I couldn't find a music equipment/gear thread so I'm posting this here.

Last night I was playing guitar when my amp made a loud POP! and shut off. It wouldn't turn back on - I tried different outlets, no power at all. I didn't see any problems when I looked at the speakers, but there was a faint smell of smoke, like something had burned out.

It's a Line 6 Duoverb combo amp. Any guitar techs/ex-roadies out there know what the problem might be? Is it fixable?

I have been tempted to start a thread called "Shit My Father in Law Emails Me". He's 82. What is it with really old people? The stuff he emails me is always -- every single time -- forwarded from someone else. That "someone else" is almost always a retired military officer. It is almost always some sort of internet hoax that he and his email buddies are taking seriously. I have introduced him to snopes on more than one occasion, but it doesn't seem to take.

Occasionally it veers into anti-Obama racist birther tripe, but usually it's just harmless crap.

I have decided not to start the thread because it gets old.

I'm very glad it's happening, but I have to say, the helicopters, road closures, checkpoints and cop searches everywhere are really starting to get in on me. I'm really glad we only have to put up with it for a few days, because man, it's starting to feel like The Suburbs video or something.

Anyway. Yes, important, and awkward, and a bit tense, but very cool that nobody's managed to say or do anything stupid. The wreath laying thing was a really lovely moment. Nice bit of catharsis for all concerned, and it's a cool thing to be able to see happen, even if only on TV.

Best headline by far:

I just thought of a new app for smart phones. Most of them (I guess, mine does) have a bar code scanner in them. I can take mine to the store, scan a bar code, and it will advise me if there is another place close that has the item for cheaper. Why can’t ticketmaster offer something like that? You buy a ticket from a scalper but before you give him money, you scan your ticket and at the very least Ticketmaster could tell you if the ticket was valid and if it has already been scanned. Just a thought. Cr****

Not personally, but it's called scientific study and research you ding dong.

Throughout the years, the science of secondhand smoke has driven the secondhand smoke policy engine from separate smoking and nonsmoking sections to separately ventilated smoking rooms to 100% smokefree environments. We now know that 53,800 people die every year from secondhand smoke exposure. This number is based on the midpoint numbers for heart disease deaths (48,500), lung cancer deaths (3,000), and SIDS deaths (2,300) as calculated in the 1997 California EPA Report on Secondhand Smoke. And children are at significant risk to many acute and chronic diseases as a result of secondhand smoke exposure.
http://www.no-smoke.org/getthefacts.php?id=13

As crappy as CNN is, they wouldn't throw numbers around like that without some government report backing up the claim.

Didn't know where to post this, so I felt this thread was generic enough to do so.

I was very lucky enough to score Jeff Mangum tickets this fall. A few weeks after I bought them, I received a "save the date" notice for an old childhood friend's wedding. Mangum takes place on the other side of the state as the wedding, so there's no way I can do both. I don't know what courtesy I'm expected to show in this event. The friend is someone I grew up with and hung out with regularly until college, but then after that, we grew apart and I only see the person maybe a small handful of times each year randomly when we bump into each other while going about our lives. The friend hasn't made a conscious effort to hang out with me for a good five years now, which I've become to feel a bit slighted by, and I think siding with the recluse musician over the absentee friend is the way to go here. What's the best way to save face in this situation when declining? It's the first wedding I've been invited to as an adult, so I feel a bit bad about that, too.

Hannahrain

I'm so sorry, ____, I've got a prior engagement and can't make the wedding. I'd really love to see you and celebrate/congratulate you in person/jubilant verb of choice, though - could I take you two out for a celebratory dinner etc etc etc?

Does the Wedding have a Open Bar?? If not, go see Jeff Mangum.

NoNoAge
05-30-2011, 05:26 PM
No idea if it does, but I'd have to take advantage of it if I went because I'd not know any of their friends, probably wouldn't have a date and it'd just be really awkward for me to sit through.

I like hannahrain's suggestion, though, so thanks for that. I think the big issue is getting over my guilt over doing something I want to do vs. doing something I don't want to do but feeling that it would be impolite not to.

I agree with Steve and Jen. It's fine. If you would rather go see Mangum then go to the wedding, then go see Mangum. There's no reason to take up a seat at a wedding of an old friend who you're not really that close to anymore and have mixed feelings about. US police to search for bodies at 'mass grave' site
Map

US police are to search a rural house in eastern Texas, where they believe there is a mass grave.

US media say there may be up to 30 dismembered bodies including children buried there.

Liberty County Sheriff's Department Spokesman Rex Evans says the office received an anonymous report on Tuesday that there were bodies in the home.

Police are seeking a search warrant for the property, whose residents are said to be "uncooperative".

Federal agents seek search warrant for Texas house
Updated: Tuesday, June 7, 6:26 PM
LIBERTY, Texas — Law enforcement descended on a rural Texas farmhouse Tuesday after receiving an anonymous tip that multiple dismembered bodies were buried there, and a sheriff’s spokesman said officials were seeking a search warrant for the property.

Liberty County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Rex Evans told The Associated Press his office received a tip earlier Tuesday that there were bodies in the home about 70 miles northeast of Houston. Evans told the Houston Chronicle that no bodies had been recovered shortly before 6 p.m.

The Chronicle reported that the tip came from a psychic.

“We only received information of a possible crime scene here at this location,” Evans told the newspaper. “Upon our arrival we determined that there was a need for a search warrant. Once that warrant arrives at the scene we will further our investigation.”

Footage shot from a television news helicopter showed 15 vehicles, mostly belonging to law enforcement, parked along a rural road intersection near a farmhouse. The area around the home was heavily wooded.

FBI spokeswoman Kim Barkhausen in Houston said the agency has been asked to assist in an investigation, but declined to discuss details of the anonymous tip or the search.

No bodies found in Texas home after psychic tip

By JUAN A. LOZANO, Associated Press 7 mins ago

.

HARDIN, Texas – Deputies who swarmed a rural Texas neighborhood Tuesday to search a farmhouse where a person claiming to be a psychic told officials multiple bodies were buried found no evidence of even a single homicide, a sheriff's official says.

Liberty County Sheriff's Capt. Rex Evans said there was no indication of bodies being anywhere on the property about 70 miles northeast of Houston. Officials ended their search Tuesday night and went home, with the focus of the investigation now turning to the tipster who led local law enforcement and FBI agents to the home.

The sheriff's office had received two calls from the person, officials said. Evans said authorities took the tip seriously in part because the caller had details about the interior of the house that only someone who had seen it could have known.

He said authorities were working to track down the tipster and determine how she had such detailed information on the house. He said authorities had a name and number for the woman.

Asked if authorities thought the tip was a hoax, Evans said only that they found no bodies or anything to indicate a homicide had occurred there.

"We are going to continue our investigation and find out how this individual had this information in the first place," Evans said.

He said no decision would be made on charges until the caller could be questioned and the district attorney consulted.

The investigation began after the sheriff's office received a tip from a psychic who claimed that many bodies, including those of children, were at the home, said Liberty County Judge Craig McNair, the county's top elected official.

A quick search Monday night turned up nothing, authorities said. But the tipster called back Tuesday morning to say deputies had the wrong house, Evans said.

McNair said deputies found blood on a back door and detected a foul odor coming from the house, leading to the search warrant.

"We have to take tips like this very seriously," McNair said.

McNair said the owners of the home are apparently long-haul truck drivers who were renting the house to someone else. McNair did not have any information on the renters, but he said there was apparently an attempted suicide at the house a couple of weeks ago that could have explained the blood on the door. He did not know who was involved in the suicide attempt.

For us "nerds" cr****

Wednesday is World IPv6 Day, a clunky name for an experiment that should be invisible to Web surfers but plays a critical role in keeping the Internet running smoothly.

One of the Net's foundational layers is the Internet Protocol, a global communications standard used for linking connected devices together. Every networked device you own -- your PC, smartphone, laptop, tablet and other gizmos -- has a unique IP address. The problem is that we're running out of them. The current system, called IPv4, has the technical capacity to handle 4.3 billion addresses. They're almost all used up: The last remaining batch was assigned out in February.

Some of the photos are of women taking showers. "The victim would think that it was a valid system message coming from the computer," Goodrich said.

Court: Lap dances aren't tax-exempt (http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Court-Lap-dances-aren-t-tax-exempt-1417984.php#ixzz1OtG1FeYC)

The club sought expert testimony from a cultural anthropologist who researched the field of exotic dance, visited the club and reviewed the dances depicted on the Nite Moves DVD. She offered an opinion that "the presentations at Nite Moves are unequivocally live dramatic choreographic performances."

The unnamed expert further concluded that the private dances performed at the club, such as lap dances, involved "similar kinds of movements" as those portrayed by the dancers on stage and therefore also "qualified as choreographed performances."

The five-member court disagreed. The record from the Tax Tribunal hearing showed the club's dancers were not required to have formal training and relied on videos or suggestions from other dancers "to learn their craft."

If the mid-week finale last week was really "the beginning of the end" of South Park, I can only hope that it will provide them with more time to devote to other projects like this.

After 6 months of owning a particular netbook I only read the product specs now. Having settled for the "fact" no on-board speakers were on the machine and using only headphones (this being one of the few machines I never bothered taking apart), I discovered speakers did exist but because I wiped Windows and threw a Linux distro on there from the start I was unaware of an audio driver issue. I figured I could code a workaround to get the speakers working. I did so. I was so excited to be able to use speakers on this machine for the first time because HP claimed they had HD audio and guess what? The speakers sound like shit anyway.

Moral of the story: Don't try anything. Ever.

If it is a band then the source is ignored. Jethro Tull, for example is filed under J.

If it is a solo artist then it is filed under their (assumed) last name and, well, the source is ignored. Frank Black is filed under B, even though that is not his real name.

So what I am saying is yes, it matters if it is a solo performer or a band but it does not matter where the name comes from or what it is.

This would be awesome. Taking iphone photos at concerts is pointless anyway. I mean, how many blurry, poorly-lit, barely-recognizable photos does one person need anyway? Put the phone away, stop blocking other people's line of sight, and just enjoy the experience.

Why would I want to enjoy the experience when I could be checking my facebook or twitter, checking in on 4square, taking a shitty photo or talking to my friends.

I saw someone playing Tetris on their phone at a show once. Also, there was the couple at Coachella this year lying on the grass playing scrabble on an ipad.

Then how would you feel if there were just pay phones and all phones were banned from concerts. Do you really need to call someone to chat when you are at a show? Just saying .... cr****

I guess people are just so much smarter then me. Some answers are so simple. Today on the Rush L show he said: “What a bunch of whiners. Wa wa you can’t find a job? If you can’t find a job because you don’t qualify for whatever reason or you just can’t find one, start your own damn business. You can then hire yourself and pay yourself. This is America and small businesses and job creation are up to you, not the government.” Geez why didn’t I think of that? “Oh Mr banker, I have been out of a job for a year now but can you lead me 500k so I can start a business?” cr****

Some of them are pretty well-priced. I might see if I can convert one into a standing bar for my living room.

I also particularly like the deli whodunit at the bottom called "A Brisket, A Casket." Something tells me the author wrote the book to suit the title and not the other way around.

We went over to a friends new place to watch some fights, having not been there before he came outside to greet us. During our hellos I say "Yo you smell like barbecue." He replies with, "You're fucking racist!", as he and my now wife start cracking up. I didn't know that was some sort of stereotype. If you haven't figured it out, he's black.

I've also told him I didn't believe he was a good swimmer. HAHAHA!! I love that guy.

Does anybody have any opinions on double majors vs a single major and a minor etc. I guess I'm a nerd now so I am enjoying planning out my school future. I'm thinking Anthropology/Linguistics or Latin American Studies, or something else in that direction

I'd go for the linguistics, which will eventually be a good base for you once you discover the other degrees are pretty much worthless. From there, you go on to study speech therapy and making a decent living. No offense or anything. I'm sure you're smart, but sometimes intelligent people make poor decisions by studying something they're merely interested in and not so much something they're interested in AND can build a career off of. Degrees to a certain extent can be meaningless however. What do you want to do with your life past college?

OnlyNonStranger
06-24-2011, 06:53 AM
No degree is worthless.

TedLeoMD
06-24-2011, 07:00 AM
Well yeah I'm not saying not getting a degree is the solution, but sometimes your career path isn't determined by your degree. Getting any degree is better than not, but it doesn't have to confine you to what you later do in life *unless you're in the medical or other highly specialized fields such as engineering, finance and so on.

I'm not saying give up the dream, Smurfy, but from what I've gathered, that's one of those highly discriminating fields where only the extremely intelligent and passionate thrive and succeed. Back to your original question, the first choice seems more reasonable only because the linguistics would parlay into a different, unexpected direction while the Latin American studies will probably just turn you into a glorified hippie with a Peru fetish.
