I think it is interesting that the callers haven’t picked up the latest talking points about the Obama speech. Now the latest is “It really doesn’t matter if Obama doesn’t say a thing about “change” or politicize his speech, these kids are going to loose an hour of valuable school time. They should not be watching anything on TV.” Hummmm, doesn’t anyone remember the attract on the WTC’s, the space shuttles, and along the lines of politics, the Kennedy Nixon debates? Well you guys might not remember the last one. There were a number of broadcasts that were only shown at night and I got homework assigned to watch the show, then write a paper about it. How We Know Where Our Lost Keys Are
In feature-based attention, neurons form the search patterns we use to find familiar objects in unexplored places
By Nikhil Swaminathan

When on a hunt for Waldo, that dastardly master of cryptic coloration, you probably try to zero in on the color red, hoping to catch the top of his candy cane–colored hat, or perhaps his distinctive black-rimmed glasses. Similar principles are helpful when trying to find apples in a supermarket or lost keys in our house.
Two new studies appearing in this week's issue of Neuron elucidate the neural mechanisms behind feature-based attention—essentially, the tuning of your visual processing system to specific colors, shapes or motions as a way of formulating an awareness of a scene. The findings could one day be used to better diagnose and treat disorders such as attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia. "
The idea is that this is the mechanism that allows you to find things when you know what they are but you don't know where they are," says John Serences, a cognitive scientist at the University of California, Irvine, and co-author of one of the new reports.
"While [the subjects are] attending to a particular direction of motion, the part of the brain that processes that direction of motion becomes more sensitized to detect that … motion," Serences says. "The really new thing is the fact that this sensitization spreads across the entire visual field." This indicates that while you are consciously tuning for a particular shape or color—say, your lost keys—in one part of your visual field, you may be subconsciously alerting the entire visual system to that trait, enabling a more efficient search.
Okay, so when you've lost your mind, then what???

...

President Obama is heading back to school next Tuesday, and Arizona Schools Superintendent Tom Horne doesn't like it. You'd think he'd be thrilled; maybe now someone will pass the AIMS test.

Horne gave President Obama a lesson in educating children in a statement he issued Tuesday, and when the fearless leader of one of the worst education systems in the country talks, the White House better listen.

"An important part of educating students is to teach them to read and listen critically," Horne says. "The White House materials call for a worshipful, rather than critical approach to this speech."

Oh, how adorable -- Horney thinks Arizona students can read!

The statement is in reaction to the President's plan to address students across the country in a live television address next Tuesday.

The plan to speak to students has drawn criticism from parents, educators, and just about everyone else who finds the idea of the President addressing the nation's youth in a live mass setting a bit more "Soviet" than we're used to.

"There is nothing in these White House materials about approaching the speech critically, or engaging in any critical thinking whatsoever, but only adopting a reverent approach to everything they are being told," Horne added.

Oh, come on, Tom, you're not supposed to criticize propaganda!

"I think there is a place for the president ... to talk to schoolchildren and encourage" them, she said. Parents should follow his example and "encourage their own children to stay in school and to study hard and to try to achieve the dream that they have."

Bush indicated that she didn't think it was fair for Obama to be labeled a "socialist" by critics and expressed her disappointment with the intensely polarized nature of contemporary American politics

Dude's got an agenda and has the persuasive skills of a jackhammer. All he's trying to do is rally the troops already on his side. Anyone in the middle would read that and see it for the bit of propaganda it is.

this is one factual error of many:

Because the plan wouldn't have any profit motive — and wouldn't have to waste money on executive bonuses and corporate marketing — it would automatically cost less than private insurance.

the writer clearly has no idea what constitutes the significant costs in health insurance and what does not.

TomAz

Although I think that statement you pulled from his pretty retarded as well. I don't understand how being a for-profit company has anything to do with executive bonuses or marketing. Executive bonsuses are used to attract and retain quality executives and marketing helps the brand and increase business. Non-profit companies can have those things too.

that plus executive compensation comprises about 0.1% of the total healthcare premium dollar. setting it to 0 doesn't make much difference and as you note it gives you a plan run by people not smart enough to work for the real money.

but where the real money is is in managing healthcare costs. People who harp on admin related expenses are clearly not experts.

Forty officers - mostly masked, carrying assault rifles and in full body armor - held the crowd of 500 concert goers at gunpoint for five hours while they searched fans and band members for illegal drugs. The raid netted five ounces of marijuana, some psychedelic mushrooms, a few hits of acid and lots of pipes. Twenty-eight people were arrested.

According to Norwegian site VG Nett, bus driver Andreas Jankov has formally changed his name to Julius Andreas Gimli Arn MacGyver Chewbacka Highlander Elessar-Jankov. "I wanted to show that it is possible to be serious and at the same time take the name you like," said the film enthusiast. "I wanted to see how far I could take it with respect to the number of names. I started thinking about this three years ago and it was approved in January this year." Apparently, he's had his passport and bank card reissued, but the name was too long so he dropped "Highlander."

Joe Wilson,Kanye and Serena all show passion for their respective fields and when you care so much about your craft, you can go overboard.
Any thoughts on this statement? I was reading comments online and I would say 95% of the people think Leno should cancel Kanye tonight. Some people think Leno should bring on Taylor instead. Some people even think this whole thing was a set up for the opening night show for Leno. I really don't think that is the case at all. cr****

I heard this today on Rush's show but I am not 100 % for sure if he said black or dark. OK, so the left says the right has certain code words for African Americans .. I think they are right and today on the radio broadcast Rush said "there is a black underbelly on the left that is trying to destroy America" So if I heard wrong it really doesn't matter. I went to Rush's site looking for today's broadcast and couldn't find it. A quick search of about 2 minutes I found where he said "dark underbelly". Screw you Rush. just sayin .... cr****

Derren Brown is an illusionist and trickster rather than a proper, full-on hypnotist, but he's incredibly creative and entertaining in the stunts he pulls. Like David Blaine, but with more self-awareness of how absurd it all is.

He never claims to have superpowers or anything - he introduces himself as a fraud, and invites you to try and figure out how he's fooled you. But I'll be damned if I ever can.

His previous stunts have included Russian Roulette, a seance, and predicting the lottery numbers, and I love him. His book is one of the best I've ever read and made me laugh until I ached. He's like a real-world Doctor Who, only entertaining.

Guy reported missing after Electric Picnic has turned up. We'd been a bit worried. All's well that ends well though.

Extended picnic ends for missing man

http://editorial.jpress.co.uk/web/Upload/LEIN//TH1_169200938Niall%20Cummins.JPG

A MAN who had been missing from the Electric Picnic concert in Stradbally for five days turned up alive and well at Grange, Ratheniska, where he was treated to tea and sandwiches by the locals who had just begun harvesting.

Niall Cummins from Tramore was last seen at car park D in the Stradbally venue at about noon on Monday, September 7. A description released by gardai described him as "looking similar in appearance to former Stone Roses singer Ian Brown" - and the song 'I am the Resurrection' by that Manchester band aptly sums up his miraculous appearance last Saturday evening.

Brian Ramsbottom was among the group who had just begun harvesting work on his father's farm when the missing man appeared at the gate. "He was very shaken up. He was a little bit disorientated and was wondering what part of the country he was in," Brian said.

Bizarrely, despite a description being released and national publicity in the missing person's case, Cummins turned up only about two miles from the concert venue. It is unknown what he had to eat and drink over the five days but he was hungry when he came upon the hospitable Laois group. "He dug into the tea and sandwiches," Brian said.

Gardai were quickly contacted and arrived ten or fifteen minutes later to collect the missing man. A sister-in-law of Brian's went to meet gardai in Stradbally to direct them to the site. When she confirmed that the man who turned up matched a photograph the gardai had with them, Niall Cummin's father, who was a passenger in the car, blessed himself, such was his relief that his son was alive and well.

Brian said he had been aware that the man had been missing in the locality and while back in work in Dublin during the week had looked it up on the internet. "My search led me to one Waterford discussion forum which actually said that he had been found dead," he said.

However, the story had a happy ending and he immediately recognised the missing man when he walked in the gate. "The minute I saw him I did think he looked like Ian Browne and knew it was the missing man," Brian said.

this happened to me a few times in Jr High. i brought my friend home with me cause he lived too far to walk- and my grandma who was living with us called him "dumb as an ostrich"

Ha. My first day of college was held in a hotel conference room because our campus was flooded (when all those mudslides were happening around Ventura/Santa Barbara at the beginning of '05).

And now it looks like I'm going to have to walk home because the loop road around campus is impassable. Wading across the street is preferable to sleeping in my office.

I wonder what a dumb ostrich would do in a case like this.

So what's the deal with pizza delivery charges? I just ordered a pizza from Pizza Hut and there is a $2 delivery charge. Does this go to the driver i.e. is it part of a tip, or is it just a special fuck you charge? Do pizza delivery drivers get less than minimum wage in the same way that waiters and waitresses do?

I bet if it's an official charge then Pizza Hut pockets it.

I get really confused with this when it comes to hotel room service. If there is a 20% "service charge", does that mean that I do not need to tip? What if there is a 20% "delivery charge"? What if it's just a flat rate?

When I worked as a pizza delivery boy the surcharge went straight to me, and to answer the second question- minimum wage (California).

if they are adding 20% to your room service bill, you do not need to tip. I will often look at the bill and say out loud "Oh I see the gratuity is already included" so that the server knows my thinking.

Thanks. What if it's just a $6.95 flat rate room service delivery charge, or something like that?

Fabulous. I'm an asshole.
But, if I'm an asshole for hauling ass through a yellow light and you're already 1/2 way into the intersection, that makes you the jerkoff that's 1/2 way into the middle of the street and the light's still red...

I know. Let's just flip each other off now and get any road rage out of our system, so that if we ever meet @ Coach, I don't have to worry about any fender benders, ok? :thu

no, they are in the intersection when it is green my direction, that's how blatant it is.

see, here in newport we have a ton of "important" people who just have to get where they are going. they must all be on call doctors rushing to the er to save a life. i have seen many a car hundreds of feet away from a yellow light and they still don't stop, speeding through the intersection after the light is already red. if my kids aren't in the car i like to play a little game called "am i going to let you through". i start to pull out just enough to get their attention so i can see the "oh shit" look on their face.

Now, now YB, I try and am the optimistic, get along with everyone even Tom (sometimes) poster and he is the grumpy one. Its actually funny though because I don’t think either one of us is serious. I even invited him for a beer when he was in town. He refused. Well then maybe Tom is serious but this is just another internet site to vent sometimes. Cr****
