It only makes sense the new Teabaggers big anthem is a song by ray stevens whos' big hits included gitarzan, the streak, ahab the arab, and harry the hairy ape. cr**** oh and least we forget
Jeremiah Peabody's Polyunsaturated Quick-Dissolving, Fast-Acting Pleasant-Tasting Green and Purple Pills

Ray Stevens didn't hold back his disgust for the overhaul of the health care system. I am not sure if he is for health care for everyone, or if he is more disgusted with the forced insurance premiums.

In his song, “We the People” Ray Stevens protests the legislation of “Obama Care.” He sings you vote Obama care we are going to vote you out of there. He said that we are “being royally defecated upon.” Stevens then continued to joke about the politicians going into the medical business after they are out of work because of all the red tape that will go on.

This song has become a sort of anthem that a protest group called The Tea Party Patriots. They are typically conservatives that have been protesting across the country.

I like the Coachella lineup this year. I realized, though, that I like it about the same amount every year, never really more or less. I also realized that how much I like the lineup is based more and more off of what my friends and other people around me think of it than what my personal taste agrees with.

Where the hell else was I supposed to post my thoughts? I don't know. Here I am, Default Thread.

David Pogue, a pretty nice and relaxed guy, rants at Barnes & Noble:

Bogus Tech Measurements
By DAVID POGUE

Most people get cranky about politics, or the economy, or what passes for music these days.

But you know what gets me cranky?

Bogus measurements.

Day in and day out, the electronics industry manipulates us. They publish "speeds and feeds" in big bold type—measurements that turn out to mean almost nothing. It's all just misdirection.

For example, I've written many times about the absurdity of megapixel counts for cameras. (An unpublished, underpublicized spec like sensor size is a far better predictor of photo quality.)

Until Intel hit a wall of physics that capped its processor speeds at about 3 gigahertz, I wrote often about the industry's misleading use of a PC's processor speed as a sort of letter grade for rating new PC's.

And I've ranted about the way the laptop industry measures battery life: they use a silly benchmark, in which all the wireless features are turned off, and the screen is dimmed as low as 20 percent.

And don't get me started about the ridiculous TV-specification benchmarks. Do you really think the average person could see the difference between 720p or 1080i? Or between a contrast ratio of 500,000:1 versus a million to 1?

But in every case, like every other reviewer on the planet, I've always taken one thing for granted: that even when manufacturers are overstating the importance of one spec or another, at least they were giving us accurate measurements.

I mean, how can a normal person measure the megahertz of a processor, or the contrast ratio of a TV set, or the lifespan of a lithium-ion battery? At some point, you have to assume that the companies are providing us with accurate specs.

But you can't assume that. Not anymore.

A couple of months ago, I reviewed Barnes & Noble's Nook e-book reader. I confess, I didn't love it much. It's slow and buggy, the battery lasts one-third as long as the Kindle's, and the bookstore prices are generally higher than Amazon's.

But this week, I discovered something that's sort of shocking, when you think about it: Barnes & Noble has been claiming that the Nook weighs less than it really does.

OK, not by much. The company says the thing weighs 11.2 ounces. In fact, it weighs 12.1 ounces. (I discovered this when my daughter set it on a home postal scale. Later, I confirmed it with a fancier scale at the actual post office.)

That's right: Barnes & Noble conveniently shaved 7.4 percent off of the Nook's weight, and hoped nobody would notice.

Well, OK. What's 7.4 percent? I mean, we're talking about an understatement of one ounce here. Who cares?

First of all, you might care if you have to hold this hard plastic slab in your hands for hours, as you must when you actually read books on it. (USA Today's Ed Baig almost uncovered the secret when he wrote in his review: "Nook weighs 11.2 ounces compared with 10.2 ounces for the Kindle. I felt the extra ounce." No, Ed—you actually felt the extra TWO ounces.)

But more important, the deceit matters. The principle matters.

Barnes & Noble might have gotten away with fudging a statistic that nobody can easily measure at home, like battery life or contrast ratio or processor speed. But no, they had to fudge the weight, which anyone can check with a simple postal scale. What were they thinking?

Barnes & Noble claims that it's all an innocent mistake. "Given the higher than anticipated demand for Nooks last year, Barnes & Noble made some minor variances in the manufacturing process to get units to customers more quickly," says spokeswoman Mary Ellen Keating. "Those minor changes resulted in a marginal weight difference from the pre-production specs, making Nook 12.1 ounces. We are in the process of updating all references to the weight."

So that's it?

No "oops," no "we apologize for the error?" Nope; nothing but a cheesy attempt to spin this gaffe into a marketing message. The company blames the error on "the higher than anticipated demand." Oh, OK. Well, in THAT case…

And by the way—isn't it funny that Barnes & Noble knew about the error, but never bothered to correct it until today, when I caught them and let them know I'd be publicizing it?

The problem is, this deception has totally changed the game for people who write about consumer tech. There's no doubt at all that we, the overworked members of the tech-reviewers' union, have always accepted manufacturers' benchmarks as accurate. In the Nook's case, for example, every single major reviewer—Wall Street Journal, USA Today, PC World, CNET, Engadget—wound up parroting the company's weight claim. Including me.

It's just never occurred to anyone that these companies might lie about this stuff.

So what does this mean? Are we now supposed to quintuple our workload by re-testing every gadget we're sent?

I mean, for all I know, some phone I reviewed might be 4.5 inches tall instead of 4.4. Maybe the laptop battery that's supposedly good for 500 charges over its lifetime would actually conk out after 350. Maybe the guts of a plasma TV aren't nearly as recyclable as the company claims. How the heck would anyone know? Some of these things require a lab to test; others require a time machine.

I'm *really* cranky at Barnes & Noble for pulling this scam, because now it will be much harder to believe any of these companies' published specs.

My job, and yours, just got a lot more complicated.

So I just watched the last episode of Conan doing The Tonight Show on Hulu. I found it really touching. I've been a fan of Conan's for a long time. When I was growing up my sister had a subscription to The Harvard Lampoon ever since I was old enough to read, and Conan was a writer for the nation's oldest humor magazine way back then. Then in the late eighties, either my brother or sister recognized his name on the credits of SNL when it was really hitting what we all felt to be its best years. We traced it back to Harvard Lampoon and made the connection, feeling like we somehow knew the guy just because we read his bits in a fucking magazine.

His career is really legendary in the world of comedy as far as I'm concerned. When he left SNL to go to The Simpsons, SNL stopped being the funniest thing around and The Simpsons took its place. The episodes he did on that show remain the absolute bar-none funniest things ever created by mankind. He is described by the longtime executive producers and creators of The Simpsons as having been the funniest person to ever set foot in their writers' room without question. Either out of reverence or just unbridled arrogance, I always felt a strange kinship with him while watching him on Late Night.

So it gets to the end of the show and he stops to make a personal address to the crowd. Most of you have probably seen it reprinted here (Roberto already did it), but for the sake of this post I will repeat:

"To all the people watching, I can never thank you enough for your kindness to me and I'll think about it for the rest of my life. All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere.

Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

And something about it got to me. I started seriously thinking that perhaps my caustic way of livening up things is the wrong way to handle it. Maybe Conan had a real point about engaging the world with optimism and kindness, and it would be repaid. Perhaps I should consider adopting this philosophy.

But then it hit me. Know what being a kind optimist gets you? Replaced by talentless cocksuckers like Jay Leno.

Fuck that, Coco.

You're correct that those Conan shows came around the time of when the show started to be amazing but it built from there.

I pass 14 dispensaries on my way home. That's 10 miles in one direction. If I was to plot my direction now and do a 10 mile radius there would be close to 100-150 dispensaries from me at this moment.

i did mein on sunday and my state comes in tomorrow & federal this weekend. i have way too much taken out cause i'm always paranoid it won't be enough, so my refund is pretty sweet. i will be using mein to get a new laptop & a new tv. my bedroom tv broke recently & the used laptop randy got me when mein got stolen is on it's last leg. if there's anything left over, i'm getting a wii & rockband.

normally i spend it on a big snowboarding trip, but there's so much crap i need i can't really justify that this year. i'm hoping to just be able to afford a plane ticket so i can stay with a friend in portland and drive up to mount hood.

i am very lucky this year. i know i'm getting a promotion this spring though and i think i'm starting to get to the income threshold where you have to file differently or whatever so i'm going to spend like crazy this year for sure lol.

Yea when I retire I could get my money in a lump sum but they would take out about 35% in taxes I think they said. If I take it month to month, it is like 3.5k till I drop over dead. They are hoping it will be about a year, I am hoping about 30 ….. cr****

I had a phone interview today with this guy and one of the questions was "what are your hobbies outside of work". I mentioned playing poker, traveling if finances permit, etc. He asked where I like to travel to. Of course being brutally honest when asked a direct question I mentioned that I go to a music festival every year in April. He asked which one and I said of course Coachella. He got all excited, apparently he has wanted to go for years but has never made it. 5 minutes of the 30 minute phone interview was discussing Coachella. Then he said... So I assume that is your way of requesting those days off? I need to stop being so honest. Although he did take it all in good nature but that might be a red flag for a new employer.

I don't know, in some ways it puts you in a great position. If coachella means more to you then the job you come flat out and say "yes I have to have those days off" or if the job means more to you, you can say "yes I love coachella and would like those days off but if it is a conflict, the job means more to me." I actually look at it the other way, all the time I waste at work when I could be at the coachella website. Yeah, my priorities are a little fucked.

But right now I am manually coallating a 124 page document that I need three copies of because this company doesn't own a real printer. This board is the only thing keeping me sane.

I was sort of shocked by this. I received my daily Live Nation update and there is an article about country music. In the article there is a list for the "biggest country music festivals" there are this summer. Stagecoach was NOT on the list. Hell even Greeley was on the list and that is a small town north of denver that has a rodeo each year with a country fest at the same time. cr*****

To comment on the Facebook Doppelganger week thing.
I didn't post a photo because i seriously do not look like any celebrity.
I was told once, when I was about 13, that I looked like Phoebe Snow.
Not sure why as I did not and still do not have a fro. I was a bit portly though.

I don't have a doppleganger either, pixie. Though I asked and my sister's friend said something about a thinner America Ferrara. I think she was just being nice with the thinner part. .... Oh and then my sister said Punky Brewster. Keee-rist.

(This was my sad attempt to add something to this thread. sorry.)

Edit -- Googled them both. I don't look like either -- though Punky is a funny halloween costume idea.

Don't be ridiculous. Malaysian water isn't fluorinated. They can't gnaw sturdy American flesh without their bicuspids crumbling like anemic cubicle-sitters at a lumberjack convention.

Hannahrain
02-04-2010, 10:45 PM
Perhaps I mean fluoridated. I didn't bother to check because I'm relatively sure whichever is the correct term is only ever going to be said to me by conspiracy theorists and RFID tearcryers.

Since the lineup announcement, I've actually felt smarter thanks to a lot of the lurkers that bombarded the board. (I hope that wasn't my imagination playing those silly games and tricks with me again, dammit.)

Yup, we're talking that extra special breed of "well informed fan" who loves nothing better than to publish music blog after music blog extolling every reason unfathomable for why they're so much MORE "in the loop" than you are.. HELL YES!! You know the type: mouth breathing stick insects, melanin and vitamin deficient, hosting mp3 streams, writing endless sanctimonious gibberish over just how ridiculously awesome Animal Collective is, or why Grizzly Bear's "Yellow House" is SO MUCH superior to their utterly unpronouncable "Veckatimest" (I mean c'mon!? with an album title like that it's OBVIOUS they're trying too hard!). They're the ones that made Justice and all that chintzy French techno huge in 2006, overhyped the Klaxons beyond the point of retarded in 2007 and unleashed bands like Vampire Weekend upon you in 2008.
