Yeah, there were a ton of people in the tent to say the least. Alison came out in an awesome red dress and they opened with "Utopia" (I think) and also played a number of altered versions of their Supernature songs amid the Seventh Tree material.

Goldfrapp in 2008 were good but not great. Their set was heavy on Seventh Tree and seemed pretty short. The tent was fucking packed though.

Only time I would have liked to see him was in 2001 with Janes Addiction. He blew in 2006 when he was a special guest for Hybrid. And his DJ set in 05 that I saw part of was lame. I did get his autograph in 08 though backstage.

I am not even a particular fan of theirs, but I thought Rilo Kiley was FANTASTIC in 2008. They're extremely good performers, and a very tight band. Also, the timing of their playing on the outdoor stage was terrific and it looked absolutely beautiful.

were the presets good in 2009?

they were pretty fun, even though the vocals are annoying. if you LOVE presets though, you would have LOVED this set. i just don't LOVE them.

Were Rilo Kiley/Jenny Lewis good in 2005? I have a curse on me that seems to never allow me to catch them/her at the polo fields because of conflicts.

she was fucking adorable. i don't really know much of her music, but my friend made me see her and i'm glad she did. jenny was having a blast.

Was New Order good in 2005?

it was good because i was fucking READY to see new order. it was this perfect storm of my life going through a break-up and crying my way through new order, only to then feel completely empowered through NIN.

his vocals were off. i remember him being sick. still though, i enjoyed the set, despite all the nin fans who didn't seem to care. love will tear us apart was amazing for me. regret was great for me also. i liked crystal a lot more live. blue monday was hilarious because they started off with kylie minogue's "can't get you out of my head" and then mixed it into blue monday.

pretty sure this is them:

New Order was a bit lackluster in 2005 for the reasons above. Bernard had an injured arm or leg (can't remember which) and couldn't dance around as much as he normally does (according to him). I remember they did a couple Joy Division songs, but it wasn't as good as I'd hoped. Blue Monday/Can't Get You Outta My Head was cool though.

Were The Raveonettes good in 2005?

I enjoyed their set this year, but damn that volcano!!!

The Raveonettes in 2005 was a lot of fun. They were mid-day and it was pretty hot, so I sat back in one of the shade tents that they had facing the main stage. They got a good groove going, but I left a bit early to catch all of M83.

Interpol in 2007?

They were cool, I wish I was able to see Sonic Youth though while retaining my awesome spot at the main stage for Bjork, since I've seen Interpol so many times.

Anyone see Wolf Eyes in 05?

It was so awesome and hilarious. I watched the second half, and there were maybe 20 people in the tent. People would walk in, stare for a few seconds and then walk away with their hands on their ears. One of the guys had a guitar neck rigged with pickups and was playing that. It was one of the more intense noise shows I've seen, considering the location and the crowd. Also, the Locust played not long after them. That year was good for brutality.

cool thread. how was Muse in 2004?

Muse in 2004 was one of the best Coachella sets I've ever seen. My friend and I were going to get stuff signed by Belle and Sebastian, and I heard Muse start up. I wasn't familiar with their music but remember Mountmccabe posting about how excited he was for them, and I figured why not. They put on an incredible show, and really dropped my jaw.

They were much more experimental (and face painting themselves) in 06 than when i saw them in 2009 at the Wiltern. I prefer how they do it now.

Was New Order good in 2005?
No. This was my first Coachella and I was a huge New Order/Gang of Four fan at the time. By the way, Peter was wearing all baggy adidas clothing (like, wtf?) and it just wasn't up to par in my eyes. I was hoping to catch some New Order songs by Bad Lieutenant this year but damn that volcano!

FC Kahuna in 2003

Replying a bit late, but FC Kahuna in 2003 were actually pretty decent. They opened the Sahara (one of the years it was laid out completely differently). The entire inside of the tent was in the shade so it was relatively cool inside, and the majority of the crowd was spread out either sitting with their group or dancing near their group. It was a fun way to start the day with some quality, mellow, "live" EDM. Nothing to go ape shit over, but lots of fun.

Don't know what to say regarding 2008 but this year's performance is a personal favorite. The whole mood just changed when the sun set and Hot Chip began their set with One Pure Thought. It was a dance party and I never expected the group to attract that many people...well perhaps most were there to get a good spot for MGMT. However, I have heard some say their performance in the Sahara in '08 was a more suitable and intimate setting for their music

I don't think I see this one from early on in the thread answered, so: JAW-DROPPINGLY GOOD. They were in the Mojave back when that stage was only like half the size it is now and actually had not-that-sucky acoustics. All that beautiful noise in that particular environment, when no one really knew who the hell they were (most of the people around me were just like "oh we've heard they're good?") = epic! Definitely in my top 3 performances of 2001 (along w/ The Roots and St. Germain)...

Was Justice better in 2007 or 2008?

It was the same fucking set, so 2007 since it was their debut of the "LIVE" show.

However, I have heard some say their performance in the Sahara in '08 was a more suitable and intimate setting for their music

they were better in 07

cool thread. how was Muse in 2004?

I was really excited to see them, it was just too bad it was in the middle of the afternoon. They went on around 4 pm I think. There wasn't a huge crowd for them, and they didn't get to have any sort of a light show. But they played most of Absolution, which I was obsessed with at the time, so it was a great singalong set.

Edit: I saw someone earlier mention the confetti canons - I forgot they also threw big beach balls into the crowd with eye balls on them. I got one at the end and wanted to keep it forever but I think I lost it by the end of the weekend.

Was Black Star or MF Doom good in 2005?

I didn't know Black Star's songs that well, but I really enjoyed their set. If I remember correctly, it was near the very end of the night, even after the headliner that year? I was up towards the front and there was a very dedicated group of fans eating that shit up all around me. It felt like a very intimate performance because it didn't feel like a lot of people were there for it, but I could be wrong.

Was Hot Chip better in 2008 or 2010?

2008 for sure.

2007 was great cause I believe that was the first time I had seen them and didn't know what to expect. A lot of people were slowly trickling into the Sahara throughout their set. I remember being pleasantly surprised that it was a full live band playing.

2008 was just ridiculous. Everyone knew who they were by then, and the tent was PACKED. I was standing by the back for some fresh air, and everyone was in such a groove. People were climbing up the sides of the Sahara tent and hanging by the rafters dancing. It was packed and hot and sweaty and perfect. I still don't think it was night time out. Maybe late afternoon/early evening. And I saw dreadlocks boy freaking out in there as well. I always associate him with that set. Definitely one of my favorite Hot Chip sets ever.

2010 was definitely good, but was one of my least favorite times seeing them. Not to say they were bad, I've just seen them a lot better. It was fun seeing them on the Outdoor stage tho because it seemed much grander.

Hot Chip played in the Mojave in 2007. That was a great set. I really enjoyed their 2010 set too. The crowd kinda sucked though... you could tell a lot of them were waiting for MGMT.

2007.

Was Black Star or MF Doom good in 2005?

Was Flying Lotus good in 2009?

BlackStar was amazing. Mos wanted to keep going but the mic was cut off because of the time. MF Doom on the other hand I walked out of because he was boring.

How were Oasis in 2002?

not great, but the reason I went to coachella for the first time! Liams voice was shoddy, and they were touring behind SOTSOG which was a really weak album. Plus a short set of prob 1hr 20 min.... Not a lot of time for cuts off their debut or b-sides from the same era. Heres the set list apparently:

i thought the set was okay. they played middle of the day at the outdoor, and it was fucking hot. they worked in a couple of songs from the latest album... i think helicopter and revival.

"never stops" was fantastic. such a simple song, but so perfect.

what else? i will say that bradford showed the most personality out of everyone i saw that weekend.

oh man i kind of regret missing their set...never stops and helicopter are songs that have been on repeat for awhile.

Oh well hopefully there is another Atlas Sound album coming soon because I love Bradfords voice.

Thanks!

Was Paul Oakenfold good in 2001? I was there but I barely remember his set. I just remember being so tightly packed it was hard to breathe. Janes Addiction took forever to come out and Weezer got light sticks thrown at them

Did anybody see Teddybears in 07?Yeah, we were walking by and I was reeled in by the costumes for only one song. It happened to be the last song, "Punkrocker", of course. Which would have been cool, but a lady (Aimee Echo) was taking over for Iggy's vocals, and it was alright, but we kept on walking before the song was over.

I saw both sets and I would have to say 08' was better but both sets were unbelievably amazing.

Did anyone see Band of Horses in 09'?

Eh Wasn't that great. It was windy up there on the Main Stage so he was trainwrecking even more than usual (DJs on the main stage with vinyl seemed to have problems, even Mixmaster Mike with Beastie Boys in 2003), but he busted out a trance anthems of course which were of the '00-'01 era.

Was 4HERO or LUKE VIBERT good in 1999?
