HEY DACS85 I've done the drive twice and it really matters when you leave. If you go on "the 5" and you get to the Los Angeles area anywhere between 4-6 pm you're going to add two hours to your trip.

Menik, how long did it take us?

I feel like it took about 7 hours from SF area to LA area and then about 1.5 hours to get into Indio Area.

When I drove down from Washington, it took about two hours more to get to Indio from San Francisco than to get to San Francisco from Seattle.

On the way back, we didn't go through L.A. and we took I-10, I-15 and highway 18 through Palmdale. We met some guys who were at the festival at a gas station near Bakersfield and they had left 2-3 hours before us and got there at the same time. I hate L.A.

I would strongly suggest leaving earlyish in the morning. Let's say 9 AM. It should take you an hour or so (probably less) to get to I-5 and you can get to LA in under 5 hours if you don't stop for food and shit. Last time I drove to school from Danville it took about 4.5 hours. I was doing about 85-90 most of the way on I-5.

Then, you have a couple of options. You're probably going to get fucked by LA either way. You can just take I-5 to the 405 to the 10 and follow that (which takes about 2 hours with minor traffic in LA) or I believe I-5 to 210 to 10, which will also take 2ish hours. Traffic is really the big factor. It's always bad by the Ontario airport.

Stay off the 405, the traffic is bad in many spots nearly any time of the night. We went through Palmdale, and it took 1/2 of the amount of time it took when we drove down through LA.

If you are coming from SF, you can always take the Bart to Oakland and a greyhound all the way to indio. I had a friend do this in years past, and it was pretty cheap.

If you are coming down the 99, watch the construction in Fresno. They have 2 chp waiting in each direction, and have a plane/heli tracking speeders. They aren't fucking around anymore, 45mph is 45mph.

the 5 hits the 10, no need to go anywhere near the 405.

what's "rocket surgery"?

I think rocket surgery is when a young man enters that part of his life where things become interesting to him... Things that werent that interesting before... Then one day theres lift off, initially he gets a fright but eventually, with more and more practice, he becomes a fully qualified rocket surgeon and does it day in day out.

I might be wrong now, so dont quote me on that :)

You won't need to go any where near LA except for Pasadena 210 to the 10

Plus you'll be against traffic...

We left at 5am and got there around 130pm. And it took about 8 to get back, so maybe its faster to do 80, 580, 5 etc. And skip the 101.

You can avoid the two added hours in LA by going 5->138->15. It takes a bit longer than 5 does when it's empty, because the speed limit is slower and there's a chance you'll get stuck behind something *really* *slow*, but it beats the stress of LA traffic, and it's kinda a pretty view.

In previous years, I've pulled out of work around 3.30, been on the road by 4, and *in line at camping* by 12.30.

Of course, this means I wasn't actually *asleep* until like 3. :)
