Can't Stop" and "Dani California" after Blonde Redhead and on my way to LCD (had to get some water along the way). Then after LCD I heard "Under the Bridge". Meh. That was enough for me.

Love some RHCP back in the day... but no John? Thats not even worth seeing. I HATED their Coachella 07 set, worst of the 3 ive seen. Saw them back in 2003 and it was really really excellent...then in 06 and 07 and so disappointed. Im done with them, unless John comes back and they put out some solid material.

I'm an unabashed fan, but they were soft in '07. No energy to the set. Especially in contrast to the hometown set at the Forum in LA that I witnessed earlier in the tour, which was amazing. Coachella was one of their very last stops on that trek and you could just tell they were burnt out & over it. During one of John & Flea's musical interludes, I was close enough to see Anthony on the back side of the stage pacing back and forth talking on his cell phone in one ear with a finger in the other. No fucking joke. I was pretty bummed. Always will love this band, but I gotta call it like I see it.

RHCP are pretty much one of those festival headliners that are no-brainers in many respects. They are known to the masses, but also edgier enough. They are reliable and turn up and play the hits.
The only problem is I feel I have seen the RHCP head about 10 festivals and there hasn't been much of anything new or exciting for me in the last 10 years. In short, RHCP are a easy, lazy sort of headline booking.

Rosemont17
10-18-2010, 07:12 AM
euro festivals is where they are probably booked. bonnaroo and lolla make sense as well.. No reason for coachella to book them again....

i hear so much crap about their coachella 07 set, what was so bad about it?

It was easily the worst of the three times I've seen them. Anthony looked strung out.... the only member who seemed to give a shit was Flea. That was my only real conflict in 2007(I only knew like 4 bands on the line-up) and I made a very poor decision.

Last time I saw them was in '03 at Coachella and they played a very good set. Haven't heard good things since and I haven't liked any work they released since then. So, uhh no thanks.

"By The Way" is completely underrated. Listen to songs like "Venice Queen" and "Warm Tape". This is their best work along with BSSM. Stadium is a solid piece, but a legitimate argument could be made (in hindsight) for contraction into one 15 or 16 song album (as opposed to a double). Those who hate on the Peppers baffle me, but to each their own.

John Frusciante's departure is significant. I hold out hope for Josh, but the loss of Johns backing vocals alone would seem to be a catastrophic loss for this band.

In fairness, "Snow (hey oh)" and "Tell Me Baby" were great pop/rock songs. That little guitar flutter on Snow is killer, but alas, no Frusciante is problematic.

I didn't hate everything on Stadium Arcadium, but I felt that making it a double was mistake. Especially the track Slow Cheetah. I hate that song.

Musically, John can't keep up with Flea. Go watch their Coachella performance on the DVD and watch the little intro jam they do. He's good but nothing special, I don't know why anybody cares about seeing him with RCHP. It's unfortunate, mostly because of Anthony Kiedis' singing, I think they are one of the worst live bands I have ever seen. Flea is fun to watch, but that's about it.

Also, if they play Lolla, Flea could take on bass duties for the inevitable Jane's slot.

i'm no huge chili peppers fan but shit talking frusciante in general is bad taste

hes a hugely influential guitarist whose crafted some pretty legendary licks

hes way more capable at guitar than his playing with RHCP shows though. he can shred when he wants to, he can play super melodic tear jerker solos when he wants to, he can funk-riff all fucking day long - john is the real deal. his solo albums show just how expressive of a guitar player he is.

ever heard the mars volta song L'Via L'Viaquez ?

thats john ripping up that intro solo - not omar

Fuck this band. I can't believe so many people would find this acceptable if Frusciante was part of it. Complete waste of a headliner. I'd almost rather they had the Killers or Kings of Leon if they want to have garbage. Even their good shit like Mothers Milk isn't worth seeing them perform in 2010. Sublime w/ Rome would even be more interesting at this point and that's pretty pathetic.

Please Coachella don't even consider this.

Im overjoyed John left the band. I hope he decides to do some solo shows. I enjoy his solo records more than any RHCP album. Not to mention I think it would be rad if Omar Rodriguez Lopez got a solo set and John played alongside. Swahili Blonde might even find itself on the poster (since Warpaint probably will too). John @ coachella is a good thing. Anthony Kiedis not so much.

I think the point was more RHCP are a miss able headliner, rather than the knife vs Radiohead or Daft Punk, etc. The Knife is likely to conflict with a top performer already, so why not make it someone like RHCP.
