Geez that must be a knuck thingy. You always put two spaces after a period. Two spaces after a colon, and 1 space after a semi-colon. This coming from me which everyone (used) to dog so much on my posts.

The reason that two spaces after punctuation marks originally became standard formatting is that early typography consisted of "square" fonts in which letters all had an identical footprint (think printing press block letters) - the double spacing made it easier to read because breaks in sentences were more noticeable. Now fonts are designed differently, without the monotonous visual uniformity of early typeface, so as the purpose for the double spacing has decreased, so has the standard of using it.

it may SEEM unecessary today since we all type on computers, but it really isn't. i think it makes documents easier to read. amy explained it better than i could as to why there used to be double spaces.

but i do understand that on computers the amount of space between letters & punctuation is more standardized and also that it takes up storage space to have double space. i learned on two spaces though and it's a very hard habit to break.

Meanwhile, has anyone ever coached soccer or anything before? I'm thinking of doing this, but I know nothing about girls 'U8' soccer, soccer parents, what to do at practice, or even how to remember 11 new names. My daughter registered early, so she's playing regardless. Sounds like it can be fun to coach. Thoughts?

Hello AYSO Parents,

Good News-The U8 Girls Division is growing!! We have 30% more girls registered this year than last!! We are looking for 4 more coaches for this division. AYSO offers training and support for anyone that would like to spend more time with their daughters, learn and teach the game of soccer and volunteer to support a very worth while organization.

If you are interested in coaching for the upcoming season please email me and we can talk about this becoming a perfect fit for you!!

Unfortunately, if we are unable to get 4 more coaches we will be forced to place the last 32 girls that registered on a waitlist. Our goal at AYSO is to have ALL the kids play. Please help us achieve this goal-- please volunteer to coach.

I've coached my daughter several times....it's great fun, and an awesome way to spend time with your kid.

If you have the time, you should do it...for your daughter, and for the 32 other kids that will get put on a waiting list if there aren't enough coaches...it sucks when kids want to participate and the adults can't get it together to make it happen for them.

Even if you don't know the game well, AYSO provides training courses and you might get lucky and get an assistant that knows the game well.

With U-8s you'll have plenty to keep you occupied with just keeping the girls moderately focused. Likely won't be time to implement your offensive schemes, but you can always try!! I just finished a season with my daughter's U-14 team and it was great to finally get to coach girls that knew what they were doing. (14 year olds don't listen much better than 8 yr olds do though, maybe worse)

... EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM MST SATURDAY...

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM MST SATURDAY.

* AFFECTED AREA: THE SOUTH-CENTRAL ARIZONA DESERT AREAS IN MARICOPA COUNTY AND NORTHWEST... AND NORTH-CENTRAL PINAL COUNTY. THIS INCLUDES THE GREATER PHOENIX METROPOLITAN AREA... GILA BEND AND CASA GRANDE.

* TEMPERATURE: HOT DAYTIME TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM 110 TO 115 DEGREES WITH VERY WARM OVERNIGHT LOW TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM THE MID 80S TO AROUND 90 DEGREES ARE EXPECTED THROUGH SATURDAY.

* IMPACTS: EXCESSIVELY HOT TEMPERATURES CAN BE STRESSFUL TO ANIMALS AND HUMANS... MAKING IT HARD FOR THE BODY TO ACCLIMATE AND REMAIN HYDRATED. EXTREMELY WARM OVERNIGHT LOW TEMPERATURES... IN THE UPPER 80S TO NEAR 90S... DO NOT ALLOW THE BODY TO COOL DOWN PROPERLY OVERNIGHT... AND CAN MAKE EXTREME HEAT EVEN MORE DANGEROUS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

IT WOULD BE WISE TO COMPLETE ANY NECESSARY OUTDOOR ACTIVITY IN THE EARLY MORNING WHEN THE SUN AND HEAT ARE LESS INTENSE.

DURING PERIODS OF EXCESSIVE HEAT... INDIVIDUALS CAN SUFFER HEAT- RELATED ILLNESS WHEN THE BODY CAN NO LONGER COOL ITSELF.

IF YOU PLAN TO BE OUTSIDE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME IN THE AFTERNOON OR EARLY EVENING... STAY IN THE SHADE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND DRINK ABUNDANT AMOUNTS OF WATER. WEAR LIGHT-COLORED AND LOOSE-FITTING CLOTHING. IF YOU WEAR A WIDE-BRIMMED HAT... YOUR HEAD AND BODY WILL BE MUCH COOLER. STOP OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES... DRINK LOTS OF WATER OR OTHER NON-ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES... AND IF POSSIBLE... SPEND MORE TIME IN AIR-CONDITIONED OR WELL-VENTILATED PLACES.

You realize that most apartments up here don't even have swamp coolers, Tom? Your temperatures may be higher in Arizona, but air conditioning isn't something only rich people have there. For us Pac NW denizens, the temperature inside is often only a few degrees removed from the temperature outside. So yes, your area of the country is technically hotter. But also, go fuck yourself.

Sadly for half the price I paid for my tv I can get a new/better one of the same brand at this point. It would cost me half the cost of a new one to get this one fixed if it dies on my dime.

Sure it gets cold at night but we are at altitude and that plays into the weather of course. I didn't turn on my furnace for about 3 years but Tygerlady got cold so I finally hit the switch. It is also sunny here 300+ days a year. When I go skiing half the time I have to take my coat off because it was too hot. I would love to live in Hawaii. I spent 4 weeks there and loved every minute. I love the slight rain storms they get in the afternoons. It rains warm water. AWESOME!!! I guess after awhile it could get annoying maybe, but I would take that chance.

Phoenix is no where close to being perfect but the hot summers are a small price to pay for great winters. But I grew up in Oregon and got tired of the rain, I don't know how to drive in the snow and I hate to be cold. Phoenix is the best bet for me, until I can afford to live in CA.

does anybody have a major in neuroscience/neurobiology? is it worth it (jobwise, or useful in graduate school) or should i cut out now and choose something else? or just give suggestions on an interesting, somewhat-related major.

It depends, are you planning to apply for med school or a phd program?

Neurosurgery is the tiniest, tiniest part of neurobio.

Nico, I didn't major in neurobio but I'm in a sensory neurobio lab right now as a tech (and have been in this field for three years now). I would say it's worth it if that's what you're into, but it's all contingent on what, exactly, you want to do after college.

Haven't decided yet. I would love to work in neurology or neurosurgery, but if I went the phd route I would probably do cognitive psychology and work within the legal system. I'm hoping that I figure it out after I spend some time studying it.

Neuro's a good major for med school, although you might have to take a few additional general bio classes. Neuro's also a good major for a PhD route because you can get a general overview and then winnow down into a particular branch in grad school. I'm not a huge fan of psychology so I can't speak to the usefulness there, but if you got a neuro major I'd definitely look more into psychiatry instead of psychology. Prescriptions = money.

NicoDread
07-09-2010, 05:31 PM
Psychiatry is a good idea. If I don't go to med school I've also thought about studying biochem and going into research or professor positions. But yeah, part of the reason I'm interested in neuroscience is because of how broad it is, seems like I can choose from a few disciplines and have some good opportunities.

Neuro is a crazy big field with loads and loads of branches. I'm not sure how much leeway you have between topics once you lock into a grad school program, so I would definitely do some preliminary research and see what kinds of different things are possible. Even within a small topic there are endless subdivisions, it seems.

I think this kind of statement is misleading. I know people who majored in psychology who now have really terrific jobs. One is an exec at NBC, another is a successfully published novelist. But I would tend to say that in careers like that were there are no formal educational entrance requirements, your specific major matters less than where you went to school, how you did, what connections you have, how talented you are, and how ambitious you are in the way you approach your career.

On the way I hear this song on the radio and damn I don't know who it is so I open up Shazam, tag the song. When I get home I use the hook up to my TV and open up Shazam again to search youtube for vids. When it finds the usual zillions of the song it plays it in 720p on my big screen. All this from my phone. Yikes.....

so, someone from a local promoter here in SF is monitoring some of the SF threads (particularly the ones following two of their biggest events). we've known about this for some time. however, a contact of mine that works at one of their venues has caught heat for a previous mention of his name in a thread. he told me to be cool and i/we have. however, i referenced another board member by their first initial, as she has the same as this contact, and he just sent me an em saying that he's caught more shit and could lose his job for this most recent mention (even though it wasn't even a reference to him).

i want to tell these people to FUCK OFF in this thread but don't want to get my contact in more trouble. but, this has gotten out of hand. instead of messing with an employee, they should be thanking us for pumping their shows and shelling out so much money to support their business.

sorry for the rant (and for being oblique), but i am really pissed and it's taking all my energy to not go off on them in this thread (knowing that they are reading it). and, if you people are monitoring this thread as well...seriously, fuck the hell off!

Super easy: All you need to do is have a single file you're going to upload, be it an MP3, a document or a zipped file. To post a folder (what you'd want to do if you're upping an album) you just have to find where the folder is on your computer and either right click (on a PC) or Apple+Click (on mac) and either send to archive or .zip or whatever else your computer calls it. Then find where that zip went, go to your uploading site, click their upload button and then click on the file you want to upload.

You can't create work for yourself? In my office there's seemingly always something that needs to get done -- even if it's just tidying up files or whatever.

Now that I have an intern trained up and pretty much doing all my work for me, I'm taking the time to do long-term planning and create a proposal for a new marketing strategy using some research I've been doing. He kept a skeleton crew, 2 estimators, himself and his wife and the admin person (me). So in the past 2 years all of the files have been cleaned out, labels made, etc. Since I have been here I recreated their spreadsheets that were done by a lady who was 108 and didn't know how to work a computer, I made a database for all of their bids they have done throughout the year so that they can do a search on the computer instead of flipping through their proposal binders (something I can't believe they did for as long as they did), created a backup of all their bid documents, taught their estimator how to work his computer, etc. I am running out of fake work at this point. So I sit here and wait for them to give me something to do, or wait for the phone to ring. Someone is faxing the phone right now though so it is ringing every 3 minutes... YAY!

Thanks for the words. I'm now officially a coach. Signed the forms tonight and registered for the clinics and training. Ladybugs here I come!

He's very comfy here. I can leave my front door open. He just curiously steps out and looks around, but comes right back in.
And I let him hang outside on my balcony as well. He's not jumping/climbing off at all.

Still not sure if I will turn him over to this no-kill shelter here or keep him.
If I do, he could prolly use a companion as well.

I'm gonna venture to say that I really don't think you have a choice anymore. I mean, just look at that angelic face full of whiskers, sleeping blissfully away, not a worry in the world where his next meal or head scratch will come from...I'd say it's time to get a real litte box and toss out the cardboard box you had built when he was temporarily in need of a shelter. Yep. He owns you now.

I've also got interested in my aunts neighbors dog, which is a whole other story.

And about the cat-for three weekends in a row, I had to leave my apartment for 2 to 3 days at a time.
Each time, I had to put him back out on the street.
The first time, he didn't really like that at all. He kept hanging around the door as I was packing my car. When I came back, he was hanging at the other building I found him at (I suspect he gets food there as well, but not owned by anyone).

The 2nd time, when I came back home, i hadn't planned on getting him actually, but then I heard meowing outside my door, so he knew I was back home.

The third time, last weekend, he didn't seem to mind. He went off exploring again. Though, I did have to physically place him outside because he was napping (the picture I posted above was actually like 15 minutes before I left last weekend :D )

That whole story reminds me of the very funny ER scene in The Rules of Attraction.

- Harry. - Harry, Harry.
I'm not getting any pulse.
Is this a joke?
I can see him moving. He's not dead.
- I can see him breathing. - He's dead, Paul, shut up!
And how did this happen, exactly?
- Oh God, I don't know! - Oh God, oh God!
Will you shut up? He's not dead.
He hasn't got a pulse. There's no heartbeat.
His pupils are fixed and dilated.
Harry, please come back.
Sorry, there's nothing more I can do here.
You have to do something.
I've seen this on ER. Please fix him!
Harry's gone bye-bye. Harry's gone to the big bye-bye.
He's got his name in the papers on the back side.
It's "'toe-tag time' in Teenville" tonight. Again.
- What? - Teenville?
You should've just said no, Harry.
- I'm not dead, am I? - Ahh!
Yes, you are! Shut up!
Actually, you don't have a pulse. I think you're dead.
If you let me run a few tests, I could probably prove it.
- You've got a malpractice suit! - Harry is dead.
You don't know what you're talking about!

Went to the A's game yesterday. My first baseball game, it was a freaking blast! We had a box with a bunch of friends, good times. Then we went back to our friends house for a BBQ, only to find out one of the dogs that was left there for the game, was dead. Man, talk about a downer. mountmccabe
07-25-2010, 12:49 PM
You can't keep cats off of surfaces onto which they can get.

You can do the spray bottle thing and eventually probably they won't wander around the counter or whatever when you're around... but when you're gone they will still go on the counter. This is the case for 99% of cats. They just aren't that trainable; they just don't care what humans think of them that much.

So the real solution is to yeah, train them to stay off the counter when you're there (so they don't jump up there when you're making cookies or when guests are over) but also don't leave anything out there you don't mind them getting into and wash your counters (etc) before doing anything.

I guess it's safe to assume that none of your cats go outdoors, Becca? I couldn't imagine taking away a cat's only real means of defense if it were an indoor/outdoor cat like ours is. (Not that I don't want to remove them myself on those occasions that she seems to think that my cushy wicker chair makes for a great scratching post.) I've also considered filing her teeth down like human teeth during those playful encounters she likes to have with my calves if I ignore her for too long.

If you're worried about getting things wet, you could always clap your hands and tell her, "No!" with that hissing sound Gemma suggested earlier.

Nope, our cats only go outdoors when I take them to the vet, and that's in a kitty carrier. We wouldn't have declawed them otherwise. :) I did take one out to play in the snow earlier this year, but he ran back inside. :p They have no interest in the outdoors, thankfully.

I have gotten super paranoid when high, to the point of thinking I might need to go to the ER but I am usually too trapped in my head to ask anyone to take me. Thank goodness. I have found that my paranoia is much worse recently. After talking to Nick the other night about it we both decided it was due to our recent mushroom adventure. Ever since I got stuck in my own head on mushrooms whenever I smoke weed I go back to that ferris wheel in my head where I convinced myself I was crazy. I have finally figured out though that eventually the ride will stop and I can get off. But it has made smoking weed less enjoyable.

algunz
07-26-2010, 06:52 AM
It happens. My good friend, a regular smoker and a frequent dropper, started having major anxiety issues. To the point where even not on illicit drugs his paranoia would kick in during stressful situations. He thought he was having flashbacks but his doctor decided that his chemical make-up had been altered by the drug use and he now needs to be on meds to keep him balanced. He won't smoke anymore, and rarely does hallucinogens. He is beginning to feel more in control. But it's been an ongoing battle for the past 10 years. He was probably predisposed to anxiety and depression but had gotten away with self-medicating for years. Unfortunately the "street drugs" stopped keeping him happy.

The stray I took in is unusually well behaved.
He doesn't climb up on counters/shelves.
He doesn't claw/gnaw on things except the cat scratcher thing (the occasional clawing on the carpeting and rarely on the back or side of my sofa as well).
I can place him outside without any worry he's going to run off or climb up/down.

Is it weird that I want him to be a bit more active?

He's not even into the toys I got him. He likes the stuffed catnip toy, of course. But he doesn't care for feather or balls that jingle.
He'll bat one around 2 or 3 times, but then stops and gets bored I guess.
The laser pointer only works sometimes to get him moving, but usually he'll just look at it.

He doesn't seem unhealthy or anything. Just uninterested.
Maybe I haven't got the right toy. But like i said, the cat scratcher and catnip gets him going.

Man hit by six meteorites is being 'targeted by aliens' (http://www.metro.co.uk/weird/835482-man-hit-by-six-meteorites-is-being-targeted-by-aliens)

'I am obviously being targeted by extraterrestrials. I don't know what I have done to annoy them but there is no other explanation that makes sense. The chance of being hit by a meteorite is so small that getting hit six times has to be deliberate.'

50-year-old Lajic has had a steel girder reinforced roof put on the house to protect it from the alien bombardment - which he funded by selling one of the meteorites to a university in the Netherlands.

'I have no doubt I am being targeted by aliens,' he adds. 'They are playing games with me. I don't know why they are doing this. When it rains I can't sleep for worrying about another strike.'
