I just found a house in Indio that could easily sleep 16+, has a nice big private pool in the backyard, hot tub, video game room, pool table room, BMX track, bar that seats 11, fire pits and BBQ, and would be $1500 total. That's $94 per person, for the full weekend.

It's like some sort of compulsion at this point that every year within a day or two after the festival, I must immediately look at lodging options for the next year.

Just an update on this, which is that the guy isn't responding to e-mail or voicemail. So I think it's gonna be a no-go, sadly.

I went to this No Appointment MD place yesterday because my neck was hurting so bad I couldn't take it anymore. I get there and there was a big sign on the wall that said "WE ARE NOT A PAIN CLINIC, WE DO NOT PRESCRIBE NARCOTICS, WE REFER TO PAIN SPECIALISTS". So I start thinking, man, I hope this guy doesn't tell me to take a hot shower and some ibuprofen and send me on my way, I'll be pissed. The doc comes in, takes one look at me, says yeah, you look pretty stiff, then grabs my neck which had been in a spasm for about 12 hours at that point so I screamed. He says, man thats pretty bad, heres some scripts, one for 800mg ibuprofen, some flexeral, some vicodin, oh and you have some trouble sleeping, heres some lunesta too.

He spent exactly 4 minutes with me and I walked out with 4 scripts, with refills. Good thing I am not a junkie.

When I worked at my old company as the admin assistant my boss sent me out to buy gift cards for all the people in "support staff" roles, which just so happened to be all women. I got them all a $50 gift card at Target. Half the women bitched because they didn't consider themselves admin assistants, like it was below them, this mostly came from the marketing girls. I was tempted to tell them to go fuck themselves and give me the gift card, but that wouldn't have been very admin assistanty of me.

I.F.A.
04-28-2011, 10:33 AM
It is not my employer's responsibility to maintain my life balance for me.

But it is their responsibility to remain within the terms of your employment agreement regarding the hours for which you have been hired and payed for your work. I agree that much of the problem can be on the employee's end, but especially now employers are taking advantage. I have so many friends who are being ridiculously overworked - and in each case it's a matter of the company using the economy as an excuse to not fill positions and pile even more on to employees who are already maxing out their overtime. In some cases, especially with small businesses, the economy out might be true. However, in many cases it's become a catch-all excuse to cut costs merely for the sake of cutting costs. I do believe that it is an employer's responsibility to provide a sane working environment, and calls at 4 a.m. when they're paying you 9-5, expecting ridiculous amounts of OT as a matter of course, refusing to give and/or bullying people about taking their earned time off, or whatever, simply are not a part of that.

TomAz
04-28-2011, 10:52 AM
I don't disagree with any of that, but it's a two-way street.

Many companies have found they can still be productive with a smaller labor force and so are going lean-and-mean as you described. My view is that in most cases that is a short-term strategy that will be costly in the longer term. Companies that go real lean are not well prepared to grow once the economy comes back strong. When that happens, they will be scrambling to fill slots as burnt-out resentful employees go elsewhere. So I don't think it's a particularly good management approach although in the current environment some companies may not think they have any choice.

I.F.A.
04-28-2011, 11:04 AM
Absolutely agreed. It's short-sighted in the extreme; I mean, though I'm not an economist and realize it's a more complicated issue than just this, I think a large part of the reason that the bank bail-outs were ineffective is that that money was meant to be given to businesses to up hiring, etc.. However, the banks have become gun-shy about loans to small businesses, and subsequently many small businesses have become gun-shy about hiring. Large corporations take it as an opening to cry wolf about their financial situations and lay-off. The cycle continues. I mean, yes, big companies get in to dire straights too OBVIOUSLY, however I think a large part of that is the profit-over-people mentality that has again proliferated in the last several decades. We've come pretty far, and working conditions are certainly better than they were before the worker's and civil rights movements, however companies, as entities, are very quick to lose their perspective if it means a bigger bottom line.

And, I have to say, the "at least you have a job" thing just pisses me off. Yes, unemployment is terrible and needs to be addressed. It is not, however a blanket excuse to treat your employees poorly.

locachica73
04-28-2011, 11:06 AM
If you are working hourly, they need to pay you OT for any time they demand from you outside your normal work hours, end of story. OR they should switch you to salary.

True, but knowing myself I know that I probably am not going to keep a log for every 5 minute phone call or email that I have to respond to. And honestly, it isn't even that big of a deal, I was just making conversation because I really don't have much else to chat about.

While at lunch though I did come to another realization, if my bosses are going to be calling me after I get off work it will seriously cut into my drinking/smoking time. Dealing with these boys sober is one thing, under the influence is another. :(

chairmenmeow47

then why do they make it their "responsibility"? may be a poor word choice with responsibility. why talk about it as something the company does for it's employees when you have managers crying because they are being constantly called into meetings on vacation/sick leave? i'm lucky in that i can get my work done during the day, but i've also turned down management positions because i do not want their life. most of these managers become exceptionally unproductive and essentially useless.

PlayaDelWes
04-28-2011, 11:36 AM
I hear the ‘at least you have a job’ line from individuals (often on this message board) more than anyone else. If that’s the attitude of an employer and you don’t like it, you should seek another position with a company who supports work-life balance up to your liking. There are plenty of companies out there who not only put your personal life first, but go above and beyond to support it offering generous vacation, family leave, flexible hours, flexible locations, child-care, working-parent, and countless other programs. If anything, I’ve seen this trend swing in a positive direction over the last few years.

chairmenmeow47
04-28-2011, 11:41 AM
well like i said, i've been smart enough to keep myself out of these positions. also, free school & 5 weeks vacation is a hard thing to walk away from. our new management though guilts us about having so much time, but yet gets mad that we don't schedule enough of it even though we are allowed to roll it over to sick time, which is quite limited. my job sucks, but i want my free degree before i leave, or a bunch more money.

locachica73
04-28-2011, 12:12 PM
Managers typically get a 6 figure salary so asking them to take emergency late night calls is understandable in my mind, I do not make a 6 figure salary, I do not get 5 weeks of PTO a year and I do not have a company truck/laptop/gas card, etc. I use to go out during the week but my company decided they needed me here at 6:30 am everyday so I have already given up having a life outside of work during the week, even on Friday's I am in bed by 10. So yeah, I guess the idea of being continually tethered to my job even on my down time frustrates me considering I don't get any of the perks that go along with that. Unfortunately with all of these requests they haven't tried to offer up anymore money, and given my personality it isn't really that easy for me to go in and ask for more money. So I will do what they ask with a smile until I get tired of it and then probably go look for a different job.

We were in theatre together, and since I was on the theatre board my phone number was posted in the department). He's the only reservation I have about going to my reunion in October.

Not only was it creepy as all hell, but I had to try to explain to Nick why I was getting 6 am texts saying GM beautiful... He wanted to call the guy and have a pissing contest but I wouldn't let him.

Creepiness aside though... Is it so hard to check the clock before sending text messages? This guy is an hour before me in time so he sent that fucking text at 5:20 am his time. So I was awakened from a drunken sleep by this. FUCKER.

This happens a lot though, not just with creepy high school aquaintances. I get random texts from friends/family all throughout the night and/or early morning. I try to limit my texts to before 9 pm and after 10 am just in case they go to bed early or sleep late. Am I the only one who thinks it's rude to wake people up?

No, I use my phone as an alarm so I need to keep the sound on, plus, I shouldn't have to turn the sound on my phone off, what if my kids or family really need me? It should just be common courtesy to not send bullshit texts in the middle of the night.

Most phones allow you to turn off specific alerts, like text messages. You can still hear an alarm or a phone call. I keep my phone completely silent and my alarm still makes noise. If someone is texting you in an emergency instead of calling, it's probably not all that important.

Unfortunately thinking something is rude and coming up with a solution for yourself are two different things. Simply getting angry about something isn't going to stop it. I have a woman that i do freelance work with that calls me at all kinds of ungodly hours, like 7am on Sundays. it's usually not even urgent, she just picks up the phone as soon as things pop into her head.

right, but the word rape is still being bandied about on his forehead. it's really hard to get people involved in those situations. just sayin'

i really have no clue what happened. it's either a hate crime against a disabled person, or something happened (whether just tried to have sex or tried to force her to have sex) between the girl and the disabled person that prompted the beat down. or something else entirely.

it's an unfortunate situation. having been on the side of being accused of lying about rape, these things tend to make people uncomfortable to the point where they don't want to get involved.

*edit* but i also stopped people from beating the guy up. and hopefully someone will help the guy out, i'm just saying i can see why people might be hesitant to attach themselves to this issue.

Fuck Oracle in its stupid fucking face. Small victory for the good guys today. Open source software patents shouldn't even be legally possible and Oracle's hilarious 132 patent infringement claims against Google were just shortened by 98% to 3 claims to "streamline the case" by a federal judge. Oracle didn't even develop the fucking Java platform (it was developed by Sun Microsystems, who Oracle bought some time ago).

Enjoy losing this case you retarded patent-grubbing nutsacks.

Power to the people and all that jazz, Android is safe for now.

Yes to Ivy they're the one pushing the ID cards. Yes, I was kind of drunk but the post makes perfect sense. Oracle has been suing Google for Android's "illegal" use of Java and the judge, after getting a crash course in Java, basically told Oracle that 2% of their original 132 claims could be used in court and is going to have both parties decide if the case is even worth it now. Oracle will likely say yes because even if they get $5 from Google it will be worth it to them because they're a giant bag of dicks.

Not according to rule #4

So I can wear a skirt instead? or “Hey, no problem, I was gonna wear a dress anyways!”
You’re very clever, but you’re missing the point. Articles of clothing like skirts, shorts, kilts, and dresses don’t count, because people are encouraged to revel in the absence of pants, and not replace pants with other clothing. The point is to relax and enjoy the humor inherent in people not wearing pants. A good rule of thumb is to pretend like you were going to wear pants, and then just fail to put them on.

Cat Ear Headbands That Move When You Feel Feelings

Those fur tails that everyone had pinned to their bags was enough of a furry trend for us, but these animatronic cat ears take it to a whole other level. Japanese company Neurowear has come up with a wearable device that scans your brainwaves and responds by controlling a pair of fuzzy cat ears to get droopy, get perky, and vibrate with feline moodiness. Check out this video after the break...and tell us—creepy or cute? We can't decide.

If you were single, no major ties so just me: Would you leave your job with 400k in your pocket subject to a one time big hit on taxes or would you take 5k a month for the rest of your life with a guarantee if you died before 12 years, your beneficiary would get the remaining money? Cr****

I don't think we have a thread to diagnose each other's medical... issues, so here goes. 1) Does this ever happen to any of you? and 2) Should I be concerned?

From time to time (sometimes a few times a day) for a few months now (at least 6) I will become very disoriented. All of a sudden I'll look up and even though I know where I am (at home, mostly) everything looks very unfamiliar. And in those moments, if I try to imagine what the next room looks like, I can't. I have to look at everything and re-register it. And lately (maybe the last week or two) when this happens I get this really intense feeling that I'm actually somewhere else, but I cannot for the life of me figure out where.

I also get left and right confused quite a bit. At times, it feels as though my right hand and left hand have switched.

I do have a history of seizures, so I sometimes worry that its connected and something is up with my brain, but mostly I shrug it off and I would definitely not make a doctors appointment about it.

I would go to the doctor about that. What if it's early-onset Alzheimer's, or something equally as horrible? (I don't know the exact symptoms for that, just throwing it out there)

i'm not a doctor, but the sensation you are describing is jamais vu where a familiar situation feels completely new to you. this can be associated with different types of seizures. if you haven't already, you should talk to a doctor.

LOL, I have been going through that myself. Plus, the head of the reunion committee keeps sending me inappropriate texts. The angry high school girl in me wants to say something like "hey, maybe you have forgotten, I am the fat girl with a lisp you all made fun of back in the day". I really wish I could hire someone to be my angry voice for me.

Day One of Queenmageddon, and Dublin looks remarkably like a police state. There are 8,000 cops in the city performing random searches, and more soldiers besides - the city centre is completely inaccessible to the public, and the sound of helicopters is constant. There have been two bomb alerts since last night, producing at least one viable device, and scuffles with bunch of fatnecked halfwits called Eirigi resulted in some pepper spraying and two dozen arrests.

Things -

* Queeny's still alive. Three more days and we can all relax!

* Mostly everybody is glad she's still alive, and rather proud to be able to say so as an indicator that they're dude, totally over it.

* Sky News are hysterically ignorant about an awful lot of stuff, not least basic geography of Dublin. At one point, they suggested that the Queen was taking a "secret route" from one location to another for security reasons - there is literally only one practical route from A to B.

* Polls show that around 70% of the public still either approve or "Don't mind" that she's over here, which is neat.

* She laid a wreath at a monument to the original Irish rebels, executed for treason by the British, which was nice, albeit a token ceremony expected of every visiting head of state here. What was even nicer, she bowed her head for a moment's silence, which was a classy little gesture that I think is greatly appreciated.

* She planted a tree at the Presidential residence. She's 80 something, we shouldn't expect her to work for bed and board while she's over here. It was weird to see a very old lady shovelling while a load of people watched.

* The two kids who rang a big giant "peace bell" during this ceremony were both deaf and for some reason I found that bizarrely amusing.

So, all in all, it's a pain in the ass. But, you know, a constructive one.

One other thing - one of the very first people she shook hands with when she got off the plane was once a high ranking member of the IRA.

That's kind of an open secret though, and he's gone legit since, so it was kind of hilarious to hear all the Irish TV commentators try not to say it out loud for fear of incurring a libel case. Awkward.
