my favourite is "como la flor" by selena.

my standard is "son of a preacher man" by dusty springfield, cause every karaoke bar has that song.

in fact, i sang it for the contest last night. normally, i don't expect to win, i'm good at entertaining, but i don't have as much musical talent as my friend anna that i go with. but i did really well last night and got the most applause, but didn't win cause it was a hick bar and of course one of the country dudes won :(

still though, i <3 karaoke.

i like to do "i call your name" by the beatles too, but i wish places had the mama's and the papa's version cause it's 19038419347 times better.

chances are you will sound like an asshole.completely disagree. blister in the sun ALWAYS gets people up and singing along. it's on that list along with purple rain, bohemian rhapsody, wonderwall, and others i can't think of.

this is an excellent thread. i go to a karaoke bar pretty regularly. i've probably been there about 40 times in the last year and a half, and i've never sung. it's a catch 22 - i will only sing if i get drunk enough, but i can never get drunk enough because the bar closes at 2 and i have to drive home down a really long, winding street. but if i did ever work up enough courage to sing, it would be "mercedes benz" by janis joplin.

I have a similar problem. I'm an OK singer when sober, but I'm truly horrible when drunk. But I need the beer courage to get up there. The results are usually horrific.

bohemian rhapsody is always fun...

Oh hell yes. Was in Florida for a wedding a couple years ago and we all went to a karaoke bar across the street after the rehearsal and dinner, and it was so fucking fun, and after a couple hours everyone left except for me and a few hardcore funsters. One of our group got up to do "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the rest of us sang along so obnoxiously that we kinda drowned her out. So much fun. I wasn't even drunk because I was on antibiotics and couldn't have alcohol :(

Next Friday I'm actually going to be at a karaoke party. So to answer the question, I would do "This Is Hardcore" and "Common People" but nobody EVER has Pulp, which really breaks my heart. So hopefully some Radiohead, and if not, "Space Oddity" or Lionel Richie's "Hello"...that's pretty essential because of my genius icon.

Tessa, they are probably lying. Or at least they were for me. I didn't have to update anything.

Last time I sang karaoke was at a country-type bar for my friend's bachelor party and we sang "Welcome to the Jungle." Or, rather, that was the idea. Oh man Axl sings fast.

There are probably a goodly number of songs which I would sing were some place to have them available and have threatened as such on several occasions. Nothing much has come of these times, tho.

I used to have to MC the occasional karaoke night when I DJ'ed, and despite my lack of a decent voice, these are the ones I could get away with.

Roger Miller - King of the Road (it's short, no big notes, no difficult instrumental bit where you have to dance or stand around looking like a prick!)

Frank Sinatra - That's Life (you gotta love the "puppet, poet" bit to get everyone singin' along!)

Elvis - (Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame - (it's a very short, less-obvious classic)

Saw Doctors - I Useta Love Her (when all else fails, haul out something Celtic - you'll be carried shoulder high from the building, drenched in sweat and Guinness!)

Cheesy bubble-pop or any metal makes for good karaoke. You may think you don't know nsync or backstreet songs, but once the song number is punched in and the hooks come out, you'll find yourself singing along to it.

My karaoke history with advice...
Hotel bar in Jacksonville, FL, February 2005:
NIN - Closer (always fun, really annoys the older patrons, also did it at Coachella 2005)
Barry Manilow - Copacabana (works surprisingly well with a second person)
Tool - Schism (wayyyy too hard to sing, too long, not enough people know or like the song, NOT recommended)
The Beatles - Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (I Shatner-ized this, but only a couple people actually got what I was trying to do)

Karaoke Bleu, summer 2005:
The Beatles - I Wanna Hold Your Hand, and several other Beatles songs I was too drunk to remember (you cannot go wrong with The Beatles, and we mostly stuck with Beatles tunes because their English selection was very limited that night, but I didn't mind because the employees were all unbelievably HOT so I should go back to this place sometime)
John Lennon - Imagine (faking sentimental can be really funny)

I sang most of these, either by myself, or singing along with friends, at my karaoke party back in March at Zip Fusion in a private room with 9 people:
"Creep" (those "RUUUUUNNNN" parts are fucking hard to do if you have no voice)
"Roxanne" (OMG THEY ARE PLAYING COACHELLA!)
"Copacabana" (the girls put this in the queue while I was powdering my nose, and like a man, I did it, and felt dirty afterwards)
"Wonderwall" (take that, fucking Oasis)
"Du Hast" (ahahahaha, why was this in there?)
"Buddy Holly" (fun!)
"Hello" (yes, THAT one, it was very appropriate considering my icon)
that Moody Blues song
"Tender" (great Blur song, but too long, sad, and repetitive to keep audience attention)
some Usher song
"Ghetto Superstar" (ahahaha)
"Fake Plastic Trees" (too touching and lovely to be butchered, so everyone tries hard)
"Bohemian Rhapsody" (BEST KARAOKE SONG EVER)
"Girls and Boys" (fun Blur)
"There There" (Radiohead fans > all)
"Gloria" (my sister did this..horrible song that's so bad the waitress made a face)
"Like a Virgin" (it was a bit weird to see both your crush and your sister singing this song)
"Heart of Glass"
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" (fun!)
"Bittersweet Symphony" (melodrama butchered is always good times)
"Beat It" (can't go wrong with pre-pedophile Jacko)
"Hangin Tough" (OMG WE'RE SO HIP AND IRONIC)
then we hit random buttons to watch random Korean songs

Private rooms are the best if you can get together a big enough group. Expensive as hell, though. God, I love karaoke. My mission in life is to sing "Common People" or "This Is Hardcore"...does anyone know of a place in LA that has Pulp?

after karaoke-ing last night I'm resurrecting this thread. last night I attmped the following:

radiohead/creep - good idea.
muse/muscle museum - bad idea. it gets both too high and too low in range. that man has a crazy voice. also, lots of confused looks from the people in the room.
jamiroquai/virtual insanity - might have been a good idea if I knew the song better. dumb.
blur/girls & boys - good idea, though it gets a bit repetetive.
gorillaz/feel good inc - fucking great idea. SO much fun to sing with another person.
oasis/don't look back in anger - they called me a limey bastard.

my friend at one point sang frank sinatra's fly me to the moon. that was awesome.

Karaoke Bleu, Zip Fusion, Vermont Karaoke & Billiards all did not have "Space Oddity" or Pulp. Or "Rock With You." Wow, you have all those Pulp songs? Do you have a karaoke bar? All Time High is really surprising since it's a cover and rarity and all. I guess Mile End shouldn't be a surprise. I mean, it's a b-side, but it's probably one of the most known songs in America because of Trainspotting. Like a Friend would be soooo good.

Coachella had Common People and a few others. I really want to do "Help the Aged" at my next birthday party.

"Amsterdam" - Guster
"Other Side of the World" - KT Tunstall

Yes, I have those Pulp songs. I own my karaoke business...and I simply cannot stand not having a song that someone may want. Awfully costly, but wholly satisfying.

If you ever come around Detroit, I'll have to get 'Like A Friend'!!!

And any karaoke that doesn't have Space Oddity isn't trying.

Sorry for all the posts. The Chargers won and I get to drink for free. Ergo, I am drunk.

ANYWAY, Space Oddity was met with lots of applause. Demand that your karaoke bar has it.

I firmly believe that karaoke is best when performing 80s songs.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

For my birthday last year, a bunch of friends and I went to Rosen in Koreatown, drank a lot of Korean beer, and sang out hearts out. We were in the back-most room, and when my friends went out for cigs, they said they could hear our group from outside the place. Yesss.

Here's some songs I remember we went though; even better though were the random Korean music videos and the weird translations:

Yellow Submarine - Beatles
Ob La Di, Ob La Da - Beatles
Africa - Toto
Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond
Roxanne - The Police
Walk on the Wild Side - Lou Reed
Land Down Under - Men At Work

I don't remember the rest, but we were there for 4 hrs at least.

I don't think "Like a Friend" exists in karaoke form, but it sure would be great. Oh man. Yeah, I'll definitely let you know if I'm ever in Detroit. And yeah, WTF is up with karaoke bars having 30 Radiohead songs, even random stuff like "True Love Waits" but not a single Pulp song or "Space Oddity?"

How is Rosen? I've never been and am looking for a place for my next karaoke party. Somewhere affordable for a few hours for around 15 people. Trying to find a place with a balance of the key factors: value, English selection, food/booze. Consider yourself invited, of course. Yeah, what sucks is how most places don't have websites.

Edit: Oh, I found a website for Rosen. $40 an hour for a room that holds up to 15 isn't bad. Zip Fusion charged $50, or $65 after tax and forced gratuity. So I take it this is one of those places that doesn't have age restrictions then, lol.

I'd do the Ramones probably. or, if the bar had awesome selection, Black Flag or Minor Threat.

Or, if they had amazing, impossibly deep selection, Acid Police by Boredoms

Rocke, some day I will do Tears for Fears with you. Any of them. I'm pretty good with their lyrics.
Awesome! You got yourself a deal! How about Head Over Heels? We could also duet well with Woman in Chains since there is a male and female part.

Africa - Toto

This is another song I would rock the shit out of. And Mr. Mister - Broken Wings!

Head Over Heels would be awesome.

Someone did "Roxanne" at my birthday a couple years ago, which was incredibly epic, and someone did "Gloria" which scared the hell out of our poor waitress.

Shit, I tended bar then hungout after my shift at Neil's Lounge here in Indio afew years ago so I know Karaoke all too well. Unfortunately, it was more of a Bo-Hunk place back then so options for Rock or Alternative music were rare. Nothing like listening to some cowboy sing "There's a Tear in My Beer" and then I'd followup with "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morisette!

I don't think I've ever been to a good Karaoke bar. They never have ANYTHING good, and I'm talking really popular stuff, nothing obscure. I still have fun, but the music is always awful.

Once, I was on a cruise ship and went to the Karaoke bar. Nightmarish. First of all, there was no one in it, and this one guy would do every other song. He would do only songs that had a girls name in the title, presumably in some kind of desperate fishing for the attention of a Mandy or Maggie May (or Caroline) who just happened to be single AND on a cruise alone AND in a sparsely populated bar at that very moment. He probably got laid that way once in 1990.

I sing What's Up by 4 Non Blondes... Only because I can sing it off key and no one cares, they are too busy singing along really loudly to I TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND I GET REAL HIGH. I have also been REALLY drunk and sang give me one reason by Tracey Chapman.
