BURIAL
Digital Mystikz (or just Mala)
Kryptic Minds
Clubroot
High Tone LIVE
Scuba
High Contrast
Instra:mental
Amon Tobin
Boxcutter
Breakage
DJ Kutz
Headhunter
iTAL tEK
SBTRKT

One time i was on there and posted something about Bassrush constantly booking the same DJ's and how variety is nice and everyone went in there to defend them, that was probably the most posting I've ever witnessed on there in a day. Thanks for the confirmation. I know Pure Filth is a dubstep promoter but has booked D'n'B in the past, Mampi Swift was at an event a while back. please please PLEASE book some good D'n'B, something of the liquid variety would be awesome but I know pure filth likes it grimey so anything really would be much appreciated.

He booked Calculon in San Diego and Calculon is definitely liquid. I have great faith Sam will give us a killer lineup and I'm glad someone is paying attention to these message boards. There is obviously enough interest to merit some kind of bass stage.

I'm well aware of your XXXL days and have caught quite a few sets of yours under that name so I know you have been around the LA scene for quite some time. I think I was even eating sushi with you that one time Respect had the Sushi night up in Baby Amsterdam at the Larchmont/Bee a while back, i believe it was the Ladies of Dum N Bass show. I have faith some magic will happen on that stage and just wanted to throw that request out there.

There is no denying that, the 3 deck set at Bassrush Wednesdays when they had it at Cinespace was a true showcase of his talent.

Donaldj
09-29-2010, 04:13 PM
I bet we'll get a few 90 minutes and maybe even one or two 2 hour sets. I bet at least 50% of them though are hour slots. We should do the math and figure out how many possible artists we could get, 25-30? and start a poll. I assume we'll get a few breaks artists too. Maybe a Hybrid or a Uberzone or something.

09-29-2010, 04:15 PM

Yea, I'm worried about an Arcade Fire/Daft Punk/something else amazing conflict as well. Although there are several D&B DJs that would get top priority for me over pretty much anything that could possibly be booked. There are so few bands at this point I want to see that haven't any more. As far as Sahara EDM who knows.

careful talking shit about XYZ, he came to our az rave message board once when we were all hating on him to defend himself.

i can honestly say i cannot remember one MC i've ever, truly enjoyed. there was a very old jamaican guy at together as one when 2003 became 2004, but it wasn't really traditional MCing. i want to hear music, not screaming mother fuckers.

It would actually be somewhat interesting to hear what he has to say about his mcing over dnb, as long as he understands where most of us are coming from when we say we hate mc's. My biggest gripe is sticking these local and/or shitty mc's on the mic when highly respected and talented djs from around the world are playing. This is a HUGE no no to me. I once had a local Tucson mc kicked off the mic cause he was trying to be on it during BSE- that is fucking absurd of some talentless schmuck to think he's capable of rocking a mic over BSE.

Anyway, I am still extremely excited about this news of a Pure Filth stage. I'm having trouble remembering the year they were in the venue - was it the entire weekend and was it the year the dome was by the lockers? It's been discussed, but that location was awful. The way this news has come out so far in advance leads me to believe that this is gonna be a proper stage that will be given just as much consideration as far as talent, schedule, and set up as the rest of the stages at Coachella.

Edit: and yes, Marcus Intalex. Great fun at FABRIC a couple weeks ago. God damn London and all their amazing shows and venues. I'm digging a lot of people's lists. We should all party some time. I'm free in April.

When the songs are structured around the MCs (i.e. The Bug and Warrior Queen), it can be enjoyable. When it's just someone yelling over the music (i.e. whoever Freq Nasty had when he opened for Chem Bros in Oakland), it's not enjoyable.

I wouldn't mind seeing Spaceape emcee for Kode9, though.

I don't mind certain MCs and certain styles of D&B are better suited towards it than others. Jump Up works the best I think. I do not ever want to hear a male MC talk over a Liquid track with female vocals though. It's really really really annoying.

I would say jump up is really the only style i don't mind MC's on, MC's on a liquid set are usually a bad idea all together imo haha.

Donaldj
09-30-2010, 01:33 PM
If it's someone like Conrad who can actually sing and harmonize and add something to the layering I'm all for that in a Liquid track/set. If it's just some random lyrics and hype stuff it just doesn't work well in my opinion. The Hype man MC routine though does work for most Jump Up DJs just fine.

Hello everyone :)

Haven't posted on this board ina while, once it became clear that I would be unable to attend 2010 I got pretty sour and had to stay away... but I am optimistic about 2011!

Just had to say it was nice to see a solid list of artists in the first post of the thread, it's clear that this movement has really touched a lot of people and the awareness of the quality producers has grown exponentially :)

Redgarding mc's, many are lame, a few are amazing. Any of these guys would be alright by me

As for producers, lets not fuck about- bring Magnetic Man.

closely followed by this one from Addison Groove, AKA Headhunter

and of course I'm always down for any of the founders- Digital Mystikz (or either of them alone), Loefah (on a whole other flex right now!) Pinch, Distance, Shackleton, Kromestar (forthcoming album Colourful Vibrations sounds WAY too big), anyone from the Deep Medi or Hotflush camp, Jakes, Giant, Emalkay, MATTY G! (baddest man on the westcoast)...

ooo don't forget Kito

Yes, this is an anti-Caspa/Skream/Rusko/Benga/etc thread. I want the real shit.

whoa nelly don't throw the baby out with the bathwater!

I'm with you 100% on Caspa and Rusko, manz sold out a long time ago and their sound is heerrrting now. But Skream and Benga straight invented this sound. Personally I love what Magnetic Man is doing, and Skream's album is really an ALBUM... I love his music, and have been fortunate enough to see him play, will always love that man.

did you cop all the free tunes he gave away? Freeizm vol. 1-3?

lol just read the whole thread and its mostly about drum and bass! fuck yes. I think Autonomic (D-Bridge and Instra:Mental) is at the top of the game right now, but I'm not sure if the half-time stuff is as suitable for peak hour festival play... Get S.P.Y. and Marky!

You guys like Rockwell? One of my faves right now.

See, this is the only kind of electronic music that really excites me right now. I'm not a fan of that wobbly generic dubstep at all, and I'm only marginally a fan of dnb, but I really like guys like Flying Lotus, James Blake, Nosaj Thing, Gold Panda, Pariah and Burial because they use different rhythms and don't always quantize their music. Sometimes it takes a few listens but I start to notice a distinct style in their music when the drums are a little off-kilter. It's not so much that the music is good because the drums are off-beat, it's how or when the artist chooses to do this that gives their songs a unique style. J Dilla was responsible for a lot of these techniques and even though it might sound like it's randomly off-beat, it's actually very thought out and structured (well I can't speak for all the artists). Anybody can make a song with drums that don't strictly align to the beat, but not everyone can do it with in a way that sounds good. (and maybe it doesn't to you). That's my 2 cents anyway.

Mittens - I am enjoying your contribution to this thread. I have listened to every video you posted. Really dug the Kito track.

budluster - regarding the Zomby track, it really is amazing how people hear music so differently. I don't hear anything off beat or off rhythm about it. I just hear it as something a bit more complex, a bit more out of the ordinary as far as the timing goes. I think the timing is perfect.

The thing that really gets me about a lot of the tracks I've been really feeling lately is how much I've been digging vocals. I usually HATE vocals, especially female vocals, but the samples used in many of the tracks that I am enjoying seem to fit perfectly in order to match the mood of the music. You take someone like Burial who can take a fucking Ray J vocal sample of all things and turn it into something so gorgeous. I do understand that it's not for everyone and I'm actually very happy with that.

If Magnetic Man is at Coachella they will be in the Sahara. WHO THE FUCK IS ARTWORK?

I think Mount Kimbie will be at Coachella, probably not Pure Filth area. I'm thinking Gobi.

I'm thinking about the 2 dBridge & Instra:mental sets I caught a few weeks back. The Saturday night set was so dark and techy WANT AT COACHELLA.

I would love for this thread to be filled with recommendations once this lineup is announced. Most everyone who has posted in here knows their shit and I think that collectively we will know who is who when this thing is announced. I cannot wait. Only what, 3 more months?

Totally blew my mind in Denver a few weekends ago- I actually threw up when he played the Eyez VIP... completely caught me off guard. And the Changes remix :o

KIMT3iqwO7A

I'm so glad to see all this love for Kryptic Minds... glad everyone's not just clamoring for Excision/Datsik/Boregore etc.

If I had to pick one of each, if we're talking pure filth stage I would like D-Bridge and Kromestar.

In the Sahara, I would like S.P.Y. & Marky and Magnetic Man (live).

but hell there are so many other people I could just as easily choose...

nah man I'm from Albuquerque but I've been hitting up Submission shows for a minute, since the first time they brought Hatcha. Hearing him on the Funktion 1 was pretty much where my addiction to this sound really started.

See you up there early December for a soon-to-be-announced surprise (!!!)

Don't miss Andy C the day before Thanksgiving. I won't be there but if you see a fit blonde named Hayley tell her I said she looks beautiful.

I feel like if GV really wants to rep the edge of the blade, they cannot not book these guys. And none of this 4pm nonsense. Skream, Benga, Artwork, live, 3 laptops synced, in the dark.

haha, actually her and Joy Orbison were the only two that I knew of as well. I just wanted to post some of her stuff.

From the little I heard, B.Lewis and Dorian Concept sounded pretty interesting as well. It's amazing how many people are jocking Dilla now, not that I'm complaining.

Seriously.... who would have thought that trip-hop (or whatever you want to call it) would explode the way it did. Dilla would be proud.

Also, great find on that article my friend. That Tokimonsta World is Ours beat is fantastic, and its just the first of those links I have clicked. Cant wait to listen to more

Well I'm hoping for a local performance because I will not have the money to travel very far. :/

I have faith though, High Contrast coming to the states is a big deal and is a must book for at least one event in southern california. This means Coachella is a possiblity, while a High Contrast polo fields set would be awesome I don't think he would get a proper length time slot. I will take what I can get but at least 90 minutes would be ideal, Coachella would most likely only give him 50-60 minutes.

Edit: You think a Hospitality tour is possible? Would be killer to get a few of the Hospital cats out here together on a tour.

Donaldj
10-15-2010, 09:47 AM
I'm sure he'll play SoCal too. Even if it isn't Coachella it could be a massive, or maybe a one off like tonight's LTJ Bukem show. LA is the biggest D&B market in the US. He wouldn't skip it.

But by "live" you don't mean "live", right? i.e. if a DJ just played the track, then it's no more "live" than you playing the same track on your iPod or home speakers.

Sadly I will be out of town when he plays here, he's playing on Thanksgiving and I will be visiting family in Texas haha. Like Donald said up there, Southern California has the biggest Drum N Bass scene in the states. Donald is the luckiest californian I know as far as being able to catch top notch drum n bass every week, he's in prime location for the best weekly in LA.

By live I mean it's a bootleg and hasn't been released and probably won't at this point unless he just gives it out online. I don't have it/nor do many people so all I had heard were bad youtube radio/crowd rips. Hearing stuff on a loud system is all I meant. No, it wasn't played "live" as in like band performance.

It's funny how many mentions of tolerable MCs get brought up. I don't know anyone who goes to D&B or dubstep shows to actually hear a MC. We are just looking for the least irritating ones. That should say something. Granted sometimes I am mixing and I'm thinking a MC would totally work here IF he or she actually didn't try and steal the spotlight and did their job correctly.
