I've never really considered Queen a gay band. Come on - We Will Rock You? We Are The Champions? All the rednecks in my trashy hometown would blare those songs when they came on the classic rock channel.

Although I saw the We Will Rock You Musical in London. Gay. Awesomely, brilliantly gay. :-)

also add:

Bronski Beat ("Small Town Boy")

Iggy Pop's album "Lust for Life" is really gay, especially the song Some Weird Sin

Tom Robinson Band--is he still around? "Glad to be Gay" in the late 70s.

Elton John!!! Can you imagine what it would have been like if he'd have been able to marry a man when we were in high school back in the 70-80s?

Husker Du's Bob Mould

our local boys Los Dryheavers! (though I don't know if they are "out" yet)
http://www.myspace.com/losdryheavers

They totally rock--I hope they get to play Coachella one day!

Michael Stipe. Some of his REM songs are quite gay, such as "Losing my religion": "what if all these fantasies come flaming around? Now I've said too much."

Melissa Etheridge--yeah, honey! Also K.D. Lang, Tracy Chapman, and Me'Shell Ndegeocello. And don't forget polyamorous Madonna.

long-time rumors have been heard about Ms. Whitney Houston and Ms. Dolly Parton being gay (though not together!)

A number of rockers were identified as "bi" back in the day, including Lou Reed and Davd Bowie. Pete Townsend has come out as bi. According to a recent biography, Jimi Hendrix claimed to be gay in an attempt to get out of the military. (It didn't work.) And wasn't there a rumor about Rod Stewart in the 80s?

Always thought that rapper Nelly fer sure ought to be gay with a name like that!

Their cover of Liz Phair's "Flower" is about as cool as it gets. All this, coming from an exceedingly straight guy. Can't help loving lyrics as far out there as these guys are willing to go. Vince Clark was only around for the 1st year and split after that. I still wonder why people consider DM a "gay" band - ok sure Mart was into the leather at one time but that was 20 years ago. He grew out of that phase in the late 80s - I don't know how you can call anything from the 90's on up "gay" from Depeche Mode.

Btw - never seen Erasure before but I will agree - Pet Shop Boys in 2006 was a spectacle to the umpteeth degree. I've never seen anything like that before or since.

Six words

"Don't Say No...Boys Say Go!"

I just always assumed Vince was the gay influence on the first album. Actually, I'm sure he was, but he's married with a kid now. Normally, that wouldn't mean anything, but c'mon...he's half of one of the "gayest" bands on earth...why would he want a "beard"? If anything, it would hurt his career.

Andy is very openly gay, but Vince is straight.

"Straight" is probably overstating it. But yeah, as I already mentioned, he's married with a kid.

If Andy is a 10 on a gay scale, Vince is probably a 3. I suspect when you make your money from being a gay icon, you gotta camp it up a little on stage. Honestly, he doesn't even really do that anymore. Seems like last time I saw them, he wore a suit with a little satellite dish on his head.

No, your argument was that they're not exactly gay. I'm saying they are gay--they've just fucked chicks and had kids.

Well, I hate to extend this idiotic conversation longer, but...

First of all, I don't know where you're getting this "they" business. Andy Bell is easily the "gayest" man in pop music, and I never said anything otherwise.

Secondly, I would define "gay" as someone who is unattracted to the opposite sex. I agree with you that that doesn't mean they couldn't have had a sexual experience with the opposite sex...I agree that Freddie Mercury is an excellent example of a gay man who has had sex with women.

And even though there is absolutely no evidence that Vince Clarke has ever had a sexual experience with a man, I agree that he probably HAS, simply due to the world he has lived in since he was 18.

When I said he probably was a "3", I meant on a scale where "1" is totally straight, "10" is totally gay, and "5" is a true bi-sexual. (BTW, I don't believe "true" bisexuals exist...I dated a "bisexual" woman, but as far as I'm concerned, she was a lesbian who was experimenting. Everyone leans one way or the other.)

Vince Clarke identifies himself as straight, and I've never seen any evidence that he or anyone else who would know has ever said otherwise. He married a woman he has dated for a long time. He has no reason to "hide" his homosexuality...if anything, being "openly straight" hurts his status with his fanbase. Therefore, I have no reason to believe he's gay.

Since YOU'RE so sure, I can only assume that you've fucked him personally. But to use your Freddie Mercury analogy, that just makes him a straight guy who occasionally fucks closet case junkies.

gaypalmsprings

MissingPerson, we can be great friends. Scissor Sisters rocked my world and changed my life at Coachella 06, they were a HUGE reason why my newly 18 year-old self attended the fest. Every song was perfect, Jake's falsetto was flawless. I skipped Tool to see them and i'd do it again everytime

They blew my mind, they really did. I was thoroughly prepared to sneer my ass off at them the whole way though, and I enjoyed them every fucking bit as much as I enjoyed Muse later on the same day. I mean, my indie scenester brain keeps trying to scream "FOR GOD'S SAKE DON'T SING ALONG!" but my actual face keeps doing it anyway.

Jake Shears full monty-ed on the big screen for 50,000 people, and rolled around in the mud. Security had to get him back. They basically caught him with a bunch of bath towels, like netting an animal.

So yeah, I'd have voted for them if The Smiths weren't there. And I'd have voted for Final Fantasy if he was.

I'm so thrilled you had that experience. Not only is Shears a fearless, flawless falsetto man but the band itself is very tight. Their guitarist is fantistic, man when they break into "Filthy/Gorgeous", it's hard not to rock out to it. so much better than on the album. And I LOVE their cover of "Comfortably Numb", and oh man Anna Matronic is so cool too. And they're gay!

I need another Sisters show, they've skipped FL on all of their tours

MissingPerson

I went looking for videos on youtube, but naturally, full-frontal male nudity is a no-no. :D

They did the whole "Gosh, we love it here in IRELAND!" which usually pisses me off for being so corny, but it's worth mentioning that Ireland, generally, is still pissed off at Kele Okereke for telling a previous year's Oxegen that he was glad "To be back in the United Kingdom!!!"... which didn't go down well at all. We've forgiven him and all, but we've not forgotten.

Yeah, they're shamelessly crowd pleasing and, yeah, I'm not going to lie awake at night thinking about their lyrics or anything, but fuck it, if you can't enjoy that band on stage, you're some sort of dead-eared joyless freak.

It takes ten people to play No Cars Go on stage or, if it's Owen Pallett, one.

That said, I wouldn't really consider Arcade Fire a "gay band" because I don't think anybody's gayness or otherwise has any bearing on the music, unlike Pallett's own project, which I would kinda consider substantially gayer, and absolutely freaking brilliant, so everybody go out and hear some Final Fantasy right now.

I definitely used to be that type. In my mind it was either you're experimenting or just on a stop to your way to gayville. It wasnt until I got with a guy who I always thought was straight that my views changed

The lead singer from Placebo isn't gay. He just claims to be bi to get attention like annoying art school bitches.

Stefan is openly gay. I think Brian is more Morrisey-ish as I've never seen him with a man or woman.

Oh. I stand corrected. I still say they're a bunch of disingenuous, opportunistic fuckfaces lacking talent and originality. That interview David Bowie did with them is one of the most disgusting things I've ever read.

Do you have a link to the interview? That was quite a few years ago so it's probably been a while since I've seen it. I agree that Brian is shady on a personal level, but we'll have to agree to disagree on the other allegations.

If they were so opportunistic, I feel they would have taken the chance to splatter their faces/names all over every piece of promotional crap that was put out for that Linkin Park fest they did. It almost seemed like were purposely excluded (maybe a clause in their contract?) from doing any promo on that tour and the organizers agreed because the headliners (LP) are fans and just wanted to have them their no matter what. I remember watching a 30 min or 1 hr special on Fuse that profiled all the bands on the tour and they were never even mentioned

Actually Freddy Mercury was bisexual. He died of AIDS and left all his money to a woman. But come on, if "Queen" doesn't shout gay, what does?

I always thing Freddie Mercury's last album and single were so telling...the album was called "The Great Pretender" and the single was "My Love Is Dangerous"....oh so fitting on all levels.
