if you've wanted a tablet but could not afford one or if you just want to take advantage of this great deal! HP dropped support for the HP Touchpad, their new tablet. SO they are doing a liquidation, $99 for a 16gb Touchpad and $129 for a 32gb Touchpad! WebOS and about 300 apps currently available. Sale goes from now till Aug 22 at your local retailer (walmart, Sams Club, Target, Radioshack, etc) but not Best Buy

I recently babbled about my high school and its use of the rebel theme up until the year after I graduated in 1994. Race is still a very heated issue in the suburbs. I came across this blog post which I think was an excellent read. The year the blogger attended is also around the time of a year book picture that was very disturbing. In 1979 some kids apparently dressed up in black face and two of their friends as KKK members about to lynch the folks in black face. Not only was this in the late 70's but they let these kids into a school function dressed this way, took their picture and put it in the yearbook. Also for context the school was built in the mid 50's and I think it was named in the heart of the civil rights movement in the mid to late 60's. In a 99% white school in a neighborhood that is probably now 50/50 black/white.

Here's the blog from 2008. The comments are full of angry white folk too. I'll be visiting my beautiful home suburb of Lansing, IL this weekend. :)

Here is a link to the yearbook from 1979 you can go through the first few pages and see how heavily they embraced this theme. Not just with our flag and mascot but throughout the school.

Had one gone inside the school building, they would have seen gray and red everywhere, along with Ritchie Rebel logos, lots of rhetoric about the Confederacy and “the South will rise again” and even a Confederate battle flag painted on the floor at the basketball arena’s center court.

Scientists Discover a Diamond as Big as a Planet

Back in the 1920s, the great Jazz Age writer F. Scott Fitzgerald published a story titled The Diamond as Big as the Ritz — the Ritz-Carlton hotel, that is, which even in those pre-high-rise days was a pretty hefty chunk of real estate. Fitzgerald wasn't a science-fiction writer, so he didn't have to explain how such a thing could possibly exist. Lucky thing too since it couldn't. Not on earth, anyway.

But the universe is a vast and strange place, where all sorts of seemingly impossible things happen routinely. Still, a paper just published in Science seems to teeter on the edge of utter fantasy: 20 trillion miles away lies a star more massive than the sun but only 15 miles across, spinning around more than 100 times a second — and orbiting that star is a diamond the size, not of a mere luxury hotel, but of the planet Jupiter. Oh, and the diamond used to be a star too, before it turned into a planet. (See photos of the universe, to scale.)

Surprisingly, perhaps, most of that story is old news to astronomers. The fast-spinning star is a pulsar, a superdense chunk of matter left over when a massive star explodes, then collapses in on itself. If what's left over weighs more than three times as much as the sun, it collapses forever, forming a black hole. But if it's a bit smaller, it turns into a whirling neutron star whose intense magnetic field generates a beacon of radio waves that sweeps across the universe like the beam of a lighthouse — in this case, flashing more than 10,000 times every minute. When pulsars, as they became named, were discovered in the 1960s, they were nicknamed LGM for "little green men." Nobody could imagine a natural force that could generate such a rapid, precisely timed series of radio blasts.

The natural explanation wasn't long in coming though, and astronomers have since found hundreds upon hundreds of pulsars. They've also found that slight variations in the timing of the pulses can be indirect evidence for objects orbiting a pulsar. The gravitational pull of, say, a planet, will make the radio flashes arrive closer together, then farther apart, then closer, in a regularly changing rhythm. In fact, the first planets ever discovered beyond our solar system were found this way in 1992, but thanks to the intense radiation coming off a pulsar, there's no chance life could exist on them.

All of this has long since become a standard part of astronomy textbooks. What's not standard at all is the idea of a star actually turning into a planet — but that, says Matthew Bailes, astronomer at Australia's Swinburne University of Technology and lead author of the Science paper, isn't as crazy as it sounds. He suggests that originally this odd couple was a pair of ordinary stars orbiting each other. One was more or less like the sun, the other perhaps 10 times as massive. The bigger star exploded, leaving behind a neutron star. Meanwhile, the sunlike star aged in the normal way, eventually swelling, blowing off its outer layers and collapsing to the white hot ember known as a white dwarf star. That's just what will happen to our sun in 5 billion years or so.

But the sun isn't right next to a neutron star. If it were, its outer gas layers would have been sucked in by the fierce gravity of its companion. The sun itself — or its white dwarf corpse, anyway — could have spiraled in as well, eventually coming in so close that its "year" was only a little more than two hours long. The neutron star's gravity would now be so powerful that the white dwarf star would lose even more layers, leaving behind only its inner core — about the mass of Jupiter and most likely made largely of oxygen and carbon, two elements that are forged in the nuclear fires at the heart of an aging star.

Pot Brownie Mix-Up Gives Canadian Office Workers Unexpected High
by Eyder Peralta

Be careful what you eat at work, because you don't know exactly what's in that batch of delicious brownies.

That's the lesson a group office drones learned in Victoria, British Columbia. The Vancouver Sun reports that three people ate some brownies brought to the office by a co-worker. After a while, the workers started complaining of "light-headedness, numbness in the limbs and disorientation."

They thought they'd been poisoned, so police were called and the workers were taken to a hospital. The Sun reports on what happened next:

Investigation led to the office refrigerator and some brownies which, it turned out, had been baked with marijuana. Further inquiries revealed all three workers had eaten the baked treats.

The brownies had been brought in by one woman who had discovered them in her freezer at home. Her son had baked the chocolate treats a year ago, stored them in the freezer and forgotten about them.

The investigating officer confronted the son, who admitted to baking the brownies.

The CBC reports that police will not press charges against the woman's son, "because there was no criminal intent." He will be placed in a "restorative justice program."

The three workers are doing fine, though we're betting they may be a little hungry.

A similar scenario happened to my mom in Mexico when she and my dad were chaperoning college students in the early 70's. I was almost 4. The kids had made brownies and put them in the fridge. My dad had to talk my mom down once he figured out what had happened.

Need some perspective on two kid related items:

First, how traumatic would it be for a 9 year old and a 5 year old to move cities (same state)? Now, consider that the new city would have more family and friends of Mom & Dad (wife & I) and although our kids would have to make new school friends, they would have a head-start on friends close to their age that we already know in the new city? To further complicate things, remember our two daughters have only been with our family for a year and a half now, and in addition to a permanent family, this time has been the first opportunity to make good school friends of their own in a community they can call home.

I lived in the same house for my first 18 years and only know what it’s like to NOT move.

Actually, I’ll stop there for now and get perspective on the other item later.

I'm an only child, and we moved from Houston to the DFW area the summer before I started 7th grade. I was totally fine with it. I had close friends in Houston, but for some reason I liked the idea of starting new somewhere. I don't know how I would have reacted when I was younger.

I liked the timing of our move because I didn't have to start somewhere new in the middle of the school year.

Kids are resilient. You, as parents, give them the strongest sense of home and stability. It may be hard at first, but they will adjust.

Izzy had to change schools and now after two weeks is comfortable and making new friends everyday.

Don't feel guilty. In the long run, you have to do what is best for the whole family.

Drinkey McDrinkerstein

Actually, I’ll stop there for now and get perspective on the other item later.

I think a lot of it depends on the individual and his/her personality.

My parents moved me six times across 7,000 miles during the ages of 7 to 13, and it fucked me up pretty well. I got to the point where I was creating completely fictitious personalities because it was just easier than introducing myself to yet another group of new classmates. After the second move, I experienced my first episode of clinical depression, wherein I was literally unwilling to get out of bed for two months straight and stopped eating completely.

But I have expat friends whose families moved an equal amount and ended up fairly happy and well-adjusted. So who knows.

I think they are young enough that it shouldn't be too big of an issue, especially if you are moving them to an area with more family/support. Frederick Douglas was a slave who was educated by his master. It seems like a good thing, however, once he learned that his human rights were being violated, he was miserable because there was nothing he could do about it. In this case he was better off not knowing.

Another example is global warming. For years humans polluted this earth not knowing it was bad. Now we know pollution is bad, but it is out of our control to stop it. It would be better off if we just did not know about global warming.

Another example is paying taxes. If one does not know how their tax money is being spent, then they will not oppose it. However if one finds out that their tax money is being used for something they don't like, they will be angry. But there is nothing they can do to change how tax money is spent. It would be better if they just didn't know how their tax money was spent.

More or less, the prompt asks for an essay that either agrees or disagrees with the idea that knowledge is a burden. The best part is that for SAT essays, you can be completely factually wrong and it doesn't hinder your score. So I can't even comment to say, "well. except that Frederick Douglass, without a doubt, used knowledge to escape slavery."

The easier path to writing a basic essay response is to write why individuals should take action - it's just riper for arguing a point. I doubt any of these dopes actually have thought about that question prior to that prompt.

She doesn't try to refute global warming, she just thinks it's beyond the point of remedy for whatever reason. That's not an instantly unreasonable pronouncement in itself, given our current trajectory.

The Frederick Douglass one is a bad example for the reason you offer, but she's reaching for an idea that's got some pedigree. The tax example has perfect Machiavellian logic to it.

I'm glad she's not in politics or anything like, but objectively speaking, her argument's a good one and philosophers have been toying with it for centuries. Or at least since the first Matrix film was released.

Well maybe she's taking advantage of the SAT's blanket invitation to make up hilarious facts.

This is my general strategy on these things. It's pretty fun.

In my recent GMAT experience, one AWA essay prompted me to discuss the relationship between professional success and personal happiness. I created three completely fictitious companies with supposed work-life balance programs for examples in my essay. One of the programs involved bringing children who are too young for school to their parents' factory workplace and engaging them by using them as child labor and giving them basic factory floor tasks that require small hands.

I received a perfect score for my essay.

Before I graduated with my BA, I had to pass a "Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam," which is required for graduation either by my individual school or the entire California State University system (I suspect the latter). I don't even recall what the actual prompt was, because the article that they had us read to use as a basis for our response was so poorly written and contradictory (to the point of being just plain confusing), that I felt like I had to dissect. So instead of responding to the prompt itself I wrote a 3-page criticism of the piece of writing we were given. I only got an 8/10.

And I didn't do any drugs and barely drank. My friends refused to smoke me out and I didn't have the time to imbibe. Best party of my life, but totally counter to my usual party nature.

I chose not to smoke. I tried to drink, but so much was going on I barely caught a buzz. Most definitely a wonderful time.

I need like 3 hours of random party visualizer crap in a movie format by friday night for a charity theme night event that I found out about 2 hours ago.

I need to be able to put it on something portable that plays movies like my zune and hook it up to a HDTV through a USB port.

I don't even know where to begin figuring this out.

Michael Faherty, 76, died at his home in Galway on 22 December 2010.

Deaths attributed by some to "spontaneous combustion" occur when a living human body is burned without an apparent external source of ignition

I remember reading up on that in the 8th grade. There are several apparent cases that have been documented. I haven't read up on it recently, but at the time it wasn't accepted as the cause, just suggested because they couldn't find a cause.

I decided this weekend that I want to go back to school to get a degree in estimating. I know that some of my credits are transferable from when I went to business school in Oregon 17 years ago. I tried finding the number for the school I went to, finally found one but they have been closed for awhile. There is a new school in the facility but they informed me they may or may not have my transcripts. To find out I have to fill out a form and fax it over with my credit card information and they will research. The fact that they want me to fax my credit card information makes me wonder what kind of backwoods place I am dealing with. I can't just order this shit online? Ugh.

I did a search but couldn't find any information on this. My friend forwarded the following email to me, so if there are any of you locals out there that can show support I encourage you guys to show up:

Hi Friends. On Oct 5, the Indio City Council will be voting on a historic agreement with Goldenvoice which will keep the festivals in the valley for many years to come. To celebrate the vote, I am inviting as many of our supporters as possible to come attend the meeting. The plan is to fill the council chambers with as many people as possible. I hope that you can attend the meeting and celebrate with us. The meeting is at 4pm on Wednesday, Oct 5. I will update you on any details again next week. I hope to see you there!

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Bank-of-America-to-charge-5-apf-1381425092.html

Bank of America said Thursday that it plans to start charging a $5 monthly fee when customers make debit card purchases. The fee will be rolled out starting early next year.

Paying to use a debit card was unheard of before this year and is still a novel concept for many consumers. But several banks have recently introduced or started testing debit card fees. That's in addition to the spate of other unwelcome changes checking account customers have seen in the past year.

Yes it is gunz. Depending on the angle, the cat looks normal, but head on, wow. The cat is actually 12 years old so I sort of thought it odd I have never seen it before. Thanks for the complement btw ... cr****

According to an article posted on News Telegram.com, a cat named Frankie and Louie has earned an odd Guinness World Record; he has become the longest living Janus cat. Not familiar with the term? A Janus cat is a cat that, despite the odds, is born with two faces.

Named after the Roman god Janus who had two faces, Janus cats have an incredibly low prognosis for living after they are born; more often than not, they die within a few hours or days after birth.

Frankie and Louie (cleverly given two names because he has two faces) has overcome those odds and earned his world record; he has lived for 12 years with his condition.

Frankie and Louie's life is a little odd, to say the least. He has one head, two faces, three eyes (two normal eyes and a non-functioning third eye in the middle), two noses and two mouths. And all the body parts are operated by one brain. Talk about having a lot going on!

The nature of this Dodd-Frank regulation was to shift the cost burden of using a debit card from everyone to just those who actually use them.* What was a historically ~ 45 cent on average swipe fee paid by retailers on each debit card transaction is now capped at 12 cents.* Yes, some retailers charged extra if you use a debit card, but most didnít, instead making that up by increasing the cost of their product, passing it along to all of us.

It's criminal that they are allowed to still write loans at this point. Fuck them and their "creative" ways of sidestepping regulations. I won't be surprised when someone goes all fight club on them.

PlayaDelWes
09-29-2011, 05:01 PM
Please explain how that is sidestepping. Even if the government or a not-for-profit operated the nation's Payment and ACH systems, there would still be a cost. Instead of burying the cost in what you buy, Dodd Frank now brings transparency to those consumers.

I just did the most awesome or most stupidest thing i've ever done. I went to the bank and drove up to the ATM there were maybe 6 cars ahead of me and none behind. The dude in the car in front of me had his window down and his hand resting there. The line of cars moved up. The dude with his hand out the window moved his hand to the steering wheel to move up with the line. I see something fall from the open window of his car. I move my car up and see that it was at least $1000 all in hundreds.

I put my car in park, got out, scooped up the money, walked up to him, and gave it back to him. Somehow he didn't even notice that he had dropped it. So I mean.....

I hope karma will get me? (unlikely :/ )

No, that'll go towards something. He would have noticed as soon as he got to the ATM. He probably(eventually) would've asked you if you had seen it. Then you'd have to lie, which is just wrong and would go against you're wanting of karma.

Question to all you smart phone users. Nick and I went to the football game on Sunday and today someone sent Nick a photo of us at the game. It isn't a number I recognize from the people we went with, and it's weird that it was sent to him and not me since they were all people I know and have numbers for. He has a smart phone though, so can someone synch up with someone elses phone to get their contact info just by sitting next to them?

If you have Bump, it's possible to trade numbers/info with someone by literally bumping your phones together, but I've never heard of such a thing. Unless, you know, someone's stalking you.

I'm pretty sure that's not the case though.

Yeah, I am pretty sure that's not the case either, we may have just been so drunk we don't remember giving the person his number, although in most situations I would give my number. Anything is possible though, especially since we don't even remember posing for the photo.
