tour dates finally! cant wait.

Meh. I hope it isn't this and something more uplifting like say perhaps.. new album? They said at the vegas show that they were just trying out how the band meshed together after being apart for so long. That show was pretty goddamn great and I imagine the rest of the short tour was as well.

New album!

naruto_kenshin
03-21-2011, 10:32 AM
The first/last time I went to red rocks was to see Tool. I hated it because most of the people around us were just talking and socializing while Tool played. I figured it was due to the open-ness of the venue. With its wide open seating and comfortable outdoor atmosphere I figured this happened all the time at the venue. Can anyone speak to this?

I might go see them in San Antonio! I hope they switch it up with the set-lists instead of playing certain albums on certain nights like last time.

Right now its looking like Oregon and Washington, then I take that whole next month off and pick back up and do TX through CO. Although I am not 100% sure about AZ yet...sucks its a fuckin MONDAY.

I toyed with doing NY through DC but I hear that Philly venue is outdoors and in the middle of summer? No thanks.

03-21-2011, 06:05 PM
GA means I can get there early and stake out a good spot. Either around where you were for Daft Punk or I think near the first couple rows in the bowl part of the venue. Maybe right behind the soundbooth so I can sit and hold the camera. That will give a steadier shot and I won't have people standing in front of me.

I hope some of you are planning on taping the shows you go to. I'm not doing any cause I plan on being front of house again and its just too risky and the sound is shit up there. Sorry :(

Well at 13th Step show in Phoenix Maynard said something along the lines of, "Irony, an album about alcoholism sung by a drunk." Which he shortly followed with a swig from the bottle. The way he said it, it sounded like Billy wrote all of 13th Step.

Judith is obviously Maynard. I'm not so sure in regards to 13th Step though.

I'm not holding my breath.

My excitement of the Detroit show is kind of waning, sadly. It's the same day as the Warped Tour show, which will be an all-day event in the baseball stadium parking lot literally across the street from the Fox Theatre. Ugh.

Plus the Fox is all reserved seating, and usually on the pricier side (Eddie Vedder is coming there soon as well and he's charging $75). I hope I'm just being unnecessarily pessimistic.

I get WHY they do it but here's the thing I wish they would do - if they want to charge people to meet the band I really couldn't give a crap less. Hell, charge those dumbfucks 2k. What I have a problem with when it comes to these "VIP Packages" (for any artist - not just APC) is the early entrance side of things.

I refuse to do any of the VIP Packages because I have zero desire to go back and have awkward interaction with the band. This goes for ANY artist I am a fan of; that's not why I am there. I am there to watch a show and I happen to personally prefer the energy of the barricade. So to tell me that the ONLY way I can experience it is by not only paying an exorbitant amount of money but having to go back and "meet" the band? No thanks. I hated it when NIN did it and the Spiral was about 1/3 what an individual VIP TICKET cost for APC.

I know I am probably in the minority but certainly I am not the only person who wants to be up front for shows but has zero desire to "meet the band"? As somebody who has done multiple shows for many artists it's very frustrating to see more and more musicians fucking the dynamic up with this shit. A big part of doing multiple shows is waiting outside, meeting people, establishing a community, paying your fucking dues, and that really isn't happening anymore because of this kind of stuff. I think a big part of that barricade energy is because those fans have typically waited all day outside with each other and you become a small family for that night. You know that the person next to you is up there because they are just as passionate as you are and it has nothing to do with how much money they have.

I'm sure I am being a baby about it but I am just not gonna go through the bullshit of stressing every single fucking show. I don't need to be up there every night but if I am doing 10 shows I'd expect to at least get half of them. Last tour I had the Emotives to know I was going to be up front and now I don't even have that. It just isn't worth it to me to spend all the money to still wait outside and never have the guarantee of barricade no matter how early I arrive. I'll just save the money and vacation time for the possible ASHES dIVIDE tour in the Fall (which I am not holding my breath on by any means).

do you really, really, have to be 1st row? 3rd row isn't close enough? plus, as a taper, you gotta know it sounds better if you stay back at least a quarter of the way so you get the full effect from the stacks on either side...

You're absolutely right about this. I saw Tool on two different occasions at the same venue -- once from the stands (2006) and the other on the floor (2010) -- and it sounded MUCH better in the stands.

I suppose one would try to keep their spot if they're about row 4 or 5 at the front, but in retrospect, I would have moved back a few more rows to get a considerably better sound while still maintaining a decent view.

Holy hell, the prices for Gibson are $40+fees and $75+fees? Fuck you, APC.

jaimiej
04-04-2011, 06:25 PM
Everyone has their idea of what is the "best" place to stand, I personally like to be up front. I am aware that the sound is better further back but typically I am not taping at shows where I am up front anyway. Honestly I started taping on the AD tour basically out of necessity because nobody else was. I have recorded other things since then but I'm not a REAL taper ;) My personal enjoyment of the shows is more important to me and that's just me being honest.

As far as the first vs. third/fourth head debate I prefer the control that the barricade gives me. Granted on the last tour things were insanely mellow (possibly due to the fact that the front of the crowd was full of pussies who bought their way up there?) but at a typical show I like to have the barricade to help ground me. I have been at shows where I thought my ribs were going to break but I much prefer that to the "holy shit my feet aren't on the ground" feeling you can get being a few heads back.

i hear ya. i struggle to find a balance of enjoying shows and taping. which sometimes means not taping. i also dont enjoy fighting for my spot that much, which is probabaly why i stay back a bit as well as the improved sound aspect. it does get a bit tight when you dont have the open space/air on the rail.

i didn't realize tickets were gonna be $75 tho. that is a bit much...saw all three phx warm ups for the same price. i'll still probably go tho. apc is great.

The instant the Detroit show was announced for the Fox, I knew the upper price tier would be high. $59.50 +fees is reasonable. Especially when I looked at the Washington, DC show and ALL tickets are an unbelievable $68 +fees. Fuck that...

Like Jaimie, I would never buy VIP tickets. I'm not gonna knock other people for doing it, and I'm not gonna knock the band for offering it. Someone out there surely has the money to blow on something like that, and if they care about it that much I'm sure - to them - it's worth it. I do want to try Maynard's OMGWINE, but I'm not gonna buy an overpriced bottle from his website or get VIP to do so. I wish he'd let the venues serve it, even if it would be strictly limited quantities.

NIN's spiral was a whole different bird. It was a small investment for priceless advantages and memories that reached far beyond an individual show. Funny enough, APC did something similar years ago that probably no one here remembers, called The Link. I don't remember how much I paid for it, nor do I even remember the benefits. About all I have to show for it is a promo pic, a maroon file folder, and a way too small to fit me now t-shirt.

As far as I am aware no to both questions. If anything I would guess he had more involvement with MDN and Emotive. Maybe you should buy a VIP package and ask him? ;)

And Holy fuck I totally forgot about The Link hahaha. I think I was pissed about it too but I know I'm fairly sure I did it. I think I hated it mainly just because I feel like the "fan club" things are a way to take advantage of your fanbase. Thats just my personal opinion. Although I'm sure I hated the Spiral because it fucked up the NIN community in 05 and brought a whole bunch of lame fucks but thats a whole 'nother story. ;)

microcuts
04-05-2011, 12:27 PM
I can say now, 11 years later, that the Link was a total waste of money. I'm fairly sure it was completely pointless. Maybe it let me in on presales, but I doubt it. Presales back then would have been silly anyway since the band wasn't even well-known. Maybe it was just a stepping stone for the Tool Army.

And yeah, as far as the Spiral goes, isn't that why Trent killed it? It definitely got ugly, but I can honestly say I'd have never met Trent if not for that club. And that wasn't even an advertised feature, which made it even more special.

Yeah I vividly recall pitching a MASSIVE fit in Texas cause I was forced to go in and do the mng if I wanted barricade. After waiting outside all day in the TX heat I sucked it up and did it but I was not happy.

I think I just find forced fan/artist interactions to be the most awkward thing ever but its probably just cause I make them that way. :)

When Nine Inch Nails did it for NIN/JA it was a lot of fun. Anything played in soundchecked would not get played in their regular set. So it was a nice bonus if they had a song you werent gonna hear a couple hours later.

HA! First of all I did several NIN soundchecks, I know. However, Maynard is no Trent and I would not expect to receive anything "special" in your soundcheck. ;)

Secondly - I didn't "pick fights" with anyone to get up front. I punched a guy (and threw his hat lolz) who decided he was going to aggressively PUSH me and everyone around me to get in front of us. I was actually about 3 heads back at that point so that had nothing to do with barricade.

As far as how I am "doing it", I'm not sure what you consider the "correct" way but I have slept on the concrete more times than I care to even tell you. I am a very firm believer of earning your spot at a show. That is my entire issue with the VIP thing because it takes away that aspect of going to a show.

Same here.

These are the most OVERPRICED tickets that I have purchased in some time.

How, exactly, do you know it is overpriced until you've been to the show?

You mean you didn't get first row? You're losing your edge.

I got awesome seats too :D

As did I. I got 9th row in the pit for SD. I guess it pays to only get single tickets. lol

what did you get dlo? the best i was able to pull was sec 5 row 24.... :(

still good seats, but not pit. i also have an extra pair in sec 5, row 31 and sec 203, row 5. i may still keep the 203 pair and tape from there...that's a good section to do that from. if you know anyone that might want the other pairs, let me know ASAP. otherwise i'm just going to cancel the other two pairs. i only have 3 days to cancel...

Bummer. Still a good spot to tape though. And isn't that what counts? :)

wtf? i'm getting 403 Forbidden on both Live Nation and Ticketmaster right now?

I pulled second row pit in SD and apparently neglected to actually PURCHASE it amidst all the chaos of my morning. I can't find record of it in any of my emails and/or bank account. Ah well...

Yep :( Totally my fault though, shit was so insane for me today. I had a group of people helping me grab tickets and unfortunately I gave 2 of them the wrong "verify by Visa" passwords (I swapped 2 cards accidentally) and it ended up causing two of my cards to be locked and I couldn't purchase on them! I'm sure at some point while I was trying to figure all that out I accidentally forgot to hit PURCHASE on my SD ticket. :(

That verify by visa shit is such a pain in the ass.

Let me take a shot at translation--

Billy and co have new songs completed and ready to go. Maynard hasn't heard any of them and is back in AZ crushing grapes.

How'd I do?

Not bad. I read an interview with Billy back in October and he had said he had already written new material but it was up to Maynard on whether they would become actual songs or not. I take this to mean that Maynard has started that process.

Point taken, though they are a little more than what I paid to see Daft Punk and Radiohead at the Greek, so they've got some big shoes to fill.

Then again those Daft Punk and Radiohead tickets were probably worth a lot more than you paid, in hindsight?

fikus222

Indeed. I always enjoy shows at the Greek. I'm sure this will be great. Plus, I've only seen APC once, opening for NIN in PHX on the Fragile tour.

I will admit, they are more expensive than I was anticipating, but, it could turn out to be a great show. I'm excited to see what they pull out.

^Same here. I loved the shows at the Avalon and I am willing to bet set-wise we probably won't get something like Sleeping Beauty this time around but, otoh (and all snarkiness to MJK aside), we could get to see some new material. That would be pretty f'in sweet.

If I can get up there hell yes. I hated The Mars Volta (yeah, I said it) and dealt with that every night so surely I can handle this.

I'm anxious to see how these crowds are, last tour was sooooo tame I'm wondering if things will be different this time around.

BRING IT.

Usually people freak the fuck out when I say that I hated TMV. I didnt like their music but honestly I hated their FANS more. It was a bunch of sweaty dudes with afros that jumped NONSTOP during their set rubbing their balls and shit all up on my back. No thanks.

Especially having 1 of the guitarists come out for an extended Thomas in San Jose. Definitely one of my APC highlights.

haha man. For the record the first time I saw Mars Volta was opening for APC in Chicago in 2004 and I fucking LOVED IT. Huge fan ever since. In fact, one of the best opening band performances I have EVER seen. Seen them 5 times since and will be catching them up for Soundgarden this summer.

On a side note hope the VIP package I bought for SD is worth it....not quite sure what to expect with these soundchecks.

well, i guess it depends on what you're into...

but raekwon, dj quik and talib kweli were just here...

i have deftones, cake, glitch mob, APC (of course), and Cut//Copy all coming up locally, but thats just a small amount of what is coming. Portugal. TheMan is this Sunday...i'm missing that one, tho i'm a little bummed i'm not sucking it up and goin.

then you have a bunch of Prince shows going on in LA, Rock the Bells should be announced at the end of this month with the shows in Aug (LA), EDC in June (Vegas) and Rod y Gab in Aug (LA)....for travel shows.

For the record I loved Burning Brides. I don't remember what city it was in but that chick bass played launched a bottle at some douchebags who were yelling at her to show her tits.

I'm glad these shows aren't til June/July, I've got flights to buy and I keep putting it off

Yeah I'm super high class.

Well one of the videos APC actually released has me in it thats pretty fucking embarrassing but I am not beating anyones ass in it. Just chewing my gum like a fucking heifer. The only other footage I appear in from this tour you cant see me but you can hear my loud ass voice screaming at security to yank a stupid drunk cunt out. I had no clue the guy next to me was filming. Oops.

I'm not about to link it though so don't ask ;)
